It's hard to get excited about something that might not happen. It's not going to get fun till it starts unless a bunch of people to turn up, discover half the site isn't accessible to anyone with mobility problems, and then go home again in disgust.

It normally gets TV coverage in the UK. Not on the same scale, but there's normally live events on a daily basis.

Somehow the players agreed to it.

At most I remember seeing swimming and track events (especially when Pistorious was still a big name in para-athletics) on TV here and there at previous summer paralympic games. I'd always wonder if a swimmer missing an arm or a leg had an advantage. Darth123123 posted:what qualifies as disabled to be able to play? fingat dude could clean house (if he's not fat). I think up until the mid 70s you had to be missing a limb or confined to a wheelchair to be eligible. It's been expanded now to fit things like range of motion issues, impaired musculature, vision impairment, and intellectual impairment (lol Spain's b-ball team). The Deaf have their own Deaflympics event. I don't think fingat goon would be able to qualify. And I know I'm super late to the party with the games being over and all, but I caught up on the thread, and saw all the bemusement/bamboozlement over racewalking. If anyone is still confused over it and why its a thing in the Olympics, feel free to ask questions. I made the NYS championship for 1500m racewalk when I was in HS. Part of the problem is that even though it's supposed to be strict on form, it's easy to game the system, since there are both 'minor' and 'major' infractions for breaking form. The problem was, three major infractions got you a DQ, but you could pretty much run up as many minor infractions as you wanted and stay in the race. I never got flagged for either, but I had a rival I hated because she would constantly pull minors by doing those little jog moves. Two important points: I never once poo poo myself, and you were always going just slow enough that you could hear every comment/joke/insult other athletes were making as you wiggled by them. So one way of being a paraplegic is to be paralyzed. You still have your legs, but they're just inert lumps of flesh. The other is to have amputations, you just don't have legs. In paralympic races, are these groups segregated? Because if you're in a distance wheelchair race, ceteris parabus a guy with no legs is going to be faster than a guy who has useless legs, because he doesn't have that extra mass weighing him down. If they're not segregated, has there ever been a case where a guy whose legs are paralyzed has elected to have them amputated in order to be able to go faster?
