Trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL8Rl2n2C6Y

Frequency is a new show on the CW from Jeremy Carver (Supernatural, Being Human). Adapted from the 2000 Gregory Hoblit film starring America's second-favorite firefighting actor Dennis Quaid, and second favorite actor who has played both Jesus Christ and a remorseless murderer in a Sci-Fi story Jim Caviezel.

Synopsis: In 2016, NYPD Detective Raimy Sullivan (Peyton List) discovers that she is able to speak with her deceased father Frank (Riley Smith). Her attempts to save his life trigger the "butterfly effect", changing the present in unforeseen ways. To fix the damage, she must work with her father across time to solve a decades-old murder case.

The Cast:

Raimy Sullivan: An NYPD detective who experiences an unusual weather phenomenon that allows her to communicate with her late father through radio transmissions. Portrayed by Peyton List

Frank Sullivan: Raimy's father and an NYPD detective in 1996. He was killed while working undercover, but was saved when Raimy warned him the night before. Portrayed by Riley Smith.

Satch Rayna: Frank's former partner who now runs the precinct Raimy works for. Portrayed by Mekhi Phifer.

Stan Marano: The deputy chief of police who was responsible for the undercover operation that resulted in Frank's death. Portrayed by Anthony Ruivivar.

Gordo: Raimy's childhood friend. Portrayed by Lenny Jacobson.

Julie Sullivan: Raimy's mother and Frank's widow who disappears as a consequence of the butterfly effect. Portrayed by Devin Kelley.

Daniel Lawrence: Raimy's fiancee in 2016. Portrayed by Daniel Bonjour.

Airtime:
WEDNESDAYS on the CW at 9 PM, starting on October 5th.

The movie is one of those underrated movies that came out to very little fanfare and most people forgot it, but it's awesome, and everyone loves it when they finally watch it. I don't know how interested I'd be in this show if not for enjoying the hell out of the movie, but I felt the same way about Limitless -- loved the movie, and the show turned out to be a pleasant surprise too.

Also, Peyton List was good in her few appearances on The Flash as Lisa Snart, the Golden Glider.

Agreed, Frequency is unashamedly one of my favorite movies. It's really well done. A weeeee bit skeptical of it translating to series but hey, it can't be worse than the Flash's time traveling.

Love the movie and I enjoyed this. Even if it was a bit silly that she explicitly says that she remembers everything yet somehow forgets that her mom has been missing for 20 years

The way I took the timeline to work in the show is that the two eras (1996 and 2016) are occurring concurrently. So since her mom hadn't yet disappeared in the 1996 timeline, she couldn't remember it happening yet.

I really love the movie, and this was a pretty good watch. I definitely bought into the father/daughter relationship.

I guess I kinda get that...but then the question is, where does the history that she DOES remember come from? Something has to happen in those 20 years, and her mom disappearing seems to be a direct result of her changing the past, which is what also causes all her new memories to appear. Eh...maybe I shouldn't think about it too hard.

It seemed like the rules are something like this:
1) She can remember all of the original timeline
2) She can remember things as they "happen" concurrently, exactly 20 years ago
3) She can remember things when people in the current, changed timeline mention them, like her dad dying in the car crash or her mom being murdered by the nightingale killer

Nobody move and nobody gets hurt.

It's tricky, because she definitely had a bunch of memories of her father being there for moments in her life that wouldn't have happened yet. I suppose you could argue that she didn't gain any new memories of her mom and just wrote it off as them not having come back yet, and the bad thing that happened twenty years ago only came back when someone explicitly reminded her of it which is reasonable given the nature of memory and the fact that she hadn't really been living with it the whole time.

I can help
I really liked the movie; I still rewatch it every couple of years or so.

And this seems ok so far. I mean it's their main gimmick to change the past a lot, and there certainly are going to be some problems with the multiple timelines and eg how conveniently some radio talks and subsequet actions change the past and others don't.... But at least they have some ground rules. Mainly, that the radio needs to keep working and that they can't reset past the point where Frank is at; only Frank's future.

Given that this is a tv show, I wonder what their plan is to keep things interesting for a full season (and even across seasons).

The Frequency movie had one of my favorite "changes the past moment". Right when his dad goes the other way and lives, the adult son suddenly has conflicting memories and 20 years of new memories hit him at the same time. I tried to find out on YouTube but no luck.

"I... I did well, didn't I?"
Of the like 4 time travel shows that I'm watching, I like the way this one handles the time travel the best. I think she should tell/show Gordo about the radio, not that that would really help in any way. It would be very helpful for Frank to tell/show his partner about the radio, but they won't do that because it would make crime solving waaaay easier... at the cost of instantaneously tearing the time stream to pieces.

If anyone is gonna learn about the radio, it seems to me it's gonna be the best friend who hasn't done anything of note. And I didn't think the fiancee was going to be important based on the pilot but I'm interested in how that plays out now. They should have made it so that he was also the same character as the new fiancee of Lucy from Timeless, who's currently in the opposite situation as Raimy with both her mom and her love life.

Well, clearly this season's arc is "catch the killer before he murders Mom" but who knows what they could use as a later season hook, probably that changing that event causes something else catastrophic to happen?
The only thing I don't think would happen would be that changing any events causes anything to happen to Raimy, since that would cripple the concept of the show.

You say that like having a one-off episode where Raimy accidentally swaps gender is a bad thing.

(I get that's not possible given the constraints, but they could give her a younger sibling).

I think the gist of this season is that her obsession to save her parents is destroying her relationships with them and everyone else. In the end she might succeed but end up alone. Or she might fail and realize that she should have filled the time with good memories.

Also, something hinky is up with that best friend neighbor dude. He's just always around and he was the one who put up the antenna, fixed the radio, and put all this into motion.

I actually did just think of a season hook idea -after solving the mystery and saving her parents, she gets a transmission from 20 years in the future from someone who's trying to save her from being murdered.

The CW sold the international rites to Netflix, so there's a good chance of a second season.

Solid. Maybe not twenty years, since that might require a lot more sci-fi than the show might be willing to go into, but from two or three? That'd be loving perfect.

This show continues to--unexpectedly--be really good. I think it's at the top of my list for the time travel shows this season.

If they're gonna have messages from the future they should have message that are being relayed from and back to the future in increments of 20 years at a time like a game of telephone.
