Buckets posted:So wait... in the hot dog movie when does food become like a person? would a hamburger be a bunch of different people stacked up or one hamburger guy? At what point during the processing does sentience get bestowed? The baby carrots in the trailer were baby cut carrots, not actual baby carrots so does that mean preparing food makes them into a different person? would some lettuce be a person but would a bag of diced lettuce be a different person? Oh god oh man oh jeez Woah

Bloody Hedgehog posted:Yeah, but I'm in Canada and EVERYWHERE takes cards. We rolled out debit tech well before most countries. I've seen kids running lemonade stands that take cards (those little addon swipe things for cell phones). The last holdout business that didn't take cards probably folded a decade ago. I go to a tailor to get my clothes fitted. She's a nice old lady who doesn't charge much for quality work, but she got irrationally flustered when I took out a debit card. A lot of businesses run by old people in the US only trust cash or checking. This was in a city, in 2015, mind.

univbee posted:It's not always a "trust" thing, certain small businesses that are acclimated to fudging their numbers to make taxes easier aren't fond of electronic payments because nothing can be hidden with them. Hell, just last month I was offered to buy something tax-free if I paid in cash instead of by card. I thought about using a different word than "trust", but my brain is fried today, and I was too lazy to think of an alternative. I get what you mean, though.

Most of the shareholders of these companies do not get votes because they are administered through mutual funds. Mutual funds encompass a great deal of our economy, and investment mechanisms provide an ownership network for the few who are privileged enough to be able to influence policy for an extreme majority of the globes economic entities. Oh, word?

TheHoosier posted:That entire link is like the Final Destination cutting room floor. It's insane "2013: Denver Lee St. Clair, 58, was asphyxiated by an "atomic wedgie" administered by his stepson during a fight. After St. Clair had been knocked unconscious the elastic band from his torn underwear was pulled over his head and stretched around his neck, strangling him. Brad Lee Davis, 35, of McLoud, Oklahoma, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 30 years in jail." What hosed me up was the realization that this was a 35 year old man giving his 58 year old stepfather a wedgie for presumably sexual reasons.

Eventually the sound cut and we were treated to four minutes of Huw playing with his mouse, scribbling on some paper and occasionally looking at the camera. This reads like an incredibly banal SCP
