When you think of quintessential American filmmakers, I don't think there's many in the same rank as Martin Scorsese.

He started making films as part of the wave of New Hollywood filmmakers that brought a new freshness to cinema in the late 60s/early 70s.

Scorsese always brings snappy camera work, editing, and outstanding musical choices to his films. Lead by an outstanding cast in nearly all of his work. He also makes New York City into a living, breathing character. He also has an incredibly varied filmography, ranging from gritty mob movies like Goodfellas and Mean Streets to sensitive dramas like The Age of Innocence and Kundun.

One thing I admire about Scorsese is that he's absolutely crazy about film. He's heavily inspired by greats like Powell & Pressburger, Howard Hawks, and Nicholas Ray. I'd have to say part of why he's such a great filmmaker is because he's a complete expert on film. He's even made several documentaries just about films - one 4-hour doc on American cinema and another on Italian films.

He makes good flicks but The Departed is grossly inferior to Infernal Affairs.

The poll in the OP should have been "are you talking to me?" and it be a checkbox with both options as "yes."

Gangs of New York is so good, it's practically begging to be adapted into an open-world sandbox game.

I really liked Shutter Island too.

Goodfellas is a perfect movie.

Also, I love how he cast his parents in several of his films. His mother voices Rupert's mother in The King of Comedy and is Tommy's mother in Goodfellas. I haven't seen it, but I think Italianamerican, an early 70s documentary, is mostly about his parents.

For his recent films, Hugo is probably my favorite since Goodfellas. Even cooler that it's one of the best 3-D films I've seen.

Hugo wasn't what I expected but it did teach me all about that guy who did that Journey to the Moon movie and now I feel like I appreciate the origins of cinema more.

I thought Wolf of Wall Street was one of the best movies I had ever seen and I wish it was a miniseries or TV show because 3 hours was too short, not even exaggerating.

If you haven't seen it, do it now.

Probably because of all the colorfully dressed gangs vying for power in a large open area with various factions offering missions to the fresh-faced newcomer arriving in town with a secret mission of revenge.

Casino is my favorite, I could watch it every loving day and it's a shame people didn't give a gently caress about it because it looked like a rehash of Goodfellas with Joe Pesci in the exact same role and similar themes. Still love Casino though.

Wolf of Wall Street was awesome

It's a 3 hour version of the Henry's Bad Day section of Goodfellas.

Better yet, I watched it when I had a fever from the flu.

Me too. I saw Casino before I saw Goodfellas, so maybe that's the reason, but today I still enjoy Casino more. Yet my mind tells me that Goodfellas is better somehow.

My personal favorite Scorsese film is Italianamerican.

Martin interviews his parents in the 70s about their family history for about 45 minutes. It's not his best, but it's unique and precious. It's also strange how he today looks like a perfect amalgam of the two of them.
