How many times will New Orleans flood before they decide that building a city below sea level is a dumb loving idea and everyone leaves and abandons it?

poo poo is all messed up. I took off work today and tomorrow to help clean up a friends house in Ponchatoula. (Tangipahoa parish.) It was strange rolling through the backwoods, talking to locals to find the best drivable routes, and slowly paddling down streets I know to get to the house. It's a race against time for them to get the lower four feet of drywall off and get the insulation out before mold moves up past the 4' mark. We got everything that's destroyed out today, but as its only accessible by canoe right now it's was impossible to get all the salvageable stuff out to the trucks. We only need the water to drop 3-4" for vehicle access, so hopefully the river goes down enough. (It's past cresting, so we should be good.) It's worth the effort to help out, if we can beat the mold and finish the soda-blast/bleach treatment in the next few days, it will be the difference between getting them back in the house In 3-4 months instead of 6-8 months. Welp, that's my story. Going to bed because I'm exhausted, and I gotta wake up at 5:15 to get back on the road and back to the swamp. People often ask what they can do to help in situations like this. In addition to the usual Red Cross/donations to shelters/food drives, consider just volunteering. If you live anywhere near the flooded areas, find a friend (or friend of a friend) whose house is flooded and go help. Hell, any church in the south can point you in the right direction. Many hands make a load light. As for why we rebuild, what the gently caress else are we gonna do? It's a freak storm this time, places got flooded that have never before.

Question: when the water got to lets say... Like a foot high, why didn't everyone go like "better get in my car and take a mini road trip to a not flooded area"

also it's a big huge rainstorm and roads are dangerous when there's that much that's already fell and it's coming down that hard you're really more busy tryin to sandbag your front door or pile everything up in the attic by that point

Prorat posted:Question: when the water got to lets say... Like a foot high, why didn't everyone go like "better get in my car and take a mini road trip to a not flooded area" Because flash floods are hella scary. You likely wouldn't get far before the floodwaters took out your car and force you to abandon it's shelter entirely or be trapped within it.

Prorat posted:Question: when the water got to lets say... Like a foot high, why didn't everyone go like "better get in my car and take a mini road trip to a not flooded area" When the water is 1' where you are it may very well be much higher in other areas. Hope there are not any low areas on your escape to higher ground that may be a significant distance away.

Plus, 1' is enough for some cars to float or blow their engines from sucking water into surprisingly low intakes. And if the water's moving, that's enough to just push many around. Your ability to drive can go well before your ability to stay. More photos.
