EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay - A good team that hasn't regressed in any way. I feel like they underperformed a bit last year 2. Florida - A good team that redid its back end entirely, so I dunno I guess they'll still make the playoffs? 3. Montreal - Therrien lives to see another season -------------------- 4. Boston - Unless they discover some sort of age reversing salve for Chara, they're in trouble on defence 5. Buffalo - For no reason whatsoever I say Eichel has a sophomore slump 6. Ottawa - Eugene's savvy business moves at the deadline sees them plummet out of the playoffs post deadline 7. Detroit - An aging crumbling team for an aging crumbling city 8. Toronto - They'll be fun to watch I think? Metropolitan 1. Washington - Lose in the Conference Finals and take the nuclear option in the summer rather than staying the course 2. Pittsburgh - An early cup hangover but they come on strong in the second half again 3. New Jersey - I like the changes they made in the summer, I feel like Shero is slowly ending the defence mentality that defined them for a decade -------------------- 4. Philadelphia (WC) - Provorov sticks for the season and is in the calder discussion by year's end 5. NY Rangers (WC) - Not quite over the hill, but getting there. I figure they revamp hard next summer 6. Carolina - Good times Aho-y (but not quite yet) 7. NY Islanders - Just a gut feeling, and they'll probably be fine but they lost a lot of their depth in the summer and they were hardly overstocked last year 8. Columbus - Haha Torts, oh man. Thanks for the pick Jarmo! WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Nashville - They took an all world defence and added one of the top 3 defencemen in the game. They remind me of the 06 Ducks with basically 3 #1s on the back end and a multi-line offence. They're my cup pick 2. Dallas - Good offence, bad goaltending; sky blue, water wet 3. St. Louis - Losing Schwartz for a month or more again is a big loss, their offence is thinning quickly with Backes gone -------------------- 4. Chicago (WC) - Still a great team, they always seem to recover from a talent exodus so I say they do it again no sweat 5. Colorado (WC) - With a new coach and a bit more structure, they come out of a tight pack fighting for the 2nd WC spot 6. Minnesota - They just miss, no good reason as to why I picked Colorado over them. It's a coin toss 7. Winnipeg - They finish last in the death division because of my (ir)rational dislike of them Pacific 1. Los Angeles - They make the conference finals again and I continue to question why I like this sport 2. San Jose - One of the Joes hits a wall this year. Find out which one, NEXT ON NBC! 3. Anaheim - I have no idea what their plan was this summer. Canning Boudreau and riding Gibson in net? Yeesh -------------------- 4. Calgary - They're in the WC hunt but fall behind in the end. Bennett has a big year 5. Edmonton - McDavid is great but they can't seem to figure out how to surround him with real talent like the Pens did with Crosby 6. Arizona - Young! 7. Vancouver - Bad! EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay - I don't see any weaknesses really. Maybe they have a few too many "good" players and not enough truly great ones? Hedman could win the Norris. 2. Florida - Their offseason moves were excellent. I don't think they can beat Tampa in a series but they're close. 3. Boston - They should have made it last year. Rask rebounds. -------------------- 4. Montreal (WC) - I think they've probably got enough with a healthy Price. 5. Detroit - I don't buy the doom and gloom, but their D is really bad. 6. Buffalo - Getting there. 7. Toronto - Matthews is so loving good. Already better than Eichel imo. Babcock could have them in the playoffs soon. 8. Ottawa - I'd like to see Karlsson play for a good team but it isn't happening this year. Metropolitan 1. Pittsburgh - Crosby is in terminator mode. the Murray injury is worrisome but Fleury is a fine regular season goalie. Hopefully (for Pens fans) they're not dumb enough to stay with him when Murray gets back. 2. Washington - I still don't like them in a series vs Pittsburgh, and I think they'll be playing the entire year waiting for the playoffs. 3. NY Rangers - Still a ton of forward depth and Lundqvist. -------------------- 4. NY Islanders (WC) - They'll struggle, but I still like them more than Philly/NJ unless their goaltending lets them down (which it very well might). 5. Philadelphia - Provorov is really good but they're still shaky on the backend. 6. New Jersey - The defense is just so bad. Getting there but probably not this year. 7. Carolina - They're better than people realize, but there's still not enough there. 8. Columbus - They could make the playoffs if everything goes well, but it probably won't. WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Nashville - If Johansen plays like a true #1 I think they're the favorite in the West. 2. Dallas - As long as Seguin comes back healthy. 3. Chicago - Campbell is still a badass #4. It was hard to get a good read on Kempny in the WC but his skating was solid. -------------------- 4. Colorado (WC) - Agreed with ThinkTank. MacKinnon and Duchene looked incredible at the WC and I think with a real coach and a good season from Varly they can take the next step. 5. Winnipeg (WC) - As long as they start Helle I like them for a spot. So much young talent. They could be a serious contender really soon. 6. St. Louis - They'll probably make it but I think there's a good chance they don't so gently caress it. 7. Minnesota - Getting old and their young guys are mediocre compared to the rest of the division. Pacific 1. Los Angeles - Still pretty good unfortunately. 2. San Jose - Probably enough there for another run to the WCF. 3. Anaheim - Man the West sucks. I wan't to drop them but lol @ this division. -------------------- 4. Calgary - Close but no cigar. Sign Gaudreau you retards. 5. Edmonton - McDavid might win the scoring title but there's just not enough after him. 6. Arizona - Probably two years away. It's going to be weird when Edmonton/Arizona/Calgary supplant LA/SJ/ANA but it's going to be soon. 7. Vancouver - STANLEY CUP FINALS: Tampa Bay def Nashville WCF: Nashville def. EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay - they are really good 2. Florida - I like the moves they have made and while Jagr might eventually stop performing at a high level, their young guys are still good 3. Montreal - Carey Price I guess -------------------- 4. Boston (WC) - they have a pretty bad defense but some good forwards and a good goalie. Enough for a wild card 5. Detroit - very mediocre team and trending down IMO. 6. Toronto - not enough talent yet but on their way. 7. Ottawa - Karlsson is on an island 8. Buffalo - not yet. Metropolitan 1. Washington - good center depth with the Eller addition, good wing depth, pretty good defensive depth (though no real stud #1 guy), and a good goalie. 2. Pittsburgh - great team, but I'll just assume their roster explodes during the regular season which will put them at #2 instead of #1 in the division. Probably still a slightly better team than Washington. 3. Philadelphia - they really improved last season and while their depth isn't very good, they still have good high end talent on forward and I guess Mason is a good goalie now? -------------------- 4. NY Rangers (WC) - Henrik Lundqvist I guess. If his play drops or he is injured though I think the Rangers will miss the playoffs. 5. Carolina - still struggle to score and their goaltending situation stinks but their defense is rock solid and I like Bill Peters. I think they could easily overtake the Rangers for the WC if a few things go their way. 6. New Jersey - Hall for Larsson was criminal but I still think they are going to struggle to score. 7. NY Islanders - Fred Flintstone is still behind the bench, and while other teams in the division got better I don't really think the Islanders did. 8. Columbus - bad coach, horrible contracts. Maybe they'll luck out and get #6 in the division but right now they are the clear worst team in the Metro. WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Dallas - still have bad goaltending, still can score a billion goals. Good enough for #1 in the division 2. Nashville - everything about this team is great...except Pekka Rinne. 3. Minnesota - Bruce Boudreau is a fantastic regular season coach. There's nothing about their roster that makes me think they are a playoff team but Boudreau is just so good behind the bench. -------------------- 4. St. Louis (WC) - probably not as good as last season but good enough to make the playoffs as a WC. 5. Chicago (WC) - barely squeak into the playoffs. In any other division they are probably a top 3 team but the central is stacked. 6. Winnipeg - they'll still be decent but the division is too tough. 7. Colorado - they will be much better simply because they subtracted Patrick Roy, but their defense is still really bad. Pacific 1. Los Angeles - they are going to bore their way to the division title 2. San Jose - could be #1 in the division just as easily. 3. Calgary - their goaltending will improve enough to get them into the playoffs. Also while Gulutzan isn't great, he's better than Bob Hartley. -------------------- 4. Arizona - improved, but still not good enough to make the playoffs. 5. Anaheim - lol Randy Carlyle. 6. Edmonton - still bad. 7. Vancouver - probably the most depressing team in the NHL. I'll do an effortpost in a bit because I'm still trying to figure out who I feel like goes where, but I'm surprised to see so many "fewest goals" votes for Columbus. They were 17th in goals scored last season and were one of the first two teams to get four 20+ goal scorers last year (Chicago was the other).

Spring Break My Heart posted:Those numbers can fluctuate a lot year by year; Vancouver went from 6th to 29th without major injuries and their only big personnel loss being Nick Bonino. Teams can be really bunched up in that spot, they lose 22 goals and they're behind Carolina and Toronto last year for 3rd worst. They just don't have a good looking group of forwards, and most of the teams behind them (i.e. Buffalo, Toronto, Edmonton, New Jersey) seem to have more obvious improvements coming to their offense. Vancouver's the only other team that's been predicted. That and Torts can kill an offense like no other

I'm surprised at people picking Vancouver for dead last/fewest goals. Part of my frustration with them is that signings like Eriksson are gonna keep them out of the basement but nowhere near a playoff spot. Anton Rodin is cool, though.

EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay - Self-explanatory. This is really the only mortal lock I have for the Atlantic. 2. Florida - I think 2-4 on this list could shuffle around a bit. I don't have much to say about Florida other than that I think they'll be worse than Tampa but probably better than the rest of the division. 3. Boston - Defense is bad but Rask has a major bounce-back year, and they have an excellent group of forwards even after losing Eriksson. -------------------- 4. Montreal - Like I said, things could shuffle so I really just have them at 4 for now because I like the Bruins more. They pick up a wild card because the Metro eats itself alive. (WC) 5. Buffalo - Sabres are much improved despite kind of a lovely defense and goaltending. I think they miss a wild card spot but not by much. I could see any of the teams in spots 5-8 ending up in any of those spots. 6. Detroit - Old and trending downward. 7. Toronto - A lot of exciting young players, but it's not their time yet. Improving from 69 points to ~80 is a distinct step forward. 8. Ottawa - Garbage. Sorry, Karlsson. Metropolitan 1. Washington - Not much to say. Deep everywhere, the best goal scorer in the NHL, hard to pick against them 2. Pittsburgh - I don't really have much to say here either. 3. Philadelphia - Actually having a decent defense and goaltending for what seems like the first time in forever helps them secure a wild card spot more handily than last year when it was as the 8th seed. Would not surprise me if they had more points than the 3rd best team in the Atlantic. -------------------- 4. New York Rangers (WC) - I think Team 2nd Line Forward has a good season but barely makes it in. 5. New York Islanders - They lost a lot of depth this summer. The team is still good, but they struggle early and don't recover. 6. Carolina - I think they just barely miss the playoffs this year, like by 4 or 5 points. They've been trending up and they have a really well built team for the future, but I don't think they're quite there yet, and the goaltending is rear end. 7. New Jersey - Taylor Hall definitely helps but I don't see them ahead of any of the teams I have at 1-7. They might even be worse than Columbus. 8. Columbus - Not much to say here in the exact opposite way that I meant for Washington. They need a lot to go well for them to move up. It's weird since they seem decent on paper but, eh. WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Nashville - Monster defense. Solid forwards. Good goaltending. 2. Dallas - Monster offense, crap defense, crap goaltending. But that offense... 3. Chicago - I think they narrowly edge out Minnesota for this spot. Like with the Atlantic, I think there's some degree of interchangeability with 3-5 in this division. -------------------- 4. Minnesota (WC) - Bruce Boudreau is a great coach, it's a reasonably solid roster. 5. St. Louis (WC) - Shockingly, they nearly miss the playoffs after having 107 points last year. Shattenkirk gets traded during the season and David Backes turns out to have been the glue that held these guys together. 6. Colorado - With a new coach who isn't a moron, they make some strides forward, but still fall flat. 7. Winnipeg - I don't think they're bad necessarily, the division is just very tough. Pacific 1. San Jose - Cup finalists, solid roster. 2. Los Angeles - Another solid roster all-around but it's tough losing Lucic and Gaborik (temporarily) to start the season, they start slow but ultimately finish safely in the playoffs. 3. Calgary - This is the biggest jump for me, but they have a good team put together and an actual goaltender now. -------------------- 4. Anaheim - Randy at the helm takes the Ducks back a step and they miss the drat playoffs, and barely finish ahead of the Oilers 5. Edmonton - Connor McDavid proves he's the best player in the world but it's not enough to get them over the hump yet. 6. Arizona - This is actually a fall backwards in the standings for them, but I think they'll be better than that result seems. 7. Vancouver - Does anything really need to be said about this garbage fire of a team? STANLEY CUP FINALS: Tampa Bay def. Nashville - third time's the charm for Tampa WCF: Nashville def. You think McDavid will get the Hart with the Oilers missing the playoffs? I don't see that unless he blows away the competition points-wise, and there's too many good scorers on likely playoff teams (Kane, Sid, Seguin, etc) for me to think that will happen. Your Minny placement is interesting though. I have them missing the playoffs but I did just take a step back to think about it now that you reminded me Boudreau is their coach. I just still think their roster is questionable.

I think McDavid wins the scoring title by a solid 10-15 points and the media trips over their boners to anoint him as the new chosen one, ignoring the fact that they miss the playoffs Minnesota is getting older but it's still, in my opinion, a good roster and they have an excellent coach. They have a lot of interesting guys who are 24 and younger too (Dumba, Granlund, Neiderreiter, Coyle). It's definitely a weird team though, and when their older guys start to retire I think they're going to fall off a cliff. The younger players are promising but none seem like stars, just great complementary pieces to their has-been stars. In a way they remind me of the Rangers in that it's kind of a team of 2nd line forwards, but with a less talented goaltender. Jamwad Hilder fucked around with this message at 16:44 on Oct 4, 2016 |

Minnesota's a weird fuckin' team. They don't exactly suck at anything but they don't really excel anywhere either. They're pretty sound defensively, not the greatest offense but seem to hold up alright. They were smart to immediately jump on Boudreau and I could see them snagging the first WC pretty easily, but likely not go higher than that.

my only prediction is that the ottawa senators will waste another year of erik karlsson's career and finish middle of the pack, making just enough money to sustain eugene's life force indefinitely

EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay - Theyre going to bounce back, that roster is too young and good still 2. Florida - Have a good year, not the greatest, but the Atlantic is garbage so second place is easily attained 3. Boston - See above -------------------- 4. Detroit - Older, slower, Abdelkader 5. Buffalo - Getting there, slowly 6. Ottawa - Karlsson puts out another Norris caliber season but its wasted because Melnyk 7. Toronto - Forwards good, defense spotty, tending 8. Montreal - Price injures himself in the first game, speculation is he did it on purpose. Therrien. Metropolitan 1. Washington - Still good at pretty much everything, same as last year 2. NY Rangers - Made some good and bad moves, benefit from Lundqvist having his last best season 3. Pittsburgh - Cup hangover + injury bug keep them outside the top 3 most of the season followed by a late push -------------------- 4. Philly (WC1) - Made some good moves but still have some dead weight that prevents them from being truly competitive (spots 4-6 are going to be tight as hell here) 5. Carolina (WC2) - Steadily improving and shedding all the dumb contracts the had for some good prospects and youth 6. NY Islanders - Stepped back a bit over the summer, could struggle to get in if Capuano isnt fired 7. New Jersey - Still old and slow and bad at goals, but they are clearly moving away from that model. Still not a great year (sorry Schneids) 8. Columbus - The John Tortorella Effect WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Dallas - All the goals (for and against, Presidents winner) 2. Nashville - Probably the best D in the league now and have actual scoring lines to boot, we get old good Rinne this year 3. St.Louis - Relying heavily on some young guys to step up, may or may not happen -------------------- 4. Chicago (WC1) - Getting older and changes happening less frequently in a division that keeps getting better 5. Winnipeg (WC2) - Pavelec out, Hellebyuck in, tons of good young players make up for a very shallow D 6. Minnesota - Not good at anything, but not bad at anything, Boudreau uses this season to tinker with things and figure out who needs to stay or go 7. Colorado - I feel bad putting them here even though they got better, the Central is loving brutal Pacific 1. San Jose - Basically the same team as last year, still very good 2. Los Angeles - I hate them, but they will bore their way to second in the division 3. Arizona - competent management, good coaching, and a surprisingly good year form their rookies shoots them up the shittiest division -------------------- 4. Anaheim - barely miss the playoffs, but do so because Carlyle 5. Calgary - Hard to gauge, could replace Arizona as the 3 seed if goaltending works out 6. Edmonton - McDavid cant plug all the holes in this ship, but does a good enough job to keep them from the bottom 7. Vancouver - Sedins demand a trade and Im so sorry Canucks fans STANLEY CUP FINALS: Florida def. Nashville WCF: Nashville def. Los Angeles ECF: Florida def. So I'll prefix my lovely predictions by saying that on average 5 teams that failed to make the playoffs last season make it the next season, so that's what I tried basing my predictions on. EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay - They are very, very, very good. 2. Florida - Mostly young team that's still improving. 3. Montreal - Carey Price is gonna save Therrien's job, yo. -------------------- 4. Boston (WC2) - Marchand continues to be good, Rask has a better season and they edge out the Flyers for the final WC spot. 5. Detroit - Their playoff streak comes to an end as the era of playoffless mediocrity begins. 6. Toronto - A better and younger roster that, while it still sucks, will manage to avoid finishing last. 7. Ottawa - Erik Karlsson can only do so much for this team. 8. Buffalo - They take a step back in their rebuilding efforts this season. Metropolitan 1. Pittsburgh (President's Trophy winners) - Hard to bet against them when everything's gone right for them since they fired Mike Johnston and hired Mike Sullivan. 2. Washington - If it wasn't for Pittsburgh, they'd probably win the President's Trophy again. 3. NY Islanders - Tavares continues to drag this team into the playoffs despite Capuano not being the sharpest coach out there. -------------------- 4. New Jersey (WC1) - Hall ends up being the offensive catalyst for their playoff return. 5. Philadelphia - Not sold on them being a playoff team again this season. Maybe next season? 6. NY Rangers - Poor Lundqvist, taken down by the anchors called Dan Girardi and Marc Staal. 7. Carolina - They're on the up and up, problem is their goaltending consists of Eddie Lack and Cam loving Ward. 8. Columbus - Grit only takes you so far. WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Nashville (#1 team in the West) - They're an improved team and Pekka Rinne bouncing back after a below-average season will help them beat out the rest of the Central. 2. St. Louis - They're still a good team even if they lost some players. 3. Minnesota - Boudreau's regular season magic continues to work, this time on the Wild -------------------- 4. Chicago (WC1) - Kane and Panarin don't have as good of a season as teams manage to shut them down, but Crawford ends up dragging the team into a WC spot. 5. Colorado (WC2) - De-Roy-ifying the team ends up leading to a playoff birth. 6. Dallas - Offense ends up not being as good this season, goaltending implodes and Jim Nill can't fix it because nobody wants to take Lehtonen or Niemi back. 7. Winnipeg - Still a young team that's growing, but with no Trouba, their defense suddenly looks very suspect. Plus Pavelec is still a Jet. Pacific 1. San Jose - Easily the best out of a bad division, slight edge to them over LA 2. Los Angeles - Easily the 2nd best out of a bad division 3. Arizona - My rationale for this basically comes down to "They're not a Pacific Canadian team" (which all suck) and "Need some team to get lucky and make the playoffs" -------------------- 4. Anaheim - Carlyle manages to drag the team from 1st in the Pacific 4 years in a row to out of a playoff spot. 5. Calgary - Not sold on Elliott as a starter, plus Gulutzen, although an upgrade on Hartley, still sucks. 6. Vancouver - It's okay, Jim Benning made the playoffs in NHL 17 with the Canucks, so he knows they're still a good team. 7. Edmonton - Even McDavid can't save us. EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay - The onlt elite team in an otherwise underwhemlimg as hell division 2. Florida - Good young talent that's only getting better 3. Detroit - Mrazek and their scoring will drag them kicking and screaming into the playoffs. Kinda like the 2013-14 Flyers, really. -------------------- 4. Montreal - Assuming Price can stay healthy, they could contend for that #3 spot. Trading Subban for Weber hurts, though. 5. Boston - Somehow they manage to say in it every year, but that defence is pretty bad. 6. Buffalo - Decent core of young talent but they desperately need scoring and goaltending. 7. Toronto - Showed promise at the end of last year, but still a few years from playoff contention. 8. Ottawa - Erik Karlsson and a bunch of trash. Metropolitan 1. Pittsburgh - The roster is virtually the same as last year and now they get a full of Matt Murray. gently caress. 2. Washington - Holtby regresses back to slightly less gaudy numbers, but they're still a really good team. 3. Philadelphia - Hakstol's system is in place, Provorov makes the blue line better, and they have a fantastic goalie tandem. -------------------- 4. NY Rangers (WC1) - Hank is amazing, but the rest of the roster is amazingly average 5. NY Islanders (WC2) - They're too inconsistent and really haven't built around Tavares as much as they should. 6. Carolina - Very easily could sneak in to a wild card spot, but Cam Ward will probably gently caress it up. 7. Columbus - Bob's healthy and their D looks solid, but they're still really lacking in centre depth. 8. New Jersey - Got away with robbery in the Hall/Larsson trade, but still needs more scoring. WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Nashville - As odd as it sounds, the weak link here might be Pekka Rinne. Thankfully their already great D got even better with Subban. 2. Chicago - Still waiting for that cap crunch to affect them. 3. St. Louis - This is probably their last good shot at the Cup, since I'm guessing Shattenkirk's gone after this season. -------------------- 4. Dallas (WC1) - Their garbage goaltending holds them back, but not enough to miss the playoffs. 5. Winnipeg (WC2) - Hellebuyck gets the starting job by X-mas. 6. Minnesota - Boudreau's system will take a bit to catch on, and this roster isn't getting any younger. 7. Colorado - They should be better with Roy gone, but the rest of the division is a lot better. Pacific 1. San Jose - Martin Jones established himself as a legit #1, and the offence is still scary good. 2. Los Angeles - Same ol' boring Kings. 3. Calgary - All they were missing was goaltending, and lookit that they just got Brian Elliott. -------------------- 4. Anaheim - Randy Carlyle 5. Edmonton - That defence is still a loving dumpster fire, but a healthy McDavid all season should make them competitive 6. Arizona - Uh.........see.................uh.....................yes. 7. Vancouver - Jim Benning, ladies and gentlemen. STANLEY CUP FINALS: Nashville def. Tampa Bay WCF: Nashville def. Los Angeles ECF: Tampa Bay def. I am confused about the need of the '1st' player chosen by the Las Vegas team in an expansion draft. It isn't really much of a 'draft' in the sense that pick order matters because they aren't drafting against other teams. Wouldn't they just submit an alphabetical list of all the people they want that were unprotected? So they might select MAF first and Tanner Glass last, but it doesn't matter because it isn't like they have to pick MAF first to keep another team from taking him.

OK the first chosen player's name to come out of the mouth of ~*The Creator*~ if you want to be pedantic about it!

Normally in expansion there's more than one new team coming in so it does matter but yeah in this case I guess not.

The old expansion rules were that they had to pick goaltenders first, then defensemen, then forwards. I don't think that's the case this time? They'll probably announce the highest profile guy first.

EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay- Still scary good. 2. Florida- Lots of potential, combined with a division that's lacking therein. 3. Boston- I feel like either Boston gets in or... -------------------- 4. Detroit- ...finds a way to keep their streak alive, thus keeping Holland and company employed another year despite a first-round exit. 5. Ottawa- I've got nothing. 6. Montreal- The political dispatching of Subban to Nashville, plus HAS' visible frustration, does not bode well. 7. Buffalo- Yes, the Sabres...ah...um...yes. 8. Toronto- I don't know, man. It's the two Florida teams and then a logjam of "I have no idea" winding up in Toronto. Metropolitan 1. Washington- Too good. 2. Pittsburgh- Will cool off a little, but still be very good. 3. NY Rangers- Henrik Lundqvist. -------------------- 4. Philadelphia (WC)- I think they can piece together another run to the playoffs. The race for the bubble will be between they and the: 5. NY Islanders (WC)- Who I'm not really sure on. 6. Columbus- Healthy , potential for four or more 20+ goal scorers, and improved defense makes Columbus better than most people think, and people are disappointed Tortorella isn't a complete, unabashed failure. Not sure it gets them higher than I've given them credit for, though, and it'll probably be another season in the purgatory between the playoffs and a good pick. 7. New Jersey- Hall will help, but they don't strike me as improved beyond that. 8. Carolina- Did they do anything other than extend Ward for some reason? Washington wins another Metro crown only to suffer a heartbreaking elimination somewhere in the playoffs. Probably to Pittsburgh. Or the Rangers. Actually, yeah, it'll be the Rags because it's mandatory that they have a series each year. WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Chicago- It's the Hawks 2. Nashville- Still probably good. Rinne might be a liability, though. 3. St. Louis- One for the Hitch. -------------------- 4. Dallas (WC)- Stars are going to do what they did and what I think Columbus was hoping to last season- score all the goals and hope the other team doesn't exploit the questionable defense to score more goals and make the playoffs. 5. Minnesota (WC)- Then the Wild get in, I guess? 6. Winnipeg- I don't know anything about them other than Trouba Trouble. 7. Colorado- Good luck, Jared Bednar. Thanks for the Calder Cup. Pacific 1. San Jose- A good team, both literally and emotionally. 2. Los Angeles- gently caress The King. Still solid, though. 3. Anaheim- In spite of Randy Carlyle, Anaheim gets in because of the other teams in the division. -------------------- 4. Calgary- I forgot about Brian Elliott. Maybe that helps them. 5. EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic 1. Tampa Bay - they do really have no weaknesses 2. Florida - they improved a lot on a back end and their young core rules 3. Boston - still think Julien, Rask, and the offense will be good enough -------------------- 4. Montreal (WC) - they'll have enough with Price healthy 5. Detroit - every year I hear the doom and gloom from fans; they'll miss the playoffs this year but it won't be a disaster year like everyone thinks 6. Ottawa - they'll have a good offense again and it'll be enough to push them ahead of the bottom 2 7. Toronto - they will be competitive and will have a good first half but can't see them getting too close to the playoffs; wouldn't be shocked to see them ahead of Ottawa and Detroit, though 8. Buffalo - they won't be much better and have a lot of work to do Metropolitan 1. Pittsburgh - depends on Crosby's brains a little, but they will be very formidable again 2. Washington - they could be first again, but they're definitely the top two teams with the Pens; after these two it gets really hard 3. NY Rangers - they'll probably make a trade to improve the defense, but Hank and the depth at forward will put them about where they were last year -------------------- 4. Philadelphia (WC) - love the changes they've made since Holmgren and Voracek is gonna bounce back 5. NY Islanders - Capuano might get fired this year; they're supposed to take another step but the youth needs to be nurtured better; they'll score a lot of goals but be inconsistent, much like last year, leading to significant chances next season 6. New Jersey - Schneider, being faster, and the extra 30 goals from Hall will make them basically as competitive as they were last year, but that defense is going to prevent them from making a real push 7. Carolina - in a year or two, they're going to be much better; they have a seriously underrated core of prospects and young players, but the goaltending and lack of offense is still a big concern 8. Columbus - things could go pretty well for them if their kids step up, but Tortorella is a piece of poo poo and they're gonna go through some growing pains WESTERN CONFERENCE Central 1. Nashville - they're going to win the President's Trophy this year, especially if Rinne bounces back 2. Chicago - the usual 3. Dallas - the usual; after these 3 it gets tough -------------------- 4. Minnesota (WC) - their roster will be elevated by Bruce 5. St. Louis (WC) - they're on the decline a bit but their roster is still very good 6. Colorado - they are going to score a lot of goals and have a better season; could be a surprise playoff team 7. Winnipeg - they are gonna rule in 3 years but right now they're gonna have a difficult time Pacific 1. San Jose - they have unfinished business 2. Los Angeles - still very good 3. Calgary - they get back in just because they now have an average goaltender -------------------- 4. Anaheim - Carlyle is garbage but their roster is too good to fall terribly; could easily make the playoffs 5. Arizona - their kids look amazing but they have a year or two to go 6. Vancouver - it's them and Edmonton in a race for the bottom 7. Edmonton - McDavid alone is going to win them games but the roster is still a dumpster fire, especially without Hall STANLEY CUP FINALS: Nashville def. Philadelphia (!) WCF: Nashville def.
