Nathilus posted:

I like both. The stallone version is hella cheesy and thus fit the theme of the comic better, and every actor in that movie is chewing on scenery at all times which makes it entertaining as hell.

Dredd is just insanely watchable. Instead of being a comic-action movie it's a straight up aaa action blockbuster. However, despite what other people say, I think it lacks the crazyness to be really dredd. The cmic is not super serious like the movie. There's a lot of silly poo poo in it that the movie simply lacks. The comic is more like tank girl than dredd as it was. I really appreciate the effort that went in to making expressions under those helmets tho, without that stallone facial tick/stroke mouth thing he does.

Its a far more subtle kind of satire. Comic Dredd almost needs to be comically over the top or people will start to root for a fascist police enforcer.

*edit, root MORE for.

I'm also stupid on a scale that can only be measured in Reddits.

It's true as far as it goes but I mean dredd's biggest villain is loving JUDGE DEATH who comes from DEATHWORLD which he killed cuz LIVING IS EVIL. I'm sorry but that would loving own as a movie.

it's a loving crime that Dredd might not have even broken even. It had a lesser budget than Deadpool, even.

I really don't have hope that a sequel (much less a GOOD sequel) will ever be made.

Dvd sales helped make dredd popular. Did terribly at the box office but clawed back in home release and apparently was very good on netflix when it hit a few years back.

While the writing wasn't amazing it had a nice setting and was getting better. It didn't help that Fox firefly'd it and aired it all out of order.

It was much better than the abotion of a replacement that the Minority Report tv show was.

Yeah I thought the setting was pretty good and seemed to be on a track to getting better but it doesn't help Fox hosed with it, and honestly even without Foxing it up, a lot of the episodes were basically just CSI: SciFi garbage. Though the chemistry between Urban and Early made it generally fun to watch even a bad episode. It probably would have been really good if they were a bit better about it's initial few episodes and if it got a second season.

The only reason Dredd flopped in the theaters is because we just had the one-two combo of Total Recall and Robocop bad remakes so when Dredd hit everyone was like I'm not gonna get fooled again and we all owned ourselves.

To be fair the advertising was loving terrible. If I didn't read SA obsessively I'd have had no idea that it wasn't a sequel to the Stallone flick. I wanted to go see it with my friends (who are all huge nerds like me) and to a man, every one of them turned it down. "gently caress that man, the first one sucked, why would I go see a reboot of that?"

I liked it when Dredd started calling her Anderson as she stepped up and acted like a real Judge. As soon as she stepped out of line and he disagreed with her reasoning, he was straight back to calling her "Rookie".

You can see the exact second he decides that she's a pass.

I might be thinking of something besides Robocop but I definitely remember the turd Recall movie being first.

Actually I think I'm remembering some "controversy" of Dredd being similar to an Asian movie with a similar assault on an apartment building plot.

Yeah, "The Raid: Redemption", definitely kickass film. It had plenty of similarities with Dredd: big action film, assault on a high-rise apartment building, basically the entire film takes place just in the building, fighting from floor to floor against a big gang.

COWABUNGA DUDES!

Dredd was rad, and it didn't matter than tons of people who saw it already had the gimmick and half the plot spoiled by seeing The Raid before it (which absolutely wasn't made because they saw the Dredd script floating around and presumed it was dead in the water ahem. Raid rules too, both of them).

The comics are also awesome, Urban seems game and in a year where most of the big budget sequels were bombs, it doesn't seem a bad idea to give such a cult film another shot.

I also remember the 3D being really good in the theater for this one so maybe I'll pick that one up.

They aren't the kind of books that I find myself awake at 2:00 AM reading, but they're a lot of fun! Not sure about the final book, I think it was completed based on his notes, but I doubt it's a firm conclusion to the series.

The earlier ones are best but they're all good reads. The last one can be skipped if you don't want a ham fisted wrapping up of all the plot lines as the last thing you remember but it's not the worst.
