my parents got one and it was cool, the whole extended family gave it a go over last thanksgiving.

dunno if I would have spent too much money on it though, the "you can look in any direction" gimmick is probably hard to shoot because all media assumes you're only looking in one direction.

iirc the oculus rift has a "vr movie" app that everyone was like wow, how can they just convert any movie to vr???? and then it turned out that it's just a vr simulation of you sitting in a theater watching the movie on a screen in front of you lmao

oculus requires a beefy gaming pc but vr is something you want to do on your couch or standing up, not in front of your computer. only the biggest of spergs have a gaming pc in their living room.

developers and a handful of turbo-nerds are the only ones currently spending hundreds of dollars on vr gear so that's not an issue. the biggest issue vr has is that normal people aren't going to spend hundreds of dollars to sit at home wearing goggles while flailing their arms around.

if a new video game crash happens it's probably going to be from companies dumping billions into vr stuff for a market that is dwarfed by the mac/linux segment.

I've watched a couple of streamers on Twitch do VR. It was boring to watch, the streamers didn't enjoy it, and sometimes they got motion sick. No one even bothered feigning enthusiasm.

the rift is $600 plus $100 for the touch controllers, the vive is $800, and the ps vr is $400 ($500 if you don't already have a ps camera and move controllers which you probably don't). it came out later than the vive, but not *that* much later. i don't think it's any less powerful since it's still tethered to a pc unless you mean in terms of not having roomscale stuff. i'm p sure the vive is doing worse since no one has a good gaming rig with the space needed for roomscale, anyway. ps vr seems to be selling out as quickly as they can make them, so there's that

I'm pretty sure one big use case for vr headsets will be sitting alone in your crappy apartment with a headset on in a vr living room with nice furniture and a view from the window you don't actually have and also your virtual girlfriend or your video game friends sitting next to you as you watch your giant virtual tv.

it's not a game, it's just an escapism experience plus Netflix.

all of the vr headsets sold out at first. the problem is that after that adoption basically stopped since the early adopter tech nerds are the only ones who seem to care about vr.

well yeah, but escapism to what degree? there's a difference in playing cards with your friends or watching tv with your family, vs. drooling on your lap with the headset on.
