This pisses me off so bad. I loving LOVE oxtail, but that poo poo works out to like 19 bucks for four pieces here. Ground beef I can usually get for $3/lb for 80/20 (burgers should never be made leaner than this, fuckers) but 93/7 even on sale is 5 or more. We end up eating a lot of tri tip and London broil, because they're big pieces that work out cheaper in the end, and make leftovers for a few days. That and thighs and legs.

I bought tritip last week for $4/lb. I know everyone talks about ca's COL, but it really feels like our meat and produce prices are way better than yours. Produce was expected, but everytime I hear other people's meat prices, I get shocked.

When people post CA I can't tell if they are talking about California or Canada. I assume California because it has more people than China but maybe canuckistan deserves more recognition. I've been playing a lot with a Traeger since Memorial Day and have found that meats you can smoke are cheap. Like pork shoulders that feed a shizton of people can be had for $2/pound. The best score was a usda Prime brisket (14+pounds) at 3.29/pound. It was a magical cut of beef.

Brisket is amazing but I never see it under 5/lb here in the real CA. Pork shoulder I'm pissed if I pay over 1.50 though. It's almost always on sale for 98 cents a pound.

Yeah, smoking meat is the best. USDA prime brisket is 2.99/lb at my Costco and pork shoulder is so cheap I don't even look at the price. By the time you're done trimming and cooking it you will have lost about half the starting weight so it's not as cheap as it seems but it's still a ton of great meat for not much money. I'm probably going to get a green mountain grills pellet smoker next week. My weber smokey mountain with bbq guru temp controller is nice but I would like to be even more lazy (and have a larger cooking area) with my meat smoking. Pellet smoker that I can control with my phone? gently caress yeah!

This is a good point but I also think of this the way I do ice cream. A quality portion is always superior to a quality portion and always leaves me much more satisfied. It's an improvement on my quality of life. Galler posted:I'm probably going to get a green mountain grills pellet smoker next week. The Traeger was the cheap 'decide if I like it/am I any good at it?' option and I'm hooked. After I finish smoking a meat I start to think what and how soon I'll do it again. After I'm ready to move on I'm going with the Yoder Y-640. The things you can attach to your (phone of choice) so you can be extra pro/lazy is a sign this is the golden age we're living in.

Yoders are really impressive but just way too much cash for me at this point. I'll probably do like you did with the Traeger and if I actually manage to use the GMG to the point that it fails I'll replace it with a Yoder (or build my own). I've probably averaged 10 or so pork shoulders a year for the past 4 years with my Weber but now that I've sorta figured out brisket (last night's was amazing) I'm probably going to be doing this a lot more. The main thing that's prevented me from smoking things more often is just the hassle of setting up the WSM at 11pm and it looks like the pellet smoker setup process is pretty trivial.

Meat price discussion. Meh. Albertson's tends to have some pretty kickass sales on meat every weekend. I've seen boneless skinless chicken breasts for $1.88/lb, 85% ground beef is on sale right now for $2.99/lb, etc. Downside is if you're not buying the big family packs, you have to get it from the meat counter to get the sale price. I'm usually cooking for one, and my freezer isn't exactly yuuuuge, so family packs are massive overkill for me. Means I have to buy all of my meats on the weekend (well, Thu-Sun) to get the best price, but it's worth it.sidewalk gum posted:So who has a slow cooker here? I'm thinking of getting one but I need recipes my kids will eat. I do. This one, to be specific. It's pretty great for stews and soups. I already learned never to cook beans in it though. I think everyone in my family owns one of these: https://www.amazon.com/West-84905-5-Quart-Oblong-Shaped-Cooker/dp/B001AH5H0A and they're fantastic. Whoa, griddle AND slow cooker? I still have an electric griddle from when I lived in a dorm. Anything with an exposed heating element was verboten, but anything with it built in was fine (so no toaster ovens, but the griddle was fine). Unless you lived in a room with a kitchenette (I did for one semester). It's a bit bulky to use in my tiny rear end kitchen here, but it's come in handy a few times to keep stuff warm when I'm cooking a ton of food. It'd be nice to have something that did both. GnarlyCharlie4u posted:My Verizon Internet is out and they have to come replace the ONT sometime tomorrow. How the hell did you kill an ONT? And what's it doing in your garage? They usually mount those fuckers outside on a single family home, though the PSU is generally inside. Mine is in my bedroom closet, but only because I'm in an apartment. And Frontier took over out here and ran that poo poo into the ground bad enough that I want to cut every fiber strand to the building (not really going to do this, but my god Frontier is a horrible dumpster fire of a company).

I need some goddamn anger management therapy. Dude swerved over from the left lane into the right lane and nearly clipped me. I honked and flipped him off and he smiled and waved. So of course I followed him, he turned at the next light and pulled into a Culvers parking lot. I circled the lot and pulled up when he was out of his car and yelled "Hey fucker, learn how to drive. You're lucky I have somewhere to be or I'd put my foot up your rear end." He said "hey man, I have my kids here" to which I responded "gently caress you and gently caress your kids." and I sped off. It's been a long time since I had any rage issues but I was ready to jump out of the car and murder that guy.
