Vote shit sandwich or the shit sandwich gets it!
Like, you know what would have been really clever? The spy finding a copy of the ley line map, photographing and sending it to Germania. The Germanians then go "what the poo poo is this? It's obviously connected to the witch, but how?" and then spend a couple episode investigating witch attacks before ultimately discovering that every one outside the marked areas was faked.

Yeah but then you wouldn't have had the dramatic tension and cost savings of the repeated frames of goku running or flying or whatever.

Today was...pretty dull, in all honesty. Show really hasn't leaned into its characters like I'd want it to in a few eps, now.

Yeah that's my big criticism of this show in general. It has so much more potential for exploring its characters than it attempts.

I mean I complained early that Fine was flat, but most of them are pretty flat. The show just doesn't want to flesh them out.

Yeah. It was more defensible early on because I thought eps 1 and 2 actually did pretty good jobs introducing the basis of Fine and Izetta's characters, respectively, and then it made sense to spend a couple of eps focusing more on the broader war effort. But then when they have an opportunity to take a midseason break from that and decide to spend most of its runtime on rather flat gags and fanservice it's pretty disappointing. And...look, I know I've gotten a deserved reputation around these parts as a rabid Yuri-liker, but so far the war stuff, while not bad, just hasn't been well written or animated enough for the show to really stand out if it's not going to lean into that angle. Still time for the show to stick the landing, but I'm losing faith that it's going to happen. Just kind of a shame.

I'm in pretty much the same spot as Spiritus/Cialis/Mokinokaro, I think. There's a lot of potential here that feels like is being squandered, especially over eps 4~6. We're not getting a lot of character development for the main characters, and the political/military side doesn't quite feel well written enough to carry things. Hopefully they can get back into things with the next episode, since leaving the capital again after three episodes there will be a nice change of pace at least.

Poking around the staff's past works, neither the director nor the series comp guy have really done anything else I've enjoyed, so I guess it could just be a matter of taste.

Something of a return to form today. I wouldn't say Izetta and Fine got fleshed out per se, but they at least got a little bit of the one-on-one time that felt like it'd been missing from previous eps, and I enjoyed the battle quite a bit - good to see Izetta finally challenged.

I will say, having them find out about Izetta's weakness like this makes the whole business with the spy seem pretty redundant, and it looks like we're building towards an EVIL WITCH, which I'm not entirely sure I'm looking forward to. But we'll see.

Yeah, that episode was better than they have been. I'm still not 100% behind the show, but I'm not planning on dropping it anytime soon.

Couple of things I noticed:

-So the United States of Atlanta is supposed to be the US...who was the other guy from Louisiana supposed to represent? Is this a universe where the Union lost the civil war?

-Pretty sure Bowl Cut's hand in the poker game was the dead man's hand.

-Oh man, the Not-zis are making their own witch? That should be interesting.

air-dropped torpedoes typically do not arm until they have traveled a significant distance through the water for obvious reasons. british torpedoes of the era were alcohol-fueled, which might possibly have started a fire but probably not exploded when rammed into something while unarmed. furthermore,

also aircraft carriers were insanely vulnerable to an attack by conventional dive-bombing. admittedly the british could be excused for not knowing this in early 1940, but this puts the idea that they precisely calculated the amount of high explosive required to break not-graf-zeppelin's keel into some question

You guys, seriously. This show is kickass. Anti-tank rifle as witch's broom is kickass. The animation is slick. The music is rad as hell. The intelligence/propaganda stuff adds a whole extra layer of conflict. It's like you all hate fun. We even got Significant Hand Holding this past ep.

Also, the torpedoes were detonated with uh... magic, right... :smug:

Another pretty solid episode. Show still has a good shot at ending pretty strong.

-I swear to god Izetta and Fine better get to actually dance one of these days, that's twice the show's teased it. :argh:

-So I'm thinking miss white hair is either an artificial witch or a zombie of the original white witch. Either would make sense with her seemingly being awakened by Izetta's blood.

-I get that they didn't have a ton of specific evidence against Berkmann and Witch, but Fine not immediately sounding the alarm was a bit of a groaner.

-The whole arc with the spies was pretty rote, but well executed.

-gently caress, I didn't catch until the rewatch that Atlanta is going to be fighting against Eylstadt as well. God, I hope this show doesn't go for the tragic ending.

That's not really a good match to history. Generally the American response to things has been enthusiastic but ill-considered. With the exception of domestic affairs, there's been a lot of "Yes! We're helping! Enjoy FREEDOM, foreign nationals! Yes, FREEDOM sometimes smells like napalm. It's... we're working on it, alright?"

It's also rather uncommon for anyone to be enough of a loving moron to start a war against someone already fighting your enemies. For actual WWII, pre-war America largely hated the Soviets, with a decent amount of people going, essentially "Say what you will about Hitler, at least he's killing communists!" But when America decided Hitler was the real rear end in a top hat, suddenly you got songs like "Stalin wasn't stallin'!" and talk about how great Russia was, no really.

Then once the war was over, America immediately returned to hating the loving commies and planning to drop 21 kilotons of FREEDOM on their asses, because now they didn't have any other enemies to distract from hatred priority 1. Basic wartime politics.

If it was just "We're going to make very sure Eylstadt doesn't make trouble after this is done, and if the best method involves Mr. Feynman's fancy new toy... well. These things happen." then yes. It's well within the traditional patterns of world power bastardry.

But declaring a war against someone doing you a valuable service while they do you that service is dumb on a level even governments seldom manage. It's spending your resources to do something that your enemies are doing for you, for free.

well, operation unthinkable was bought up by churchill, and it was binned with barely a second thought. the western allies were exhausted, no one had the political will to carry on the war, and the soldiers would lose morale after suddenly changing from killing nazis to helping them kill russians. it took a while for western-soviet relations to deteriorate into the cold war

i think this idea is colored by the complicated relationship between japanese writers and the american military

or maybe it's because the us of atlanta are loving rear end in a top hat confederates
