Bleak Gremlin
Previous thread - http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3781772

July was a loving insane month for the UFC.

Before the first punch was thrown in anger, the week before UFC 200 was a rollercoaster ride. Starting the week, the fight card was planned as follows:

quote:

Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne, heavyweight
Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar, featherweight, for the interim Featherweight Championship.
Mark Hunt vs. Brock Lesnar, heavyweight
Miesha Tate (c) vs. Amandu Nunes, bantamweight, for the Women’s Bantamweight Championship
Daniel Cormier (c) vs. Jon Jones (ic) for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship.
Everything changed on the night of the 6th, when less than 72 hours out of the event, the interim LHW Champion Jon “Probationer” Jones was flagged by USADA for a potential doping violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collected the previous month. Lots of goons complained about this taking a really long time (more than two weeks) to process, and were slapped down by other goons who actually vaguely knew what the gently caress they were talking about re: laboratory procedure and testing. This changed everything. For a brief, glorious period, Mark Hunt vs. Brock Lesnar was slated to be the main event of the largest MMA event in the history of this awesome gay sport. Then Dana realised that having a non-title match in the main event of a card with two title matches on it might not be the best thing ever, and the Women’s Bantamweight match took its rightful place at the top of the card.
Two days out from the event, during the airing of the UFC Fight Night, the rumours that had been floating around were confirmed: former UFC Middleweight Champion and widely-considered Greatest of All Time Anderson “Spider” Silva had accepted a match with Daniel Cormier. This match was to be three rounds and contested at 205 pounds, ensuring Silva would make weight, and that Cormier didn’t lose out on what was reported to be in the order of $2.8-3.2 million dollars for fighting.
Kicking off three nights of fights on the 7th, we had UFC Fight Night: dos Anjos vs. Alvarez, a pretty decent card that saw a new Lightweight champion crowned in less than a round. Rafael dos Anjos won the title off Anthony Pettis in March of 2015 via unanimous decision, only to lose it to Eddie Alvarez who punched him up fiercely at 3:49 of the first round. Notable also from that card was Pedro Munhoz getting a slick triangle choke over Russell Doane in a little over two minutes, and the Welterweight bout between Alan Jouban and Belal Muhammad.
The 8th saw The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale with a mixed bag of matches. Notable were Tatiana Suarez and The World’s Most Dangerous 12-Year-Old Doo Ho Choi finishing their matches in less than 4 and 3 minutes respectively. Also notable, for the wrong reasons, was Herb Dean allowing Andrew Sanchez to lie on top of Khalil Rountree for three rounds in one of the worst fights of the year. It did bring us this gem:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOMSVvUL_n4
The main event was the long-awaited rematch between Joanna Jędrzejczyk aka Joanna Champion aka Joanna Violence and Cláudia Gadelha in a 5-round match for the Womens Strawweight title. This match saw the challenger handily beating the champion for the first two rounds, gassing slightly in the third and then gassing completely in the fourth and fifth. Joanna opened the throttle on her in the championship rounds and did her best woodchipper impersonation, battering Cláudia and taking the fourth round 10-8 on all of the judges’ cards. One unanimous decision (48-46, 48-45, 48-46) later and she stands proud atop her division with no real viable challengers remaining.

The 9th saw the dust clearing and the line-up finally set for the biggest show of them all. Opening the card in the FightPass preliminaries were three fights over in less than a round each, with Joe Lauzon beating Diego Sanchez, Gegard Mousasi beating Thiago Santos and Jim Miller beating Takanori Gomi, all by way of TKO. Super Sage Northcutt opened up the Fox Sports prelims with a narrow but unanimous decision victory over Enrique Marin, in which we continued to see Sage’s deficiencies on the ground. Arms aren’t supposed to bend that way, Sage. I don’t really remember the rest of the FS1 prelims but TJ Dillashaw beat Rapheal Assuncao, Kelvin Gastelum beat Johny Hendricks and Jullianna Pena beat Cat Zingano, all by decision. The Gastelum/Hendricks fight was contested at a catchweight of 171.25 pounds with Hendricks once again lost the fight against cheeseburgers before stepping into the Octagon.

The main card opened up with Cain Velasquez putting a serious beating on Travis Browne, including two of the sweetest Heavyweight wheelkicks you’ve ever seen. Travis Browne collapsed into a turd-shaped pile of meat near the end of the first round to universal derision.

The featherweight bout went as a lot of people expected, with not a great deal of action but some very smart fighting from the two fighters, with Jose having the edge in almost all of the exchanges and out-pointing his opponent in at least 3 rounds, with one judge having it as four. Some goons weren’t particularly happy about this, and Jose would later claim to have spies in Frankie’s camp, then pretend he was just trash talking, possibly while jacking it to softcore porn.

The lightheavyweight bout went exactly as expected as well. Daniel Cormier decided that standing up and striking with arguably the best MMA striker in the world was probably pretty dumb, and instead elected to use his world-class wrestling to wrestle Anderson to a decision. People decided this was some lay-and-pray bullshit, once again showing how short people’s memory can be with Sanchez/Rountree being less than 48 hours previous. Silva got a couple of good shots in, specifically one liver shot in the second that had DC clearly reeling, but with the Olympian dominating all of the grappling exchanges he easily took the fight 30-26 on all three judges’ cards.

The freakshow heavyweight bout was next and ended up being very similar to the previous LHW match. Brock Lesnar is a beast, a jacked white boy if you will, who was able to use his enormous speed and canniness to stay clear of Mark Hunt’s punches, bring the fight to the ground and control it at his own pace. He ground out a 29-27 win that didn’t leave the fans particularly impressed.

The main event, on the other hand, made up for the previous matches in pure explosiveness and action. Amanda “Lioness” Nunes broke Miesha “Cupcake” Tate’s nose a few minutes into the first round and clearly had the champion rocked and loopy. Nunes then proceeded to take Tate down and slap on a rear-naked choke that might not have been all the way in, but was in enough to get the demoralised champ to tap out. Women’s Bantamweight in a post-Ronda world is starting to resemble Men’s Heavyweight in that anything can happen and defending the belt more than once or twice could be an anomaly.

The Monday after UFC 200 saw the biggest business announcement in the history of the company and the sport. After months of secret negotiations and countless denials from Dana White (he lies) it was confirmed that the Fertitta brothers and Dana had agreed to sell the UFC to the WME-IMG group for $4,000,000,000. Four billion dollars is a two hundred thousand percent return on investment for the $2 million that they paid in January 2001. The deal personally netted Dana around $400 million dollars, and he will also stay on as president and public face of the company.

The week after the event saw another huge but entirely foreseeable piece of news as Brock Lesnar tested positive for performance enhancing drugs as well. This saw Mark Hunt go off on a three-weeks-long (and counting) tirade on social media about steroid-enhanced fighters that basically boils down to Mark wanting some of the reported $2.5 million Brock was paid to fight. He has been talking about wanting to start a fighters’ union, and as of this writing there has been no resolution about this, nor any official word from the UFC or Dana as to an outcome.

Three more cards rounded out the month, with UFC Fight Night : McDonald vs. Lineker on the 13th followed up by UFC on Fox: Holm vs. Shevchenko. Some solid fights throughout, with my personal highlight of the latter being French-Cameroonian heavyweight Francis Ngannou punching the lights out of the previously undefeated and possible white supremacist Bojan Mihajlović in under two minutes. The third and final card was UFC 201. UFC 201: Lawler vs. Woodley was originally intended to also feature Demetrious Johnson defending his flyweight title against Wilson Reis, with the champion having to pull out for what is still an undisclosed injury. Justin Scoggins was supposed to fight Ian McCall in a flyweight bout, but Scoggins announced at that point in time and for the foreseeable future he would not be able to make 125 pounds, and would be moving to bantamweight. Uncle Creepy was paid his show and win money for that event according to MMAJunkie.com, who are listed as a credible news source at the bottom of this post, so I guess it probably happened!

The last UFC fight for July 2016 proved once and for all that anything really can happen in MMA. Coming into the fight as a mild underdog (+120) Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley put Ruthless Robbie Lawler to sleep around halfway through the first round with a precise overhand right. This was a fitting final note on a crazy month that saw three championship changes and three major pieces of PED-related news, with Chad “Money” Mendes also being suspended for two years after testing positive for a growth hormone release stimulator and blaming skin cream he was using for his psoriasis. Dunc posted this excellent analysis of the excuse Mendes used in the previous thread.

Triticum Guzzler posted:

ah poo poo. shucks. it's just bad luck that usada tested me 5 minutes apart and the first time they used a power drill to perform the blood test and i accidentally fell joker style into a vat of my skin cream that i forgot to tell them about 9000 times and it all got into the hole in my arm. i guess i broke the rules but it wasn't my fault.

And that was the month that was. I’m pretty sure I’ve forgotten something because of how ridiculous this month has been, and I’m sure that the first reply in this thread will be someone telling me how much of a retarded retard I was for missing it.

Your champions!

Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic. Knocked out Fabricio Verdum in front of 45,000 of Verdum’s fellow Brazilians in May 2016. Will defend his title next against Alistair Overeem at UFC 203 in September in Cleveland.

Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel “DC” Cormier. Beat Anthony “Rumble” Johnson in May 2015 via RNC, and ground out a decision against Alexander Gustaffson in October 2015. No next challenger announced.

Interim Light Heavyweight Champion Jon "Bones" Jones I guess goes here because he hasn’t been stripped yet. Won a one-sided, tepid decision against Ovince St. Preux in April 2016 and then decided he needed to do steroids to beat DC again, so he did steroids and got busted. Only listed here because he hasn’t had his hearing yet. Will inevitably have this title stripped when he does. Has tarnished his own image in the eyes of everyone who wonder if he is actually as good as he seems to be or if he’s just been on the gear his entire career.

Middleweight Champion Michael “The Count” Bisping. Knocked out Luke Rockhold in less than a round at the start of June 2016, on ten days’ notice. Will defend the title against Cool MMA Granddad Dan Henderson at UFC 204 in October.

Welterweight Champion Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley. Won the title like a day ago by knocking out Robbie Lawler in under a round. loving hell there’s a lot of that going around at the moment.

Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez. Punched the poo poo out of Rafael dos Anjos in July 2016. No challenger announced.

Featherweight Champion "Notorious" Conor McGregor. This loving guy. KO’d Chad Mendes in July 2015 in a decent display of timing and precision and then went on to knock out Jose Aldo in 14 loving seconds in December 2015. Will face Jose Aldo for the undisputed title after he’s finished getting choked out by Nate Diaz sometime in the early 2020s.

Interim Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo. Took a decision against Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 in early July 2016. Will take on Conor McGregor at some point in time between now and the heat death of the universe in an attempt to unite the two featherweight belts (see above).

Bantamweight Champion Dominick "The Dominator" Cruz. Took a close decision against TJ Dillashaw in January 2016, and defended his title comfortably against Urijah Faber in June 2016. No challenger announced at this stage.

Flyweight Champion Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson. Won the title in the final of the Flyweight Tournament in September two thousand and loving twelve making him the longest reigning champion by a very very long margin. Currently has 8 successful title defences in a row. Was slated to face Wilson Reis at UFC 201 but pulled out with an injury. The pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.

Women's Bantamweight Champion Amanda “Lioness” Nunes. Punched and choked her way to victory in the main event of UFC 200 against Miesha Tate. No challenger announced as yet.

Women's Strawweight Champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk. Beat the hell out of Cláudia Gadelha the night before UFC 200 to a solid decision victory. No challenger announced yet. Second longest reigning UFC champion after winning the belt in March 2015 and currently has a 3-win defense streak.

Regarding the drug violations. Assuming that the fighters are legit using something, how involved are the coaches, trainers, etc in the usage? Like would Greg Jackson be aware of what Jones is taking, or is it his nutritionist planning it for him, or is Jones is just doing it on his own?

Let's assume I'm the average goon who eats chips all day and have no knowledge of training and supplements.

legitimately have no loving idea but if i were greg jackson i'd be torn between wanting my fighter to win (so i can get paid) and wanting my fighter to not be suspended for many years (so i can get paid) so i'm forced to imagine that if greg autismed into the locker rooom and saw jon with a needle hanging out his rear end he'd find the wall very interesting and start talking about getting some or whatever and then immediately telling a lackey to find out what jon's on and make sure it's good enough to pass.

i honestly don't believe coaches would be encouraging it.

Someone asked Firas zihabi this on his Q&A show thing, and his answer was basically 'it depends'. Some gyms its basically mandatory to use gear, other gyms its explicitly frowned upon, but the most common arrangement is probably where the coaches dont know either way but kinda turn a blind eye to it

But yeah you could definitely have a nutritionist or doctor or whatever guiding you through that stuff, like marching powder said for Jones its probably whatever NFL steroid guys his brothers use

The coaches have all the incentive in the world to turn a blind eye to it. If their fighter gets caught, they can honestly deny culpablility. If the fighter doesn't get caught, increased chance of the figher winning and the coaches/gyms getting some kind of percentage of the winnings.

Zahabi's pre-fight analysis is up for Diaz McGregor 2.

Only about 10 minutes in, but he's putting it out there that Conor's energy went from 100 to 0 real quick because he broke psychologically when Nate started trash talking him in the 2nd round. Right before he landed the big one two, and that the one two was what finished him off, but he was breaking mentally right before that.

If Jackson's involved in doping, it'd be very tangentially, due to the legal ramifications. If anything, Jackson facilitated a meeting between a cash-only "nutritionist" and fighters. "Hey, I know a guy..."

The Ringer (Bill Simmons' new sports/pop culture website) just published a piece called "How to Fix the UFC". There are some decent ideas in there (Fighters union, mostly, and cut the poo poo with the interim titles), but there's plenty of weird in there too. Like pro-wrestling podcast guy Shoemaker saying getting rid of huge weight cuts - which in itself isn't a terrible idea - with the logic "Even the greats like McGregor, Anderson Silva, and Jon Jones look better when they go up a weight class."

Ah yes, the impressive performance McGregor had at welterweight and while Andy was indeed undefeated at 205 before Cormier, I wouldn't say his last foray was all that inspiring. Also, remember the time Bones fought at heavyweight?

How would you, a goon, "fix" the UFC?

I'm at work so I can't read that whole piece, but I skimmed the article for the headers and at face value I agree with everything except the last two, even if the specific examples you shared for their reasoning about weight cuts were bad.

I don't think ditching Dana is the right move, although they should continue to limit his interactions with the press and fans on twitter (which they've been doing over the past few years anyway.) I agree he is a liability who can call fans, coaches and fighters he disagrees with fat queers or whatever and that's a huge liability now that more people and media outlets are actually paying attention to mma, but even without Lorenzo around to play good cop I have a hard time imagining anyone else being as good or effective at the many necessary things Dana does as president. And while fewer events wouldn't hurt from a strictly domestic market point of view, I don't think it would really do as much to "fix" the UFC like some might suggest.
