Trying to explain this to my friend angry about 'free speech' on Reddit and Twitter is an exercise in futility though.

when people talk about free speech outside the context of gov't intervention they're talking about the ideal not the amendment you dingus

so a meaningless platitude?

i don't care what you think of it, just pointing out that unless people are specifically citing the first amendment to the US bill of rights they're probably not confused and are instead talking about a different thing when they say they think private platforms should not restrict communication

They do get banned. All the time. Why do you think the majority of harassers are anime avatar nobodies with no followers and no tweet history other than whatever gamergate/MRA nonsense they signed up to spam that week. This current batch will get banned and then they'll sign up with new fake accounts and come back. Hopefully getting rid of king shitlord will help. It's not gonna solve the issue of organised harassment overnight, but it's a start.

This is like smugly saying BUT HOW COME TWITTER ALLOWS ISIS - except they deleted 125,000 ISIS accounts earlier this year and continue to do so. Sorry it goes against your narrative.

why did you spend several hours watching somebody get tweeted at lol

University has long been pitched as a path to a career, and the debt was seen as an investment in your future. Millions of unknowing kids were pretty much forced into that path both by well-meaning adults who didn't know any better and cynical opportunists out to harvest as much cash as possible from government grants and inescapable loans. Saddling a student with tens of thousands of dollars in debt and useless degree turns out to be a great way to turn them into leftist agitators, just don't remind them that it was the leftist system of academia that put them in that situation in the first place.

STEM has been pushed extremely hard over the last two decades so I don't think you can use societal pressure as a reason for someone getting a worthless degree
