Yes, things are stabilizing somewhat, although Koolkevz666's game (The one with a custom hard setting) is still down in the 40s. I think his one will probably have quite low H&M until late in the game because his troops will have to be defending instead of patrolling villages.

Monday (Yeah that's right, this war is now being fought with weekends off.) New village names on my map are based on the ANZAC area of operations in Phuoc Tuy Province. As morning dawns, the captain of Charlie Company decides that to do nothing would be supine. His men fire on the next VC section to pass on the trail, wiping them out in seconds. There is chaos and shouting everywhere as the other VC subunits nearby converge on the area. It takes about ten minutes before two VC sections make a hastily planned assault parallel from the Southwest, but 3 platoon 2 squad is still in their nighttime all around defense position and they spray the unsupported attackers with machine gun and rifle fire. The survivors reel back as Charlie Coy hastily get their packs on and start pushing southeast. As they move off the plateau they overnighted on, they bump into yet another VC section hurrying up the trail to the disturbance. A quick and nasty firefight erupts and several men on both sides are killed or wounded. +3 H&M in Long Son, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength A quick search of the bodies yields gold - a VC officer had a map marked up with the Cadre's planned route. It seems that after assassination of an administrator in Long Son, they planned to rendezvous with a local VC platoon near Long Green that they were to outfit with ammunition and military supplies. Intelligence on unit near Long Green. A recon element is sent ahead to the RV point and by late afternoon, the local Cadre has been spotted and eliminated by a salvo of rockets from a flight of F-100 Super sabres. The Headman of Long Green, returning from a trip to Saigon to sell rice, is killed in the attack. His tithes on the rice harvest, claimed to be supplies for communist freedom fighters, were really sold on the black market in Saigon to finance his gambling debts. Support for the North's cause in Long Green wanes considerably. +5 H&M in Long Green. The US estimates that the action involved over 80 VC fighters, but in reality only 30 VC were in the area that day. +5 H&M in Long Green, +1000PP. Meanwhile, Bravo company is resupplied and begins to head southeast toward the center of the AO. In the east, there is a general movement to the southwest as US infantry and engineers push further from the main base. A wave of Hueys set out to resupply the outermost units. With the lightly wounded treated and a newly arrived draft bolstering the numbers, Delta company mounts up and sets out to protect the engineers. Echo Coy has arrived at the North FOB for Further ARVN recruiting. Tuesday Foxtrot Coy is down to the very dregs of their supplies when resupply comes - one man was even reported to be considering a cold can of ham and lima beans, though thankfully the helicopters get there before the situation escalates. Delta's first port of call is Ya Breng. Getting dropped off to the North and covered by APCs to the Northeast, they enter the village. Locals are getting used to regular patrols and report the goings on in exchange for American luxury foods and military issue items. Most are of little relevance, but today one gives away the location of VC that know about the troops near Long Tan and are planning to shoot down the supply choppers that will eventually come. Delta moves through the village and meets the APCs on the other side and continues up the road. +3 H&M in Ya Breng, Intelligence on ambush near Long Tan. The Coordinates are relayed to Golf Coy. The VC aren't expecting any ground troops here and are taken out with ease, yielding 7KIA and 2 prisoners for no loss. The whole operation has gone astonishingly smoothly for this crew. 1 Squadron scout helicopters locate Charlie Company, but it's too late in the day for the resupply birds to make it. Both ARVN companies return to the FOB to await a trickle of resupply. No Supply vehicles can be spared as they are all used on operations further out. Attracted by the helicopter activity, Charlie Coy observes VC troops setting up two HMGs across the river during the evening. 1 Platoon leaves Charlie's night loc at 1AM and spends the next 4 hours crossing the river and covering the 400m to the site. Rain moves in, helping to mask the sounds of their approach. At 5.13AM, as the VC stand to, their movement gives away their positions in the half dark and 1-2 squad gets the order to fire. The ambush is destroyed but no further intelligence is gained. +3 H&M in Long Son, +1000PP, +1 Combat strength. Wednesday The new ARVN units return from their first patrols to resupply and train further. The jungle in the area is starting to be seen as less hostile. The Engineers have reached the intersection of routes 14 and 15, when they come under fire. Luckily the inexperienced local force has set up their position too far back to be effective and rain haze causes their RPGs to fly wild. The only damage is a mangled dozer blade and some shrapnel in the sides of an M-113. +1 Combat Strength Alpha Coy is now truly in the wild. They survey the network of trails between Long Tan and Long Green. Delta pushes up the highway toward the engineers. Thursday 1st Engineers begins work on a major firebase at a spot on the map known as Nui Dat. Out west, Bravo cautiously sweeps for mines before entering Bien Hoa. Charlie Company proceeds east to make contact with the village of Long Green. Delta is on clearing patrol near the new base when they once again hit a minefield! -1 H&M in Binh Ba. The surrounding area is swept for mines and finds another field on the approaches to Binh Ba. The locals are very happy to have vehicular access to the outside world restored. +3 H&M in Binh Ba. Juliett Company is mobilized in FOB 2. 2 Mechanized Troop arrives in theatre. Their first task is to get a full stock of ammo, food and equipment to the ARVN at FOB 1. Alpha tracks VC moving northwest during the night. Friday 2 Mechanized uplifts Hotel Coy for movement to a busier sector. The weakened Deta Coy should be brought back to the main base ASAP, but the logistics prevent it. It's just as important to feed the long range patrols which are a constant drain on logistic resources, and 1Mech needs to overnight at the firebase to refuel. Meanwhile 2sqdn is urgently needed to airlift artillery to defend the new firebase. Base finished, 1st Engineers goes to route clearance of route 14. Despite historical contact in the area, Foxtrot Company has nothing to show for their ambush. They investigate Binh Din. +1 H&M in Binh Ba. Alpha sets close OPs on the line of march of the VC. They appear to be bound for either Long Hai or Binh Din. Bravo reaches Bien Hoa, Delta Binh Ba. +1 H&M in Bien Hoa, Binh Ba. Charlie is still working in the boonies. They have more confidence in their tactics now, and the men find that they are more motivated to stay alert at all times. Pacification is well underway in this valley. however, VC and NVA observers know that the finger is off the pulse in the west, and it's possible that could result in an upswing of guerilla activity soon... 3,345PP. Well, first you need enough PP to patch your R/T through to the white house... Then you need approximately 47 million PP gain from winning a huge landslide election to purchase it. Then you hope that the effect it has is enough to cover your eventual impeachment proceedings The interesting thing about my game will be eventually reclaiming the west side. Xuyen Moc and Long Green have never been visited by US troops, so could eventually become NVA strongholds. By the way, General Antares hasn't posted for two weeks, so any lurkers that want a game of their own, speak up now. Games 3 & 4 are still available, and I'm dropping the requirement for experienced players on 3. GOOD--MORNING--PHAIC--TAN--VALLEY--AAA! Oh, that? That was me vigorously scraping down my mess kit! It's good policy around here--don't want the bugs to get all over your food! Of course I wasn't stabbing a canvas effigy of my superior officer with a fork, no. Covers off for Sandshrew troop. You people were the best engineers a general could ask for, and when the Army writes up the official history, there will be a cartoon pangolin front and center. Here's our overview and our new best intel. We're still technically winning, but Sandshrew's losses are a sobering reminder--we must do better! Once we've killed that NVA group, request a new Huey squadron, callsign "PIDOVE", and use it to move the artillery, new callsign "BLASTOISE" (all future artillery will use water-type Pokemon names) to the Firebase. Golf can handle infiltration near our main base, and we need big guns in the west. Once ARVN callsign "BULBASAUR" is on the field, have them move south to My Thaob before heading west into AO Littleroot proper. Since I think our helos will need at least three turns to get aerial resupply to UMBREON anyway, have them train another ARVN, callsign "CHIKORITA". Then they can move out to the north and east. Also, as PPs permit (ideally when we're at 1000 PP + the unit cost) I'd like to commission two extra units. One infantry company, no special codename, and one Green Berets, callsign "MIGHTYENA".

How do you want to tackle AO Magma? It's probably wise to keep Bravo close to the Firebase, I don't know how well guns fare if attacked directly.

I played this week before the name reassignment, so the villages still have their old names. Monday The week gets off to a bad start as 1 Mechanized is forced to navigate a minefield. -1 H&M in Hlu Klah. 1st Engineers spends the day dozing berms for a firebase. New-in-AO Delta Company sets out to find out what's happening in Duc Co and later to clear the sides of Route 1. The Green Berets of Charlie Coy nimbly skirt the known NVA forces to see if they can find flanking units to the south. During the night their hunch is proved right as more NVA approaches. Tuesday 1 Mechanized and Bravo Coy make their way back to safety. With Everyone overcrowding the few vehicles left, any further minestrikes will be ruinous. 2nd Squadron is ambushed on their way to the front lines. -3 H&M in Gong Oluck They push on though, because it's important that they get supplies to Alpha Coy. Wednesday The weather finally abates enough and at 1042 hours a Navy phantom is guided onto the lead NVA company. Other units move to plan uneventfully. +?PP in Thanh An, +1000PP. During the night, contact is briefly made with a VC unit on the outskirts of Gao Holan. Thursday The Green Berets head north to try and find the NVA armor again. There's a lot of distance to cover and as a result they use the roads and travel too rapidly to notice they are walking into a minefield! -3 H&M in Gong Oluck Friday Another airstrike helps blunt the NVA offensive. +1 H&M in Gao Holan, +1000PP. Division intelligence reports that there are still NVA pouring into the province, however. Alpha Company Reaches a position that is on the likely NVA approach to the Firebase, and sets up for an ambush. It could be a long wait. The Green Berets have reached a roadside vantage point that will allow them to warn of enemy approaching, while still keeping out of the crossfire. Some helicopters from 2 Squadron reach them with supplies. Delta Coy Has reached Duc Co. They are surprised and relieved that there were no VC defenses on the way in, but the people are sullen and hostile. +1 H&M in Duc Co Delta will marry up with 1 Mechanized for resupply north of the town. 1st Armored is nearly at the firebase. Bravo is back in action, deploying by helicopter near Hlu Klah. The Engineers are busy clearing route 1, the 'Thunder Road' Monday, Wk 3. Afraid I overplayed a bit again. 1st Armored arrives and spends the rest of the day on battle prep. Other units continue their patrols. +3 H&M in Hlu Klah. Positions, evening, Monday Wk 3. Alpha will be resupplied while still out of contact next turn. 2 Squadron should be repaired shortly when the engineers arrive. The engineers have just cleared the route to Hlu Klah, and they did to the intersection near Alpha Coy about 4 days ago. 1 Battery is still at the main, forgot to label it. VC contacts. Unlabeled pins are from last week. The whole map is swarming with enemy. I would suggest that you go ahead with the purchase of those Green Berets, as they are the most efficient way to find and kill enemy units. The danger now is NVA bases - if they set up two more, you'll have to kill a unit every turn just to tread water on political points. Don't panic, concentrate on building up a strong force and gradually expanding your sphere of influence, which at the moment extends between the two bases. Expect some PP gain from destroyed NVA units. You have 10,333PP. You can still purchase and use units for T11, even though the ones on the board have already moved. Sweet heavenly Jesus that is a whole lot of contacts. Right i will get around to drawing a more in depth plan shortly but basically I think I will give up on patrolling to the west except for Green Berets with the priority of finding that NVA base and other units. Going to have to draw a defense line somewhere and get those engineers clearing those mines.

Yeah, Definitely get some more GBs out there asap. One good thing is Duc Co - if there was a trailhead close it would have been laden with mines and ambushes by now. Since it's not, it's probably safe to insert by air every five turns of so to get the H&M up. I also think there's a VC source somewhere North of Hlu Klah, the jungle there probably needs reconnoitering before you can get to Plei Ngo. Finally, for everyone, here's the strength of all units:

Maps are getting a little full to be drawn on so going to go with written orders, hope that is okay with you Jaguars. Orders. 1. Purchase a unit of Green Berets and have them move to Hlu Khah and start heading north through the jungle looking for VC contacts. 2. Have Alpha pull back to the firebase if they need supplies. Once supplied push them back out in front of the firebase westward and have them deploy in a suitable ambush position. 3. Keep the armour near or in the firebase and only have it venture out to directly engage any contacts along the road, prioritize enemy armour if you can please. 4. 2nd Squadron needs to return to base to repair asap. 5. Engineers continue to clear mines between the main base and the firebase. 6. Charlie needs to head to the firebase and then once it is generally safe have them be picked up by air and taken back to the main base for repairs. 7. Delta heads along the river to the next village and meets with them for some H&M before pulling back to the first village along the river from the main base. 8. Have Bravo move into the woods along the jungle, searching for mines and generally looking to hit any VC contacts. 9. As before use air support to smash any NVA contacts you can for the PP. If no NVA are found for that turn then hit any VC contacts located.

If the VC attack the base then you can just buy some infantry to defend it until the engineers repair it. You haven't seen anything in the area, like most games. The VC appearing so near it in Davin's game is an aberration.

Monday Night, Week 3 Under the cover of darkness, VC approach Davin's firebase. But the ground is well prepared and the ditches and low ground that ought to provide the best approaches is well watched... Just as the lead sapper reaches the wire, he passes a pull-wire and half a dozen trip-flares light up the whole approach. 3 M-60s from Bravo Coy fire long bursts down the defiles. Escape is cut off from behind by US troops hidden outside the wire. The VC are devastated, and interrogation of the couple of survivors reveals the location of the rear echelon of their unit, near My Thaob. +3H&M in Thanh An, +1000PP, Bravo Coy +1 Combat Strength, VC ambush revealed. Tuesday, Week 3 Unfortunately, that's not the only action tonight as an NVA troop blunders into Absol Coy's HQ. Records of what happened that night are sketchy, but it seems that the 10 man HQ is wiped out, along with a couple of other patrols attempting to investigate the disturbance. Morning sees the second in command ordering the wounded unit southwest to find the fleeing NVA. Having located them, he retreats out of the most likely NVA route and positions the unit where it can observe the NVA as they advance. Another NVA unit is picked up short of the firebase and called in. This is one of my few complaints about the game. Sometimes the screen fails to pan to the action of the second and subsequent actions of the enemy turn. Attempts to hit back at the NVA fail as Air Force pilots misidentify a rice storehouse as part of a bunker system and blast the offending shed sky high. As they retreat, angry NVA accuse an unlucky villager of ratting them out and beat him with their rifle butts. -1 H&M in Tong Mo. With so much activity around, Bravo is ordered out to ensure no mines have been laid during the chaos of the night. Delta enters Plei Gi +3H&M in Plei Gi, Intelligence reveals VC Cadre. A partition-era refugee from the North has spent the night in the village after VC appeared near his farm. Unfortunately, by the time he has taken the XO to recon the area and returned to the village, it's too late to attack. With the Air Force busy down south, nothing can be done to stop the VC. All Delta can do is head at best speed to Plei Ngo to mitigate the effects of the VC mission. A new ARVN unit, soon to be designated Bulbasaur Company, checks the main supply route before heading to My Thaob. Foxtrot Coy also reaches Plei Pan Lan, +3 H&M in Plei Pan Lan. During the night, VC are detected near FOB 2. More NVA approach the firebase during the night. Wednesday The positioning of the firebase works in Starly Squadron's favor, allowing them to resupply Delta Coy completely with a day's flying. With the supplies, Delta can head straight for Plei Ngo, but the thick undergrowth makes it hard work. Bulbasaur Coy moves to intercept the VC. Hopefully they are heading for Thanh An, allowing Bulbasaur to catch them. Absol Coy manages to revenge the NVA unit that hurt them so badly, Air force Thunderchiefs unloading a 'Snake and Nape' bomb package on the old temple the NVA are holed up in during the day. +3 H&M in Tong Mo. VC attack from the southeast again tonight, with little better results. +5H&M in Thanh An, +1000PP, Bravo Coy +1 Combat Strength. Thursday As Absol Coy finally make it to the relative safety of the firebase, more VC are spotted southeast of the base. Later, found documents will prove that an entire company of the mobile provincial VC battalion attacked. Fear of surveillance at their form up point stopped them from lingering long enough to concentrate, causing the effect of a wave of attacks as VC cadres arrive at different times. With Charlie Coy expected to arrive later today, Bravo's CO decides to pursue the rear echelon of the attacking VC. With the aid of the Green Berets' local patrols, it is a simple matter to occupy a ridgeline and rain fire down of the panicking guerrillas. Fleeing survivors are traced to a supply section moving near the Cambodian border. +5 H&M at Thanh An, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength, VC Cadre detected NW of Tomg Mo. The VC near Bulbasaur Coy has moved closer during the night and the gung-ho CO of Bulbasaur immediately pushes his entire company to a scout post that catches sight of the VC. As the VC are crossing a stream, the entire bank erupts with rifle fire. Intelligence proves little other than the VC ambush near My Thaob remains in place. +3 H&M in My Thaob, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength, VC Ambush remains detected. Both Charlie Coy and Blastoise Battery arrive in the afternoon. There is an opportunity to bombard the known NVA unit, but the CO of Charlie Coy requests that he is allowed to take care of the problem to blood his new conscript replacements. New Green Beret Company Mightyena arrives at the main. Taillow Squadron takes them to Plei Ngo to help Delta investigate the recent VC infiltration. Suspected minefields on the east side of the village turn out to be patches of recently plowed land. Pushing their luck, USAF spotters search the border area for the supply section. They're in luck, as a hapless new recruit fires a stream of tracer. Ten minutes later, a salvo of rockets blows apart the copse the VC were hiding in. +3 H&M in Tong Mo, +1000PP. In the dark, the NVA pushes forward. All the locals who knew the layout of the free fire zone around the base were taken by previous attacks. Thus, they are still filing along a trail when they unexpectedly find the outer defenses in front of them. Charlie Company is ready, and hits them hard as they try desperately to form-up without tripping the base defenses. +1? H&M in Tong Mo. Friday Bulbasaur Coy reaches My Thaob. Again, all anyone is talking about is the nearby ambush. +3 H&M in My Thaob Delta Coy reaches Plei Ngo. +1 H&M. It seems that the VC came to the village and took away 5 volunteers for training. They don't seem to have caused any more mischief. Absol Coy is finally taken away for reconstitution, leaving the firebase with less situational awareness. Bravo Coy heads out to try and exploit the gains from their recent victories. Diglett Troop is making it's way north to develop the final FOB. Fresh from the states, Juliett Company enters the fray riding on the newly allocated helicopters of Pidove Squadron. It's an eventful day as they land near Phu Nohn +1 H&M and a minefield is successfully cleared west of the village. +3 H&M (I almost didn't buy the new squadron because your logistics was coping, but I decided that with all the new infantry it was worth getting after all.) Newly created Chikorita Coy sets course for Thanh An. Friday night is uneventful. Control of the map is starting to look a lot better. Villagers are starting to come out against the communists in some areas (refer villages flying american flags; they have an H&M score of greater than 60.) Lots of VC approaching your firebase from the southeast, probably a trailhead nearby! NVA seems to have concentrated near the center so far, but that could change. You have 982PP. I'm trying to condense the updates a bit, let me know if things are getting too compressed. Monday, Week 3 Route 14 is busy with US vehicle movements. The 1st Engineers take a last look at the formed road. The next week will be hard work on jungle tracks as they head southeast to clear some LZs. Alpha Coy continues to track the VC cadre closely. Golf Company finally reaches Long Tan. +1 H&M in Long Tan. Foxtrot Company moves to prepare an ambush if they come across the river toward Bin Gia. Bravo moves south to cover as Charlie comes back toward the base for resupply. Transport comes available to evacuate the hapless Delta Company which thankfully hasn't encountered any more mines. Meet Kilo Company. They like beer, getting caught in the monsoon, the feel of fetid swamps, and the taste of muddy C-rations. Tuesday The engineers head off-road. Delta Coy passes their replacements in Hotel Coy. Hotel deploys immediately on arrival at firebase Nui Dat. Bravo and Charlie Split up again to patrol their respective areas. Lima Company leaves FSB Blackhorse for it's first patrol, Juliett Company is growing accustomed the the jungle life, no contacts so far. Golf Company patrols back to rendezvous with the engineers, but the VC seem all too aware of what's going on and parallel without being detected. Shortly before midnight, they hit the engineer laager with mortars and machine gun fire. The thinly armored M-113s don't provide much protection and several casualties are taken. Wednesday Alpha Company is successful in their tracking, as the VC cadre sets up an anti aircraft site on the way to Long Hai. Unfortunately a rookie pilot unloads his bombs 400m too long and the alerted VC disperse successfully.-3 H&M in Long Hai. However, the mission is a great success, a lot of information on VC modes of operation and trail use has been gathered. Echo Company, Green Berets, is finally on the move as they are airlifted toward the firebase. On the way back Delta Coy clears a village to keep the road safe.+3 H&M in Ba Ria(Formerly Ya Breng) Charlie Coy penetrates deep into the jungle in the south, checking for activity in Long Green. The majority of infantry continues on assigned patrol routes, doing the boring business of making sure the VC don't make themselves at home near the American sphere of influence. Unfortunately Charlie Company allows dispersed mine clearing patrols to return too late and is forced to form it's night harbor in a less than ideal location. When the NVA forces find them in the night, they are able to fire down from a small bank and kill or wound 29% of the men in Charlie.-3 H&M in Long Green Thursday Golf Company pushes logistics capacity to the limit in order to stay deep in the jungle. Echo Company arrives at the FB Nui Dat and sets out on patrol. Unfortunately staying so long in a safe base camp must have blunted their jungle instincts, because three miles up the road they run into a minefield. -1 H&M in Bien Hoa. The mining prompts a change of plans as Bravo must set up a guard post to watch for infiltrators down the road and Hotel has to check their territory for mines. During the night VC forces are heard near Golf Coy, but do not attack. In a separate incident, Viet Minh representatives reach Ba Ria and spread leaflets pertaining to communist land reforms that would give ownership of the local rubber plantation over to the local peasants. Dissent Sown! -5 H&M in Ba Ria Sometimes you incidentally spot the H&M effect of VC reaching a village, but the game won't zoom to them. Friday Golf Company listening posts locate the VC by the morning and by 0815 have taken up fighting positions. A squad of volunteers moves within earshot of the VC camp and shouts and lets loose a few rounds. They retreat through the foliage, leading the VC toward the jaws of the ambush. Several VC are killed in the initial ambush and the rest of the day is spent clearing the area around their campsite. +5 H&M in Long Tan Hotel Company reaches Binh Ha, where a gunner's cousin reports a VC location. +1 H&M in Binh Ha, ambush revealed. Careful to avoid the VC sympathizers of the unit, he quietly reports to his platoon commander and an airstrike is eventually ordered on the position. +5 H&M in Binh Ha, +1000PP. Charlie Company receives supplies and some of the wounded are casevaced using jungle penetrators, but the majority of the unit has to begin the long walk out. Meanwhile, Delta Coy finally arrives at base for some R & R. The Hueys are mostly used to keep the far units out on patrol or transport between bases. This forces the ground forces in the east to keep short patrol routes that return to the bases regularly. It might be time for another air transport unit. Bravo Company sets ambush for anyone hoping to mine the route to the firebase. Alpha Company moves on to see what is going on in the mysterious southwest. Juliett Company is forced back to the FOB while Mike Coy arrives in theater. During the night more VC are spotted by Golf Coy. It seems perhaps another terminal of the Ho Chi Minh Trail might be nearby! Areas round the bases are becoming less dangerous. The jungle east of the firebase still needs clearing, and it's not clear where the miners near Binh Ha are coming from. It looks like there are trailheads on either side of Long Tan, so making that area more accessible should repay the effort. 1590PP available. ------ Kev, can you confirm whether you want your artilery to move/stay? Monday Evening, Week 3 Alpha Battery has spent the preceding days packing their equipment. Finally they lift off in the Hueys, heading for Firebase Alpha. Echo Company, Green Berets, bypasses the camp and immediately goes on patrol. Tuesday, Week 3 The new special forces make an immediate impact as an advance patrol detects VC approaching Hamburger Hill (Formerly Hlu Klah) They get on the RT to Bravo Company who waste no time organizing a devastating attack.+5 H&M in Hamburger Hill, +1000PP, +1 Combat strength 2 Squadron makes a risky supply run necessary to keep Alpha Company in the field. Down south, Delta Coy receive new orders to go west. 1 Mechanized begins the return to base. 1 Engineers conducts a routine mine clearance run when they are hit by fusillade of AK-47 fire. They've run into a VC group infiltrating the village! They are able to limp to the FSB where they use their mobile workshops to patch up the damaged vehicles. -200PP. M48 Patton tanks get their first taste of combat as infantry and green beret spotters guide a long range bombardment onto an NVA company. The NVA are completely routed. +1 H&M in Cheetos, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength Other GB scouts probe forward to find more troops. Wedensday 1st Battery arrives. 2nd Squadron arives back to the welcome ministrations of the engineers.-200PP After the high of preventing a village infiltration yesterday, Echo company hits disaster as mines cause casualties and they are forced to retreat baseward. -1 H&M in Hamburger Hill. Alpha Battery has been racing to unpack howitzers, survey firing positions, register targets and establish communications. By mid morning the battery is open for business. Green Berets of Charlie Coy can in a fire mission, but the inexperienced observers leave a large margin of safety which gives the NVA time to disperse before any damage is done. -3 H&M in Cheetos Night sees the known forces move to a more aggressive posture. Wednesday While the torrential rain continues to make everyone miserable, the COs must make some difficult decisions over who takes which target. Ultimately 1st Armor bombards the approaching VC tanks, who immediately withdraw in good order. -3 H&M in Cheetos Alpha battery is assigned to the NVA infantry further north. SPC Harry Batten: "For the first month or so we mostly just had to stay out of the sun. When we moved to Uncle Ho's Garden we heard some hairy stories from returning infantry, but things stayed quiet, just the occasional harassment mission which as far as I could tell just made the base grumpy and woke up the patients in the hospital. When we moved to Firebase Alpha all hell broke loose. Suddenly we were doing missions every day, we'd got real lazy so it was a real shock to the system. Even during arty school I never worked as hard, and once the missions were done, we'd have to clear piles of shell casings, clean and reload the guns, get out the ready ammunition and so on. It was real hard until we got used to the routine." Alpha Battery has their first successful mission, smashing 1-3 Company of 12th Regiment from the Haiphong area. +3 H&M in Cheetos, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength 2nd Squadron embarks on another risky supply mission, this one over the unknown area of jungle south of FSB alpha. Surprisingly, the entire mission is uneventful. Did they pass over the heads of VC deep inside the jungle canopy? No-one's sure but if they did, you can be sure that the route and time will make it back to the formidable VC intelligence apparatus. Night brings the usual enemy movements. Evidence is emerging of another VC bunker complex somewhere in the area, a fact which is a constant thorn in the brass hats' planning. (-500PP indicates the NVA has set up two bases) Scouts from the NVA armor has been sighted on the edge of the jungle, but command decides to allow them out into the open to even the odds. Instead, Alpha Battery hits another NVA company causing severe casualties. +1 H&M in Cheetos, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength. 1st Armor moves away from the 'front lines' to attack a VC cadre that has infiltrated to the NE. The VC are veterans of the struggle since the mid 1950s, but never have they faced off against the might of a Tank squadron. They run away to fight another day. -1 H&M drat, that should have been easy money! Delta Coy and 1st Mechanized reach the main base to replenish, while 1st Squadron approach for refueling. No contacts for Bravo and Delta. Movement near FSB Alpha is constant every night now. In addition, refugees from three villages bring back horrifying stories. The Viet Minh have coordinated an operation to three nearby villages, summararily executing administrators, school teachers and nurses who refuse to swear an oath to fight for the unity of Vietnam. -5 H&M in Cheetos, Mountain Dew and Samosa The NVA PT-76s move cautiously into the open as planned for. 1st Armor attacks with their heavier caliber weapons, but again the NVA are in no mood for a stand up fight and retreat beyond detection range. -3 H&M in Cheetos So the good news is that your base area is a lot more secure now and you've made back most of the political points that your Green Berets cost. The bad news is that the VC are still increasing their influence on the outside areas of the map and your green berets are so important to holding the line that it's hard to evacuate them. The Vietnamese have proved hard to kill this week but you have managed to get a few of them. There's definitely one occasion where I should have used an airstrike instead of a tank attack, I'll hit those tanks from the air if I can next time I see them. It seems that there must be VC trailheads northeast of the villages of Cheetos and Hamburger Hill as well as in the center west, while the triangle between Golden Arches, Duc Sauce and Buffalo Wing is possible a VC free zone. There are six trailheads, so that's not a bad start. The province is also leaning heavily VC, so be expect mines and ambushes all the way of you plan to visit more villages the first time. One decision you need to make is a question of priorities. 1st Squadron is at the main at the moment. Your artillery only has shells for one more attack, and more need to be delivered from the main. At the same time, Echo Company is at the main and could be brought up to replace Charlie Company. Either will get there in three turns. 1st Mech is also there but will take five turns to deliver. 2nd Squadron is at firebase alpha and will take five turns for a round trip. Which do you want to prioritize? (Or you could buy a new chopper squadron, 2.5k for a Huey or 4k for a Chinook!) Finally, Charlie Coy needs resupply soon. They could return to the firebase, which loses vision on all the units to your front. 2nd Squadron could fly them supplies, which would delay them picking up anything from the main, or emergency supplies could solve the problem for 500PP. You have 7,820PP. Jaguars! fucked around with this message at 09:15 on Sep 8, 2016 |

Good morning, Phaic Tan Val-- *distant gunfire* Geez, again?! How many cadres is that?! Don't tell me I'm confirming my boss' doctrine by accident! Aaaaaaarggh...well, let's get to our SitRep. Thanks to the wonderful efforts of our soldiers in the Firebase (we should really give it a name...) and our newly commissioned Bulbasaur and Chikorita Companies--cám ơn rất nhiều!--I think we have a clearer picture of where the enemy is coming from. Suspect Trailhead Galactic has been marked due to surprisingly low belief in us in Phu Nhoh as well as the VC tracked by Bulbasaur and Umbreon, and Suspect Trailhead Plasma due to the additional VC contact near Plei Ngo. S.T. Flare may or may not be a trailhead, but given how much they seem to like Tong Mo, it seems prudent to at least try to keep eyes on that riverbed. Now if only it wasn't smack in NVA territory... Right now things seem to be working out okayish. I have a few small things to say. ABSOL, now that Mightyena's in the field, once you're cleared for duty, I want you to drop off at the Eastern FOB and train up some more ARVN Infantry, callsigns TREECKO and TURTWIG. By being there you'll also help watch the backs of Foxtrot and Juliett. When PP permits, let's roll out a Cobra unit, callsign ALTARIA. The longer reach we can get, the better! Ooh, a cobra! Very powerful but you need to be careful with them because they have a sight range of 0. (Better than Hueys or Chinooks, which don't even see the hex that they occupy!)

Cobras look like they combine the power of the artillery with the mobility of a heli, and seem much easier to keep supplied. Since we've got a big map here, they could base themselves in any given FOB or firebase, head out, shoot some NVA or VC cadre, and head back to the FOB (or firebase?!) for fuel topoff. So flexible~!

Plan of action: Purchases: How much would another GB team cost at this point? Actions: Have E Coy flown up to Hamburger Hill before sending them into the jungle looking for VC have Bravo ready to intercept any VC they find in there. C Coy will have to pull back to the firebase and have the Engineers there heal them if they can do that, if not have C Coy evac to the main base for healing. If C Coy are healed at the firebase please send them back out into the field asap please. A Coy stays where it can best ambush the enemy. D Coy will visit Golden Arches while searching for mines enroute just to be safe before heading off for Pizza Hut village. 1st Armoured need to load some actual ammo and learn to fight but as you can't do anything about that please have them engage any enemy forces, if necessary have them engage the NVA armour. Have 1st Squadron resupply the artillery by taking ammo from the mainbase to them at the firebase (think they can do that?) Think that should be everything?

Your next Green Beret Team would cost 4250PP. All infantry type units have to head right back to the main to be healed. I could get 2 squadron evac C Coy right away. By the time they get back D coy will need a resupply helo, so C might have to walk out from the main and get picked up somewhere in the field. That's a real dangerous plan for D Coy. You don't know what lies between D coy and Pizza Hut and they won't have any support if they get attacked multiple times. In addition, it takes three turns for a Huey to reach Pizza Hut, which means in a couple of turns one of the Hueys has to drop everything and spend at least four turns flying over enemy territory on a resupply mission. With more than 20 enemy units on the map (Refer to the lower left of the map), getting shot down is very likely. There is a way around that, though, because you can parachute in emergency supplies for 500PP. I think I will get 1 Engineers to head down and extend the road toward the main. You have enough turns left to make it a worthwhile endeavor, it'll cut a turn or two off the time that ground units take to deploy and thus they spend more time in useful places before heading inward for resupply.

Jaguars! posted:Your next Green Beret Team would cost 4250PP. Blast. Okay would it be possible to have D Coy go back and forth between Golden Arches and Duc Sauce to build up H&M or do I need to wait between visits for the H&M score to increase? If you could use 2nd Squadron to evac C Coy that would be great/ If C Coy has to do a bit of walking then so be it. I guess buying a new BG unit is too expensive right now which is a shame as I really need to get out some deep patrols to find those bases.

I could do the D Coy thing, it takes 5 turns for the villages to relight their campfires which is about the same as it takes to walk between them, so it would work well, and will help determine if there's any VC in the area or not. I agree about the Green Berets, four would cover most of the map. Other things that would be helpful would be another helicopter that focuses mostly on artillery shells and short supply trips (Chinook would be great for this) but at the same time, more infantry are also needed to fight and patrol villages.

Okay going to take a risk here and ask for you to buy a Chinook and then have it do nothing but artillery resupply and any extra short range supply missions. Also please have D Coy do a roving patrol/meet and greet with Golden Arches and Duc Sauce. If they get low on supplies have a Huey drop some off.

Monday, Week 4 Things go quiet. Patrols patrol, helicopters fly things around. +1 H&M in Tong Mo. Tuesday Less so on Tuesday. Bulbsaur Coy is trying to reach the known VC concentration, but by the end of the day so many mine casualties make the CO decide to turn back. -1 H&M in My Thaob. It's a long way from a suitable landing zone. Pidgey squadron has a busy day, supplying Delta Company and picking up Mightyena, bound for a more lively LZ. Everyone else is still business as usual, Chikorita reaches Thanh An, while the AO is extended in the east. +3 H&M in Thanh An. Wednesday The choppers are busy as ever today, Hoothoot delivers Absol for reorganization, Pidgey redeploys Mightyena at the start of the great western plain, Pidove and Taillow deliver supplies. In the west Bravo returns to garrison duty while Charlie moves out on another short range patrol. Chikorita checks out the periphery of AO Magma. Umbreon is covering pretty much the entire north central jungle in this patrol, and so far not a peep. Foxtrot reaches Plei Wau, where the locals are reported to be in sympathy with the VC, but no overt acts of resistance are witnessed. +1 H&M in Plei Wau. Thursday Bulbasaur still pushes toward a pickup point. Delta visits Plei Gi, supporting a recently started program of civilian health and engineer visits. +1 H&M in Plei Gi. Meanwhile, not far away, Mightyena stumbles on an NVA bunker complex! The moment this is reported a massive stir is caused throughout the zone and a massive strike package hits later that day, scarring the land for miles around. Outside forces land to clear the rest of the complex and intelligence concludes that the complex is the headquarters of NVA battalion D233. Unfortunately they fail to realize that only the advance party was occupying it and the battalion will continue to function. It still disrupts NVA operations in the area as supplies cannot be stockpiled and nor can a field hospital establish. +1 Provincial H&M, +1000PP. Newly reconstituted Absol Company arrives at FOB 2 for more ARVN training. Not far away, Fox Coy is moving south from Plei Wau. In a classic encounter battle, they fire on VC scouts approaching from the front. The battle escalates, but the lightly armed VC come off far worse. +5 H&M in Plei Wau, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength. During the night VC forces probe the firebase but are successfully chased away by US firepower. In the morning a couple of signs of wounded VC are found, but no bodies. +3 H&M in Thanh An, 1000PP, +1 Combat Strength Friday Bulbasaur Coy finally reaches an evac point and is whisked away. Green Berets check the area around the base complex for mines, but none are found. Umbreon has scoured the whole jungle and found nothing. Delta is ready for resupply again. In the east, US forces have been pushing out from the villages, clearing the hinterlands. Altaria squadron is finally ready! They spend their first night in the field at FOB 2 with Absol Coy. Finally, just as Umbreon is looking to leave the jungle, VC pass them during the night. Looks like that jungle isn't a safe zone after all! Divisional intelligence claims that no VC are entering the area at the moment due to strikes on the trail further north. You know the location of the two VC units and it seems the rest of the area is clear! No known NVA movements in the area aside from the destroyed base complex. You have 240PP.

IIRC, the trigger for a basebuilding mission is a village dipping below 40 H&M. Communist propaganda and minefields both have a fairly large negative impact on a village, so it would only take a couple of infiltrators to trigger it. I must admit that hardly anyone has visited Do Chi, the fighting to the south has occupied all the troops in the area until now..

Monday Again a quiet day. Troops wait in ambush while the ARVN lock down Route 14 against minefields. Near Long Tan, Golf Company attacks a VC unit, clearing the way for the 1st engineers. +3 H&M in Long Tan, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength. Tuesday Charlie Company makes it's way out of the forest. Foxtrot visit Binh Gia. +3 H&M in Binh Gia. Over the today and the next day, 1 Engineers works feverishly, first to clear a patch of jungle, then to fortify it, while Golf Company nervously monitors the perimeter. -1200PP. Kilo Company marches into the area. Job Done, the Engineers get a day to rest and repair. -200PP Wednesday Charlie and Foxtrot Company marry up and form a massive file of troops marching to the firebase for resupply. Even as they approach, VC partisans hit helicopters of One Squadron preparing for the airlift. -1 H&M in Bien Hoa Thursday Golf sets up an ambush near Patrol Base Coral, while the engineers set off for the next job. Back in civilization, Echo finally arives back at the main, while most patrols move westward. Friday Unfortunately Kilo Company is pulled off escort duty temporarily to meet the supply chopper. Echo Coy arrives at Coral to Vietnamize this sector. Some evidence is found during the night of VC infiltration near Binh Ha, but otherwise the night is quiet.-4 H&M in Binh Ha. The Early morning supply chopper to Kilo Company is also hit near Long Tan. -1 H&M in Long Tan. There are still a lot of enemy round, including rumors of a base being set up, but the allied forces have control of a substantial portion of the map. Current PP: -255.

Monday, Week 4 Delta Company reaches Golden Arches +1 H&M in Golden Arches. A Potential VC Ambush is blasted into oblivion. +5 H&M in Cheetos, +1000PP. By lucky coincidence the engineers stop for the night just short of a minefield, and local wildlife sets of a couple during the night. While waiting for long range fuel supplies to arrive, 2 Squadron makes a short return journey to drop off the newly reconstituted Echo Company. On landing Echo secures the approaches to Hamburger Hill, finding mines the VC have laid an expected US access trail. +3 H&M in Hamburger Hill. PVT Tommy Daimoto: "We'd been lying in ambush for days, even in the rest area in back no talking or hot meals were allowed. Finally, in the small hours of the night, all of a sudden the NVA were there. My instructors had taught me to look at their shoes, not their faces, so they wouldn't sense you looking at them. So as I fought the urge to scream or run, I watched as they walked past, leather boots, rubber sandals, even a few pairs of GI boots. They'd banked up about 5 claymore mines and when they went off, I fired at the guy in front of me, and then kept on firing blindly until the cease fire command. An hour or so later, another unit came up to our side, paralleling the road, and they were wary as hell. They moved so slowly in the dark that you started thinking your mind was playing tricks on you, and they made not a sound. But when they got close enough, we blew them away too." Alpha Company ambushes an NVA platoon moving up the road, and encounters another later that night. +4-7? H&M in Cheetos, +2000PP, +2 Combat Strength. Tuesday Intelligence from Alpha's ambush gives away the location of a NVA fuel dump, which is duly attacked, shattering a NVA armor unit during a resupply phase. +1 H&M in Mountain Dew, +1000PP. 1st Armor sets up a roadblock to cover the withdrawal of the Green Berets and prevent excess attacks on Alpha Company. The day from hell begins for the engineers. The entire remaining road is combed by mine plows and two minefields are neutralized en route. +6 H&M in Hamburger Hill. 1st squadron picks up supplies of shells for the firebase. Delta Company sets out to return to Duc Fries. Once again Alpha Company is hit by NVA, but defends itself successfully. +3 H&M in Cheetos, +1000PP, +1 Combat Strength. Wednesday 1st armor has to move back to defend the firebase. Because of the rain, Alpha company can't move and set ambush in one turn, and opts to stay in place. Both helicopters finish their delivery flights while 1 Mech delivers supplies and 1 engineers begins extending route one. During the night NVA PT-76s rumble into the kill zone of Alpha Company's ambush. Alpha surprises with a salvo of LAW unguided rockets, but the remaining tracks lay waste to the front squad and Alpha is forced to withdraw into the trees. -3 H&M in Cheetos Thursday Thursday passes without event as 1st Armor covers the retreat of Alpha Company. 1 Mech is redirected to protect the firebase. Friday Bravo Company reaches Hamburger Hill +1 H&M. Without transport, Charlie Company marches out the front gate for a recce. Monday, Wk 5 AM A couple of minor supply moves are completed, 1st Mechanized reaches the firebase. Washington seems to accept that you are doing well holding off the onslaught and your Political standing has increased. I think you have managed to avoid the lose H&M three turns in a row trigger for another NVA base. Little sign of the VC other than their mines. I'm surprised Echo Company didn't spot any making their way up the road, perhaps they spawn directly on the road? Lots of NVA out there. It's just that without Green Berets on the front lines, you can't see them. You have 9,744PP. I didn't buy the chopper in the end since as it turned out your logistics coped without causing many delays, potentially now you could afford a GB or other unit. I'm away this weekend and got a nine day course starting on the 24th, so I'll probably be a little slow on the updates for the next week or two.
