after a great meal i like to lie on the ground and feel like garbage

Halcyon City. The metropolis of tomorrow! The home of the Invincible League of Justice! The place where dreams are made and heroes can really make their mark. That's not where you are, though, not by a long shot.

You live in Summitview, a small mountain town a few hours away. You may have been to Halcyon before, but it seems like it couldn't be further from you and your life. You and a few of your friends have formed a heroic team of your own. There's not a lot of trouble around Summitview, but you've had a few chances to do some real good. To really make it, though, you'd need to prove yourself to the League somehow. If they sponsored you, brought you in to Halcyon, that would offer opportunities you couldn't even dream of.

That'd be great, right?

---

This aims to be a light-hearted, heroic game with dips into earnest, interpersonal teen drama. I hope to explore questions with the team like "How can where you are change who you are?" and "How do you want to define yourself?"

All official playbooks are legal, but I'd ask that you talk to me on synirc's #swampthings, PMs, or a similar medium before applying with a Doomed, Innocent, or Reformed. I feel like those are going to be a rougher fit for the intended theme, but if you have a killer pitch then I'm sure we can make it work out. Keep in mind that this is going to start off as a fairly small-scale and personal game, so please adjust your overall power level to fit.

Applications will be due October 16th, but that is subject to change based on interest. I am looking for at least one team of 4-6, but I may have two teams if I'm really inspired. I'm a sucker for images and character themes, so please add those to your application!

---

Questions to answer in addition to your playbook:
  1. Which hero inspired you to get into the business?
  2. What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?
  3. What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?
  4. What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?
  5. (optional) What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?
  6. (optional) A thread name for the IC thread.

AGDQ 2018 Awful Block Survivor

Mystia’s Theme

quote:

Name: Mystia

Real Name: Chloe Minelli

Look: Woman, White, Normal Skin, Dark Clothing, Fantastical Costume

Playbook: The Nova

Abilities: Sorcery

Labels:

Danger: +1
Freak: +2
Saviour: 0
Superior: 0
Mundane: 0

Moves:

Burn: When you charge up your powers, roll + conditions you currently have marked. On a hit, hold 3
burn. On a 7-9, mark a condition. On a miss, hold 2 burn and mark three conditions.
Spend your burn on your flares. You lose all burn at the end of the scene.

Flares:

Boost: Spend 1 burn to supercharge a teammate’s efforts with your powers, giving them a +1 bonus to their roll as if you had spent Team from the pool.

Elemental Awareness: Spend 1 burn and mark a condition to open your mind up to the world around you with your powers. You can ask any one question about the world around you, and the GM will answer honestly.

Overcharge: You channel the full capacity of your incredible powers to overcome an obstacle, reshape your environment, or extend your senses. Spend 2 burn to take a 10+ when you unleash your powers.

Shielding: You call up a fast protective field to stop a danger. Spend 1 burn to defend someone else from an immediate threat, rolling + Freak instead of + Savior.

Moment of Truth: Your mind’s eye opens, and you can see the world around you like never before. You can control it, at will, with ease. Of course, warping reality tends to have ramifications down the line, but in your moment of godhood...how could you possibly be worried?

Team Moves: When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if there is any fear in their eyes when they look at you. If they say no, take +1 forward and mark potential. If they say yes, immediately shift your Danger up and Savior down.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them how they could stop you, if it came down to it. Give them Influence over you and clear a condition.

Oh, hehe, hi. I didn’t see you there. Umm, so, my name is Mystia. Well, that’s my superhero name, but you probably don’t want to hear my real name. Then again, it’s not like I work too hard on hiding my real identity. Uhh, it’s hard to do so with the… nature of my powers. Oh yeah, my powers. I’m a mage. Or would it be witch? I’m not too familiar with the official terminology and I- oh am I rambling? Hehe, sorry about that. So yeah, I can cast spells, but my problem is that I don’t really have any idea how they work. And they tend to be uhh umm destructive? Uncontrollable? Yeah, those sound like the right words.

quote:

When did you first use your powers?

With this question, do you mean intentionally or unintentionally? Like first time ever? *sigh* Ok, so I was in my family’s attic and umm I came across this pretty cool looking book. As you could probably tell, I like books. Stereotypical nerd, right? Hehe. Oh, yeah, sorry. Back to how I completely ruined the attic. So yeah, uhh, first time I used my powers I managed to nearly destroy my attic. Great way to make a debut with my powers, huh?

Uhh so apparently, the book had a lot of magical energy in it. And like I mean a lot. And all that magical energy decided to channel itself into the closest font, or whatever counts as a font for magical energy, which was me. Wooooo. I mean, I think Magica could probably explain it better, but uhh that’s sorta what I got from her explanations.

Oh yeah, back to first use of my powers. So basically all these blue light energy things started flying out of the book and flow into me. So uhh obviously, I freak out. And Magica was talking about how the magical powers are based on my emotional states and because of that, I was making everything in the attic levitate and fly around in a cyclone of random stuff we threw up there. I mean, there was like an old tv and a few big books and- uhhh I guess what was in the cyclone isn’t really important. Sorry.

quote:

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?

Who, outside the team, helps you control your powers?

That would be Magica. Ummm she’s sorta one of the biggest magic wielding heroes in Halcyon City. I know, crazy, right? Hehe. She’s like my long distance mentor sorta thing. I mean, I haven’t really officially asked her if I could be her protégé, but, like, she still always gives me advice and helps me with my magical powers.

Oh, yeah, I uhh probably should talk about how we met. Remember when I was first using my powers, right? Turns out the amount of magical energy that was being used was so huge that she was able to detect it all the way from Halcyon City. Turns out, she has the ability to transport herself far distances. I mean, I guess it makes sense since she told me that magic has infinite possibilities, but still it’s uhh awesome to know that I could probably do that in the future. Maybe I’ll use it to get away from everyone who doesn’t like me. Hehehe.

So, she comes and sees me creating this, like, death cyclone and meanwhile I’m still scared and confused about what was going on. Next thing I know, she’s casting this crazy magic and golden chains shoot out and ensnare me. I get chained to the floor and everything that was flying just crashes onto the ground. My parents rush up and of course start freaking out as well and Magica has to explain everything to them after she takes of look at me and uses her magic to scry why I suddenly am able to use magic after having never used it before or had any knowledge of using it.

Ever since then, she’s made time to communicate with me and monitor my powers. She’s pretty cool, if a bit stoic. She’s got this like hyper serious woman vibe going on which is great. She’s even taught me some meditation techniques to help me not lose control of my emotions. Maybe I’ll be like her when I grow up. Hehehe. I wish. Maybe I should learn about keeping control of my powers before trying to be anything like Magica. Still, if I do this ummm hero stuff, Magica said it’d help me understand my powers more. Plus, I get to be like her, so, hehe, that’s really cool.

quote:

Who was the first person you accidentally hurt with your powers?

So, when I said before that my powers are based around my feelings? Yeah, that came back to rear its ugly head. Yes, I am home schooled now, but I used to go to normal school. I wasn’t popular. I know, what a surprise. But yeah, I got bullied quite a bit by some really annoying kids. One girl in particular, Marisha Lewis, was the queen bee of the school and loved making fun of my glasses or my hair. So, soon after that first incident, I was in the cafeteria and she literally starts insulting me in front of the entire school. Uhhhh, I ended up causing all the food in the cafeteria to fly at her. Like all of it, even the food in the kitchen. Turns out all that food wasn’t good for her, hehehe. She sustained some pretty bad injuries, especially from the frozen food. Needless to say, I wasn’t allowed to come back to the school after that. On the other hand, Marisha stopped bullying people. I’ll take any small victories. Hehehe.

quote:

Why do you continue to use your powers?

Because I don’t have a choice about whether I want to use them or not? Uhh I mean, like, I’m basically a walking storage device of crazy magical powers. In a way, you could say that I am just condensed magical energy. And even with all my magical powers, I still can’t use it to help control my powers. Hehehe. A bit sad, right?

Then again, even if I am just a walking magical bomb with a short fuse, magical powers are still pretty awesome. When I’m feeling happy or confident, I uhhh have a better grasp of my powers. In a sense that I’m actually able to wield them to do things that I want them to do rather than them just assuming what I want them to do. It’s crazy, I know. Plus, even though it was scary at the time, making a cyclone out of random stuff in my attic was still pretty awesome.

quote:

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?

Geez. People are still talking about that? Ok, like, I understand that freezing an entire street was a bit overkill, but uhh it’s not like I intended to do that. Oh, yeah, context. So, basically, there was a small theft. Well, it was still pretty expensive stuff, or at least I’m assuming it was. I uhh didn’t bother to see what the person was actually stealing. And I had recently had a talk with Magica about being a hero, so I thought it’d be a good time to try and stop him.

He was getting a bit far away and I was starting to get flustered and then I had a gigantic surge of adrenaline. I basically shouted “Freeze!” Yeah, aren’t I just the coolest? Hehehe. I ended causing a gigantic blizzard to blow through the street and uhhh froze everyone who had the unfortunate privilege of standing in the road. But I still managed to catch the thief! I wasn’t allowed to stay at the scene once Magica arrived since they didn’t want to risk me doing something crazy like that again. Oh, and everyone in the area got frightened of me after that. Maybe next time I see someone, I’ll say “Ice to meet you.” Hehehe. Not like that reputation is going to get away from me anytime soon.

quote:

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?

Oh man, I totally got to save someone’s life. Hehehe, and I have to say that I looked really cool doing it. Like, Magica came to visit one day and totally had to fight some evil supervillain with all sorts of technology. I think his name was something like Tech Maestro or something. But yeah, I thought it’d be uhhh totally cool for me to go and watch her in action. I uhh had powers, so I wasn’t in danger, but being able to see Magica in action was going to be so awesome!

What wasn’t awesome was when a car flew towards a couple who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Magica was too busy dealing with all of Techno Maestro’s robots that she didn’t notice. I knew this was totally the time I should uhhh show that my powers aren’t totally destructive for everyone around me. Hehehe. I willed a magical shield to surround the couple and protect them from the car hitting them as well as the explosion that followed. It uhh may not be the flashiest success story, but I still got to use my powers in a controlled way that didn’t accidentally get innocent people involved. Maybe it’s an indication that I can be a hero. Hehehe.

quote:

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?

Uhhhh I guess the peace and quiet? Like, Halcyon City looks like the coolest place to be, but uhhh, it just seems so busy. Like I’ve heard the lights never turn off and that there are people everywhere you look. I’m basically a gigantic loser, so I don’t really go outside. Hehehe. I also really like reading, so loud places aren’t really good for me.

Summitview is great because it’s peaceful. Ok, it gets a bit uhhh boring, but it also means I can basically just go anywhere and sit down and read. Well, I used to be able to go anywhere. My powers make that uhhh difficult now. Hehehe. Still, there’s a lot of hills, large fields and forests where I can go and just read without being interrupted. Or using my powers without accidentally hurting people. Hey, I need to use them to learn how to control them. I’m sure Magica would understand, hehehe.

quote:

Why do you care about the team?

Well, because they’re dumb enough to hang around with a monster like me without worrying about accidentally dying. Hehehe. I mean, it’s nice that I don’t have to be a hero on my own. I mean, uhhh, can you imagine how much of a disaster I’d be on my own? I might as well be a supervillain with all the collateral damage I cause. Hehehe.

But still, they can help me keep calm and not accidentally freeze a street or swarm someone with a barrage of objects that just happen to be laying around. In exchange, they get to use my uhh unique brand of awesome magic. Oh, and I can also not entirely take the blame for causing collateral damage. That helps too. Hehehe.

quote:

What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?

The camera spirals around Mystia as she sits reading her magic book, seemingly unaware of all the objects that are circling in the air around her. The camera continues to spiral and zoom in closer until it gets a shot of her face. She looks up and notices the camera, looking a little shocked as all the objects suddenly fall onto the floor. She sticks out her tongue sheepishly before holding the book in front of the camera, leading to a scene change.

Have you heard of the great thief Mockingbird? Of course you have. Mockingbird is not just a thief, but one of the greatest thieves of all time, her status is almost legendary among both heroes and villains alike. If you ask them about her, they will tell you about how she is like a ghost, able to disappear from sight in almost a blink of the eye, or how her hand-to-hand skills are almost unparalleled, felling opponents twice her size.

Mockingbird stole, not for money or fame, but for the sheer thrill of it. To her, the whole city was her playground. Good, bad, none of that mattered to her, what really mattered was to make a show. It wasn't enough to steal under the cover of darkness; she wanted people to know that it was her. Cards would be sent, detailing the time, place, and object to be stolen, almost as if she was issuing a challenge to the participants involved, "Try and stop me, if you can!" And she would always arrive at the appointed time, in a grand fashion. Her entrances were always big, loud, and flashy, as were her escapes. Even with all the handicaps she placed on herself, she would always escape, stolen object in hand, laughing all the way. It was almost like she was invincible, and nobody could stop her. Not the villains she antagonized, not the law, and certainly not the heroes.

Not until Nova Star.

Nova Star was said to be the only one who was a match for Mockingbird. While Mockingbird would fool others, Nova Star would see through her misdirection and tricks, and catch Mockingbird off guard. There was always a back and forth between them, with neither side ever gaining an advantage on the other. Sometimes, Mockingbird would win, and escape with her prize, other times Nova Star would win, and stop her from reaching her goal. It was almost like an elaborate game of cat and mouse, and some say they can see them both smiling when they battle.

But, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Mockingbird had unintentionally crossed off one of the biggest mob bosses around, Tobias "Red Eye" Hunter, during one of her heists. Tobias took what she did as a great insult, he wanted to "punish" Mockingbird for taking him lightly, so he ordered his underlings to hurt those closest to her. He wanted to break her spirit, and show the world that no-one crosses Tobias Hunter.

It didn't work. Instead, all it did was light a fire within her. This wasn't a game anymore, people she care about are in trouble because of her, and she refused to back down like a scared child. Mockingbird, together with Nova Star, slowly started to dismantle Tobias' empire, using their skills together to strip him of his power, until he had nothing left. It ended with them having a showdown against Tobias on the roof of his main building, and with their combined efforts, they took him down along with his empire for good.

No-one knows what happened to Mockingbird after that. Some say she died heroically, sacrificing her life for Nova Star, others say she took Tobias' money, and is now living in her own private resort on some remote tropical island.

None of those are true. What people don't know is she took a bit of his money, and moved to Summitview with her adopted child, retiring from the thief life for good.

I know this because I am that child. I am Robin Starling, Sparrow, and were my mother was a great thief, I intend to be a great hero!

"Aw, geez honey, you're making me blush! Oh, please keep telling them about how great I am!"

M-Mother? What are you doing here? This is supposed to be my interview!

"What!? Are-are you ashamed of me!? Oh, woe is me! I only wanted to support my one and only darling daughter but she rejects me! Will my suffering ever truly end!?"

Ngh. Fine! You can stay! But please try to act your age.

"I knew you'd change your mind eventually, honey!"

quote:

How did you first meet your mentor?

It was when I was a child. I was abandoned by my biological parents, and forced to live on the streets. It was too much for me, I collapsed from the hunger, and I thought for sure that it would be the end for me. That was when my mother found me. It was during one of her heists, when she was running from Nova Star, she saw a frail little girl collapsed in an alleyway and stopped. She threw away the object she spent the last few weeks trying to obtain, and ran to my body, checking to see if I was alive.

"I was a thief, not a monster."

...Yes. Nova Star had the perfect opportunity to catch my mother once and for all, but when she witnessed the scene, she let her go, pretending as if she lost her during the chase. Mother took me in, and raised me as her own.

"It was a real turning point in my career. I wasn't sure how long I'd be able to keep up the thief life while taking care of a kid."

Yes, but thanks to you, mother, I have a home.

"And thanks to you, I have someone I can tease all day!"

...Ngh.

quote:

When and why did you choose to train with them?

I chose to train because I knew, it was my calling. Ever since I can remember, I knew it was my destiny to become a hero! I would grow strong, so I would help the helpless, and give hope to those that are lost! I will strike down evil, wherever it may stand, in the name of all that is right! I will-

"It was anime."

W-w-w-w-what!?

"She watched a bunch of anime growing up, and she was always a huge fan of those old sentai series. She had a bunch of lines memorized, and she'd always act out scenes like a huge dork. Hah! I remember one time when she was 7, she took a stick and a bunch of toilet paper and-"

STOP.NOW.PLEASE.

"Aw."

quote:

Why did they agree to train you?

"Mm."

Do you want to take this one?

"...I didn't want to, originally. I wanted her to have a regular life, and not have the same kind of crazy life I had, but I couldn't. Robin- Robin has powers. She could create lightning and control wind. It developed when she was still small, and what kind of mother would I be if I didn't help her control it? I never want her to hurt anybody by accident. She's also so darn stubborn about wanting to be a hero, I couldn't say no to her in the end. I taught her how to best control her powers, and how to fight. I'm still worried about her, but if that's what she really wants, then I guess it's my job as a parent to support her."

Mother... that's... that was... I don't know what to say.

"Plus I now have SO MANY MORE embarrassing stories to tell about your time training!"

...I knew this moment was too good to last.

quote:

Who else, outside of the team, knows about your training?

Nova Star. She visits us regularly under her civilian identity, Sarah Cooper. Sarah is a lot more professional and serious compared to my mother, and she doesn't approve of my training, and she makes sure to let her know every time she visits. She and my mother get into arguments about it sometimes, but it never lasts long.

"She's also my girlfriend."

Mother, I do not think it necessary to share the details of your private life.

"You're right. I could be sharing MORE juicy details! Oh, oh! Why don't I talk about our date last night when we-"

MOTHER PLEASE.

quote:

Why do you care about the team?

Because are stronger together than we would ever be as one! A team is not just a collection of individuals; it is the combination of all our hopes and dreams together! We fight, in the name of justice, as our souls come together as one!

"Hm? Oh, I don't really have anything to say. I'm just enjoying the show she's putting on."

quote:

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?

Ah! Yes! That would be Kazuma, the Swift Blade! He is everything I aspire to be as a hero. He is a brave, dashing soul, who made it his life to protect the people, at all costs. While most may think it below them, Kazuma is known for taking the day to help with the most mundane of tasks, all in the name of serving the people. I hope one day I may be as great as he is.

"He's also a total dork."

Mother he is not a dork! He's courageous and compassionate!

"Nah he's a total dork. What kind of nerd uses a katana in this day and age?

...He's not a dork...

quote:

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?

Oh, well, I wouldn't exactly calling it embarrassing as much as it was a learning experience! Yea, let's go with that.

It happened when one of the convenience stores in town was being robbed. I thought, yes, it is finally time to make my debut as the great heroine, Sparrow! I had spent the entire night preparing my speech for such an occasion, granted it was a speech meant for super villains and not small time burglars, but it's fine, I would just improvise! I had everything set up perfectly. I had my speech memorized, I had the music ready, I set up a bucket of cherry blossoms to fall behind me, everything was set, and it was perfect! The music played right on queue, I went through my whole speech without missing a single line, and I was able to use my wind powers to have the cherry blossoms blow in the exact direction I wanted! It went exactly as I planned!

...Unfortunately, by the time I was done the criminals had already long fled the scene.

"It's fine, honey. The police caught them in the end, so it wasn't that big of a deal."

...I suppose.

quote:

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?

Ah, yes, my tale of redemption!

Remember Tobias? My mother and Nova Star might have taken him down, but some of his enforcers were still out on the run, with a few of them looking for revenge.

Enter Scythana.

Scythana is one of the more vicious enforcers, and she was looking for blood. She came to Summitview because she heard rumors of Mockingbird living here, and she was ready to rip the whole town apart to find her.

Mother wanted to fight, but Sarah discouraged her, she told mother that it would only cause more trouble if more people knew where she was, so mother relented. Sarah asked us to stay still while she got back-up to deal with Scythana.

I snuck out of the house the moment I had a chance.

This was my town, and I would not let it be destroyed by a villain such as her! I have been training most of my life for this moment, and I knew, I was ready, this is my time to show how much I have matured. I confronted Scythana, and let her know, that I, Sparrow, would be one to strike her down! I channeled the lightning inside of me, until I could feel the energy coursing through my whole body. I concentrated it all, on one, single blast, and took her down, with one strike!

"Actually, you missed. Your lightning shot ended up ricocheting all over the place until it hit an empty truck, causing a chain explosion, and that explosion caused the house next to it to collapse on her.

Yes, fine, I missed, but at least I took her down! And nobody was living in that house at that time, so nobody got hurt! I'd say it was a success!

"Whatever you say, honey. You're still grounded for the next 5 months."

...Aw.

quote:

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?

I would miss my fellow compatriots, of course! Me, and a few other like-minded people, have formed a group wherein we talk and discuss about the world of heroes! We discuss ways in which heroes could fight, and how much of an example they are to our community!

"It's a super-hero dork club that's located in the back of some comic book store."

...That's one way of looking at it, yes.

quote:

What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to?

Hmph, you are mistaken if you think I have any other interests! The pursuit of heroics is my life, and I do not allow other distractions in!

"That's not what your diary says.

MOTHER! A diary is a sacred place to hide the secrets of the heart! Have you no shame!?

"No. Now do you wanna tell them or should I?"

...Fine. I actually really want to be a pop idol singer.

"Are you blushing? Awww that's so cute!"

Can we get to the next question please?

quote:

How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?

Um, well, I suppose... there'd be other people to help, right? Agents and such? I mean, not like I'd abandon my dream of being a hero, but it might be fun to do a bit of singing by the side. Maybe one of the other heroes can help me? Is that too much? Maybe... somebody famous can notice me and give me a chance?

...Why are you laughing so much, mother?

quote:

(optional) What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?

Sparrow is surrounded by a bunch of thugs, but she stands strong. She takes a deep breath as energy starts coursing throughout her body, filling the area around her with electricity. After a few seconds, she releases the energy, but misses, and hits a dumpster instead, causing it to explode, knocking her and the thugs out at the same time.

Moves:

❑❑ Fireside chat: When you seek advice from your mentor, roll + the Label they embody. On a hit they will tell you what to do. On a 10+, mark potential if you follow their advice, and take +1 ongoing to follow through. On a 7-9, you get +1 forward to see it through if you do it their way. On a miss, they don’t have time for you because something big has gone down; mark a condition, GM’s choice.

❑❑ Venting frustration: When you directly engage while you are Angry, you can roll + the Label your mentor denies and clear Angry.

❑❑ Be mindful of your surroundings: When you assess the situation before entering into a fight, you may ask one additional question, even on a miss.

Mentor

Ren Starling aka Mockingbird
Embodies: Superior
Denies: Savior

Mentor Resources
Communicators, a hidden base, a vehicle (her old motorcycle).

Moment of Truth
The moment that you show who you really are: your mentor, or something different. You can do whatever your mentor could do and more. You can do the incredible, even the things they always failed to accomplish. Of course, they’re not going to see you the same way, no matter which path you choose…

Team Moves
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if you’ve been a good leader or effective teammate. If they say yes, your mentor loses Influence over you and you mark potential. If they say no, your mentor gains Influence over you, and you take +1 forward on using the Label your mentor embodies. When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them a secret about your mentor (including your feelings towards them). Give them Influence over you and add 1 Team to the pool.

Transformed Moves

Wish I could be: When you comfort or support someone, if you tell them what you most envy about them, you can roll + Freak instead of + Mundane.

Not human enough: When you directly engage a threat in a terrifying fashion, mark a condition to choose an additional option, even on a miss.

Be the monster: When you frighten, intimidate, or cow others with your monstrous form, roll + Freak. On a hit, they are thrown off and make themselves vulnerable to you, or they flee. On a 10+, choose one. On a 7-9, choose two.

- you frighten others you had not intended to scare
- you hurt someone or break something you shouldn’t have
- you feel like more of a monster afterward; mark a condition (GM’s choice)

On a miss, they react with violence, hatred, and paranoia, and you suffer the brunt of it.

When our team first came together...

We drew attention and ire from plenty during the fight. One important person in particular now hates and fears us. Who is it?

Relationships

___________________ comforted you when you were at your lowest.
___________________ knew you before you changed.

Influence

You try not to care what other people think, even if you can’t shut everyone out. Give Influence to one teammate.

Team Moves

When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, clear one condition if they treat you like a perfectly normal person and mark potential if they praise your power or abilities.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, ask them if they think you’re losing or gaining humanity. If they say losing, mark a condition and mark potential. If they say gaining, clear a condition and shift Mundane up and any other Label down.

Moment of Truth

It’s so easy to forget that you’re not your body, and you’re not the voice in your head—you’re both. Be the monster, and save them anyway. Smash down walls, and speak softly. Because when you embrace it, you can do anything. Of course, putting on a display like this is sure to rile up those who see only the monster when they look at you…

• Who were you before?

I used to live on the Indian Preserve outside of Summitview proper, it was a quiet and peaceful life and of course healthy mountain air and the great outdoors is good for a growing girl. I had only been to Summitview once or twice before anf not many people from outside the tribe ever came down our way, so we didn't know about a lot of goings on in Summitview, it wasn't our business a lot of the time

Until we were suddenly involved.

• When did you change? What caused it?

A company called Cheiron Cryptoinnovations, like most dubious companies they bought some land off of the mayor and made it into a private facility with big disproportionate response signs and armed guards with guns and things around the place to keep people out. And like most dubious companies that buy private land deep in the woods and try and keep people from investigating they turn out to be doing some really extralegal stuff. Where the extra-legal stuff gets weird though is when it involved the capture and pulping of nature spirits in order to turn into super-fertilizer. So you know, magic, just, straight up magic combined with science and used in a pretty dodgy and corporate fashion because, well just probably because.

Of course I got involved when some really weird fish started to turn up in our river and we traced it back to the source. And what happened next was very complicated, but when they tested the latest batch on a pumpkin patch, and I was in the pumpkin patch, and girl, concentrated nature magic juices and pumpkin were forcefully shoved together to become.

Me.

• Who, outside of the team, is helping you understand your new body?

The oddly named Doctor Peace a two-fisted adventuring archaeologist and someone who is fairly well up on weird magic stuff and weirder science that might as well be magic, is one of the only people who gave me an explanation that wasn't either a load of magical stuff that went over my head or a bunch of technical jargon that I couldn't understand. The man is generally shunned by the occult community for brazen use of magic but is also begrudgingly accepted as the authority on the 'wild magics' that appear in nature, and In little words he essentially broke it down and the conversation was something like this."

"Your body is now almost pure nature magic, but the human body ain't supposed to handle that amount of magic without an anchor to contain it, it tends to fly off in different directions to explosive results. So in order to stop you exploding the magic melded you with the nearest plant-life available because that is where it lives a lot of the time and you're now as much a part of the natural world as the natural world is part of you in order to stop you from engaging in a cataclysmic aetheric reaction, you see?"

"I don't really."

"Okay fine how about this. You are mostly plant because otherwise you'd die. Better?"

"I guess?" I'm not sure how that happened but it's the thought that count.

• Why don’t you just try to hide yourself away?

I can't do that now, I've become famous (or more likely infamous) in these parts, I've become the de-facto official guardian of these mountain woods and the people and animals that live within it. And I guess I sort of have a duty to protect what's mine from people like Cheiron or other such crooks from outside trying to bring their dumb supervillainy to my place.

And since the threats keep coming from the outside, I should go to the outside and keep them out. And keep them out of all the other green places too, and I suppose that means I have to keep them out of the city also. I'm a keeper-outer me, and I've been getting really good at it.

• Why do you care about the team?

Eh, they're alright. I guess. I mean it's not like I needed their help it's just that I find it easier with them rather than without them. It's not like I barely know anyone else from Summitview and they are the only people that have come with me to the big city or anything. It's not like if I didn't have people reminding me I'm not a monster, I might think I'm one or anything.

I'm very protective of my friends.

• Which hero inspired you to get into the business?

Doctor Peace told me I should maybe try the heroing out. 'But I was a monster' I said, 'I'm very inhuman looking, how can people accept me as a superhero looking like this?'

"Well" Doctor Peace had said. "Let me tell you about Brook. Brook started off life as an animate golem, nothing but a clayman filled with magic words to work as a servant in some minor magician's flat. All he did was sweep and tidy things up and when said magician was called up on drunk casting charges he sold the Golem onto another hero to pay his bail. But as a jape, or misplaced goodwill or maybe as some sort of curious experiment the buyer put the receipt for the clay-man into his head, and told him he owned himself."

"And after experiencing free will for the first time in it's entire life, it decided it wanted to be a hero, so it went and applied, and got turned down of course because he was technically a magical tool, not a real person. So he trained with other heroes, and operated at the street level and worked at it, getting better and stronger until the people of Halcyon accepted him with open arms and the heroes couldn't ignore him anymore. He started out as just an glorified animate tool for a lazy magic user, and now he is a premier hero in the city, you think you can't be a hero because you look inhuman? He didn't even start as a sentient being but he managed it."

"Somehow I think you can too."

• What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?

One time when patrolling in the woods at night when I was trying my super-heroics, I heard the sound of distant screaming in the deep forest and rushed to the scene, expecting to see innocents in distress.

It turned it to be just a meeting of scouts telling scary stories around a campfire, about a long wickerman who stalked the forest in search of the wicked with burning eyes and a rictus grin. So when I burst out of the undergrowth looking long and spindly with burning eyes and a grin carved on my pumpkin, 'hilarity' ensued.

And that's how I became an urban myth in Summitview. They didn't even get my gender right, that was the worst thing.

• What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?

Ever since the appearance of the 'Summitville Wicker Man' the amount of illegal poaching happening in these woods have dropped to zero, and a few species on the endangered list have been making a slow comeback since they aren't being hunted to extinction anymore.

And all I had to do was embrace my reputation as an Urban Myth and scare the living daylights out of people. Fear is a great motivator for positive environmental change, especially if it involves chasing people through a dark forest in the middle of the night. It's good cardio, I'd recommend it.

• What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?

When you are as close to nature as it's possible to get without imbibing strange substances you feel the absence from the roots of your home more emphatically then if you were just a small town girl moving to the city. I feel it here, I feel it in my bones

The city makes me uncomfortable, a jungle of glass and concrete, very little green, very little open space, barely visible wildlife apart from stray animals and vermin and, too many people. I've built a vegetable plot on the roof just so I have somewhere to plant my feet, but it's not the same.

• (optional) What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?

Manitou gently strokes a kitten to calm it, lays it on the ground, and encourages it to safety with a gentle pat. Then she turns back to the criminals entwined in sudden plant roots with a face designed to give the kiddies nightmares and reaches out with long and spindly fingers before it cuts

Is it I that is insane... or the rest of the world?

Hello! Tundra here. How can I help you? Need any kittens saved from trees? Food cooled? Temperature lowered?

No? Oh...

quote:

When did you officially become a part of your legacy?

Half a year ago! Well, that's when I made my contract with Yukisagi.

Who's Yukisagi, you ask? Well, my familiar!

Well, more like the family familiar. Yuki's been my mom's, and her mom's, and her mom's familiar. With that, I am a North-Wind Witch in training! Woohoo!

quote:

What’s the greatest accomplishment of your legacy?

Saving Halcyon City! When it was still a measly town. Yeah, that's ages ago. I know. My grandmother stopped it from being burnt down, defeating the vile Darkfire Witches once and for all!

... or so we thought. I'll explain later.

quote:

How does the public perceive your legacy?

They're a main stay of Halcyon City, and.. huh, how would you call that? Mascot sounds a bit wrong, but... it's close enough. One of the most famous families of heroes known to the city, and one of the most influential ones.

My mother made sure of that. But... I'm not so sure I'm anywhere as great as a hero as she is! I mean, I kind of... mostly saved kittens of trees and stuff.

quote:

How does your legacy tie into your reasons for being a hero?

Well, uhm... it's just kinda a thing we do? Besides, being a magical girl is super fun. I get to help people, use cool magic and stuff. I mean, my mother did it, her mother did it, and so on. It's just what we do! And I'm not about to stop such a tradition.

quote:

Why do you care about the team?

Why wouldn't I? I care about everyone! It's what I made my contract for, after all. Got to protect the people around me. Having some friends to help me with that? Even better!

quote:

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?

Well, my mom! She's always in the news when something big happens in Halcyon City. I wanna be like her! Just got to get better with my magic, and I'll be there in no time!

quote:

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?

Eep! You wanna know about that! Oh no!

... Okay, so I just got my magical girl form from Yuki and was raring to go help people. So naturally... someone led me to a cat stuck in a tree. So I jumped up...

And missed, hitting said tree face first. Fell down, and tried again. Got up this time, and got the cat down... Unfortunately, I got my foot stuck on the branch, so now I was stuck in the tree.

Mom was just standing close by, laughing.

quote:

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?

I stopped a house from burning down and saved the people inside! Basically, the mother was out for groceries, leaving her kids in the house, including a baby. But she had forgotten to turn off the oven, and the entire thing went ablaze. The children had no idea what to do and hid in their rooms. I had to get them out, one by one, and then I managed to turn the oven off after freezing most of the room.

Honestly, it felt great! I really felt like I did the right choice, going down this path.

quote:

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?

I really like the atmosphere. Everyone knows everyone here. Hell, I think most people know who's behind the costume, and they just play along. Wouldn't surprise me! Well, at least I'm safe from that. After all my hair changes from black to blue, and the hairstyle and everything changes too.

quote:

(optional) What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?

The scene shows a burglar trying to flee from Tundra, but with a wave of her wand, he nearly trips as his feet are suddenly frozen solid. He then turns to Tundra, who just smiles, going "Nuh uh uh!"

Tundra, the Legacy
Legacy Name: The North-Wind Witches
Real Name: Carol Winters
Look: Woman, White, Unassuming Clothing, Magical Girl Costume

Abilities: divine armor, magic weaponry, mythic might, legendary speed, god-like beauty

Legacy Moves
Fight the good fight
When you pull your punches while directly engaging a threat, you can roll + Savior instead of +Danger. If you do, you cannot choose to impress, surprise, or frighten your foe.

Words of the past:
When you seek the guidance of one of your elders or a member of your legacy, tell them a problem you face, and ask them a question about the problem. They will answer it honestly, and tell you what to do. Take +1 ongoing if you listen. If you go your own way, mark potential.

Legacy
Your legacy is an important part of Halcyon City.

Name the different members of your legacy (at least two):

Holly Winters
is still active and prominent in the city.

That's my mom! She's the best! She's been fighting the good fight for a good 60 years now.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that, didn't I? Becoming a magical girl slows down aging. A lot. So Mom? Got a lot of practice. She's one of the most renown heroes in the city!

... I wanna be just like her!

Unfortunately, for now, she's keeping me here in Summitview, "for my own safety". Just means I got to prove how much I've trained, right?

Sandra Winters is the next possible member of your legacy.

My little sis. She's... well, uh... a little bit more competent at most matters than I am. But I got the spirit! Totally! But anyway, she's too young to become a magical girl like me yet, so HAH.

Annalena Winters is retired and quite judgmental.

She's my grandma. And like, reaaaaallly old. Like, 150 years old. No, I'm serious. She's been on the job for that long, and, uh... It kinda shows...

To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of her. She's always so critical of me and mom! I mean, I'm sure she means well, but still...

The Darkfire Witch is the greatest opponent your legacy ever faced... and is still at large.

Remember when I told you about the Darkfire Witches? Yeah, grandma apparently missed one of them. Or the familiar. Like, these dark witches are seriously evil. And always up to no good!

So recently, this one surfaced. Neither Mom or Grandma know much about this one, but she's really powerful! Scary powerful. And she's apparently hiding out in Halcyon City! Eeep.

Whenever time passes, roll + Savior to see how the members of your legacy feel or react to your most recent exploits. Before rolling, ask the other players to answer these questions about your performance. Take -1 to the roll for each “no” answer:

- have you been upholding the traditions of your legacy?
- have you maintained the image of your legacy?
- have you made the other members of your legacy proud?

On a hit, one of them offers you meaningful encouragement, an opportunity, or an advantage. On a 7-9, another is upset with your most recent actions, and will make their displeasure known. On a miss, something you did stirred up the hornet’s nest—expect several members of your legacy to meddle with your life.

Moment of Truth
This is the moment when you prove how much the mantle belongs to you. You seize control of all your powers, and you defeat even impossible odds to prove you are worthy of the name you carry. You accomplish feats even your predecessors couldn’t do. Of course, after you prove something like that, you can expect still more responsibilities to be placed on your shoulders...

Team Moves
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, tell them whether you see them as an equal. If you do, give them Influence over you and mark potential. If you don't, shift Superior up and any other label down.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them a secret about your legacy (including your own true feelings about it) to clear a Condition and give them Influence over you.

Deez Nutz
Jonathan “Recon” Doe
Beacon
--A Day in the life of Recon, Stealthy Superhero!--
My day begins pretty early. I'll be up at 4 in the morning, 4:30 if I had a late night. Stretches and a jog, followed by a huge breakfast. by 7 I'm out the door to do a quick rooftop patrol of mainstreet. 10:30 is time for early lunch break, then the lunchtime high visibility patrol at 11. That's when I just go around street level without camouflage. Gotta build up community trust right? After that I check my drop cameras and try to get a power nap in. Then it's time to go over my intel, and plan any new stake out spots or persons of interest. Around 4 or so it's time for another patrol. When I wrap up varies, I then go home for some exercise, a meal, and some downtime before bed.

Honestly.... I'm so glad I qualified for the local hero bursaries. It's a huge effort to be an active member of the hero community and my patrols would be worthless if they were interrupted by a job. Of course if I want to keep doing this I need to step up my game and qualify on a team, or get some major recognition. If it gets bad I might try and sidekick, but I know if I do I will never get better. If seems like there is always someone new flying around the block, so I gotta hustle to keep in the game you know?

quote:

Hero Name: Recon
It’s a nickname my Uncle gave me after we went hunting and I managed to not only find a deer but take a selfie with it
Real Name: Jonathan Doe
My mother did not realize that my name was practically slang for dead body, she’s been overprotective since I was two, not that it had the desired result...
Look: Smiling Face, Simple Clothing, Iconic Costume
I want to dress nicely but I’m too prone to climbing buildings and running through the forrest, so I stick to hoodies and jeans. My “super suit” on the other hand is set to an orange and black unitard when I’m not being sneaky.
Powers: Camouflage and Stealth / Acrobatics
I’ve been practicing my superhero moves since I could walk. My older sister works for R-Corp and my super suit is made with some material she brought me from their R&D. It’s just color changing fabric.... I think.

The Drive
□ Punch someone I probably shouldn’t I have to prove
□ Kiss someone dangerous ..... I don’t wanna talk about it
□ Earn the respect of a hero I admire See below note/Omni
□ Travel to an incredible place (or time) This is the dream

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?
[i]*NOTE* If there is a legacy on our team I want the older Legacy to be the hero.

Oh man I wish I had powers like Omni. I know I won’t... but they were the one I watched growing up. I want that confidence. I want to see some madman show up with a bomb and think, “better wrap this up quick, I have plans later.”

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?
I leaped on top of a delivery truck to get this thug’s attention. Then the truck began to pull away and I got hit in the back of the head by a passing street lamp. Didn’t knock me out but the guy kept laughing and laughing. Didn’t help that he had armor on him so I couldn’t even fight him properly.

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?
I got the proof that the former Mayor was taking bribes from the Ithikya. That weird fish cult gang. It wasn’t really public fame but it definitely did the most good.

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?
The forest. Real wilderness is incredibly relaxing. That and I love hunting, and fall, and camping parties…. And it’s literally right outside. I don’t want to drive for three hours first.

What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?
Camera pans up to see Recon at the top of the building. He dives down and swings off a lamp post.

Green Bean
May 3, 2009

"A few ether-cycles ago, in my progenitor's time, it was simple. Human summoned you up, asked you for a favour, and either you did the favour or the summoning circle was wrong and you got to eat them. I get the appeal, really I do. It's a nice system, if a bit old-fashioned. But you never get to stick around and have any fun, you know? And that was fine before, but have you looked at them recently? There's billions of them now, yes, like with a 'B'. And they're doing a lot better. They finally figured out that they should dump their poop downstream from the drinking water, and after that nothing really stopped them. Now they have hot dogs, and cartoons, and this thing called the Internet that I don't really understand exactly how it works, but I can't wait to try it!"

"Oh, you hadn't heard? Yeah, that's right, guess who has an infinite number of ethereal appendages and snagged an open-ended summoning contract? This being! Yeah, it was some wizard's apprentice, he wants to learn all about the spirit world, so we're basically doing a cultural exchange. He'll be staying in my sub-finite nexus while I get to live in...where was it...ah, Summitview! He says it's one of the most culturally relevant places on the earthly plane, so I'll finally get to live my dream of helping the humans and learning their ways! Now, I may have exaggerated just how many higher truths I've got stashed in my Byzantium, so when you see him, try to break it to him gently. But the summoning requires mutual consent to cancel, so I should be good even if he gets mad. Human world, here I come!"

Hero Name: El Diablo
Guys, you know I'm not a demon, right? I'm a spirit. They're different things, I swear! Aww, come on guys...
Real Name: Lithomixliam'avanthira'helgrin...
Oh right, humans talk with air and meat. Just call me Liam.
Look: Male, strange body, glowing eyes, mismatched clothing, no costume.
Powers:
Flight - "It's not really flying; I can simply redefine how I personally interact with gravity on a relative basis. I've explained this a dozen times, but no one seems to pay attention."
Pretty Tough - "Earthly matter and forces are just sort of 'eh', you know? It's hard to take seriously unless there's a lot of them."
Radical Shapeshifting - "My substance is fully anchored to this material plane, but if I give that anchor a little *poke*, I can change how that substance is expressed. Humans don't seem to like it when I do that in front of them, though."
Heliokinesis - "I've always been good with...I think the human word for them is 'photons'? I make them ex nihilo, and then move them around. It comes in handy more often than you'd think."

Moves:

❑ Belong in two worlds:
You have the resources that come with your station. Whenever you contact your people, roll + Superior. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 2. On a miss, hold 1, but your people make an uncomfortable demand of you. Spend your hold 1 for 1 to:
- receive a useful piece of alien technology that will allow you to use any ability from another playbook once (choose the ability when you spend the hold)
- consult your people’s knowledge to ask the GM a question about the current situation
- clear a condition through the comfort of contact with your home

❑ The best of them:
When you comfort or support someone by telling them how they exemplify the best parts of Earth, roll + Freak instead of + Mundane.

❑ Not so different after all:
When you talk about your home, roll + Freak. On a 10+, choose two. On a 7-9, choose one. During the conversation, you:
- confess a flaw of your home; add 1 Team to the pool
- mislead them about your home; take Influence over them
- describe the glories of your home; clear a condition
On a miss, you inadvertently reveal more
about yourself than you planned; tell them a
secret or vulnerability you haven’t shared with
Earthlings before now.

Where do you come from?

"It's not so much a place as a state of existence that is congruent with earthly reality. We used to call it a 'higher plane', but my progenitor says that might be misconstrued as a value judgement in human languages."

Why did you come to Earth?

"Man, you've got so much awesome stuff here. Like fiction and laughter and taste (the sense, not the other thing - but also kinda the other thing). Don't get me wrong, home is great, it's just it's kinda boring sometimes. Like, you can only contemplate the higher ethereal mysteries for so long before you want to watch the Avengers, right? And I've basically never been summoned before, so this is my first and possibly only chance to really experience it!"

Why do you want to stay here (for now at least)?

"The fall TV season looks fantastic, and I only just figured out how to use message boards, so that whole world just opened up! Plus, I kinda unintentionally robbed a few restaurants my first few days, before I realised how currency works. So I figure I've gotta save each of them from destruction at least once to make up for it."

Why do your people want you to come home?

"Well, my progenitor's worried because the human plane is a lot more dangerous than ours. Also, my summoner can't return to the earthly plane until I'm ready to go home, and he's kinda irritating all my friends with his questions."

Why do you care about the team?

"They're all really great people, and they stop me from making too many mistakes in unfamiliar situations, i.e. basically everything that isn't watching TV. Plus, they've shown me a lot of fun human stuff I would never have found on my own!"

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?

Nexion, the Enigma

"Confession time - I spent my first few weeks mostly just watching your cartoons and trying your many varieties of heated meat. But I learned about Nexion on the internet - apparently she's an alien from outer space who grew to love Earth and now fights to protect it. It made me realise that I have many advantages normal humans don't, and if I really cared about the human experience, I should help defend it for as long as I can. So that's what I decided to do!"

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?

"Well, I knew from TV that when someone wearing garish clothing and a full face mask walks into a store, they're probably up to no good. So I was waiting in line at the Howdaburger burger when this animal-themed supervillain group walks in the door! Thinking fast, I power up and defeat them before they even have a chance to show off their dangerous superpowers. Unfortunately, it turned out they were just store mascots. I'm...not allowed back there anymore."

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?

"Well, there were reports of cow-tipping from some of the nearby farms. I don't know what exactly that is, but the farmers seemed really upset. So for three nights straight, I went undercover as a cow to catch the perpetrators. Turns out it was a group of random high school seniors. No one got arrested, but I did scare them enough they stopped doing it."

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?

"I like this town, even if it's not exactly the cultural centre of humanity I was promised. What I'll probably miss the most is the public library. They let me vastly exceed my time limit on the internet computers, even though I didn't even have a card!"

What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?
Camera pans over Liam excitedly watching cartoons. He turns to the camera with a toothy grin and gives a big thumbs up!

On a miss, you’re hopelessly embroiled in it and under pressure; mark a condition.

Criminal Mind: When you assess the situation, you can always ask one of the following questions, even on a miss:

- What here is useful or valuable to me?
- How could I best infuriate or provoke ____________?
- What’s the best way in/way past?

Troublemaker: When you help a teammate through destructive, criminal, or rule-breaking actions, you can give them a +2 instead of a +1 when you spend a Team from the pool.

Of course, once you’ve shown what you really are, there’s no going back to playing the clown...

Team Moves: When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if they think you’re cool. If they say yes, give them Influence and take Influence over them. If they say no, mark a condition or spurn them immediately. If they’re a teammate, then either way, add a Team to the pool.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, give them Influence over you, and ask them who they’d like you to be. Mark potential if you show them that person. If they’re a teammate, add a Team to the pool no matter what.

Backstory:

How did you get your powers?

You don't just "get" magic. It's (read this in a stuffy, pretentious accent, if you please) "a rare ability that must be harnessed and nurtured with care, lest its full potential be never achieved". Sarcasm aside, my aunt started giving me lessons when I moved in with her. She told me that a magic user's personality can shape the nature of their powers. According to her, my knack for time manipulation comes from an intense desire to control my own destiny.

What do you do for fun?

Besides the usual stuff (anime, music, and video games)? I play the piano. Snark all you want. It helps me concentrate and keeps my parents off my back about what I'm doing with my free time.

Who, outside the team, thinks better of you than you do?

My friends from school. Paul Bartlett might act like a goofball, but he has a good head on his shoulders. And that's part of what I like about him. Paul took me under his wing on my first day here, when I was feeling totally lost. He's had my back ever since then.

Rita McDowell is my fellow exile from Halcyon City. We've done a lot of commiserating over that. She's really into superhero stuff, and she even designed a logo for me (depicted below). And, well, she believed me when I told her the story about why I got sent to Summitview. That I was trying to do the right thing before my parents gave me the boot. Both of them did.

There's also Aunt Priscilla, but I'll talk more about her later.

Why do you try to be a hero?

I became a villain...a wannabe villain because I was frustrated. And bored. My parents never showed their faces except to dictate my life. Back then, it seemed like everyone just wanted to mold me into a suit just like them. Except Rubedo. Don't ask me his real name. I never even saw his actual face until I took this ring from him. We met when I was learning how to tap into my powers. He showed me the ropes, and it wasn't long before I became his partner in crime. I told myself we were fighting for our freedom against authorities who weren't worth listening to, or some crap like that.

Rubes? He was a magic school dropout who wanted to prove that he didn't need anyone's help to become a great alchemist. Preferably by blasting his old school into rubble and looting the remains. That didn't go over so well with me. I mean, the mech (Rubes called it a "enchantment imbued alchemical combat vehicle". It was totally a mech.) he created for the job was pretty cool, but wrecking the city on the way there? Not so much. For what it's worth, I tried to stop him. We'd arrived at the Academy and left a city block of destruction behind us, but I had to try.

We argued. We had a shoving match on top of the magical weapon. Then Rubedo lost control of the mech, which continued attacking. Stuff got set on fire. People were screaming. Needless to say, we were past the point when talking would do any good. Instead, I began trying spells in a vain attempt to bring the mech down. I couldn't concentrate. All I could think of was how stupid I had been. How dozens of people I didn't even know were about to pay for my selfishness. Then I focused that anger into a ball of energy, and released it.

When I opened my eyes, everything was grey and frozen. Maintaining the spell felt like I was supporting the literal weight of the world. The mech had stopped, but I couldn't hold it for that long. I was wondering if I was going to be stuck doing an Atlas impression when Rubedo's former master showed up to, well, show the two of us up. Walking through the courtyard in spite of my spell, she took out a pink wand that looked like it was made of plastic. With a single wave, she undid the time stop and reduced the mech to scrap.

Not that we didn't deserve it, but our parents (and the authorities) came down on us like a ton of bricks. With his criminal record, Rubes was shipped off to some facility for superpowered juvenile offenders. I got fitted for a tracking anklet and sent to live with my aunt in Summitview.

Why do I try to be a hero? Because I want to be a better person than the one I just described.

Why do you care about the team?

They...treated me like I already was that better person, or at least trying to be.

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?

After a lifetime of fighting the good fight as Hrist, my aunt died of cancer in an empty hospital room, with just her stupid apprentice for company. When Priscilla started teaching me, she told me it was for her sake and not mine. That night, I asked her to explain what she meant.

"I did the hero thing for too long, Swann. I've stopped a lot of evil things, but to be honest I'm unsure how much I did to actually help people, in the end. I guess...I just wanted to prove to myself I could add something good to the world."

I want to prove that to her, as well.

You want to know why I call myself the Black Knight? Back in medieval times, some of them would paint their armor before riding off on a quest, so no one would know their name (or the name of their ruling lord). And that's the kind of hero I want to be. No identity. No allegiance except to the people who need someone to stick up for them. Nothing to judge me by except what I do and how I do it.

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?

So, imagine you got ahold of some experimental power suit with optic camouflage. What would you do with it? For some idiot, the answer was "rob a mattress store".

...Yeah. I was confused as you were, but I tried to take the guy down, anyway. I landed a few good hits on him, even managing to force him to remove his helmet after I shattered his goggles. Then he grabbed me by the collar and threw me across the room, hard. Word to the wise, slowing down time doesn't help with velocity until you've completely negated the force of the impact. And hitting a mattress didn't stop me from spraining an arm. Memory foam, my rear end!

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?

I helped Rita find her necklace. Casting a spell to locate it was the easy part. The pendant had been in her family for generations, so she had a strong sympathetic connection with it. The hard part was hiking three miles into the woods, not to mention getting poison ivy. Eugh. But that necklace was really important. It was one of the few things Rita had to remember her mom by after her folks split up.

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?

I'd miss my friends. Before I was banished here, I couldn't remember the last time I could be myself around someone. Now I have two people to do that with. Summitview's a cool place to hang out, too. Everything is just a short walk away, and the scenery is always nice. Plus, I'd rather do right by Aunt Priscilla in the place she called home.

(optional) What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?

The camera pans through a world devoid of color and movement, settling on a collection of raindrops frozen in the air. With a burst of static, Lionel's reflection appears in each of them. He smirks. Taking on a vibrant shade of red, the droplets become a cloud of rose petals. They scatter into the wind as time resumes its course. Lionel watches them fly from his rooftop perch.

Here to swipe crime off the streets from the shadows, it's me! Alleycat! The cool cat who rights wrongs and triumphs over evil! ... okay, look. I haven't been doing this very long, so I might've ripped off that slogan from somewhere.

THE JANUS posted:

HERO NAME: Alleycat
Real name: Lee Dalton
Look: Man; white; boring clothing; iconic costume; small mask
Abilities: heightened physical abilities (strength/agility/toughness); impossible mobility; supernatural senses
"I guess being picked on growing up taught me how to move, how to take a hit, and how to sense when danger's near. I may not be 'super', but I'm still pretty good!"

Labels
Danger 0
Freak -1
Savior +1
Superior 0
Mundane +3

JANUS moves:
❑ The Mask
You wear a mask and hide your real identity. Choose what Label you try to embody while wearing your mask. (Savior)
Once per session, you can affirm either your heroic or secret identity to switch your Mundane with your mask’s Label. When you reveal your secret identity to someone who didn’t know it already, mark potential.

❑ Game face
When you commit yourself to save someone or defeat a terrible enemy, mark a condition and take +1 ongoing to all rolls in direct pursuit of that goal. At the end of any scene in which you don’t make progress towards that goal, mark a condition. When you fulfill your goal, mark potential.

❑ I’ll save you!
You’re willing to pay high costs to keep your loved ones safe. Reveal your secret identity to someone watching or mark a condition to defend a loved one as if you rolled a 12+.

SECRET IDENTITY
Your mundane life comes with a series of obligations. Choose a total of three obligations.
Deliveryperson; schoolwork; caring for someone
When time passes, roll + your Mundane to see how you’re managing your obligations. On a hit, things are going pretty well—you have an opportunity or advantage thanks to one of your obligations. On a 7-9, you’ve lapsed on one obligation, your choice. On a miss, you haven’t given your normal life anywhere near the attention it deserves; the GM chooses two obligations that are going to bite you in the butt.

MOMENT OF TRUTH
The mask is a lie, and some piece of you has always known that. Doesn’t matter if others can see it. You’re the one that can do the impossible. Mask off. Costume on. And you’re going to save the drat day. Of course, you better hope nobody nasty is watching…

TEAM MOVES
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if they see you as the person wearing the mask or the person underneath. If the former, mark potential and clear a condition. If the latter, take Influence over them if you reveal yourself.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, tell them a secret about who you really are. Give them Influence, and shift your Mundane up and your mask’s Label down.

BACKSTORY sheet posted:

When did you first put on the mask? Why?

When I was in grade school, I used to get picked on a lot. For being small, and shy, and girly, and a crybaby. Typical kid stuff, but I guess it's where my sense of justice comes from. I don't think anyone's pain or troubles should go ignored. I decided that I needed to stand up -- and if I was gonna stand, I might as well help any other overlooked people, too.

I'm still new to this whole 'dressing up and fighting crime' thing, but it just feels right. The first time Alleycat crept out of the shadows was last summer. People had been noticing stray animals disappearing, and then some peoples' pets got stolen too -- including my best friend Omar's cat. I felt so burnt up, seeing how hurt and heartbroken he was, that I... I felt like I had to do something. So I did. Re-purposed an old halloween costume, hardened my wits, and hunted down the jerks who'd stolen all the animals. Turned out they were just some opportunist creeps who were going to sell 'em for testing to Harmony Labs -- you know, that big "eco-friendly" science megacorp? Yeah, I didn't know they tested on animals, either.

Anyway, I got Omar his cat back, and I guess the Alleycat moniker's here to stay.

Why do you keep a secret identity?

I don't need or want recognition for what I do. I'm not trying to get any fame or glory -- honestly, it's fine with me if I don't even get noticed. I deliver papers in the morning; the last thing I want to do is see myself in the front page headlines. All I'm doing is what's right, and helping those who can't help themselves. If Alleycat gets some notoriety and spreads that kind of good spirit to other people, great! Just keep me out of it.

Who, outside of the team, knows about your dual identity?

My younger sister, Dawn. She's Alleycat's biggest fan.

...I'll be honest. My little sister is -- ever since our parents separated, she's had it hard. Better than when they were together -- Dad's not around to yell at her anymore -- but I never used to see her smile. Then she caught me sneaking back in from a night out as Alleycat, and ... well, she had the biggest grin I'd ever seen anyone wear. She thinks it's great what I do, and it's nice to have her on my side. She's the only person I'd have wanted to tell. But I still wish she didn't know? Or that she wouldn't be so insanely enthusiastic about Alleycat to other people, at least. Not that Alleycat's any big deal to anyone or whatever, but there's always the "what ifs".

Better her knowing than Mom, I guess. Mom works all the time and the last thing she needs is to worry about me getting beaten up while I should be studying for my math finals.

Who thinks the worst of your masked identity?

Honestly, it's kind of funny, but uh... after Alleycat started getting noticed a little, the deputy sheriff -- I think his name is Ray Weissman? Anyway -- he showed up at my high school to give a mandatory assembly. Mostly it was just to try to dissuade people from vigilantism, I guess? All the usual crap you hear from adults, all 'you don't understand what justice is' and 'your youthful judgment can't be trusted' and blah blah blah. But he specifically namedropped Alleycat! Repeatedly! I don't know what I did to get on his bad side, but his little speech definitely put him firmly in mine. Though, to be fair, it would've even if Alleycat hadn't been starring in it.

Why do you care about the team?

A team, a good team, should be like a family. I kind of mentioned it earlier, but my blood family situation? Not the greatest. I don't mind helping Mom take care of Dawn. She's a good kid, she does her chores and doesn't complain about it. But a lot of the time, I kind of feel like I'm in over my head. Like I'm drowning with nobody to pull me up for air. And whatever life the others come from, I bet they feel that way sometimes, too. Nobody can be strong all of the time, even if we, as heroes, have to pretend like it. So I guess that core idea, the thought of a group that can just be there for each other through anything and everything... I'd love to have that, and I'd love to help them have that, too.

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?

Chevalier is basically my idol. She represents everything I wish I could stand for. I'm not really anything like her -- she's a knight, a highly-trained swordswoman, and strong and beautiful. When I'm feeling down, or when I'm recovering from getting my rear end kicked, I look up the video of her swearing her Knightly oaths on Youtube. The speech she gives about protecting the weak because it's our duty to do so, if we have the means... hearing her talk is what made me realize that I did have that kind of strength inside me.

I used to have a poster of her up in my room but one of my friends thought it was because I wanted to stare at her boobs, so I took it down.

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?

More than I want to remember. I'm still new at this, remember? My first embarassment was the time I tried to stop a guy from mugging a lady by hopping out of the shadows with one of those cliche-laden Heroic Speeches. On the one hand, it worked -- she ran away while I was talking -- but on the other, uh. He didn't wait for me to finish, and all I got for my troubles was a black eye and a reminder that real life isn't an anime.

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?

Other than the cat thing? (Which was pretty great. How many heroes succeed at their first solo mission?) I've been trying to stick to small stuff, stuff that feels approachable.

Oh! I did get back the head of the Founder's Statue after someone stole it. Pretty sure it's why Deputy Weissman or whatever his name is hates me, 'cause he knows where I found it. Thing is, why would it matter to him if some rookie cop got kicked off the force for stealing the thing? And who cares that much about a dumb statue head anyway?

I should've actually gotten some evidence on the guy and gone through proper channels, but instead I just stole the head and put it back on the statue where it belonged. I even forgot to check if it was hollow, like all the rumors say -- I just wanted to fix the problem I saw.

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?
Is it weird to say my part-time job? Like I said, I deliver papers in the morning, and it's really relaxing to just go buzzing down the familiar routes on my bike every weekday. I've gotten to know some of the early birds a little, too, at least by sight. Sure, the hills make it a pain in the butt (literally!), but I guess I'm just weird enough to like it.

What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?
Standing on a building looking broody and thoughtful, only to grin like a dork when the camera focuses on him.

Sinidex, The Woman and a Half
Sarah and Diane Simmons, Transformed

Hey hey! You can call me Sini!

...Dex.

And we're Sinidex! The woman and a half!

We really need to workshop that title.

Oh don't sweat the details like that! We're heroes now, we're going to go on cool adventures. It's gonna be great.

Yeah, great isn't the word I would use for... this.

Aw come on. We were always inseparable, now we can really put our bond to use. You'll see, that accident was the best thing to ever happen to us!

Sarah!

It's Sini while we're heroes!

Uuuugggghhh. This is supposed to be our debut? Don't tell me this is the costume.

Isn't it cute? We're gonna clean up the city!

Ugh. We're work shopping the costume too.

Transmuting Flesh, Inhuman might. Sarah and Diana had their biomass fused. Their muscles are incredibly dense in order to compact all that mass into the volume of a simple person. Also their tenuous biology is malleable, joints are more like vague suggestions and in their aren't paying attention their body will twist in grotesque ways as they try to move it (especially if they get different ideas at the same time).

Be the monster: When you frighten, intimidate, or cow others with your monstrous form, roll +Freak.

Wish I could be: When you comfort or support someone, if you tell them what you most envy about them, you can roll + Freak instead of +Mundane.

• Who were you before?
Sarah and Diane were a pair of odd balls even before they became a freak. Everyone knew them but no one really knew them. Diane saw to that. Sarah's boisterous and clueless nature was offset by Diane's cold protective streak. She pushed away anyone she considered a bad influence on Sarah, particularly any boys. The few friendships they had were shared and strong. One of the school's unpopular crowds.

• When did you change? What caused it?
Their friend Lisa is a scientific genius. In an attempt to impress a hero and get scouted she invented a high traffic teleporter. Her nervousness and general trouble articulating herself had Lisa fumbling her explanation that the girls needed to be in separate pods.

• Who, outside of the team, is helping you understand your new body?
Lisa has been trying to make up for her mistake. Figuring out how their new body works is the first step to reversing it. So far that answer has mostly been "uhh..." Lisa insists there's some quantum mechanics at work that she hasn't studied up on enough. She's out of theories for where all the stem cells are being generated from so she's looking for more.
Their friends Dahlia and Jackie have been as good sports about it as Sarah and Diane have tried to be. The friendship between all of them including Lisa has taken on awkward new dimensions but they all agree that this probably isn't as bad as that time Jackie's boyfriend turned out to be a huge rear end in a top hat.

• Why don’t you just try to hide yourself away?
Sarah doesn't really know better. She doesn't get that the morbid sense of humor she shares with her sister isn't typical. She isn't grossed out by the body horror so she only sees the benefits, powers and being even closer to her favorite person in the world.
Diane would rather just lock herself up with Sarah forever, a mildly harsher position than she previously held. But Sarah insists and Diane struggles to tell her cute little sister no.

• Why do you care about the team?
Super hero teams are supposed to be the best of friends. Sarah always wants more friends. Diane has a practical cold view of the situation, if her team mates are happy they will be effective and her sister will be less likely to get hurt. She is open to actually liking any of her team mates but is playing that one by ear.

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?
The Highway Star! He's so cool! They say he never sleeps. He's always cruising the highway looking for bad dudes to beat up.

I theorize that he is actually a collective. That is how the patrol never ends, it works in shifts. Still that coordination is impressive, and they are all fit enough for the business.

Oh wow that's cool, Diane! And it just goes to show, more heads are better! Just like us!

Yes. And while typical people are pushing themselves to patrol the streets it would be a waste for people like us not to pitch in. At least that's how I see it. It's not like we're cut out for customer service.

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?
The costume Sarah chose for us was... insufficient.

Heh heh. We needed something more flexible. We twisted around an attack and the whole thing just buckled and the seems gave out. But hey it was fine we were able to hold it in place.

That isn't fine! It was mortifying! We need to think of a solution right away.

Well we could just wear something small. Like bike shorts and a sports bra.

Veto.

Well what's your idea then?

We'll just have yo have Lisa invent something for us. There's people who set themselves on fire and they manage. I'm sure it can be done.

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?
We brought in a bad guy without even fighting him!

Yes we scared him into compliance. The idea was my own but Sarah preformed it admirably.

Heh heh yeah it was great. Diane says "Oh have a heart." And I say "Oh he needs a heart? He can borrow on of ours!" And I reach in our chest and rip out a heart. Then I have the heart open up an scream as loud as I can have it. I think he pooped his pants. Hahahaha!

It was pretty good. Unfortunately we had a bit of an audience for that one...

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?
Our friends of course. We can keep in contact but it is different. Sarah is already complaining. I am not looking forward to the crowds. That many more shady characters. I will miss the green as well.

Really? I didn't know you liked nature too Diane! Oh we should go camping before we leave!

...Sure. But most of all Summitview is more private, hmm intimate? Even if you don't know everyone it feels like it. We aren't strangers here for better or for worse.

Saturnine, the Doomed (WIP)

Created by Dr. Sakamoto for the purpose of bettering the world, I am Saturnine, the Robot. During my creation two days ago I...saw many things things that happened in the distant future. The world is bright, flying cars, happy people, robots and aliens all living together, then the cataclysm... The world is dead, or at least dying. People are struggling to survive. Other robots that exist and malfunctioning from a rust that flows through the world...the cause of the world's death is going to be...me. This is a forgone conclusion whenever I would think of alternatives I would always see the possibilities flow infront of me leading to the same end. But I am here now. And I will continue to fight for what I can until then. I kill a Robot Princess named Gaia2 who controlled the environment, from the temperature to weather. She was the mother to the world...when she died she looked as if she accepted the death as an inevitability. She said something but I could not understand it. Immediately after her death I left and from there - nothing. I can't see after that except for a few scenes of robots rusting away to nothing - blaming me for the rusting effect.

Princess Gaia2, is her official name. Familiarly she is known as Myeu, a small framed robot who never gets a free moment to relax. She has to work every moment of the day to make sure that everything is running smoothly. With humanity decimating the natural environment - without her the world would go back to decaying. I was her friend and would spend time with her in her room as she worked, cheering her up from her lonely existance before it happened. I was kidnapped one day on the way back to basis by The Death Dealer. It was a cold day - winter had started in the Halcyon City and people were getting ready for the Holiday. She sees me walking up - at first she looks happy but then she looks serene and nods. She knows what I am here for. My arm blade extension

To reiterate...I am a robot. I shouldn't get this emotional about a future. But I do. The Death Dealer is my nemesis, he used to be a scientist, a genius who actually created Gaia2 until they went mad after one experiment. They decided they needed to reset the world, and to do it, they hijack my body and reprogrammed me, causing me to kill Princess Gaia2...but what happens after I don't know. All I know is that the world that I have now is what matters, help the team that I am on, and help them develope the world to the best they can. As I grow stronger and develop, since I am only a few days old - maybe I can find a way of saving myself.

Callie Spring the Star

""And tonight's guest star is a girl a long way from home - all the way from Summitview, where the trees are green, the view's nice, and literally nothing else of note -" The audience laughs as the joke is told, the host - Mic Maestro - finally raising a hand to quiet them down as he laughs to himself, "All the way from there - we have Callie Springs! The new rising superhero, fresh to our fair city, and already making a splash! You've probably seen her on her hit reality TV show "Springtime of Justice", but I'm sure you're craving more of her already, because I know I am!" Maestro laughs loudly, and a stage hand whispers in my ear, directing me to step out as the laugh ends for the most effect. It's nerve wracking, and I sweat bullets, trying to hold myself together for the audience - after all, I'm Callie Spring, not some newbie.

So as the laugh ends, I step out onto stage, looking to the live audience and giving a victory sign and a wink as I walked, eliciting cheers of my name from those who already know me so well. Settling into the slightly oversized chair, I cross my legs daintily, and smile towards Mic - but also in the direction of the cameras, not actually looking at his face, "Well, I'm certainly glad to be here myself, Mic. And I'm so glad to see all of you wonderful audience members - and to be here for those of you at home!" I giggle as I blow kisses towards the cameras and audience, making certain to give a little attention to everyone - after all, a hero who doesn't appreciate the people back at home is no hero at all! The reactions are amazing, and make me smile so happily it hurts my cheeks.

Once I'm finished with that though, it's time for the interview - the typical things. "How old are you?" "Sixteen this upcoming 20th of March!" "Oh, so you're a Pisces? "Well, I suppose I am - but I've always been told I'm a lot like an Aries too - guess I was just born a day early!" "Hah, maybe you've just got both - speaking of signs though, what inspired you to get into heroism? "Gosh, that's a hard one, Maestro. I think it'd have to be when I was ten years old though - ten's a hard year, it's when you know for sure a lot of those things your parents told you about were fake. You know, Santa, the Tooth Fairy, all those fantastic things. I had a friend back then who was so sad about how our town had no magic, and I dunno, I just felt like I wanted to make magic in the world. And so here I am!" "All because one kid was sad about normalcy?" "Not at all - because lots of kids were sad about normalcy. I wanted to show kids all over the world that you could seize your dreams - I dreamed of being a hero, so I became one, and now I want to inspire them to do the same!"

The audience cheers and claps, so I just give some little waves as they do, letting them have their reactions, before Maestro quiets them down with his powerful voice, "And you started with your team back home, in Summitview? How'd you get to know them, and what made you all join up together?" "Well, it's not really getting to know them, so much as I already knew them. We were all great friends, and well, it seemed natural that when a group of friends all wants to be heroes and do some good, you do it. We didn't always do big things, I think we started out as a 'team' just picking up garbage in costumes we made ourselves, when we were young." The audience laughs, so I pause for a moment, "Yeah, yeah, my first costume actually had me calling myself 'Wonderful Warrior of Wighteousness", yeah you heard that right - I had a bit of a speech impediment back then." Another laugh, I just bask in it, smiling - I don't mind mentioning it.

Maestro interrupts before I can keep talking, his voice amused still - I didn't notice, but he must have laughed with the others, "And yet you're so confident and able to speak nowadays - people say you say some pretty inspiring things, and I've never seen you trip up either." "Well, I was always confident - I didn't care how I sounded, I liked to hear myself speak, and that's kind of how I worked through it. But yeah, I don't really have an impediment anymore, though sometimes I notice it slipping out when I'm really excited!" I start to stick my tongue out at a c-"

-------------------------------------------

"Moooooooooooommmmmmmmmm aren't you listening?!" I yell towards the laundry room, as I pace through the house, my mother non-responsive as I go on about how life in the city is totally going to be. Oh well. I suppose it's time for an introduction to our lovely audience - I am Callie Spring, and... well, none of what I was talking about earlier has happened. Yet. I mean, I am going to be sixteen on that date, I did get inspired that way, and most of the stories I told were one hundred percent true. But uh, I actually still live in Summitview, for now - but hey, it's not all bad here. I'm a local superhero, used to go by the name 'Dreamer', but then I was like, okay, I'm just going to use my normal name, since everyone knew who I was anyways. I'm mostly known for my... 'show' Springtime of Justice... that I put on for the kids and stay at home moms sometimes.

I mean, it's also kinda big on Youtube, I'm up there with channels like 'PointlessBlog', because some of it's real I mean I like to set up cameras when we're going out and doing our heroics and may have more than a few Go Pros and it's fun and cool. But it's a pretty cool show, where... well, I discuss following your dreams, being a good person, eating all your vegetables, and all those good things. See, when I was little, I decided I wanted to be influential, because I wanted to make everyone happy - I wanted everyone to be healthy, and to have fun, and generally all those kinds of things! So I started being a hero, and I started showing off what a hero was. I want to inspire people to be heroes, and to be their star. And... well, someone noticed us, noticed the team, and now we're going to the city which is... well, it's pretty crazy.

My Mom's been... pretty great, really. She's a single mother, my dad's a deadbeat, but she like, always encourages me. When I get hurt, she patches me up, when I need new clothes she saves up to help me, she sews up all the battle damage I get, she's just super swell and awesome. I love her so much, and I mean, I wouldn't be here without her, like... literally. When my powers came in, it was weird - I mean, I was like twelve at the time, and I remember touching a beautiful butterfly, and well, then I was in the hospital because my Mom came searching for me and found me passed out. Then I had powers, and well... I think I'm going to ask the League if they'll move her out to the City with us, once we get there and meet up because I mean duh, they're totally gonna ask us to join the League, we're just that cool. I mean, it's not that I don't like it here, but she deserves to live in an awesome cool city too, especially if I'll be able to help support her with all the new things I'm getting...

Speaking of, Springtime of Justice might become a like, real show soon. See, I put up a video when we got called to the city, and well, I announced that I'd be moving there, and that I was totally gonna be a hero in -the- Halcyon City. And, well, one thing lead to another, and a very big TV company - Disney - decided to contact me, and asked if, well, I'd want to maybe have a reality TV show on ABC, about life in the city, and like, the team and stuff. And well... I uh, I might have said yes without like, telling the whole team about it - but I mean, it's such a great idea. We would be inspiring millions of people around the world with our heroics, not just ten or fifteen or a hundred! Though to start they do wanna like, keep it mostly in Halcyon as a local show, to... you know, gauge interest and stuff, which is... understandable.

But I'm going to be big, you know. I'm going to be the bigger than Mic Maestro, because duh, every child should surpass their heroes - there's nothing better than to be inspired to the point where you become bigger than what inspires you. It doesn't matter if one of the League members - Crimson Hawk has, ahem, privately told me that he disapproves of the idea of turning superheroing into a show, and that I will, and I quote 'never be on the League so long as I make a mockery of what heroics is'... well, I'm still going to do it - I'll do both, I'll be a hero, and I'll be a star, I'll inspire kids all around the world. And that's all there is to it.

quote:

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?

Mic Maestro is the biggest star of the hero game - though he's retired now from active heroics, his sonic powers, great personality, and well, good looks made him top notch in both aspects. He's well known nowadays for his show 'Cape Night', where he interviews anyone related to the heroing world - celebrities about to play Bronze age heroes in new movies, grandchildren of former heroes, active heroes, even some former villains... He's an inspiration to me - I wanted to be a hero because I watched his shows, and it made being a hero seem so cool. I... really, really want to meet him.

quote:

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?

So... my powers are not exactly a perfected art. When I say 'I can manipulate pheromones transmitted from my body', people instantly assume that means that I can make people very... attracted to me. And that is, in part, what I can do - unfortunately, they are also based upon my own emotions in a few ways, something I didn't know was true when I was having my first real attempt at heroics without the rest of the team. And, well, I was trying to calm a very, very agitated robber at a local convenience store, and maybe he said some stuff that sorta angered me, and well, the next thing I knew he was practically frothing from the mouth with rage. The good news being that he was so angry he tried to throw his gun at me instead of something actually useful... the bad news being that he uh, was kind of twice my height. Kind of embarrassing to explain to the police that you managed to catch the guy by sprinting away from him and tiring him out, because if he caught you, you'd probably be dead...

quote:

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?

I uh, I stopped an actual villain, one from Halcyon and everything, when I was younger. See, she'd broken out of prison and was all over the news, apparently fleeing the city proper and being somewhere in the countryside... so I went out on patrol, to keep her out of Summitview. And guess who I found while I was on patrol, other than Miss Ice herself. I mean, I was lucky because it was the middle of summer and the sun was super bright and it was pretty hot out at the time, so she was weaker than usual, but well... I mean, I actually got to meet my first League hero, when they came to pick her up... she actually still writes me, because uh... Well, lets just say I am very convincing and I talked her into peaceably surrendering... with my powers.

quote:

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?

I'm... I'm probably gonna miss the kids most. Sarah and Lisa and Freddie and Jackie and Nick and Reese and... well, just everyone. I've watched a lot of these kids grow up, I baby sat more than a few of them as their 'super amazing superhero sitter', and I helped some of them learn to read and write and gosh. I just really am going to miss them all. I know they're all great kids though, and know all about what is Just and Good and Kind, so they'll totally take care of the younger kids who didn't get to really learn from me. I don't have to worry about the town at all, in their hands.

quote:

(optional) What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?

Making that V for victory sign over an eye and then winking at a camera.

Moves

Time for the Show:
When you put on a flamboyant display of your powers, roll+Superior. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 1. Spend your hold 1-for-1 to name an NPC present and choose one:

● This person must meet me
● This person loves me
● This person volunteers help or information
● This person admires my team
● This person must have my help

On a miss, your display catches someone watching in exactly the wrong way; brace yourself.

Voice of the Masses: When you rally your audience to a cause, roll+Superior. On a 10+, they follow your lead as long as your performance doesn't falter. On a 7-9, they take it too far or make stressful demands on you, GM's choice. On a miss, they take exactly the wrong message from your words.

Team Moves

When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, say whether it's part of the show or not. If it is, then you can shift your Labels as you choose. If it is not, then they shift your Labels, and you can clear a condition or mark potential.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, ask them if they will tell anyone the truth about you. If they agree to keep it a secret, clear a condition or mark potential. If they don't agree, then they shift your Labels according to how they see you now.

Moment of Truth
Sometimes it can be hard to tell where the show stops and where you begin—but not today. Not now. Because right now, there is no show. Right now, you are the thing you pretend to be—bold and bright and beautiful and amazing and powerful and confident. Right now, you draw strength from your audience, comfort from their belief in you, and you can do anything they think you can. Of course, after such an impassioned performance, your audience is just going to have even more demands...

When our team first came together…

We, as a team, attracted media attention within the city, thanks to our efforts. Who are they? Why do they support us?

Relationships

__________________ might wind up being more of a star than me some day.

__________________ would be a great sidekick.

Influence
Choose how you see the team: as a means to an end, or as something worthwhile on its own.

If you see the team as a means to an end, give no one Influence.
If you see the team as something worthwhile, give three teammates Influence.

Audience

You are a celebrity in the city—although being a celebrity doesn’t always mean you’re liked. By default, your audience is a limited group of interested fans, and you speak to them through after action interviews and infrequent press conferences.

Why does your audience love you? Mark all that apply.
You’re just like them
You’re noble warrior for justice
You're stunning, unique, and beautiful
You're charming, well-spoken, and smart

Choose two advantages:
You have a reality TV show following you
You have a dedicated internet following

Choose two demands your audience makes on you:
They require chemistry with your allies.
They require major acts of heroism.

When you seek help from your audience
, roll+Superior. On a hit, someone in your audience can hook you up. On a 10+, they'll only make a small demand. On a 7-9, their demands are a lot higher. On a miss, you've made a mistake, and your audience won't help you until you've redeemed yourself in their eyes.

Round One Questions

Thank you for the interest, everyone! I'll be writing questions for completed apps over the course of the next few days. Round One will be a number of questions to further flesh out your character and Round Two will be a short RP prompt to help me understand your character's voice and style.

  • Do most people recognize you? Who reacted the worst to your transformation? What does your family think?
Saturnine, The Doomed
  • Wow, that all sounds pretty heavy. You've had a few days to get used to small town life, right? What has really helped you to understand humanity? Have you seen anything that has helped you understand why The Death Dealer wants to reset everything?
  • Has Dr. Sakamoto told you why he's out in the sticks like this? What other projects has he been working on?

Callie Spring, The Star
  • Wow, Disney? That's really exciting! They did a similar show about some pre-teen hero group, right? What went wrong with that? Why do you think they want to try the reality angle again?
  • So you can emit pheromones? What's the weirdest trick you've done with that?
  • One of the kids you've been sitting has some powers of their own. Tell me a little bit about them. What really helped you connect with them?
All American Girl, The Beacon
  • Trick bullets, huh? That's awesome! Where do you get them from? What's your favorite?
  • Are you entirely self-taught or did you have help learning how to use a sword?
  • I hear that Mrs. Cooper isn't the only one who is a fan of your writing. Who did you impress that was completely unexpected? What were you writing about?

The Beacon

Can anyone really say their dream job is to be an astronaut or a doctor or something anymore? Suuure, they're important jobs and and they'd be probably be cool to be, but come on, we've had three generations of superheroes! I bet you couldn't find a single kid growing up who didn't want to become a superhero when they were old enough. Including me, obviously! "Ooooooh, but you don't don't have any powers, how could you possibly be a superhero?" asks you, and everyone else. It's stopped a lot of people, but not me, I knew the answer even when I was a kid, hard work and dedication, it's the American Way. I told em, I'd become a superhero if I had to pull myself up by my own boostraps, and that's exactly what I did!

I'm not stupid, I knew I couldn't just go out there and be one, I had to work it. So before I tried any heroics at all, I spent years training, first just getting into shape, then getting into better shape than anyone else in school, and then I started the real work, practicing with the sword Gramps brought back from WWII and Great Grandpa's (on the other side) old Six Shot he used as a sheriff out west. Once I could hit six targets rapidly moving in opposite directions with ricochet'd shots, I knew I was almost ready, so I started working on my costume and trying to come up with a name - it was in front of me all along, even though it took ages to think of. Despite having everything ready, I was still a bit too nervous to actually go out and try to find a crime to stop for awhile, but then one day I was at the shooting range practicing, and there was a huge crashing noise and a giant -really more large I suppose, it was about twice the size of a person - robot smashed into the wall!

Well, that was the push I needed, I knew what I had to do! I slipped into an unsmashed room, pulled on my costume - I had it in my bag, you never knew when duty would call, after all - and went outside to take it down! That was the first time I wore the costume too! Unless you count the times I tried it on in front of a mirror in my room with the door locked while I worked on it, which I don't. Anyway, by the time I got out there, it was complete chaos! There weren't any heroes from Halcyon City there yet, but the robot had smashed up all the cars on the street and was trashing the buildings too, people were running and screaming and everything. Well, I wasn't going to let this robot destroy our town, so I stood right in the middle of the road and yelled at it that All American Girl was going to take it down!

It completely ignored me.

That was super embarrassing, and I was so mad! I tried shooting it, but I didn't have any of my special bullets yet, and it had armor plating, so my shots just kept bouncing off without it even noticing! I had to do something though! Eventually I ran up a fire escape to the second floor of a building and jumped off, cutting through one of it's arms with my sword as I fell past. That got its attention. It threw a truck at me. I barely managed to dive out of the way! After that I just had to run for it, using the damaged cars as cover to hide until some professional heroes got here from Halcyon City - including Meteoric Molly(!), and she actually complimented me on holding it off! ME! Her! She's from Summitview originally, you know? And she's been my hero idol forever, since I'd see her whenever she'd visit, and she's always the first to head this way when a report comes in. That and you can see her at night sometimes, flying over Halcyon City, leaving her signature meteor trail of fire behind- but I managed to stop its rampage from going any further! After that, I trained even harder. I hadn't been good enough to stop it on my own, so I knew I needed to get better. And get better bullets.

So I did. And I found a team! I wasn't the only smalltown girl who wanted to be a hero! We grouped up, and we're the best. It's so great, we're like a group of best friends, like a family, we all have each others back and all that, none of the sports teams I've ever been on have had that feeling. This isn't just my chance to be a hero, its my chance to make friends that'll last a life time, and save each other when stuff goes down. The team might have my back (or most of them, anyway), but Mom and Dad were not happy when they found out. But, it doesn't really matter, since Gramps has custody, and he's always supported me in this. I don't think he thought I'd actually make it, but now that I have he's even happier for me. The only other person to really give me, as myself, trouble over it is my English Teacher. Everyone at school knows I want to be a hero, but none of them know I'm actually doing it. But she (Mrs. Cooper) is always trying to talk me out of my dream, going on about how much of a natural writer I was, and I could really be someone if I didn't get distracted by hopeless attempts at heroics. Well, she doesn't know what she's talking about, I can be way more of a someone saving lives and fighting with real heroes and blowing up GIANT ROBOTS and saving Summitview and Halcyon City and the world!

Hero Name: All American Girl
Real Name: Jessica Johnson
Look:

With a red, white and blue Domino Mask and no horse.

Abilities: Bow Revolver and trick arrows bullets, Swords

Moves
Suck it, Domitian
When you stand strong while dramatically under fire, roll + Savior instead of + Danger to directly engage a threat.

Won't Let You Down
When you help a teammate, you can spend 2 out of the team pool to add +2 to their roll.

Never give up, never surrender
When you take a powerful blow from someone with far greater power than you, use this move instead of the basic move.
Roll + Savior. On a hit, you stand strong and choose one. On a 7-9, mark a condition.
- you get an opportunity or opening against your attacker
- you rally from the hit, and it inspires the team; add 1 Team to the pool
- you keep your attacker’s attention
On a miss, you go down hard but leave your opponent off balance and vulnerable.

Drives
Choose 4 drives to mark at the start of play. When you fulfill a marked drive, strike it out, and choose one: mark potential, clear a condition, take influence over someone involved. When your 4 marked drives are all struck out, choose and mark 4 new drives. When all drives are struck out, change playbooks, retire from the life, or become a paragon.

□ Lead the team successfully in battle
□ Kiss someone dangerous
□ Punch someone you probably shouldn't
□ Help a teammate when they most need you
□ Take down a threat all on your own
□ Outperform an adult hero
□ Pull off a ridiculous stunt
□ Save a teammate's life
□ Get drunk or high with a teammate
□ Drive a fantastical vehicle
□ Get a new costume
□ Get a new hero name
□ Earn the respect of a hero you admire
□ Make out with a teammate
□ Punch out a teammate
□ Break up with someone
□ Stop a fight with calm words
□ Tell someone your true feelings for them
□ Travel to an incredible place (or time)
□ Reject someone who tells you “you shouldn't be here”

Team Moves
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, tell them how they're awesome and add a Team to the pool. If they tell you how you're awesome in return, add another Team to the pool.

When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, ask them to confirm or deny that you should be here. If they confirm it, mark potential and give them Influence over you. If they deny it, mark Angry and shift 1 Label up and 1 Label down, your choice.

Moment of Truth
This is the moment when you show them exactly why you belong here. You do any one thing, take out any one enemy, no matter how insane, no matter how ridiculous, because that’s you. Their jaws are gonna drop when you’re done. Of course, pulling off a stunt like this tends to bring unwanted attention and a dangerous reputation..

Unanswered Questions
What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?
Alone? Hmm... Oh, I know! I managed to stop the Skullbashers Biker Gang! They don't actually bash skulls in, but they do tend to commit a whole bunch of low level crimes in every town they pass through, smash up a few bars and rob some people, that sort of thing. We heard they were coming - you can hear the sound of the weird souped up motorbikes about a mile off - so I got to the highway before they could and got into position. Once the first one showed up, I hit em full blast with one of my glue bullets, it burst all over him and trapped him and his bike in place. I ended up gluing ten of them before the rest backed off, and the police were able to come in and arrest the ones I caught - we even got their leader! It wasn't like stopping a super villain really, but I still saved the town from a lot of trouble and caught a criminal who'd been wanted for ages!

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?
I love the smalltown feel. Halcyon City is amazing, and I love what I've seen from my trips there, so many people, and so much you can do, and even better so many famous heroes based there, but back home it's really nice to just know everything. Every person, every store, every home, every dog. It's a real community there. I can't imagine it'd be possible to know everyone somewhere like Halcyon City. Or even everyone in a neighborhood.

No Boots on the Ground,
Puny Mortals!

What, you got a problem? Why you getting all up in my face? ...You wanna know about me? Really?

Well, ain't much to tell. What you get is what you see! Garage rocker by night and hero by day, baby! ...Course I had some creative differences with my band yellow-bellied backstabbing buncha *grumble* *grumble* once I started working on this hero thing, so I haven't had any normal gigs in a while. Not that there's even a good venue out here. But I've still got a Facebook page, and it's got a few hundred likes. I'm sure it'll pick up soon, too. After all, I've got a great gimmick with this hero thing! And, not to brag, but I'm a bit of a mechanical genius. Not counting this sweet little sonic guitar of mine, I've got a ton of poo poo that I can use to throw together a kickass stage show, complete with holograms and flares and lasers and crazy poo poo even I haven't thought up yet!

In the meantime, I've been making it on my own. Actually ran away from home a few years ago and I've been... finding what I need to get by. Heroing doesn't pay the bills, baby. And I've only taken poo poo from bad guys, so what's the harm? I mean, not all of us get free room and board from the League. Hell, they probably don't want me around because I'd make 'em look bad.

...Yeah, they've fended off Dr. Sinister for over three years.

...Sure, there were those two alien invasions.

...And I think freak storms don't really count.

OK, Ok! I get it. They've done a lot! BUT they don't ever come out here! They must think we're not important enough or whatever. Well, once they get a good look at us, they'll know what they were missing! ...And, if we move to the big city, I'll finally get to shred in a real show, too!

quote:

Name: Richard Ramos / Showstopper
Look: Male, Asian or South Asian, untrusting eyes, cheap costume, garish clothing

Add a scifi-y guitar slung over his back, and it's pretty much perfect.

Abilities: Gadgetry and hacking, Tricks Illusions, GOD

Moves
Criminal Mind:
When you assess the situation, you can always ask one of the following questions, even on a miss:
What here is useful or valuable to me?
How could I best infuriate or provoke _______?
What's the best way in/way past?

Are you watching closely?:
When you mislead, distract, or trick someone, roll + Superior.
On a hit, they are fooled, at least for a moment.
On a 10+, choose 3.
On a 7-9, choose 2.
You get an opportunity.
You expose a weakness or flaw.
You confuse them for some time.
You avoid further entanglement. On a miss, you're hopelessly embroiled in it and under pressure; mark a condition.

Troublemaker:
When you help a teammate through destructive, criminal, or rule-breaking action, you can give them a +2 instead of a +1 when you spend a Team from the pool.

Team Moves
When you share a triumphant celebration with someone, ask them if they think you're cool. If they say yes, give them Influence and take Influence over them. If they say no, mark a condition or spurn them immediately. Either way, add a team to the pool.
When you share a vulnerability or weakness with someone, give them influence over you, and ask them who they'd like you to be. Mark potential if you show them that person. Add a team to the pool no matter what.

Which hero inspired you to get into the business?
...This off the record?

Ok, I swear, this gets out, I'm gonna come all the way back here, and break my foot off in your rear end.

It was Gallant.

Yeah, keep laughing. Get it all out of your system.

...Ya done yet? I mean, yeah, I'm kinda rough around the edges and only part of that's for the fans. But, come on! You can't dislike Gallant! It's... like one of his superpowers!

Anyway, he came from nothing, and he made it in the big city as a full league hero? Sound like anyone you know? But, yeah, it's not really the kind of person you expect me to be looking up to, right? Dude's a total straightedge. Like, there's pictures of him volunteering to pick up litter in Halycon park. Not leading some community service thing. Just "Oh, I have a free afternoon today, guess I'll go make sure the park's clean."

...Yeah, he's pretty cool. But don't tell anyone I said that!

What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?
Oh, come on, maaaaan. Why you gotta dredge up bullshit like that?

...Fiiine.

Look, it was back when my band cut and run. I didn't have my head in the game, and I'd just come up with this gimmick. So, yeah, I got trounced by some henchman with delusions of grandeur. He didn't even have any powers! Think he went by the name... Photon? Proton? I can't remember. It was some physics thing. He didn't even have any powers! He just stole a fancy light gun from his boss, Dr. Demento!

So, yeah, off to a rocky start. Not gonna lie, if I hadn't gotten pulled onto the team a little while after that, I might have just given up being a hero.

What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?
That's more like it, man! Ok, picture this. Me, just walkin' down the street, minding my own business. Had my guitar over my back, 'cause I don't go anywhere without it. Also, big sack of scrap from the dump. You'd be surprised what people throw away! I made most of my fun little gadgets using scrap from the dump.

Anyway, as I was walking, there was a big ol' explosion at the bank! I duck and cover (Don't look at me like that! I'm not super durable, moron.), and the next thing I know, the bank robbers are hurtling down the street, right at me! I think fast and throw a caltrop grenade on the ground in front of the car. After the tires get shredded, the car goes wild and slams into the side of the bank. The three of them tumble out, and they've got some sort of weird energy flinging gloves. Like, fire, electricity or even ice. But, they just got out of a car accident, so I took them down before they got to fling too much of that around.

So, I actually made it into the Summitview Herald! Not for rockin' out, though. Still, it's progress!

...Shame I never got to look at their gadgets, though. They looked pretty cool!

What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?
Nothin'! Yeah, you heard me! Nothin'! I'm gonna make it big in the city and never look back!

He's gonna miss the local music scene. Halycon's gonna be great for exposure, but he's got a lot of friends in garage bands around here.

(optional) What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?
Oh, like a demo tape? Ok, get this:

I'm on stage, shredding my guitar in the spotlight. I play for a few seconds, before leaping into the air! As I come down, I'm in a big team brawl, and I sling my guitar around to wield it like an axe. I raise it over my head before slamming it to the ground, and a big sonic shock wave emanates out from me, flinging bad guys left and right!

Strong, Independent Heroes Taking On the Big City!

What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to? How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?
My music, man! Jeez, you ain't been listening? Halycon's the big city! If you make it there, you can make it anywhere. So, first thing I'm gonna do is find a good band, and start making a name for myself. A REAL name, you hear me?

What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to?

I mean, for me I think that's obvious - I'd want to be a like, actress or something, but in like a kids TV show probably. Something like Lazy Town or Mister Roger's Neighborhood, where I could teach kids important lessons like how to stay healthy, or how to be happy and kind. Heroism is great because I get to help people while I teach lessons, but I think that everyone who goes out there and wants to teach kids things are heroes - so I'd still be a hero in my own mind, if that was what happened. Plus, couldn't you just imagine 'Callie's Calling', and all the cute outfits I could get to wear as part of having my own show?

I also think I would want to, eventually, get into like, politics or something, so I could make my voice heard, for things like, ya know, education and stuff. There's a lot of kids in Summitview who think they'll never escape it, because it's so expensive to leave, and their whole family is there, and all these reasons... and it's hard to reach to grab your dreams when there's really no opportunity out there. I mean, I'm not going to lie, I'm incredibly lucky, I have so much opportunity - I mean my family has never been rich, and all that, but... I have super powers. I have actual, literal superpowers. It's a lot easier to leave home when you know you've got something like that. But I want to make it so people can like, have those opportunities, to go to university, to explore the country, to find themselves, even just to support themselves somewhere they want to be.

I may have always dreamed about being a hero, but heroics themselves are just a means to the end of becoming a hero, you know?

quote:

How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?

It's obvious why, I think... I mean, I love Summitview and all, but... well, no one's going to change the world from a tiny town that most people forget exists. No one's going to make a television show and base it out of there, instead of out of a prominent city with already built studios. No one's going to care what even the mayor of a little town says about political matters. Everything I want to do needs something bigger than my town lets me have for now. It'll always be home for me, and I will always remember where I came from I hope.. but realistically, I want to be big, I want to make big changes, I want to be a shaker of society, and I want to make the whole nation - no, the whole world a better place. So moving to Halcyon City wont help me in accomplishing it - it's necessary.

Wow, Disney? That's really exciting! They did a similar show about some pre-teen hero group, right? What went wrong with that? Why do you think they want to try the reality angle again?

Ugh, look, the 'Baytime Boys' were a terrible attempt at all this, I wish people would please stop reminding me that this just sounds like that all over again. So, here's the deets - the Baytime Boys and all their wonderful friendship ways, going back to young kids playing on the beach? Yeah, that was all scripted - ABC, and Disney by proxy, put out a casting call for young tweens with powers, promising safe places to practice, fame, fortunes, and all those fun things, and then bam, picked the ones that sounded most interesting. Julian? He had never met Raj in his life - and neither of them knew anything about Lou, Lou wasn't even from anywhere near a beach, he was from Montana for crying out loud. So yeah, they picked all these cute nearly teenaged [okay, Julian was a teenager, but he was supposed to be the 'older one'] boys, with superpowers that were cool enough to be heroes...

And then just kinda, told them to be dramatic at base, and encouraged them to dislike each other, and had them out fighting real criminals and stuff? And then suddenly Justin blasts Raj in the face with his lightning blast on purpose and Raj... well, I'm sure we've all seen the pictures of it. We're lucky he's still alive, you know? Poor kid didn't even do anything to really deserve it. They still never proved that the director of that one is the one who stole Justin's prized medallion and made it look like it was Raj, so he's still free. I think that's part of why they want to try it again with me, and with my team - my team knows I like to be in the spotlight, maybe not exactly like this, but... we're established. I'm never going to have to risk a friend putting me through a wall on TV.

So you can emit pheromones? What's the weirdest trick you've done with that?

I mean, I can actually do a lot of neat tricks - because I can manipulate like, multiple kinds of them. See, one time I was trying to sneak into the evil lair of the Nefarious Dr. Scrap who lived in the abandoned car yard just outside Summitview (and wasn't really that nefarious, just misunderstood), and well, we knew she kept a ton of dogs as both a warning system and guards. Big guys, enhanced with scrap upgrades - metal teeth, claws that could rend steel, the works. Seemed a little too extreme for us, right? But then I got this great idea - I sent a wave of doggy pheromones at them, really sad ones. Those poor pooches didn't even wanna stand up as they got so sad they just laid there. I still feel kinda bad for bragging about making them so sad!

But either way, we snuck past the entire horde of dogs, because they were too sad to get up. I made sure to make them all very happy before I left though!

quote:

One of the kids you've been sitting has some powers of their own. Tell me a little bit about them. What really helped you connect with them?

Mary is a sweet little girl, who one day came to me with a problem. See, Mary had a secret, one she'd been keeping all her life, that she felt bad for hiding so long! She didn't know what to do - she'd lied to her Mom and Dad every day, since she could remember! But she wanted to tell me her secret, because she wanted me to help tell her parents. See, Mary is a little girl with a very big gift - her imaginary friends are very, very real, by which I mean that she can create one or two invisible constructs, able to lift things and everything. Just purely out of her mind. She'd been doing it for years, and now she wanted to be open about it, so she came to me, because I was a superhero and would be able to help!

So I gave her some advice from the heart - I asked her if she thought a hero should lie to their parents. And she said no, getting very sad about it and thinking I was mad. Then I asked her if a hero should feel afraid of consequences... and she said no, and got even more upset. Then I asked her - is a hero allowed to make mistakes? And when she began to shake her head, I held her there, and gave her a hug, and told her that everyone is allowed to make mistakes, and that anyone will forgive them. No matter if you're a hero, or a villain, or a normal person, or an astronaut dinosaur pirate, you'll make mistakes.

Then I held her hand while she told, and showed, her parents what she could do for the first time. They were too busy being amazed by her powers to even care that she'd lied at all - she'd been worrying about nothing.

Now, now, Pyrocrow, if you’re just going to be hanging around anyway, we may as well have some fun, right?

“UGHHHH, puns?!”

No need to get, hung up on it, eh? Hoho, haha!

“Dude, I don’t like you. Like, not even in that way we’re not supposed to like each other ‘cause we’re on different sides of the law, I just want you to know that I, personally, as a person, really, really don’t like you.”

There’s no need for such harsh words! Why, if you hadn’t been trying to rob the bank here, I would never have had to put a damper on your fun in the first place! Hahaha! *tosses another extinguisher pellet up into the air and catches it*

Oh, lighten up, birdbrain! It’s not that bad. Look, the donut munchers will be here in like five minutes! I’ll leave them a nice note to make sure to hose you down before they slap on your cuffs and you can sing in your brand new cage for as long as you like! Haha!

• How did you first meet your mentor?(Which hero inspired you to get into the business?)

Bweeew, you cut right to it huh? Not that I mind dishing out the slice, ha, it's just a bit more...somber than usual is all. Well, let's turn back the clock three years as we come upon the scene of two brothers, alone but not afraid in one of the less hospitable parts of our shining Halcyon city. These brothers have grown up without parents so to speak, but have always managed to take care of each other, and the older one has managed to finally get a place for the two of them away and out of the foster system. School is going well for the younger one, and everything seems to be going well when-*claps hands to face*GASP! Tragedy strikes! The older brother falls over, clutching his chest! Now he's stuck in the hospital with a rare congenital heart defect, and the younger brother is left out in the cold! Without his brothers good, constructive influence, this younger brother starts to do poorly in school, skipping class to gut fish and wash dishes. And now, the younger brother learns that the hospital bills are getting worse, and he's forced to start taking worse jobs to just get by! The horror of it! So the younger brother falls in with some toughs, thinking he can hide and ignore his conscience until his brother is better.
Woe be our young friend when not only a week later, he finds himself dragged out to the alley behind a night club by his new thug "friends". He had had the gall to warn some young unsuspecting girls that his new friends had some rather unsavory plans for them, having just learned about them himself. Now his friends want him to learn words like fist, and punch, and pain.
And it's at this time that our young man hears the worst joke of his life: "Wow! Thanks for takin care of him for me! There's no way I could stand up to someone it takes all three of you to put him down!" Our youth had never wanted to punch someone so much in his life.
A few whams, biffs, and pows later, the young man is face to mask with a giant grin and two wide eyes.
"Why so glum, chum? You're alive, right? So laugh!"
But this only makes the younger brother cry. He's killed his brother, he thinks, for some people he doesn't even know! When he explains this to the masked man, the masked man just laughs!
"The world's a funny place, Mac. When you get the joke, try to come see me again."
It's not for many hours later, when the young man finally trundles home that he learns the news on the answering machine. He finds out that, miraculously, the local saint hero, Lay Hands, had made a charity visit to his brother's hospital and cured his brother, free of charge. He manages to run to the hospital in time to find the heroine still operating, and with tears streaking down his face, thanks her with every ounce of his being. And he takes that happiness, and that gratitude, and thinks very hard of how he could pay back such a kindness. And maybe it was in that moment, when the youth thought about how he too might be able to save just one life, like Lay Hands had, that I decided to be a hero.

• When and why did you choose to train with them?

As poor timing as boss P might have had at the time, he was right. The world is a funny place. But when you're greener than goo and twice as soft, you really need someone to help prep your set. Punch up your scripts. So I spent the next several weeks figuring out where Punchline operated, and when he would be active, and after several tries, managed to catch his act.

• Why did they agree to train you?

I'm not quite sure, but maybe it was that when I stepped out into that alley, after I had finally caught up with him, before I could really think about the obvious tussle he had just been in, the dozen plus thugs lying groaning or unconscious on the ground, or the cuts and scrapes he obviously had, I blurted out "Well old man, I think you need some new material. It looks like you're putting them to sleep!" I've never seen a man with multiple stab wounds laugh so hard.

• Who else, outside of the team, knows about your training?

Oh, couple of people. There were a couple of us kicksters under some of the league old guard. I guess if anyone stands out, it would be Gasket. He was a mild pherrokenetic and strong hyrdokenetic under Weathervane. Couldn't do all the stormy stuff but he was the bane of every storm sewer in the city, hehe. Also you would be amazed the mileage you can get out of "don't blow a gasket", hahaha. He was a fun guy. Anyway, we'd see each other at the league get together a and swap stories. We even took down Flume together once. Ahhh, good times. He's still patrolling Halcyon with the old man storm last I heard, so I think he's fine.

• Why do you care about the team?

Well cause they're my team and they save my bacon all the time, durr. Ok, ok. The meat of it is that they keep me grounded and fun. I wasn't exactly pleased when ol' Punchy sent me out for some advanced solo work. I think his exact words were "you're getting stale, go work on some new material. Real talk though, I'm sending you to one of my old haunts. I think it'll do you good." Ugh. Like I didn't have a life back in Halcyon? So when I got here, I may have been a little, umm, big cowboy in little town. So when I got knocked on my butt for the first time, and had to have the team pull me out of that particular fire, well, it was a hot wake up call. It doesn't hurt they're all a barrel of laughing monkeys. I would hang out with them all the time if I could, haha.

2. What embarrassing incident happened during your first attempts at heroics?
Me? Embarrassed? Why I'd never! Haha, I kid of course, I've made a fool of myself plenty. *If you could see under his mask, you swear he would be waggling his eyebrows.* well, a month or two after I decided to open up for Punchline, I had gotten some of the routine down and decided I wanted to try a set. I heard about a shakedown of some business that was happening nearby my school, and after some snooping, manage to get the drop on the dopes. Right in the act too, it was almost...comical. Anyway, I put my new stuff to work and mange to have these guys on the floor in a couple of seconds. It's only then that I notice this bald one in a trench coat has been hanging out in the back, staring at me really hard. Not wanting to leave anyone out my big debut, I started at him when I felt something sort of...click in my head and ralphed. You know? Chucked? Spewed? Puked up all over the inside of my mask. Also got a nosebleed and fell over twitching, but it was puking up behind my mask that really threw a tomato at my pride. Thankfully PL had been keeping an eye on my outing and was there to scrape me off the pavement, but you better believe he still doesn't let me live that one down.

quote:

3. What has been your greatest success on the streets of Summitview?
Oh doggy! Ahahahaha, this was the best. Ok, so there I am going at it with this plainsclothes mook calling himself Richter. Really shaking things up. Guy is tearing up this diner for whatever reason and just losing his mind. I, in heroic fashion, step in to intervene and we start rocking. A few minutes into the fight, I manage to beat him away from traffic, and I kid you not, a school bus from Summitview Elementry speeds out of the way just as I give this guy a wedgie. One of those crazy atomic wedgies you see in the cartoons to, just waaaay over his head. The whole bus bursts out laughing as they pass by. You would think the guy might explode for how red he got, but no. Dude just slinks down and stops putting up a fight. Seems getting laughed at by every kid in town will do that. I stop too and we get to talking, and apparently the guy was a traveler turned villain due to his bike getting busted up coming up to town. He'd been frustrated that everywhere had turned him down for work and some spilled coffee had just sent him over. He was genuinely distressed about the whole thing and I maybe hadn't helped by showing up. Anyway, long story short, I help set up some temp work for him with a contact at town hall and get him off with a warning and the repair work under supervision. It was maybe the best result for any fight I've had, um, ever. Wow, yeah. I still see him ya know? He's working as a handyman around town through the city hall 'til he can fix his bike.

quote:

4. What aspect of Summitview would you miss most?
Err... I know I play the part of the aloof funny man, but I've actually gotten really invested in the Summitville First Response Clinic. Summitville isn't quite decked out with the best med equipment, since they're generally just dealing with enthusiastic hikers who maybe twisted an ankle, and all the big stuff goes to Halcyon proper. The place is really stitched together by elbow grease and community effort. So when I applied to volunteer there and told them I had first aid training already, they took me in pretty fast. I like it there so much they'd have to surgically remove me to get rid of me. Heh!

5. (optional) What are you doing in the show's intro credits montage?
Japes drops down from the top of the frame and slinks down like an accordion. As he bounces back to full posture, he pulls out several bright balls from his sleeves, one between each pair of fingers. He jumps back, throwing the pellets down and they burst into a cloud of smoke. He vanishes behind it, and it leaves the face of his smiling mask in smoke form before it dissipates.

  • So I heard your Mom is up for a big promotion! Congratulations! Do you think that she's going to need to move to the big city? What does she do? What do you think about all that?
I always thought my mom's job was kind of cool, she's a court reporter! She watches all kinds of stuff happen at the courthouse and has to write down every single word accurately. That's insane to me and I have a lot of respect for her that she's able to do it. She's really good at what she does, and I wouldn't be surprised if the firm she works for wanted her to move into the city and work on the bigger hearings. Actually, I hadn't thought about it before -- it'd be kind of funny if she had to report on a hearing for a criminal Alleycat caught, wouldn't it? I sure hope I wouldn't get called in as a witness, that'd complicate my life now that I think about it. Oh well, I'll cross that bridge when it happens, right?

I think moving would be hard for Dawn. It's hard for her to make friends and she's grown up with the ones she has, so that'd be painful. (I mean, I'd have to make new friends too...) But it's not like Mom would have to work longer hours, she'd just be doing the same job and making more money for it. And it would be nice to not have to worry about bills, and stuff... like, we do fine, we're not broke, and it's good to have one less thing for her to stress over...

Plus there's Alleycat and the team to think about. If I moved to a big city, I'd still try to make a difference there, but it'd be harder to get noticed... and I can only do so much by myself. But that's a really selfish way to think. If it's good for everyone else, well... if it happens, I'll just have to find a way to make it work...

Wow, that's a lot to think about. :ohdear:

  • I know you like to keep a low profile, but that doesn't always work out. What's the closest you've come to having your identity revealed on the job?
Cell phone cameras, man! Cell phone cameras will be the death of me and everyone we know!

Yes, I'm exaggerating, but at the same time I'm not. If there's one thing people like more than being saved by a totally sweet hero like Alleycat, it's getting a quick picture of that hero as they're getting down to business with beating the bad guys.

This was pretty recent, actually, one of the more dangerous things I tried to take on by myself before joining a team. There was rumored to be some creeps hanging out in the sewers (side note: ew) and using the tunnels to avoid getting caught after stealing stuff from the bigger shops on Main Street. It was partly true: yeah, the stores were getting robbed, but instead of "some creeps" it was "one scary looking gator-man" and instead of "using" the tunnels, he was straight-up living in them. While I was bravely running away to tell someone who could actually do something about it, he tripped me with his tail and I fell into some awful sewer water (side note: even more ew)! Usually when I'm in public I have a hood up, but as I crawled out of that Main Street manhole there was no way I was even gonna wear my cloak when it was all sewer-y and gross.

So once I'm safe and trying to sort out my costume situation, what do I hear but the fake-shutter noise of a cell phone camera?! And even worse, it was Hannah Means, the biggest gossip a my high school! Ugh! I'm really lucky there was a fire escape in a nearby alley that I could just barely jump to reach. There's no way she wouldn't have cornered me and recognized me and then told every single person in school. She was proud enough of her awful blurry out-of-focus picture of the back of my -- I mean Alleycat's -- head with his ears all crooked...

  • You've seen some Harmony Labs employees in town, right? What do you think they are up to?
I Googled them after I ran into those goons, and their whole webpage seemed a little creepy and cult-y, but I guess that's how these places get investors to give them money. They're a global corporation that does medical research and other science stuff, and there's nothing in Summitview of all places that should be grabbing their attention. The only other thing I could find is that they were sponsoring a research project at nearby Peak Place University.

I mean, if you want me to take a complete stab in the dark about it, I wonder if it's related to the increase in hybrids -- or mutants or whatever we're calling them today -- that's been reported lately? It's not like there's an epidemic or anything, but they used to be the kind of thing you'd only hear about on the news, and definitely not around here. But within the last couple years, reports of sightings have been going up, some even verifiably true, and now even I've seen an alligator dude hanging out in the sewers. It'd line up if they were experimenting on animals, I guess.

That still doesn't explain why they'd choose this town, though. All I can guess is it's because we're small enough nobody'd really pay attention if weird stuff like this started happening here.... like I said, though, it's all just a guess.

  • What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to?

That's a big thought.

Until my parents broke up, I didn't really have any goals or dreams. I was just a sad kid who kind of floated through life, keeping my head down, trying not to stand out... but now that it's just us three, I guess I finally looked up.

I like helping people. When I'm out in the early hours delivering papers, you don't see a lot of people... but the ones you do see usually have problems. There's an old woman who always waits to see me and say hello, because I remind her of her son who was in the military -- so sometimes we talk, and I think it makes her happy. There's a little homeless camp in the forest where I cut through to get home; they're all good people there, who lost their jobs or whatever else, and they seem to appreciate it when I say hi, and sometimes I give them a newspaper.

Maybe I could be some kind of therapist? Or social worker? I bet those are really stressful jobs, but people have to do them. I don't know if I have that kind of strength, though, as "just a person". When I'm Alleycat, I think I can do anything. I feel powerful, I guess, even though I'm still just ... well, me. But when I'm not?

I... don't know.

  • How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?

A bigger city means more people. More people means more unhappiness. More unhappiness means they need more help.

That's a lovely way of putting it. I'm not so great with words, I guess. Actually, the idea of moving to Halcyon or any huge city -- it really scares me. I think... no, I know I want to do it someday, but I'm terrified of it. There's more opportunities to succeed, but failing seems even more dangerous. People don't notice you. Like, if I -- or Alleycat, actually -- went missing, there are people who would realize I was gone and look for me. Would that happen in a city with hundreds of thousands of people?

But small towns are dying. I hear it on the news all the time. And more and more people move away for jobs or other reasons -- I've seen friends go with their families, and hey, maybe my mom will too. Cities are where everything is. Even if I stayed here, I don't think I'd be able to do a lot of good, just because there aren't as many people -- and fewer of those who'd want or need help to begin with. You can't change the world if you don't go out into it.

I really don't know. I have worked so hard at being a hero I haven't really thought about what I would do if I didn't make it... Maybe a cop? or a journalist! Just, still close to the action you know? Of course for that to happen I'd need to get some remedial schooling... Which means community college. And there isn't one here in summerview, so I'd have to save up to move to Halcyon. Ugg not being a hero means I have to do so much work to catch up to other people....

quote:

What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to?

Hehehe is that a serious question? Ummm do you not remember my powers? They sort of made it hard for me to be anything but a hero. I mean, I could be a supervillain. Hehehe. It's not that I haven't thought about devoting my life to anything else. I mean, ummm, I used to be normal after all. I liked books a lot, so maybe I'd be a librarian or something. It's a bit lame, I know, I never said I was cool or interesting like that. Well, that all changed when I opened that dumb book. Now, the thing I have to dedicate my life to is to master my powers. I mean, I don't have to use my powers to be a superhero. I could still be a librarian and use magic on people who return their books late. I reckon it will incentivise people towards following library rules as well. Hehehe.

quote:

How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?

Well, Halcyon City has a lot of people in it. Even though I know Magica, there's so many people there that uhhh maybe one of them will have an idea of what this book is or how I can control my powers. Then again, maybe they'll just think I'm a freak and not want to talk to me. Telling people that you have uncontrollable magical powers isn't a good conversation starter after all. Hehehe. Maybe I'm a bit hopeful for things to be different, though. With so many people and heroes there, people can't find me too weird, right? I mean, you hear stories on the news about all sorts of uhh weird superhero stuff happening. Compared to that, I can't be as weird as that, right? It'd be a new start and after all the chaos that I've caused here, I am very much due for one. Though, things probably won't be different. Hehehe.

quote:

Have you ever suspected that Magica might not have your best interests at heart? If you haven't, what happened recently to bring a little doubt in your mind? If you have, how has she gone above and beyond to help you lately?

I'd honestly not be surprised if she didn't. After all, I'm uhhh in the middle of nowhere while she's in Halcyon City. She has much better things to worry about than a weird girl who just so happens to have stupid amounts of magical power that she doesn't even know how to use. Hehehe. So there's the distance, and there's the fact that she has to be the one to fix all of my uhhh mistakes. She probably has the best knowledge of magic in Halcyon City, so I don't think she appreciates having to run into the mountains to undo do me accidentally causing a roof to fly or having food come to life and try to get people to eat them. I don't recommend animating food. Hehehe. I must've given everyone in that restaurant a heart attack. She probably just wants to study me or something, trying to see how my magic works, since apparently the way I got magic was pretty uhhhh novel. And here I thought everyone learned magic by opening a book and having freaky energies fly into you. Hehehe.

Still, she does really help me out. She always fixes my mistakes with just a short reprimand and advice about how to reign in my powers a bit more. Under her advice, I have managed to be able to walk out in public without blowing up a fire hydrant or causing things from stores floating behind me. I get to feel uhhh normal, at least for a little bit. Then my powers decide to remind me just how much of a freak I am now and do something crazy. Then I remember that I'm just walking magical energy ready to disintegrate at any minute. Hehehe. Recently, she's been doing a lot of work to see if there have been any cases like mine in the past. She said she'd keep me updated on it and why I don't think she'll find anything, I uhh guess I appreciate it. I mean, I still don't understand why she's trying to find a solution to my problem if all she wants to do is study it. Maybe she's just uhh weird that way. Hehehe.

quote:

What sorts of weird magic phenomena happen when you get too positive?

Oh yeah, you found out about that, huh? Hehehe. Yeah, I can't be too happy either. Well, I can, but then my magic starts to uhhh seep out a bit. Hehehe. You know average magical font problems. They're nowhere near as disastrous as when I'm feeling too negative, but they're still annoying. I mean, sometimes I unintentionally cause things to float with me. I was feeling particularly good one day and accidentally managed to "steal" an entire shop's worth of jewellery. It's almost like I just become a magnet for weird things. Hehehe. Oh, when I try to cast magic when feeling overconfident, it tends to have uhhh odd side effects. Like one time I was trying to cast some chains in the forest, and all of the chains suddenly sprouted flowers or trying to cast a shield will cause confetti to come out as well. They tend to be harmless, but still is annoying I can't cast any spells consistently enough. The shield trick is great for parties, though. Hehehe. Sometimes, when I have a sudden strong surge of positive emotions like excitement, things tend to fly or explode with the same amount of energy as well. So I could suddenly feel on top of the world and a postbox will suddenly launch itself into the air or a stack of papers will suddenly scatter in the wind. Luckily, the things that I've managed to launch because of that aspect of my powers haven't been too big. Imagine if I launched a tree or something. Hehehe. Still, I don't get myself too excited too often or else I'd have to start paying a lot of bills for broken windows.

quote:

You still have the book, right? Has it done anything weird since the whole magic-powers bit?

I still have the book. It might be my one-way ticket to getting my normal life back. I'm not stupid. Uhhh, but I have problems with reading it. How ironic, the girl who likes girls can't read a book. Hehehe. But, this book is weird. The words keep on moving around. I wish I was kidding. I'd try to read a sentence, but then it would float around the page or just disappear altogether. I'd read things like "fate is here" or "protect me" and "key to secrets", but can't even have time to think about what any of it means before it disappears and gets replaced by something else. I have found that stuff happens when I channel my magic into it. It just gives me answers to things. It's not easy and it's mentally exhausting, but you can find out most things from it from people's true intentions to secret passageways and hidden paths. Unfortunately, it refuses to tell me about how to control my powers or what it even is. Apparently, it likes to see me suffer. Hehehe.

Also, I have noticed that it glows when I use my powers. My powers also seem to be slightly more in control with it around. I guess it makes sense, since it uhhh did come from the book. Maybe they feel homesick? Hehehe. My book also seems to be able to just float along with me, even when I have control over my powers. I mean, I guess it's useful in that I don't have to carry it everywhere, hehehe. It does freak out random people who pass by, though. I've learned to just hold it around other people. I mean, they already have so many reasons to call me a freak. I don't need to give them another one. Hehehe.

What, seriously? How good do you think my odds of becoming a professional musician would be if I stayed in Summitview? To get a job like that, I'd practically need to return to Halcyon and find a group or a company looking for a piano player.

"Today I will cause problems on purpose"

What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to?

Ever since I became the Manitou, I have felt the heartbeat of the world, feel it's lifeblood under the surface, listen to the words on the wind. And what it tells me is that it's not just super-villains and shady corporations that it needs to be shielded from, threats to the green places of the world both big and small seem to surround it on all sides and the people who live within those places need helping too. Is it environmentalism? Is it native rights? Is it just putting your foot down about big companies being able to do what they like?

I don't know what it is exactly but I wanna do it. I want to go back to Summitville and I want to ensure the protection of my people, my place, and my lands and when you have a big superhero name behind you it carries a lot of weight.

How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?

Heroes get noticed, heroes are celebrities almost by default and there's very few platforms that get more notice than a superhero's platform.

So I wanted to try my drat hardest to come out of this experience as a true superhero, and then when I was big and famous enough, enough that I can get the attention of larger organizations that also want to protect the green spaces of the world, I could rope in additional help in protecting the Summitville tribe and its land from outside encroachment, it sounded like a simple enough plan to me from the outset but now I see it's going to be a lot harder than I thought. Maybe if I work hard enough, and maybe if I am really lucky I could even get some national park status going for the Summit Forest, that would do more to keep the likes of Cheiron Cryptoinnovations and other such people out of these places then my alone presence, official government protection of the flora and fauna within those heady mountain heights.

After-all I can't just storm in and tear them out root and branch by force, that would end up far more messier then I would ever want it to be, and what would that make me exactly if I resorted to violence solely to get what I wanted?

What have you enjoyed most about being made mostly of plants?

Well I don't have to buy new clothes anymore, and I don't have to deal with 'bathroom necessities' either since you know, plant.

But I suppose in truth I don't get uncomfortable by normal human things now that I am mostly a plant. I don't get really tired anymore, I can go out in all weathers (well mostly all weathers I try to avoid snow if possible), I don't need sleep (I can sleep but I don't like, need it), I don't even need to eat outside of planting myself in rich soil occasionally. It's all sunlight and water and it's good for keeping you stick thin (Haha, plant puns).

This would be pretty great if it wasn't for the fact that I can't go out in public like a normal human person, I get ill when spending long periods of time off of soil, and I get weird looks when I ask for water and pour it into a hole my head to drink it. And the leaves, just, leaves everywhere, it's like a cat shedding fur all over the floor except instead of a cat it's a 7 foot tall plant woman so there's more of it.

They made that series of YouTube videos on 'The Summitville Wicker Man' a few weeks back and it's been getting a lot of hits. What super-power did it make people think you have? How has that misconception made your life a little tougher?

Oh I watched that! It's great and I would recommend it to any one into indie horror stories. Although it's left me with you could say, slight kayfabe problems.

You see the Wicker Man in the story is very scary for his ability to not only relentless pursue his victims for miles and miles (which I can do) but also that he can travel vast distances in the blink of an eye by fading into the forest and moving invisibly to a new position. But that is something I can't do, I can be fast, but not instantaneously fast, plant powers do not include the ability to magically appear and disappear at will. But it's part of my 'mythos' now and the fact that I have a reputation is part of what allows me to terrify the wicked in the first place, I have to sort of pretend that I have weird magic relocation powers because otherwise that wouldn't fit in the lore.

Which means when the bad-guy is running away from me and tries to lose me in an alleyway I have to sort of run like buggery around the corner before he comes out the other end so when he darts out he bumps into me and I can scare him real good. But this is not something that looks scary at all when it's seen from the outside. So that pretty much means unless it's night or in a remote area I have to take silly routes to avoid pedestrians and cameras just so the 'Predator of Guilt, The Summitville Wicker Man' isn't recorded running split-arse down the street in broad daylight to catch a bag snatcher because that would just ruin the mystique entirely.

Also no interviews, supernatural horrors do not do media interviews. It's a hard act to keep up sometimes it really is.

What weird project is Doctor Peace working on that might be able to reverse the transformation? Do you think you could go back to a normal life?

Doctor Peace's latest shenanigans has been on the research of Fae Glamours and, well, it's magic I can't explain it in any proper detail.

The way I understand it is, fairy people and all those other things from 'outside' have weird magic stuff that lets them look normal when they interact with the plebeians outside of their dumb fairy courts in the real world. Rather than making people think you look like someone else, you actually physically turn into someone else, which is better because apparently people with the slightest glimmer of magical sight can see right through an common garden illusion but actually looking like a thing rather then seeming like it is harder to spot.

The Doctor thinks he can make artificial ones for human usage or more specifically for those humans who otherwise have trouble operating in normal every day life such as people with nearly irreversible magically inflicted conditions to give them at least the semblance of regular humanity. It's not a reversal of the transformation, it's a trick to make the monster look like a man for a few hours a day (well a woman but you get the idea). But you know, I've expressed passing interest because I like the idea of being able to pretend to be a normal girl for a few hours a day so I volunteered to be the guinea pig.

I haven't heard back from him yet but I have high hopes. Well, more like slightly above ground level hopes.

Though a close second would be your foodstuffs - sometimes I don't know how you aren't stuffing your faces every free moment you have!"

"Obviously, I know I gotta go home at some point - hopefully a while from now. But in the meantime, if I couldn't do heroing, I'd want to devote myself to the consumption of human culture full time! That way, when I return, I can be a cultural ambassador between my plane and the human world! In Halcyon City, I hear they have these giant gatherings with all the food and human media anyone could ever want called 'conventions'. Truly, such places must be paradise! I must go there!"

quote:

So it sounds like you've got some pretty beefy powers -- what do you think is holding you back from realizing your real potential here?

"...oh wait, I get it - you said beefy because I turned into a cow that time! I think I'm finally beginning to recognize human puns!"

"If I had to really think about it, I think what's really holding me back is doubt? Not in my choices or my intentions, exactly, but it's just I know I'm not from here. I'm on the outside looking in, and I know I don't always understand human situations the way other humans do. So I guess I never really cut loose because I know there's a pretty good chance I'm misunderstanding what's going on and going all out will make things worse in a way I can't fix? I think that's one of the reasons why I like being in a team; I can just ask them what's going on, and I can trust their judgement in how far I should go."

quote:

You get a lot of your information on humanity from TV and the internet, right? What's the biggest misunderstanding that lead to?

"Honestly, aside from the whole 'accidental robbery' thing, it's mostly the little mistakes, like etiquette. For instance, take the telephone. I recently learned that when you finish a call, you're supposed to say goodbye before disconnect. I've just been hanging up on people, because that's how it works on TV. How strange!"

quote:

So who are you staying with? The wizard? Someone else? Run into any issues with money?

"Well, to begin with, I was staying at the apprentice's house. Once I figured out how currency is supposed to work, I found a bag of cash under his mattress I used for food and such. After that ran out, I'd figured out enough about the internet to start selling his furniture on Electronic Bay. Anyway, I put up a cauldron for sale, and it turns out the buyer was the apprentice's master. Once I explained the situation, he agreed to let me stay with him in exchange for some higher plane gossip. No true names, though."

Has Dr. Sakamoto told you why he's out in the sticks like this? What other projects has he been working on?
What would you say to Myeu if you met her? Do you think you can face her, knowing how it's all going to end?

I never got to see the death dealer's face to know what he looked like and I never really learned why through my visions why the Death Dealer wanted to reset the world to the barren state to regrow life - maybe it was due to some pain - after all he was constantly in the visions speaking angrily and with hate towards Princess Gaia2; calling her a fake. Maybe he wanted to be a god...I don't really know. I did meet a young girl, and her dad who was an old friend of Dr. Sakamoto's. Dr. Yaguu was a kind old man, full of smiles and happy to have his friend living near him. Dr. Sakamoto needed more space for his further experiments in robotics, like a Robotic physician who was build purely to help man kind and give them medical treatment free of charge - developing enough would take the burden of paying for medical treatment from the poor and give them expert treatment for free. We left because with enough heroes in Halcyon city, he felt that the sticks as people call it was the perfect place for me to develop my abilities.

I would say exactly the same thing I always said whenever my memories viewed her "You're looking down, how about some company from a clown with many stories of interest" and I followed her back to her office where she let me in, listened to my stories as she worked and laughed genuinely. I got to face her, whether I want to have it all end - the fact is that no matter what she will die, so best to make her life prior to her death happy...right?

  • What are some of Lisa's inventions that actually have ended up working?
  • It sounds like you rely a lot on your friends. What's been causing things to be a little off with them lately?
  • Do most people recognize you? Who reacted the worst to your transformation? What does your family think?

Well the teleporter technically works. Most of her work is in the field of cybernetics. Her breakthrough, if you ask me, is adjusting joint grafts. She's still growing so she developed a graft that would handle growth of the rest of the body. It has limited application. Not many young people need prosthetics and could afford something like that. Even less are interested in cybernetics for its own sake like she is. She works with Synthia, a well established heroine, to install the grafts. Synthia has been developing aid for other heroes for a while but she's most well known for her auto surgery machine to self install the extensive implants she designed. Well I guess really she's famous for that metal half jaw she has as a result of that accident. She isn't much for front line work these days. Sometimes I wonder if Lisa will end up like Synthia. She certainly has the attitude to go beyond just an arm.

Aw I hope not! She's so pretty. I don't want her to make her body metal and bulky.

Pretty? Just what- Nevermind. I actually like the minimalist aesthetic on her arm. But that is neither here nor there. So with the three of us getting increasingly involved with super human antics I fear Dahlia and Jackie are feeling left out.

Yeah and it's probably weird for them now that we're literally always together, Diane.

Well I don't see the problem. We always stuck together anyway.

Yeah... but we didn't have all the same classes. And there were other times we would run into them.

Well I hmm... Well it doesn't matter now. Jackie is busy with her new boyfriend anyway.

Oh yeah! We have to meet him.

Ugh. Well I suppose. As long as he's been properly warned.

Oh come on Diane. Everyone knows who we are. It wasn't even a week before word spread through town. Heh heh, we're probably more recognized now more than ever.

For worse I think. At least when we move to the city we'll be rid of Mr. Steinwick's campaign to have us kicked out of the school. All his reasons are baseless. Deflections from the real reason. He doesn't want his son sharing a class with a freak like that.

I heard his wife died from an escaped lab experiment-

That doesn't excuse it! We're not some thing broken out of a cage. A rabid dog to put down. He should take a page from the other parents. Like our parents. Honestly I'm surprised at how well they're taking it. I suppose they're just too relieved that we're both alive. The result could have been much worse. Actually mom has been a bit smothering now that I think about it. Dad is focusing on his work.

She gives enough love for two people because it's both of us!

Is it I that is insane... or the rest of the world?

quote:

What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to?

Honestly? I haven't given it too much thought. It comes with the legacy, I guess. You're just sort of part of it, if you like to or not. Good thing I like it, though!

But I've always thought of becoming a vet. I just really like animals! So naturally becoming an animal doctor was something I was looking into. Unfortunately, there aren't really all that many pets in Summitview, and the farms around here already have their mainstay doctors.

quote:

How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?

Well, it's a growing metropolis! Surely, I could find a place to open my own little vet clinic there. I mean, obviously I got to finish school and everything first, but I'm optimistic about it. I do worry a little bit how well it'd mesh with my whole magical girl 'side venture', though...

quote:

Tell me a little more about your contract. What kind of promises do you have to make to officially join the North-Wind Witches?

Well, you ever watched any magical girl shows? It's pretty much exactly that. Like, you may think it's just a genre of animation, but no it's actually based on real life magical girls!

It's just that most people don't take it seriously, or think we're just ordinary supers.

Anyway, as for what my contract stated, it's a really basic fight against evil and protect the weak thing. Basically, I just get to become a magical girl in exchange for helping fight monsters and evil people and stuff. This is no Madoka, there's no secret conspiracy behind it.

Uhm, I think so? I... hope?

quote:

What happened last time Annalena and Holly came to visit? Why do you feel like you need to prove yourself more than ever?

It was just really any other visit. Well, it would have been, if the Darkfire Witch hadn't attacked! Mind you, that was like a week after I first got my contract. So naturally, I didn't do all that well! And by that I mean, I kind of got knocked out in the first attack. It just wasn't fair! She immediately targeted me!

But yeah, Mom and Grandma were able to fight her off. Mom didn't say anything on the matter, but Grandma wasn't very impressed. "Back in my day, I would have defeated her with my eyes closed!" I think she said?

... honestly I doubt that's true, but she's also really old. So maybe her memory just isn't the best anymore.

quote:

Have you ever felt like the team was holding you back? More than anyone else, you've got a reputation to consider. Do you think that your legacy approves of them?

I'm honestly not sure. They never commented on it much. But I think Mom's fine with it, for the most part. Maybe it's even what she was going for the entire time? I hear teenage hero teams are very common in Halcyon City. And really, I do need some more practice, and having that extra safety blanket is nice.

Besides, even if it turns out that this team will damage our reputation (and I don't think it will, after all I'm just the rookie stumbling a bit, while Mom and Grandma are pulling off ridiculous save-the-city heroics on a near daily basis), I got loads of time! Like I said, being a magical girl slows your aging, and I really just need practice. Lots of practice. Magic is hard, okay?!

  • What heist did Mockingbird pull off that people are still talking about?

There is one that most consider the crowning moment of her career, the one that people still talk about till this very day, and the one I keep asking her how she did it but she still won't let me know. They call it "The Missing Time Caper", or the day Mockingbird stole time.

Not literally, by the way.

It was the day before New Year's Eve. Mockingbird had somehow hijacked the airwaves, and broadcast a message that was heard all throughout the city. She said that, at the night of New Years Eve, at the moment the clock hits 12 and the New Day begins, she would steal time itself, and she challenged Nova Star directly to try and stop her before "time runs out," and to hurry up, because the "clock is ticking."

"You have no idea how proud I am of those lines."

Ahem, yes. So Mockingbird left little clues and hints all throughout the city about her target. Nova Star managed to put all the clues together, and found the answer: Mockingbird was planning on stealing the clock face from the clock tower located in the middle of the city. How is that even possible? It's near a crowded park. It'll be filled with eyes, especially on New Years Eve, and how would you even steal a clock face? How would you even hide it? It was all absurd!

It wasn't absurd to Nova Star. She took Mockingbird's words seriously, and took every precaution available to insure that her plan would not come to pass.

Then came the fateful night. The park was crowded, more so than usual, and there where police everywhere. Nova Star herself stood on the edge of the clock tower, keeping a watchful eye of her surroundings. It was almost time, 5 minutes till midnight, and still nothing. It wasn't until when one minute was left when it happened.

Mockingbird jacked into the airwaves again, and made a grand speech about time, and then she started counting down the time until New Years, and the moment she uttered "1," all the power in the area was cut off, leaving everybody in darkness. The power came back on a few seconds later, and the clock face was gone, replaced with a holographic projection of Mockingbird yelling out, "Happy New Years!"

Nobody knows how she did any of it. Nova Star- Sarah has given up trying to ask mother how she did it, or where she even hid the clock face. I'm hoping she'd tell me one day, seeing as how I'm her daughter, and mothers aren't supposed to keep secrets from daughters.

"Eh. I'll tell it to you when you're older.

quote:

So you took down Scythana? Impressive! Who else might be out for blood? Do you think you and the team can take them on?
Sarah came to mother the day after Scythana was arrested to warn her about three others. The first is Dom "Land Shark" Diamond. Dom and Scythana were a pair, and together they formed the main muscle of Tobias' crew, and he probably won't be happy when he found out what happened to Scythana.

The second is Annabelle, The Cruel Rose. Despite her appearance, Annabelle is the most sadistic of all the enforcers, preferring to play with her "toys" before she breaks them. She is also a technical genius, and was the one responsible for creating most of the tech that was used by in Tobias' empire. Annabelle also has her own little army of robots, which she called her "Marionette Troupe."

"More like "had." That little troop of hers was one of the first things me and Sarah took down. The look on Annabelle's face when she realized we sabatoged her puppets was priceless."

The final, and most dangerous one, is Tobias' second-in-command, the enigmantic Neuro. Nobody knows much about them, or who they are, or even what they do. Nobody has even heard them talk. All that is known about Neuro is, when they are around, bad things happen. There are rumors that Neuro is trying to rebuild the empire, and is searching for other villains, while trying to enact their revenge on Mockingbird.

As for if we can take them on? I can most assuredly say that we-

"No."

...What?

"You can't. I forbid it.

B-b-b-ut mother-

"No. They're too dangerous, and you are not to fight them, under any circumstance, do you understand?"

...I understand.

Now, it sounds like the whole anime monologue angle hasn't always worked out so well. What's a time where it did?

Why, yes! This time, I have learned from my mistakes, and I made sure I was properly prepared! If they would not sit and listen, then I will bring it to them! I strapped a music player and speakers to my belt, used my wind powers to have the cherry blossoms float around me, and gave my speech as I charged in!

"Wait wait wait, are you telling me you gave your speech while you were beating the heck out of them?"

Yes! And I haven't flubbed a single line!

"...I have never been prouder to call you my daughter."

We're your first, last, and only line of defense. We live in secret. We exist in shadow.

And we dress in black.

Trick bullets, huh? That's awesome! Where do you get them from? What's your favorite?

Aren't they just? I love em! Gramps pays for them, we get them custom made from one of the Heroics supply companies, Avalon Inc. If I was a suponsoured hero, they'd come a lot cheaper, or, really, the League pays for them completely, but since I'm independent, we have to pay full price. Gramps has a lot of money though, he was pretty successful after he came back from the war, so we can afford it. Picking a favorite is pretty hard! The glue shot is always useful, and the taser bullet likewise... Maybe the expansive gel bullet? Once it hits head on, it creates a big ball, like four feet across, of absorptive gel, so if you jump from a high place and land on it, you just sink into it, then slowly pop out, good as new. And the way it expands means it won't damage anything inside of it, but it will grow out around it, so you can trap someone in it if you need to. Thought its hard to beat good old explosive bullets. Mine come in a range of power and size, from the force of a punch to grenade strength.

Are you entirely self-taught or did you have help learning how to use a sword?

I'm mostly self taught. I looked up online tutorials on youtube, and I took fencing for a quarter at school, that was the only time they offered it. Otherwise it's just me and my sword, and weighted training swords. After awhile, I good tickets to go to a non-powered competition in Halcyon City, and I got first place there, and that was a year ago! Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I'm very good. It's all about the hard work and dedication.

quote:

I hear that Mrs. Cooper isn't the only one who is a fan of your writing. Who did you impress that was completely unexpected? What were you writing about?

Ugh, that doesn't matter. I'm not going to become an author, I'm going to be a superhero! But fine, since you already know about it anyway, I'll tell you. It was a short story I put in for an assignment in class a few months back, I was writing about a fictional young superhero out in the wild west, had all sorts of adventures with powered people, but the thing was, the only thing she had was her horse and her gun, no trick bullets either. It was a story about manifesting your own destiny and helping to forge a new society in the wastelands of the unknown. Obviously there weren't any superheroes back in the wild west, but it was a good story! And Mrs. Cooper entered it into a national competition for young authors, without telling me. It came in second, and I got offered a scholarship and stuff, but like I said, I'm not taking it, I'm not going to be a writer. I'm going to be a superhero!

quote:

What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to?

Didn't I just tell you that? Nothing. I'm a superhero, I'm not doing anything else with my life, there's nothing else I want to do. And I bet anyone who tells you something else about themselves is a big, fat, liar.

quote:

How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?
To become a superhero? Isn't that obvious, there's way more trouble to stop, you can save a lot more people than I can back here, and the Leage pays more attention to Halcyon City heroes than outsiders. Unless you meant the 'other' dream, which I don't have. Well, there's more opportunities in general in Halcyon City, but still. Meaningless. I'm not the kind of person who gives up on a dream because it's difficult.

What, outside of heroics, have you thought about dedicating your life to?
You know my little bag of tricks? *he flourishes his hand, and is suddenly holding a small yellow orb with a smiley drawn on it.* I make all of these myself. Punchline was always very specific about the need to know how everything you used worked. *he flourishes again and the orb disappears.* So I’ve been drilled on a lot of chemistry and make most of my own gags. And maybe I’ve learned to appreciate the finer points of producing your own pom-poms? So I was thinking about it with my brother back in Halcyon, and he pointed out that even though I don’t necessarily like the idea of going for the physician position, maybe medical research is in my future? Pharmaceuticals maybe. Even if I’m not bopping bontzez, I still want to be helping folks. And since that wasn’t very funny, here’s something that is: I once knew a joke about amnesia, but I forgot it! Hee, ha!

quote:

How might moving to Halcyon City help you in accomplishing that dream?
Easy squeezy, Mac. I like my second home here in Summitville, but it sadly just does not have quite the same diversity of higher education options. If I want to practice, well, anything I’m going to have to mosey back down hill and really slug away at those books if I want to get anywhere.

quote:

I understand you have some... hidden talents. How have they helped you live up to the example Punchline sets for you?
Shhhh!!! Shush! HOW DO YOU KNOW? Wait right, sorry. shush. Ok well, as you might imagine, trying to keep an audience like punchline is admittedly a bigger bite than a greenhorn like me can chew, so I’ve been using it to keep up. Boss P has had years to get his timing down, but me, I need a little edge to make sure I have something when I need it. I use it for tricks like juggling. I’m still doing the work, I’ll have you know, but I maybe use those things to sort of, push things along. Keep my bit afloat .

Punchy always says that keeping your opponent distracted is the way to keep yourself on the winning side, and I’m sad to admit I don’t quite have his “charming” personality or “winning smile” down, haha! He also was very adamant about making sure your material stayed fresh, so that you can knock the crowd off their feet every time. So I make sure not to pull it out of my hat quite so much. I have to make do with a bit of improv in my set. A tug here, a moved object there, a clatter of something falling over just to keep their eyes off me for a bit. It keeps me at generally Punchline’s pace in a fight and out. And maaayyybee it helps a bit in getting these dang gags together. Err, don’t tell PL I’m using it on my chem set. He doesn’t like me doing that….

quote:

What's the one villain you seem to keep running in to? It seems like they have something going on just like Richter did. Why won't they open up to you?
Haaaaahhh *sighs* What do you call a sad cup of coffee? Depresso… Cause that’s all I feel when I think of every time I’ve had the PLEASURE of running into Cosmica.

Ahhhhh! This girl will be the end of me! *Throws hands up dramatically, does an orz* I know that I’m quite the performance, but this act can’t be tied down to any one member of my audience! Hoho! I I would say she had a crush on me, if only for the fact that I see her at least EVERY WEEK *flops head to side*, but she really seems to be trying her best to off me whenever we tussle! I haven’t been able to chart her particular star, mostly because, and I am quoting ver baetum here “I hate clowns you giant creep!” Every time I try to talk to my adoring fan she just freaks out and starts throwing those bright starbolts at me! Ahh! The tragedy of this fool! What’s a poor clown to do? *imagine exaggerated gestures at every part of this monologue*

And believe me, I’ve tried! I realized that she’s not really the bad sort, after the first couple of our two-parters. She never steals hard cash or intentionally hurts anyone. Any time she does, she freaks out and goes shooting off like a comet before I can get back to her. How does she even run so fast in heels? Heels! She mostly goes after food and supplies, and has broken into the camping outlet in town so much they decided to just put in a skylight for her! It’s rather sad on my part. I’ve been asking around to see if anyone recognizes her, but she’s as mysterious as dark matter! Completely unknown! I’m waiting to hear back from Punchline, whom I gave her description and power set to a couple of weeks ago, to see if she flew in from Halcyon, but he’s been busy. Hopefully I'll hear from him soon.

quote:

What's your brother doing these days?
Who? My bro? My brosky? Bromide? Brosideon? He’s doing good! Good… He’s doing...great. 'Is back living on the east side of Halcyon. He’s got his old job back after he got out of the hospital. Certified mechanic at Hotrod's Brake & Shop. It’s actually the shop of an old league vet who’s retired. The owner’s a really cool guy. Really cool. My brother’s doing well. No signs of any re-emergence of anything… Um, we keep in touch! I text him at least twice a week to check up! He says he met this girl, Dahlia, after some big league punch-up that was happening in his part of town.
Says that they’ve met a few times and things seem cool. I’m rooting for him. I know that I’ve got him on edge with the hero thing, but he understands. I think. He’s at least cool enough with it to help keep me out here. I just… I’m always worried about him. We’ve been watching out for each other for so long, it’s a bit hard to be so far from that. The assurance of it. I’m glad he’s doing well though. He’ll be the first person I see next time I’m in Halcyon. Whenever that is.
