the transformations looked like standard magical girl to me. the sexual imagery i can understand giving people pause, if only because fixating on cocona's inner thigh doesn't seem to do much thematically or for the story. whereas the gagged women and rabbit stuff at least seem to be exploring an idea of sexual awakening and the relationship between cocona and papika.

Not certain what you're referring to by "kill la kill esque" transformations, this ep's were straight out of Precure or Sailor Moon, totally standard magical girl stuff.

I know that sexual imagery in magical girl transformations goes back a long way (thinking of Sailor Jupiter) but it's still troubling to see it. Same deal with the inner thigh thing, like, why put that there. The gagged women and rabbit stuff didn't bother me as much, but it still adds up to a show that...well, we'll see how the writing turns out. Hopefully it either tones it down or does something with it in a well-handled way. Fingers crossed because it's so good so far! I mean, putting the gem on Cocona's thigh has thus far given two separate characters, both of whom Cocona seemed to be attracted to (Papika in Episode 2, Evil Bondage Queen in 3), reason to reach between her legs, which certainly plays into the sexual tension/awakening thing the show seemed to be starting up in those episodes. We can certainly argue whether it's necessary, and the show could very easily fumble that theme hard, but I wouldn't say it exists solely for titillation.

It's definitely more Ikuhara than Imaishi, but it looks more Imaishi, especially since there's still very little indication of how the sexual imagery plays into the story as a whole.

Okay realtalk if I had to compare this anime to anything else I'd compare it to Over the Garden Wall with the dreamlike atmosphere and rwo kids going on adventures....but that impression has been fading a bit with Mad Max: The Anime and more of the plot cropping up. ....Anyways it's all moot because the show is good and it's better to enjoy something on its own merits than compare it to something else, soooo... Speculation time: Salt is real salty about people not being imaginative or something so he's going to make Pure Illusion reality so there can be more art in the world. The evil KKK dudes want to capture Pure Illusion for their own purposes and control who can be creative, because...world domination maybe. Ah, who knows. I just want Papika and Cocona to become good friends and have some cool adventures!

I think this may depend on just how far the dream-logic of Pure Illusion goes. If it and its residents are largely shaped by the subconsciouses of those who enter it, then what we saw here wasn't just a monster getting way too up in our heroine's comfort zone on multiple levels, but Cocona going through a pretty dark stage of her sexual awakening. Her reaction on first meeting her did suggest a certain degree of repressed desire. Also, all these posts and I'm the first to mention Fist of the North Star? Shame on you all.

This episode didn't quite do it for me as much as the first 2 did, but the first two were secreting atmosphere at a rate that requires the attention of a dermatologist, so I can't be too mad at the show going from "sublime" to "really good." Also, Cocona's fragment being in her inner thigh is totally sexually charged. It's just sexually charged in the sense that Cocona is a girl who has suppressed every aspect of her emotional state, especially her sexuality, and her sexual awakening is messing with her carefully constructed facade in a variety of ways. Granted in this case that means she literally gets superpowers from her sexual awakening, but it beats the hell out of the myriad examples of characters getting superpowers from their virginity. Even more traditional magical girl stuff usually abridges them most of the time after their debut, and FF seems...decidedly non traditional so far.

As the worlds #1 fan of transformation sequences, I would be more than fine if they stuck around, but I really don't expect them to. If they do continue, I expect them to be very different from episode to episode. This show has yet to disappoint visually, and I doubt it will start now. Really, this show has given pretty much no reason for pessimism whatsoever.

Every episode has gone for a different theme and this one went for action and nailed it. To complain that it felt like a generic action anime means it did exactly what it was going for. To assume it'll keep up this theme when it dropped the last two after a single episode is silly, though.

I enjoy this show more now that I accept it as an homage to science, fairy tales, and the history of anime, combined together somehow. The show has instructed the viewer on the best way to enjoy the show, pop a potato and enjoy the ride.
