E: I totally forgot I had Cogs on my hated players list. He's the one who bumped AJ off my list. My mistake, sorry. I also forgot that Chapman's a Cub now. I still think of him as a Red.

For the unenlightened, Carlos Martinez is awesome. A top pitching prospect, he first got noticed for his Twitter feed during spring training a few years back when it became clear that he was trying to bookmark porn and was instead posting it to his Twitter feed. Pages and pages of porn, just what you'd expect from a tech-challenged 20-something. Just porn, all the way down.

NSFW: http://deadspin.com/carlos-martinezs-twitter-favorites-a-big-ol-wall-of-1530062520

From there he gained notoriety for being extremely fun-loving and expressive in the dugout. He dubbed himself the official water boy of the team, giving anyone who hit a home run a cup of water when they return. This has since evolved into splashing anyone who hits a home run in the face. According to the Cardinals' broadcast team the other players on the team ask the trainers to only partially fill the cups, since Martinez gets really into it.

Carlos also takes his conservation duties very seriously. Whether it's wildlife outreach (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i0upmFdvluA) or recycling (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0aLvW1w1EYo and https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu7RCk-xfKo). In case anyone thinks CarMart is all personality and not a good pitcher, he's also pretty good at baseball. An All Star last year and the best of the Cardinals' rotation this year, he's extremely good and fun to watch. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TLWujau8_PQ

YouTube videos aside, I've seen him play peekaboo with small children for long stretches during games when they look bored in the stands, fake out ballhawks before handing balls to little kids and pay Jeremy Hazelbaker $15 to eat a bug during a game. Fine, one more YouTube video about him.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5dUQRXYi3lI

Vote CarMart!

Where were you last year, jerk? I'm pretty sure Yadi was my #1 last year and he didn't crack the top of the overall list because everyone else hated neck tattoos. I think my #3 vote for Waino last year was the highest of my favorites who had a decent showing. I was also the only one last year who voted for Grichuk. Sadly, Colon leveraged his way onto my list this year and bumped Grich just off of my top ten.

I have received 33 ballots for Most Loved Player (down six from last year, but that's perfectly fine), and 30 for Most Hated (up 30 from last year -- infinite growth!). Let us begin.

In true Xenophonic fashion, I'll start by posting who you didn't love.

MLB's best ERA without receiving a single Most Loved vote: 2.61, belonging to Jon Lester

Working theories: Possible residual hatred from 2011's Fried-Chickengate, possibly being overshadowed by Arrieta and Hendricks. The world may never know. Either way, MadBum should thank the person whose votes I almost forgot to add, because this could easily have been him instead.

MLB's best batting average without receiving a single Most Loved vote: .340, belonging to Daniel Murphy

Working theories: None. Daniel Murphy is a saint.

Most Hated #25 (5-way tie), 10 pts: Joredandransbatt Paverzansonvey :haw:

Coincidentally everyone who tied for #25 did so as a result of one single #1 vote. Your pet hatreds are serious business, SAS. Without further ado...

Joe Panik
Team: San Francisco Giants
Debut: June 21, 2014

What's to hate? Nothing. He was an obvious spite vote and is a serviceable second baseman. At any rate, if you really wanted to hate him, you could hate him on the grounds that he might be Buster Posey's evil clone.

Jered Weaver
Team: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Debut: May 27, 2006

What's to hate? Jamie Moyer-esque fastball velocity and a non-Jamie Moyer-esque age, for one. Otherwise, he seems to be a normal and okay person (edit: LOL I lied -- he likes to throw at people's heads for no reason). We're still pretty early in the list.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqr2k8L2mMc

edit2: Also, I forgot he was the guy that got trolled by Kyle Seager.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sK27yQPAidI

Alejandro De Aza
Team: New York Mets
Debut: April 2, 2007

What's to hate? He started out the 2016 season absolutely abominably, but seems to have worked out whatever kinks were troubling him. Again, probably not actually a bad person.

Dansby Swanson
Team: Atlanta Braves
Debut: August 17, 2016

What's to hate? He has a normal first name (James) but CHOOSES to go by Dansby. Also, he plays for Atlanta. The dude hasn't even been in the Majors for a month, he's barely had any time to do anything truly hateable.

Matt Harvey
Team: New York Mets
Debut: July 26, 2012

What's to hate? The media in particular seems to hate Matt Harvey's nonexistent bad attitude. When he performs well and owns it, he's seen as arrogant. When he performs poorly and gets down on himself for it, he's seen as useless/overemotional/whatever else. Matt Harvey did nothing wrong and does not deserve to be on this list. :colbert:

What teams have really been personally victimized by EYB and have a legitimate basis to complain though? I don't think holding a grudge makes sense if you're knocked out at the divisional level because at that point the hope's still too remote. Ditto for the wildcard game, 2014 Pirates fans. That would just leave LCS and World Series losers. Each year that the Giants won they beat the defending NL Champions in the LCS; it's hard to hold a grudge when you won the year prior. Who's that leave? Rangers fans, Tigers fans, Royals fans? Royals fans won the next year, seems silly to complain. Rangers fans lost in more heartbreaking fashion against the Cardinals than they did the Giants. Tigers fans may have a legitimate beef I guess?

This all supposes that blinding hatred among professional sports fans is a completely rational thing, of course.
