He had been Leiutenant Governor of in a blue state) (the Democrats lost that election because the Governor divorced his wife to marry his secretary), and he was an unsuccessful senatorial candidate. The GOP leadership chose Steele because Obama had just been elected and they wanted to establish their own minority cred. That was why 2 of the 4 candidates for the job were black.

But you absolutely are right about why they fired him. He was too pigmented for the GOP base to accept.

But she was actually discussing the issue in good faith and overcoming a sheltered Catholic background. I understand that this usually is not the case, and most parents won't listen. But drat, the choice argument is so loving dumb.

Huh, apparently so. I always assumed it was just the name of the van that the police used (like it was an Austin Maria or something), especially as in old TV shows and films it always seems to be the same model of van, e.g. as in Withnail and I:
