Welcome to the Future

Let's VR!

What is "VR"?

Why, Virtual Reality, of course! Movie and game developers have been trying to make passable virtual reality games and equipment for decades, but we are finally reaching a point where computers are strong enough to actually run the tech and create a fully designed, fully manipulable environment.

So what are we doing this with?

There are a few options, the HTC Vive, Occulus Rift, and starting in October, the PS VR. Each of these setups have their ups and downs. I personally will be using the Vive.

HTC Vive

The Vive is somewhat unique due to the fact that it uses "Lighthouses", which are little boxes that you put in the corners of your play area, to triangulate the location of your headset and controllers. This allows for a high degree of accuracy in tracking, and also allows for physical movement around a preset area of your room which is mirrored in the game. In other words, if you take a step forward then you do the same in the game.

The Vive is being pushed hard by Steam by integrating it with the Steam UI, but it is buggy and does still have a relatively high price for such a headset (A scant $800!). That being said, it's probably the most "feature complete" headset on the market.

What will you be playing?

Anything! I will be starting with some of the more "basic" VR games like The Lab, Pirate Space Trainer, Raw Data, and so on. From there it will be whatever comes across my plate, for better or for worse.

Man, I wish that I could get in on this awesome LP action...

Fear not, Hypotetical Thread Patron! If you have poor enough self control to own a VR setup and want to LP then you are more than happy to participate and post your videos in this thread. Just post them in here with some details and we can get you set up with your own section in the OP. If you have any questions feel free to PM me, or for those without Platinum I can be reached at @Dreamshipwreck on Twitter.

I want to make bad decision of my own, where do I find more information about the actual hardware?

You might try the individual threads that we have for VR

It does when you start out but you end up adapting to it fairly quickly. Its only really jarring when you accidentally set your destination too close to a wall and end up with it two inches from your "nose", which can be pretty startling.

It's one of those things where it could be better but it's the best method that we have right now, otherwise you'd get simulation sickness from even basic games.

I'm interested in the future of VR games, but I think the main hurdle for the medium is going to be getting over the desire to make glorified tech demos, and not making entire games that hinge on gimmicks. I remember when the DS was brand new and devs kept making games where you had to do everything with the touch screen and they were all really annoying, but by the time the 3DS came out, the touch screen became way less of a gameplay focus and turned into a convenience for flipping through menus and information on the fly.

That being said, the opening part of the video I had to skip through because of the Cloverfield cam. Is it possible to keep the vision more horizontally stable? At some points, even when you're just looking straight ahead at nothing during an explanation, the camera starts tilting 45 degrees and it's really jarring. The archery section is noticeably better though

There are some more decent games on the horizon, and some are a bit more "real" than others. I'll be showing off Hard Data, Out of Ammo, and possibly Final Approach, all three of which are games unto themselves rather than the "stand still and shoot stuff" demo things.

And the intro is a bit shakey, I do apologize for that. It is hard to record steadily when there isn't anything to focus on, especially since I was moving around a lot to show off the controllers and such, plus I have a habit of talking with my hands when explaining at length. I am endeavoring to keep the amount of Tilt-o-whirl vision to a minimum, although some of the more active games will require me to move around quite a bit.

Sure! Honestly, even if you get hit with a claim for the music they may just want monetization rights, you can still leave it up. When I do an Audioshield one I will probably be doing some obscure Newgrounds music from a long time ago, but you can do anything without *too* much worry.

Audioshield: In Which Our Hero Flails To The Beat

Audioshield is the VR analogue to Audiosurf. In it, you're holding two shields (in my case, more like cestuses) colored blue and orange, and use them to swat away matching colored balls, holding them together to block the rare purple ball. The balls are generated at speeds and angles dictated by the music you're playing. I can't say it's always a brilliant matchup, the song beat and the balls, but once you're in there you don't have time to much care, at least on the highest difficulty setting.

A strange factor about recording this is that the 2D mirror I can actually record seems to have its camera placed somewhere above where my head was. That, or the very different field of view, makes things seem like they're coming in lower; when I was wearing the headset, they were coming just below my face, rather than down towards my chest like it appears in the video. Near the end I tried to duck a little to demonstrate the changing view. Similarly, the FOV doesn't show it but I was side stepping like a crazy person during some segments. Finally, in the headset there is a brief sepia-colored scanline effect when you miss; here in the recording you just see a line indicating the path of travel of what you missed.

The best shield to use for Audioshield is the Monarch, as it covers the most space. I'd record some of it and other Vive games, but it's too drat hot to actually use it. That and going above the highest difficulty level generates a large amount of sweat.

CuddleCryptid

I personally like the Cestuses more because I find I have more issues catching the ones on the edges rather than those right in front of me so the little side wing is nice.

I do agree on the workout of it, it's hilarious going through my twitch VODS and listening to myself slowly losing energy as this god.drat.song.will.not.end.

E: This was my fourth attempt at recording it, and each time I had different issues. I didn't notice the cursor being present on the screen, but that should be fixed in future videos. Goddamn it. Also the text being off to the side is unfixable running it in VR mode.

And I tried recording the second video but it launched in a different resolution :suicide:

Yeah, fair warning to people reading this thread, the videos here are going to be pretty wonky because every game handles the VR-to-Desktop translations differently. Something like H3HG (which I will be posting as soon as I figure out how to encode in Premire) is shown at full resolution and no borders on Desktop while Out of Ammo is a teeny tiny little preview box by comparison and Budget Cuts has a god awful frame around it. We do our best but some games will just not translate well.

You say that, but I found the cestuses (cestii? it IS roman) to be my best work, probably because they actively encourage you to punch out at the balls, whereas with the Monarchs I found myself getting my wrists turned the wrong way and the balls slipping by. It isn't as apparent in the video as I'd like it to be--see preceding comments--but I was whacking at those things with good (unnecessary) force.

(ed) I think if I do another Audioshield I'm gonna find a way to PIP in a webcam view of me looking like a giant toolbox so people have a better idea of just how much motion is involved. My knowledge of video editing is basically nonexistent, though.

Imagine I posted a link to a good demonstration of the Banana Bomb from the Worms series here. I didn't because I can't find a bloody decent in-match use, it's all terrible streams and squeezing a bunch of worms in one place to get max damage.

Another banana bomb video that, while featuring one of the worst attempts at using the bomb itself (albeit one that does show how it works rather well), leads to a pretty great chain of events:

I've been meaning to try my hand at streaming Tiltbrush to Twitch. Anyone here messed with that sort of thing? I know it has built in chat support, but I assume I'm on the hook for actually recording it?

Edit - It was fairly painless but there doesn't seem to be any Tiltbrush category on Twitch and I have yet to get the built in IRC stuff to work.

Edit edit - Renaming your sample Tiltbrush (sample).cfg file to 'Tiltbrush.cfg' does wonders.

It is trackpad locomotion, but apparently their implementation is spot on. I've also played The Solus Project which uses trackpad locomotion and it was fine for me. That and I've been tinkering with Dolphin VR to get Metroid Prime 3 working.

Onward's method of solving trackpad locomotion is as follows: Slow walking speed with speed control using the position of the non-dominant hand + how much you're moving the trackpad and it accelerates from nothing instead of just pushing you. It sounds great, and I can't wait to try it.
