Are the twins one or two people? Do they count as one or two for the target headcount of 8? Is Magicaloid a transformed human? And why was Ruler's death so bloody? She was shot by something, from where? Why not a stroke like Nemu, or was it perhaps Mary striking first?

I honestly though they were going to do the stupid cliche "MC gets robbed, best friend sacrifices herself to save her," but I'm really glad they didn't. I probably would have dropped this show if they did. Seeing Ruler's name pop up was just so drat satisfying. I don't really sympathize for her either seeing as she seems to think she's about 10 times better than everyone at everything and her first thought when hearing that you can share candies was "Well time to go commit murder, then!" Also I knew the second that I heard that there was a Magical Girl named "Calamity Mary" that she would be my favorite character, and she still has yet to disappoint.

i liked how this ep portrayed ruler as a pretty lovely leader when you think about it. she's completely entitled about her status: she calls herself a leader, and simply expects to be followed. and she specifically picks out weaklings and idiots to lead, no one who displays actual initiative or fortitude. well, except swim swim, who will either be completely passive or utterly ruthless. the ex-ruler team are in a weird spot, everyone will be extremely wary of them because no one likes backstabbers, but they also lack the offensive power to really be a threat top speed and sister nana are natural leaders, someone who can actually stand with their peers, not just minions

Yeah Machiavelli 101 is to cripple the backstabbers asap because they'll just backstab you as soon as they feel like it. Ruler's problem is its preferable to rule by fear than to be love, but you gotta avoid being hated while doing so. People don't mind fearing you if you're also competent and can bring home the goods.

I did not see that coming at all but it was more than adequately foreshadowed. Actually looking back it was practically beating the audience over the head with it with Nemurin's comments during Swim Swim's dream. Ruler said a lot of things to Swim Swim but nothing that actually goes against what happened in this episode, it was always "listen to me" or "be like me." Phobophilia posted:you realize that letterboxing the screen is a classic signifier of "flashback"? I didn't even notice the letterboxing myself but it was very obviously a flashback. Even if you didn't pick up on it immediately it became obvious once Mary called Ruler a newbie and then the subsequent scenes played.

I sort of tricked myself by describing Swim Swim as "loyal to Ruler" in the spreadsheet I was using to keep track of all the characters. (Surprisingly, I'm not sure I needed the spreadsheet. It helps that the magical girl forms have distinctive names and designs and only a single special power, and their human appearances and names are rarely relevant.)

Episode 5 is up. I guess Cranberry is the main villain now. I'm not totally clear on what her power is, but I assume that's deliberate. I'm not totally clear on Sister Nana's motivations either. Her eyecatch calls her a "philanthropist," but the next eyecatch mentions Weiss "seeing through her aims." Though maybe that just refers to Weiss realizing that Nana is in love with her? Nana always seems to be overacting, but maybe she's just a very emotional and somewhat naive person? It would be interesting if Magicaloid got a gadget that let her trace cell phones one day. Fav would probably be toast if that happened. Silver2195 fucked around with this message at 18:11 on Oct 29, 2016 |

Seems pretty clear Nana and Weiss are already an item, I doubt that's her "aim". Maybe the fact that Nana felt she couldn't be with someone who couldn't protect her, which seems like a weird hangup for someone with superpowers. Hardgore Alice is my new favorite name.

Magicaloid 44 is a straight-up con artist. She uses her amazing magical powers to swindle other magical girls. I took a liking to her because of her character design, but after seeing her in this episode, she's my favorite character. Her backstory and Cranberry and Weiss' fight made for a great episode. So, now it's clear that Cranberry and Fav are working together at the expense of the other girls. It looks like the only thing Cranberry wants is a worthy opponent to fight, so maybe this whole setup is her reward for winning the bloodbath at the start of the first episode. We don't know what that little bastard Fav is getting out of this, though. The Peaky Angels can't win in a fight, so they're resorting to cyberbullying to win. It's going to be interesting to see how one reacts if (when) the other dies. As far as Nana's true intentions are, it probably has something to do with that group photo she and Weiss have in their apartment, and whatever happened to the people in it. Can we just replace this whole show with "The Adventures of Calamity Mary and her Robot Friend?" They seem to make every scene roughly 70% better.

oh cool, nana and winterprison's deal isnt a rehash of la pucelle's schtick, they're straight up gay married and lmao that calamity mary can grind points by helping one side or the other in a yakuza gang war. also lmao at magicaloid accidentally helping out nana, who actually is gullible as hell. i think this show has really found its footing by making a bunch of weirdos bounce off one another

With La Pucelle and presumably Magicaloid down, who else will die? I guess both Cranberry and Calamity Mary will have to go down at some point for a somewhat happy ending, because they're the only outright villainous Magical Girls left (the Peaky Angels aren't very nice, but after all 8 required deaths occur they'll probably won't try to kill anyone again). Then again, the Peaky Angels don't have good chances either because they're fairly incompetent. Hardgore Alice will probably be Snow White's main ally now, but neither her power nor Snow White's seems very useful against Cranberry, so they'll need some help from the other Magical Girls as well. We also finally get a clear sense of Fav's motivations; he's pretty much doing this for his own and Cranberry's amusement (and has done similar things before, but with somewhat different rules), although there's some vague suggestion that he needs strong survivors to accomplish some other task.

poo poo, my favorite character! RIP Magicaloid 44, unless she lied and bought that Rabbit's Foot like I'm desperately hoping she did. It's tragicomic that Magicaloid was a middle-school dropout and runaway who not only didn't want to be a magical girl in the first place, but also didn't even get to choose what she would look like. She was a victim of circumstances from beginning to end. I am just blown away by how quickly things escalated this episode, not just in violence but in cruelty towards the characters and the viewer. The whole buying system for items was cold hearted enough, but that fight was just plain heartless. For a moment, it really did look like La Pucelle was going to win that fight, and then they just callously yank that hope away from you and dash it on the side of the road. Swim Swim's building up to something big, and I'm really looking forward to it catching everyone off-guard. Ripple and Top Speed are still doing community service while everyone else is spilling each others' blood like they were in a Verhoeven movie.

That was a really good episode. I think it's good that this show has really managed to go beyond what a lot of people, myself included to an extent, thought it would be at first glance. I'm also kind of surprised how okay I was with La Pucelle dying. In the end, it was her stupid hubris, her stupid code of honor, and her stupid, stupid, pointless death.

I think its interesting in how quickly La Pucelle and Snow White both kind of lost their cool and their dignity once they realize that death was a very real possibility. Though La Pucelle had one last moment of trying to go out guns blazing, Snow White I thought would try to crawl behind those wooden boards.

They were both normal, well adjusted middle schoolers, which seems to actually be pretty rare amongst magical girls. They're both trying to live their ideals, which are based on childrens' magical girl shows with no deaths or moral grey areas. Koyuki didn't even doubt the accident story when magical girls can stop cars with their bare hands.
