i'd imagine that if you somehow "drained" enough heat from the earth's mantle to make a difference you would end up with all the same problems of a volcanic eruption up here on the surface. energy has to go somewhere

Yellowstone would be a class 8 eruption, several thousand times more energy, so we'd need to double the US geothermal production, put all that new capacity in Yellowstone, and run it for thousands of years. But hey, the thing erupts only once every tens of thousands of years or so, that might just be enough to save future humanity.
