Get more than 16 GB of ram people lose their drat minds. It's literally $80 more dollars to get 32 GB. Just get the 32 GB. Future proof it cause in a couple years GPUs will probably have more than 16 GB.

You can pry my lenovo w520 out of my dead, cold hands. I've replaced the keyboard/trackpad three times and I keep the old ones as a beautiful memento. The shiny wear on the keys and the pad are wonderful, they are art. Bitches suck without an ssd tho.

I have a (still) powerful 4-core i7 laptop with BluRay drive I use for everything. Buf it weighs near 3kg so us a bitch to take places. I do like having the option though. My desktop is just a backup computer in case the laptop breaks. I found it on the street and replaced a couple of swollen capacitors for about a dollar and a little time, and installed Windows 7. The next upgrade will be a high-end Microsoft Surface, when I'll give the desktop to a friend. Desktops are cheap, far more easily upgradable and far easier to service yourself than laptops, just not too portable.

edit: ^^^ and this ^^^ I've built only one desktop, and you can too! 1. Find out what you want* 2. Watch a NewEgg video or something 3. Buy poo poo 4. Build Buy pre-built pc all you want. But don't dismiss building your own because "it's too complicated". It's easy as poo poo. *Wow, SSDs must have come down in price. I don't even have one because they weren't worth the price five years ago.

The Bananana posted:I keep thinking about pulling the trigger and building one of these. Still worth it? Or will laptops soon pull ahead? Laptops will never pull ahead. It will always be cheaper and easier to stick components in a big box than in a tiny wafer. It will always be easier to cool a desktop than a laptop. A desktop will always be easier to upgrade than a laptop (important either if you need to always have the latest thing, or are poor/cheap and want to keep your computer running for as long as humanly possible.) The only way laptops will ever surpass desktops is if we give up our fetish for making things smaller and thinner If people were willing to go back to laptops the size of a briefcase that weigh 15 pounds, then laptops could possibly match desktops.. That would give you room for a big screen, a big battery, a proper keyboard, a cooling system, and so on.

I'm running a Sandybridge i7 2600K with 16 gigs of ram on a machine I built in 2010. The only upgrade I plan on doing is swapping the two HDDs out for a SSD next year after taxes. Haven't had any issues at all. Desktops own.

Stop stop stop stop stop!!!! We are up to 4k ultra on PC and we will eventually be there on a laptop. Just curious how you believe this march towards a resolution that encompasses human sight will ever stop. I have a 43 inch monitor at 4:4:4 chroma and I am looking forward to MORE. BETTER.

Garcin posted:Stop stop stop stop stop!!!! My eyeballs are middle-aged and getting older every day. I can't tell the difference between 480p and 1080p, so more resolutions doesn't mean much to me. However, if I did care desktops would still be better. Putting in the latest video card is much easier on a desktop than a laptop. Getting a new monitor is easy, while replacing the screen on your laptop with a higher resolution screen . . . is that even possible?
