What makes a game an airdasher?
Airdasher or 'anime' fighting games are games that, unlike your more traditional fighting games (Street Fighter, King of Fighters, etc), are defined more by their aggressive, fast-paced gameplay and abundance of system mechanics. Where a game like Street Fighter might reward smart ground spacing and use of normals, a game like Guilty Gear is more about overwhelming offense from all angles, with many more characters defined by long blockstrings and oppressive wakeup games. More universal fighting game information can be found in Brosnan's excellent Fighting Game Thread

So what's the point of this thread?
This thread is meant to be more of a centralized thread for the discussion of any and all airdashers old and new, and to organize matches between goons. There's a fair amount of crossover between players of various airdasher games, due to similar mechanics often carrying over between games, and a larger main thread is better than several low-activity individual game threads.

Similar Mechanics?
Many airdashers have a number of system mechanics that are incredibly similar or identical, due in large part to the fact that Guilty Gear was the basis for the airdasher genre. A few of the most notable mechanics that you'll see are:

-Airdashing: The namesake of the genre, airdashes often exist alongside ground dashes to facilitate speedy approaches (or escapes) even while in the air, offering more opportunities for movement instead of just being locked into a jump arc.
-Double jumps: Just as the name says, a second midair jump to help further control air movement, but often a double jump cannot be performed after an airdash, or vice versa.
-Faultless Defense/Barrier Blocking: A means of defense, usually tied to a resource such as a meter, to negate chip damage from blocking or to block moves in the air that cannot normally be defended against. However, it will often increase the length of blockstun in exchange, as well as push the enemy further away after their attacks than a normal block would, making it ideal for escaping a tight situation.
-Instant Blocking: As opposed to the safer defense of the previous, instant blocking is a much more risky mechanic, done by inputting a block mere frames before an attack would connect, but in exchange often receiving less blockstun, gaining some meter, and leaving the enemy closer than a normal block would, leaving them open for a punish.
-Bursts: To counter the often oppressive offense that airdashers have, many games have a combo breaking 'burst' mechanic to restore a disadvantageous situation back to neutral. However, these can often be blocked, and if punished, can be devastating both in and out of a game. Some games even have the option to expend burst resources for improved offense instead.
-Roman/Rapid Cancels: A system mechanic that allows a player to burn a resource to instantly cancel any recovery from a move and return immediately to a neutral state, allowing for additional combo followups, pressure, or simply to keep from being punished for making a mistake.
-Negative Penalty: A system mechanic built to punish players for being too passive in a match, such as fleeing with no attempt to cover the retreat or blocking too long without trying to escape, resulting in losing meter, or taking extra damage for a time.
-Clashing: In many airdashers, if two attack hitboxes intersect without any character's hurtbox overlapping, a clash will happen, at which point just about any other move can be used, even if the move that clashed could not normally be cancelled into anything. They can also be strung together to make some very flashy sequences.
-Notation: While not a mechanic as such, airdasher notation is rather odd, owing to the genre's penchant for longer, more intricate combos than more traditional fighting games. As such, numerical or 'numpad' notation is used, called that because it uses numbers like the numpad on your computer to indicate directions. Assuming your character is facing right:

Therefore, blocking would be done by holding the stick back at 4, a command normal done by holding forward and A would be 6A, or a DP would be 623. A combo example would be 5B > 6A > j.C > j.2D >> 623D.

So what games are we talking about here?
Generally, so long as it can be classified as an airdasher, it's free to talk about. There is an absolute glut of little-known fan-made or independent airdashers out there, so listing everything would be drat near impossible. That said, if your favorite game isn't listed and you want to give it the justice it deserves, hit me up and I'll add your blurb.

For those just getting into airdashers, however, I'll provide a quick summary of some of the more popular games and their unique mechanics and features:


BlazBlue: Central Fiction - PS3/PS4
The fourth entry (but sixth retail game) of the BlazBlue franchise, following - and concluding? - the adventures of magical murderhobo Ragna The Bloodedge and the soap opera of suffering and drama that is his life. Now with 100% less English voices. Releases in Japan on October 6th, North America on November 1st, and November 4th for the EU.

Features
-A four-button fighter, with three designated attacks for light (A)/medium (B)/heavy (C) and a unique 'Drive' button (D) that has special effects for each character. Ragna can absorb health, Jin can freeze his opponent, Tsubaki can charge a meter she can later expend to power up her specials, and so on.
-A wide range of single player content perfect for more casual players to enjoy, including tutorials, challenges, and an extensive 'Abyss' mode to level characters, gain abilities, and fight special opponents.
-A gigantic and complex 'visual novel' style story mode - with occasional dramatic fights you can play - with hours upon hours hours of fully voiced content, although English voices have been canned due to budget concerns.

New mechanics and characters
-Active Flow: A special mode automatically activated by maintaining offensive momentum that grants various advantages such as recovering burst meter and a general damage buff, but is limited to once per round.
-Overdrive: A special mode that can be activated instead of a burst which powers up a character's unique Drive moves and specials, and grants access to the character's Exceed Accel, a unique super that automatically ends the Overdrive but costs no other resources. Exceed Accel also gains a great deal of damage during Active Flow.

-Hibiki Kohaku: A high speed, tricky assassin character who can preform tricky teleport mixups with his Drive.
-Naoto Kurogane: A straightforward, close quarters brawler character whose Drive allows him to perform chargeable, long range attacks that can break guards and be cancelled with a dash for huge damage
-Nine the Phantom: A magical character who can combine elements from her normals to cast a huge number of spells with varying effects to do damage or lock down the opponent.
-Hades Izanami: Ragna and Jin's sister, possessed by some evil god thing. Has no double jump, but can instead float for a period of time, giving her access to her ground normals in the air, and allowing for fancy float-unfloat mixups. Her Drive is a stance which allows her to use her D normals/specials without her having to do any activation animation in exchange for being completely unable to block.
-Es: A new character for the console release, Es fights with a huge sword and can place 'crests', to be activated later to continue combos or for extended pressure strings and frametraps on opponents.
-Mai Natsume: Another console exclusive character, Mai can charge and throw her spear to break guards and redirect it back towards the opponent if she misses. Instead of having command normals like other characters, she can whiff cancel her normals and different combinations of normals can result in different moves becoming available.
-Whatever the gently caress this is.: (Spoilers, if you're concerned about that sort of thing.)


Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator- - PS3/PS4
The grandfather of all airdashers, done up in a new beautiful 3D artstyle that keeps the artistic spirit of its 2D roots alive by using special animation techniques to mimic its predecessors. Follows the immortal humanoid weapon Sol Badguy as he sets out to punch an old friend in the face. And maybe save the world, who knows?

Features
-A five-button fighter, with Punch, Kick, Slash, and Heavy Slash being the character's main attacks, and a special Dust button for universal overheads and sweeps.
-An incredible tutorial, quite possibly the best one ever attached to a fighting game, that teaches not only basic fighting game information, but also incredibly detailed information like button priority option selects or individual character matchup knowledge.
-A fair amount of single player content, such as MOM Mode, which allows players to level up and give new skills and abilities to their characters.
-A couple hour long movie-style story mode with no actual player involvement in fights, as well as a large encyclopedia to help new players get a handle on the game world. Also has had its english voices trimmed from -Sign- for budget reasons.

New mechanics and characters
-Charged Blitz: Blitz Shield can now be held to deflect attacks for a longer time, and if held to max, will unleash an attack that will crumple the opponent.

-Kum Haehyun: A young girl known as a 'Tuner' wearing a giant old man robot suit. Can charge and alter her specials, and redirect her fireballs mid-flight.
-Raven: An immortal man who, in his years of being unable to die, has turned into a masochist in his attempts to die. Can enter a special super armor stance that allows him to build up a special meter based on hits he takes which can alter his specials and supers, in addition to giving him a general damage buff for the rest of the round.
-Dizzy: Finally returning from XX, Dizzy plays much like she previously did, with the ability to summon projectiles and perform tricky mixups and pressure intact.


Persona 4 Arena: Ultimax - PS3
The sequel to Persona 4 Arena, continuing off the plot of the smash hit JRPG Persona 4, as the scooby gang continues to poke their heads around and mess with gods, monsters, and previous game cast members.

Features
-An (ostensibly) simplified four button core system - two buttons for light/heavy normal attacks and two for persona attacks for most characters - with characters having universal reversal options, sweeps, and overheads all mapped to the same button combinations, as well as generally simplified inputs, mainly consisting of quarter circles.
-Various single-player modes such as Golden Arena, which allow building of social links with a navigator and strengthening of your chosen playable character.
-A huge multi-layered visual novel style story mode with a bit more fighting than in other games' story mode, branching off from the plots of Persona 3 and 4.

New Mechanics
-Shadow Mode: Most characters now have a 'Shadow' mode which, in exchange for removing the burst command and doing less damage overall, they gain the ability to enter a Shadow Rage, which gives them infinite meter for a time, and can carry their meter over between rounds.


Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R - PS3, Xbox 360, Playstation Vita, PC
God's gift to mankind and the physical manifestation of his will:commissar:Old outdated shitgarbage that hosed up everything:commissar: The final 2D sprite-based installment of the Guilty Gear games, +R is a rather controversial and refined version of the Accent Core series, with all the pros and cons that brings based on personal taste regarding the cast and its system mechanics.

While lacking certain flashier bells and whistles introduced in newer fighters like huge story modes or encompassing tutorials, the core mechanics of +R are polished to a mirror sheen, and its speed and aggressive pace are second to none.

Differences from Xrd
-Instead of a Yellow Roman Cancel, there is the Force Roman Cancel system, or FRCs, which can be performed during a certain frame window on certain attacks for 25% meter. Where in Xrd, all Roman Cancels are red when the opponent is in hitstun, blockstun, or knocked down, FRCs allow combos and pressure strings to continue while still preserving 25% meter cancel options
-No slowdown or superflash on Roman Cancels of any type.
-Force Breaks, special powerful 25% meter options are available for all characters. Often a more powerful version of a special move the character already has with added effects, some characters have unique Force Breaks that offer tools unavailable through any other means.
-Slashbacks, a high risk, high reward defensive option is available, which allows a player to attempt to effectively 'parry' an attack to gain huge frame advantage and meter bonus, but if mistimed, only another Slashback can be performed for a short period, as you will be unable to block for a brief time.


Melty Blood: Actress Again: Current Code - PC
The grand old poverty game, Melty Blood is a game with a legacy. Co-developed by independent circles French Bread and Type-Moon, it began as just a small game sold at Japan's Comiket, but despite starting out rocky, the game absolutely blew up beyond anyone's expectations. Eventually making its way to arcades and even home consoles, with various different word salad subtitles like ReAct Final Tuned or Act Cadenza.

Actress Again: Current Code however, until very recently, could only be legally acquired by means of purchasing an obscenely expensive Japanese only limited release blu-ray of the Type-Moon Carnival Phantasm anime, currently going for about 300 dollars or more, and launched with absolutely abysmal netcode, until CCCaster was developed to give it GGPO netplay. This gives Melty easily the best netcode available, albeit with some work having to be put into it. However, with the recent full international release of the game on Steam, legal troubles and technical issues are no longer a problem, although now it has weaker netcode (though better than what it had in its original release), and is closer to the arcade version, making it the tournament standard. But never fear, there are even plans to bring GGPO netplay to the port, making it about as perfect as it could be.

Features
-Extremely fast paced, high flying action, by means of its core system allowing for things like extremely low to the ground instant air dashes and tricky crossup potential for most of the cast.
-Extensive and incredibly deep system mechanics that would more than double the length of this post alone if each one were gone into depth. Thankfully there's a good explanation of the core systems and the basics for many characters at the game's Mizuumi Wiki page.
-Gigantic roster of characters thanks to the Moon system, which provides three distinct styles of play for every character, changing not only core system mechanics but also normals and specials, often giving the same character wildly different playstyles depending on the Moon picked.



-Additional Resources-
Dustloop: An almost all-encompassing collection of forums and wiki pages for most popular games such as Guilty Gear and BlazBlue.
Mizuumi Wiki: If Dustloop doesn't have it, Mizuumi probably does, although it sometimes suffers from abandoned pages due to the lower playerbase of some games.

UNIEL is a game by the makers of Melty Blood, and is a spiritual sequel to that game in many ways, particularly the garish misappropriation of english words. That said, while Melty Blood is a game that rewards wild air combat and reckless aggression, UNIEL is a game that rewards solid defense, smart decision making, and taking the lead in critical moments. The game came out on PS3 way back in 2014, but a PC version was released this summer. Unfortunately, both the console and PC versions are an update behind the current arcade version, which has been due to arrive on consoles "sometime soon" for about a year. But the dream stays alive, and the version we have is still really good!

The game is a blend of anime airdashers and more ground based combat. Almost every character has access to an airdash/hop, but it can only go forwards, so can't be used as a mobility tool like in other games. Also, air blocking only works against other air attacks or projectiles, and in this game, many characters have MASSIVE ground normals. This means that chicken blocking isn't a thing, and going into the air is a lot more dangerous than in other anime games. This makes for highly interactive, even footsies based gameplay, but at widely variable ranges depending on the matchup. The game's truly unique system mechanics mean that it feels completely different to play from every other game out there.

Though the roster is relatively small at 16 characters, each character has a unique attribute that sets them apart from the rest. For example, Vatista cannot be Counter Hit, and has charge moves in all 4 directions (Back charge, Down charge, Forward Charge, Up Charge). Gordeau can steal GRD from the opponent with his comboable command grabs. Merkava can fly for brutal neutral and oppressive setplay. Carmine's moves leave puddles of blood on the ground which he can utilize later in the match. Even Hyde, the games MC and most basic character has one - his normals involving his sword deal chip damage. The game manages to have many unique characters without giving each one a "gimmick button" like blazblue does. There's bound to be a character you're interested in, so give it a try!

Features
- The innovative GRD Gauge, the games main mechanic. A gauge shared between two players that works like a tug-of-war mechanic. GRD is gained for offensive maneuvers like forward movement and successfully hitting or throwing the opponent, but also for defensive maneuvers like blocking and teching throws. Every 17 seconds, whoever is ahead on GRD is awarded Vorpal State - A 10% damage boost that can be expended to perform a Chain Shift, which freezes the screen and opponent, cancelling your move and/or allowing you to react to what your opponent is doing. Chain Shift is so powerful that whoever has access to it is usually considered to be winning the match, regardless of the players life bars.
- An intricate system which rewards deliberate offense and powerful defense. Strong blocking is eventually rewarded with access to chain shift (and thus the advantage), so offense needs to be structured wisely.
- Simple control scheme, with 3 attack buttons and a utility button.
- Shield, a powerful high-risk high-reward defensive technique that prevents the user from teching throws or switch from/to high/low block when used, but can help create holes in the opponents pressure, generate GRD, or make otherwise safe moves punishable.

There's no PC<->Playstation crossover, right? How big is the PC community and or how many people here have Xrd on PC? Also, was there any confirmation that Rev was actually being ported outside that one rumor? I haven't picked up Rev and I'm really waffling; I have a ps3 but my setup is really awkward and requires me to unplug my computer and plug in my PS3 int my monitor; not having to do that every time I want to switch from one to the other is a pretty big plus.

UNIEL is definitely anime but it's not an airdasher by any means. It's a bit like Aquapazza in that both games are a lot closer to more "traditional" fighting game styles than other anime games are.

There are a quite a few people still playing Xrd on PC - the catch is that matchmaking is pretty much dead, and it's rare to just happen upon an open and populated lounge to play in. I've had plenty of matches with goons here, or by asking for matches in the steam channel of the guilty gear discord. I'll admit that it's not as quick and convenient as matchmaking in SFV, but people have been friendly and I've had pretty good luck.

I've heard negative reviews of the PS3 version of Revelator, mostly due to framerate issues related to trying to run the game on older hardware. Ask poster booyah, he ended up refunding the PS3 version. I don't really know what the latest rumor is about the PC release of revelator, unfortunately.

Eurogamer said they knew the port house that was working on it in their look at ps3 performance of rev a few months ago. it will probably be out before next summer i'd guess.

until then you can always play it on ps now for pc lol

nah it means theres like hours and hours of talking in ASW fighting games and they'd have to pay big rear end checks to english actors to get them to do the work when they know that doing so won't actually sell any more copies of the game

the only time english va matters in an anime game is like the first two iterations when casual ppl are like "oh this looks cool" and then when you're paying for 60 dollar updates its the dudes that would buy it if your patch notes said only: "aded an tity"

The dub for blazblue was actually pretty entertaining, even outside of the visual novel crap.

Seeing as how few copies each iteration of the games sold, it was probably a good decision for them to nix the dub for CF. Apparently that story mode is bonkers in length. I do think the loss of a dub in Revelator stings more though. Bedman :sigh:

That translates to ArcSys being a stupid company who gave up on fully localizing after one of their games got a full localization and was very close to JP release and everyone liked that so the logical conclusion is never do it again for either game even the one that had English voices from the start.
