There are people who will game the system and claim to be the opposite gender for nefarious purposes. There are also people who will try to "out" others for not resembling their gender enough (this already happens). These risks have to be carefully considered and weighed against the rights of transgendered people. Gender relations have certainly gotten better over time, but we've got a ways to go.

Well I feel like we've reached common ground? Gender relations can likely always be improved but given the emphasis the issue gets overall, I think it's greatly overblown in the U.S. and we should be focusing our attentions elsewhere. Third wave feminism is in fact detrimental IMO to the development of women as I think it actually serves to drive women away from science, technology, or medicine and encourages them to get useless gender studies degrees, focus on very frivilous activism, or at worst push them into politics, where they'll just become assholes. It's a very self-destructive ideology and I'm not at all surprised that the previous generations of feminists don't associate with what the term has come to describe. In truth, if we could all have reasonable discussions of sensitive subjects without descending into pointless accusations or labels of bigotry, we can actually get a lot of things done. Somebody send the memo to D&D

I think it comes down to this. In real life, most people are polite and understanding, but on the internet you have people that think they should be free from being able to be trolled because of things like their sexual identity, gender, race, or lack of l33t gaming skills and in my opinion, that is bullshit!

Back in my day, gender and biological sex meant literally the same thing. It seems the idea that "sex and gender are not the same thing" has really only gained traction in the past 10 or so years after twitter and tumblr became things. Funny, that.

See, the thing about this kind of ideology is as soon as you accept one thing, the next is thrust upon you. So you worked out a framework for transpeople, and it makes a fair bit of sense. Now you have to accept genderqueer people which flies in the face of biology, sociology, common sense and all the stuff you just worked out to explain transpeople. In no time transracial and transdisability will be treated as real issues by these types.
