I've been bitten by the Halloween bug this year and I watch to watch a bunch of movies I've never seen before or have seen but don't remember. Here is my list so far.

Don't Look Now
The Innocents (1961)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Repulsion
The Devil's Backbone
Fright Night (1985)
Inside (2007)
Session 9
The Phantom Carriage
In the Mouth of Madness
The Vanishing
Audition
The Cabin In The Woods
Eyes Without A Face
Freaks (1932)
The Omen (1976)
The Blob (1988)

I've just been googling "best horror movies" lists and picking out things that seem interesting

Hey, I'm in the same boat as you! I've been slowly collecting horror movies over the last year (my brain was subconsciously preparing for this month, I guess) and I'm just gonna go all out. The theater I work at will be showing Night of the Living Dead as well as the original Friday the 13th, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street, one each weekend in October, and between those, the movies I own, and a few others I'll fill out the list with, I'm gonna try to do 31 movies in 31 days. The four I named are already on the list, as well as Shin Godzilla (because I'm flying out of Chicago the day after it opens there, so why the gently caress not make a quick stop to see it?) and a few others in my collection. I'll post again when I start watching them and look at the movies in my collection.

I recently discovered the joys of TCM, and they really are going all out this October. I made a list of all of the movies I want to watch or record to watch later, and I figured I'd share it with y'all. I didn't get everything, but I got everything from the theme nights (their "Stars of the Month" are Christopher Lee and Frankenstein, so expect a lot of Hammer Horror and Frankenstein movies) and a bunch of the rest of the great movies they've got. God help you without DVRs though because a good portion of these movies are showing at ungodly hours in the night (or for you night owls, at like 8am). I bolded some of the absolute stone cold classics they've got going, but there's enough variety here for everyone.

All times are CST:
Roar (1am 10/1)
Frankenstein (7pm 10/2)
Bride of Frankenstein (8:30pm 10/2)

Curse of the Cat People (3:45am 10/3)

What better way to start off a horror month than Frankenstein (1) and Bride of Frankenstein (2)? I'm coming into most of the classics without having seen them before, and I'm glad I started with these two, they're really fantastic (which should go without saying). I do think I like the original a bit better, despite the second clearly having a bigger budget (some things in Hollywood never change).

The original has much better pacing and a better Elizabeth, and there's no obnoxious loud maid. Both have amazing atmosphere and setting, but I think the biggest difference is the use of sound in the original. The scenes set in the village have this constant cacophony of voices and music and happiness, which contrast really well with the scenes of the monster all being comparatively silent, especially the scene with the little girl. And when the mood turns from celebratory to a hunting party, the cacophony follows the angry men hunting the monster. It really served to highlight Karloff's performance. He does so much with just animalistic sounds and and his face and physicality. Boy howdy is that a magnificent performance.

I feel like there's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said, but even though this isn't the origin of horror, I feel like there's really no better place to start, maybe save Dracula (which doesn't air on TCM until the end of the month so that's when I'll be watching it).

8. Vice Presidential Debate (2016)

I dunno why the media felt the need to hype up this movie so much for the last couple of days, to the point where it debuted on multiple channels at the same time. Despite being about very scary things in the real world, it somehow ended up being really boring to watch- there wasn't even any blood or anything. The obvious sequel baiting at the end was really annoying too. The 90+ minute uninterrupted long-take was kind of impressive I guess, though it felt kind of stagey after a while. Not really a movie I'd recommend for repeat viewings.

I will say, the actor who played the villain was very convincing, I think he played an evil senator in one of the X-Men movies.
