The real question is why Jack Ryan had to explain what turbulence was to a flight attendant. I guess he's just so much smarter than everyone else in the world.

The Red October was experimental, not a prototype- so it had already completed its sea trials. A decent book and the first of the Technothriller milfic. The gold standard, however, is Red Storm Rising. Really Really good mil fic books include: Team Yankee Arc Light

That would seem to suggest it's not about to go on deterrent patrol any time soon.

So, was Jack Ryan or Captain Rameus right about Admiral Halsey? I kinda think Rameus was right that he was reckless and the win at Leyte really was just a miracle .

He and the other officers were conspiring. They could totally order a better supply of food to be packed. No one is losing their poo poo up the chain of command because Tupolov is packing his boat with extra biscuits. Now the nuke, well gently caress, they didn't figure out he was speaking with a Scottish brogue so I'm gonna guess missle security wasn't amazing.

John Denver Hoxha posted:So, was Jack Ryan or Captain Rameus right about Admiral Halsey? Rameus was right, and like you said Taffy 3 was a legit god-drat miracle and is deserving of a James Cameron-esq budget film. It got to the point where they were charging Japanese battleships with destroyers and destroyer escorts, and aircraft were dropping depth charges, strafing, and pretending to strafe battleships to keep them distracted. The best quote is when the Japanese were getting close to the escort carrier. . . "As anti-aircraft gunners observed helplessly, an officer cheered them by exclaiming, "just wait a little longer, boys, we're suckering them into 40-mm range."

that's just how soviet military was back then, always ready. american dogpigs could have launched a surprise nuclear attack at any second and you needed every nuke ready and every hand on deck to deter them. those nukes on the submarine probably saved billions of lives.

notZaar posted:So what if you shoot a nuke with a bullet? You'll have a dinged nuke, big deal Actually It's last ditch procedure for the Nuclear Emergency Support Team to just rake suspected nuclear weapons with gunfire because even just a little damage will disrupt the mechanisms and potentially prevent an atomic reaction. I read this years ago so I'm not sure if new nukes have address the weakness to gunfire

Yeah they're pretty complex devices actually it's not just TNT with a fuse on it.Toadvine posted:I read this years ago so I'm not sure if new nukes have address the weakness to gunfire The only thing they could do really is armor it which would add tons of weight to it and potentially gently caress up the yield somehow if it was a smaller device. Definitely not gonna proof a missile against small arms fire, it'd add too much weight for marginal gain.

I think I figured this out. The submarine is designed to only operate with the missiles in place, for the ... uh .. beyonce? When you fire them the tubes are flooded with water and the sub can still operate, but it's only a temporary measure because the water is corrosive in the long run.

Looking for small-unit level stuff with proper combat, not a bunch of scenes of guys walking down Pentagon corridors or terrst-hunting in New York or whatever Yeah, good poo poo is pretty hard to come by. The problem is, pretty much anything post 9/11 is all Terrorist Hunt... Actually, 9/11 really hosed Clancy up. A big plot point Executive Decision (I think?) was flying an airliner into the capitol. Seeing that scenario played out irl really did a number on him. That's why everything that came after really kind of took a nose dive in quality. I'll take a look through my kindle at current stuff and write up what's good. Now! For small unit stuff?! You can't go wrong with the Brotherhood of war series. It follows the same characters. The first book was written in 1986, and starts at the close of WWII, and follows the same characters as they progress through their career and as the battlefield changes from WWII to Vietnam, and the Cold war of the 1980's. I highly suggest it. Book I, The Lieutenants Book II, The Captains Book III, The Majors Book IV, The Colonels Book V, The Berets Book VI, The Generals Book VII, The New Breed Book VIII, The Aviators Book IX, Special Ops ... Also, check out Larry Bond-- he's they guy who basically co-wrote Red Storm Rising and I actually like him MORE than Clancy. The set pieces and scenarios are are pretty interesting too. it's nice to have something more than "USA VS. RUSSIA OR CHINA OR SOME OTHER GODLESS COMMUNIST NATION: Cauldron: Germany and France vs. US and Eastern Euro Red Phoenix: North Korea invades South Vortex: South Africa and Cuba (The equipment in this is loving rad as poo poo) Bond also has a great sub thriller called Dangerous Ground. Good poo poo

But it requires a very exact timing so I don't really know. But yea, as was said earlier missiles and rockets are crazy sensitive; if you shot at one with an automatic rifle you'd probably ruin it. Spec ops dudes use their high-caliber sniper rifles to shoot missiles and stuff.
