http://votefinder.org/game/shine-iiii One day, a simple man by the name of Iskra Miloslovsky brewed up a very special batch of moonshine - known simply as Shine - that changed the world forever. Much to his surprise, those who drank his creation gained extraordinary abilities - well beyond their wildest dreams! To most, Shine was just an urban legend, and Prohibition was just the Man trying to keep the common people from their alcohol. But anytime a new power rises, so too do those who would take it for themselves... First, a silent war broke out in New York City focused on one certain backroom speakeasy where tradesmen congregated to enjoy a drink after a hard day's work, but in the end the common man won the day against both the New York City Mafia and the newly-founded FBI, and Shine survived to spread beyond the city. Then, Shine came to Chicago in the midst of a brutal gang war as the Outfit struggled to retain control over the city while their former boss Al Capone languished in prison, but in the end the nefarious North Side Gang crushed the Outfit and took control of the Shine trade in Chicago. Through each bloody conflict, Shine spread further across the nation - as did the secrets of its brewing. And now, with the end of Prohibition, Shine is easy to get for anyone who wants it - young or old, rich or poor. But crafty brewers keep on experimenting with Shine recipes, and new batches pop up every day with stranger and stranger effects. In the end, nobody could have foreseen the kind of chaos a humble Russian immigrant's creation would bring to the bustling city of New Orleans. What darkness lies behind the frail veneer of this bright and lively place, as Prohibition's last dying clutches fade away and New Orleans' residents embrace the unpredictable power of Shine? Shine III: Spirits of New Orleans, is a flavorful closed-setup game of Mafia for 33(!) players. General Rules:

I (foolishly, perhaps) was concerned about filling a 33-person game, though I am pleasantly surprised by how things are working out. That being said, even if we "fill" the game won't start immediately - I need to finalize PMs and am still waiting for two people I know specifically wanted to play that aren't very active on SA Mafia right now to check in. The large game size combined with the anti-lurking rule are the reason that days will be a bit longer (as per OP) than my usual game timeframes, yeah. This is the biggest game I've ever run (not counting co-modding the Smash soldiers game) so I'm excited too!

Izzhov posted:Btw if Prohibition is ended does that mean we're in the middle of the Great Depression? Yes and no. While the Great Depression is certainly starting to take hold of the nation, the Shine trade has counteracted its effects in New Orleans and a couple of other places. With the number of people brewing Shine for a thirsty city (and shipping it elsewhere, thanks to the lively port trade) New Orleans is actually going through a serious boom period right now. But whether that bubble will burst sooner or later... we'll find out, I suppose! (Jesus I'm already talking about flavor before the game's even full.)

A new morning dawns brightly across New Orleans, much like every other. But for the first few people to stumble out of their homes and greet the new day, they are faced with a horrifying sight! He had been a community fixture for years - while on the surface he kept order, he also acted as a balance - and a foundation - for the New Orleans community as a whole. Over the years, his kind words and brisk temperament defused community tensions again and again before they could erupt into outright bloodshed. Without a doubt, he saved countless lives over the years, and made New Orleans into what it was today... And now he was gone. Aloysius Caissy, New Orleans-Aligned Cop, was beaten to death on Night 0! While one death might seem like such a minor thing on the surface, in the years to come people will look back at this day and marvel at how it all began here. But history is made every day, and what happens next is up to you. Welcome to New Orleans. Please, have a drink and enjoy your stay. Day 1 has begun! Deadline is Monday, October 24th, at 8:00 PM EDT. Ominous fireworks soar into the sky, tracing out confusing images and tainting the light of the early morning with an eerie hue. Everyone is left with a rising sense of tension and fear. The powder keg has been primed. Who will throw the first match? Today's voting method is Limited Lights Out! When a player has received a majority of votes, they will be removed from the game but their flip will not be posted. The deadline will be extended by approximately 1 real-life day from the original deadline, and the game day will continue. Once a second lynch occurs OR the deadline passes without a majority vote, the day will end and all flips will be posted. A majority vote for "No Lynch" will also end the day at any time as normal. As a general reminder, I will NOT be posting in the thread outside of game-related posts (with rare exceptions) now that the game has started. If you have any questions about the game or your role, or any concerns with things like deadlines, please PM me. Good luck and have fun!

In retrospect, it's incredible - one simple constable's death set off a firestorm of accusations and chaos that swept throughout the city. In the end, it wasn't until a formerly fine and upstanding member of the community went totally off his nut, stripping down to his skivvies and screaming about ghosts and Shine, that the local law enforcement finally stepped in and hauled him away - presumably for his own safety. Always such a shame when bad things happen to good people. quote:Everyone talks about how New Orleans is chock-full of spirits of all sorts - controlled by the voodoo queens squatting in their swamps, weaving their eerie rituals for one reason or another. You don't believe in that sort of hogwash, as a stern and upright man. Voodoo spirits! What nonsense. It's just the mindless babble of drunkards and madmen. Mr. F!, aka Gaspare Fontaine, New Orleans-Aligned Vanilla {Universal Backup}, was hauled off to the loony bin (MODKILLED) on Day 1! The rest of you cast uneasy looks at each other as you return to your homes for the evening. While the day may have ended in a rather unsatisfying and abrupt way with many questions still unanswered, none of you are quite sure what to expect from the looming night. Night 1 begins now. You have ~17 hours from this post (until 10/25 @ 10:00 AM Eastern) to get me any night actions. (Please also let me know if you have a night action and are not using it!) This is a strict limit - if I don't hear from you by that time you will forfeit your night action! The citizens of New Orleans will resume their tense discussions by 1:00 PM Eastern tomorrow, 10/25. After a restless night filled with peculiar dreams, the residents of New Orleans set about their morning routines with gusto. Even with the unsettling end to yesterday, it was a new day - and a new beginning! But as they soon realized, not everyone had lived to see the sun rise. ~~~ The first body was found stuffed into a crate near the docks - it would have been loaded onto a ship leaving for South America that day, if not for the blood seeping through its planks. quote:When the whole world is a joke, all you can do is sit back and laugh until it stops hurting. But when you're the butt of the joke... it never stops. Quidthulhu, aka Lucas Rivet, New Orleans-Aligned Absorber, was filled with lead on Night 1! ~~~ A street cleaner stumbled over the next corpse - with his finely tailored clothing torn to shreds and raw bruises blooming beneath, he had been discarded on the sidewalk like nothing more than garbage. quote:You've always considered yourself a bit of a cultured gentleman. Tipping your hat to the ladies, and giving a polite nod to the lesser gents. You were a perfectly proper man-about-town, and destined to be one of the Family's rising stars. But all that changed when you had your first sip of Shine... PALE SPECTRES, aka Jean Matherne, Provenzano Family-Aligned Vanilla {Watcher}, was beaten to death on Night 1! ~~~ But in the end, as shocking of a start to the day as the violent murders had been, nothing left New Orleans' residents more unsettled than the strange disappearance of one of their own. With nary a drop of blood spilled nor any signs of violence, it was as if she had been snatched away without even a moment's time to resist. quote:People remember the strangest things. The color of lipstick that their first kiss was wearing, the scent of cologne that their grandfather always loved, the specific cobblestone they always tripped over on their morning walk... the list goes on. It's a wonder that anyone gets anything done, with all this cluttering up their minds. Truth Quark, aka Teresita Capello, New Orleans-Aligned Vanilla {Universal Backup}, vanished mysteriously on Night 1! ~~~ As you ponder your situation, a whispered secret sweeps across New Orleans - something seen woven into a spiderweb? Strange as it sounds, it must surely be true... TMMadman visited Max on Night 1. ~~~ Even for the most optimistic among you, there's no denying it now - death has come to New Orleans, hot on the heels of Shine. With that pleasant thought looming over your heads... how will you use your time today? Day 2 has begun! Deadline is Thursday, October 27th, at 8:00 PM EDT. Just like yesterday, the popping of unexpected fireworks - eerily like the chattering of invisible teeth - rouses the last few stragglers from their beds. Those already up and about are left with a queer sense of foreboding as they watch the sickly explosions fade from the sky. If yesterday was just the beginning, what will today bring? Today's voting method is Limited Lights Out! When a player has received a majority of votes, they will be removed from the game but their flip will not be posted. With such an inauspicious start to the day, it was little surprise that wild accusations followed closely on its heels. Eventually the crowd's ire consolidated on one unlucky soul, and they were flung in a holding cell to await the justice of the gallows at the day's end. Will anyone else join them for the hangman's necktie fitting? Izzhov may no longer post. Day 2 continues. Deadline is extended to Friday, October 28th, at 8:00 PM EDT. The next lynch, or a majority vote for No Lynch, will end the day.

The current deadline is October 28th, 2016 at 8 p.m. EDT -- that's in about 8 hours, 13 minutes. As can be expected of any lively shipping port, there were naturally those who tried to skim profit off the top - most frequently by smuggling extra Shine out of the city. The harbormasters ensured that nearly all ships leaving the harbor were carefully inspected, but every now and then a ship slipped through their fingers and more precious Shine vanished without a trace. Such a thing was not without its risks though - captains that were caught smuggling Shine paid a hefty price. Not only did they have to relinquish half of their cargo on top of the illicit goods, they were permanently subject to a grievously high port entry fee for the privilege of continuing to ship Shine around the world. Naturally, every single captain paid the fee to keep shipping - how could they not? Shine was murderously profitable, even with the added expense.

The sun's blazing edge finally kissed the horizon, washing the city with a ruddy hue. As the luckless victim was dragged up to the gallows, an unconscious sigh of relief rippled its way through the assembled onlookers. At long last, this day was done. They could only hope they'd made the right choices... or more innocents would die watching their last sunset. ~~~ The hangman's noose slipped around the first victim's neck, and with a creak, the ground dropped away beneath her. She died, eyes bulging wide, while cursing you all with her last breaths. You couldn't help but feel a little chilled - there was a fury behind her words that you hadn't expected. It seems she never had New Orleans in her best interests after all. quote:You love this town, and everything about it. New Orleans has taught you so much - about the world, and about yourself. Back in Sicily, sure, people respected you - but the men always made the decisions for the family. That's just the way things were, and they weren't changing anytime soon. Jimmy Hats, aka Lucilla Provenzano, Provenzano Family-Aligned Voodoo Master*, was lynched on Day 2! ~~~ As the sun continued to sink below the horizon, a ripple of muted cheers and applause swept through the crowd as some tension from the day lifted away. But they couldn't forget the other one to be hanged, even though they threw them in a cell what feels like days ago. A constable strode over to the cell, pulling a heavy ring of keys from his pocket. With a flourish, he pulled the door wide ajar, revealing... Nothing. You have FAILED to lynch Izzhov! ~~~ The blazing sun finally sets, vanishing from view as darkness shrouds New Orleans. The street lights flicker to life - a bit too slowly for your tastes, as the tension from before has returned in spades. Hurrying home to flee the encroaching night, you wonder what the new day will bring - and who among you will live to see the sun rise once again. Night 2 begins now. After the unexpected ending to the previous day, the night was long and full of terrors - every strange noise or footstep outside was magnified thousandfold in the worried New Orleans residents' minds. As the new day dawned, they couldn't help but hurry outside to see what the new day looked like - and what the night's mysterious workings had wrought. ~~~ The first corpse was found by the sleepy-eyed trash collectors - a grisly surprise lurking within a binful of rubbish. As they stepped cautiously towards the shredded corpse to inspect it more closely, realization dawned upon them - they knew that face! quote:New Orleans is just terrible. You hate this place with all your heart, and the people in it. Sometimes you wish you had never left Sicily. Back there the food was good, the women were beautiful, and there weren't horrible little voodoo spirit-things everywhere you looked. tpink, aka Sylvestro Carolla, Carolla Family-Aligned Voodoo Master*, was filled with lead on Night 2! ~~~ The next body was easy enough to find - all people had to do was follow their noses. The smell of cooked meat set hungry stomachs rumbling - but once they saw the corpse for themselves, all traces of appetite vanished in the blink of an eye. quote:You killed your first man at the tender age of eleven - drove your thumb through his eye and kicked him till he died, screaming bloody murder all the while. Heh, bloody murder. Never realized how appropriate that phrase was till now. Murmur Twin, aka Roland Beattie, Mama's Third Son, Black Hand Gang-Aligned Vanilla {Follower}, was incinerated on Night 2! ~~~ As the last few stragglers rose from their beds, a rapid headcount ensued. With a gulp, people's fears were confirmed - once again, someone had been taken in the night with no trace of their passing. While the violence of each morning was becoming distressingly commonplace, this mystery still filled many of you with dread. quote:By god, that was the worst drink you've ever had. Certainly, it tasted fine at the time, but the aftermath... THAT you would have preferred to avoid. Kashuno, aka Gino Michel, New Orleans-Aligned Unconfirmed Mason* {Tracker}, vanished mysteriously on Night 2! ~~~ Much like yesterday, nobody could put their finger on where the rumor began, but it seems at least one part of the previous night's mysteries was observed - by someone, or something. King Burgundy visited Max on Night 2. ~~~ Though death's chill touch has once again visited New Orleans, you take heart in the fact that its icy grasp seems to have worked in your favor - this time. But can you afford to get complacent now? Day 3 has begun! Deadline is Tuesday, November 1st, at 8:00 PM EDT. For the third day in a row, mysterious fireworks explode across the sky of New Orleans. As their echoes fade from your ringing ears, the tensions of the last two days come crashing back in their place. As treachery floods the streets of this city, will you face your rising dread head-on - or will you quiver and quail before it? Today's voting method is Limited Lights Out! When a player has received a majority of votes, they will be removed from the game but their flip will not be posted. The deadline will be set to ~24 hours from the time of lynch, but no later than ~60 hours from day start, and the game day will continue. The current deadline is November 01st, 2016 at 8 p.m. EDT -- that's in about 2 days, 3 hours. New Orleans' government struggled mightily to deal with Shine's effects on the city - both criminal and economic in nature. Its elected officials found themselves faced with moral quandaries and new duties to their electorate that they had never dreamed of when they were elected to once-cushy jobs. The ramifications of the decisions these beleaguered men made - and didn't make - would affect how Shine was viewed and handled by governments across the whole nation. Under this tremendous pressure... interesting choices were made.

While Prohibition was in effect, naturally it was illegal like any other alcohol, but now that that particular hindrance was gone it fell to local governments to arbitrate. Of course, New Orleans overwhelmingly voted to legalize Shine in all forms. How could they not, with it as inextricably tied to the city's livelihood (much like a bloated parasite) as it was? Yet again, the assembled crowd's suspicion falls upon a certain person. With little ceremony, they are flung into a holding cell - naturally, a different one than the day before, just in case. Votecount for Day 3 Not Voting (24): Absurd Revolver, Anomalous Amalgam, Atomic Soda, CapitalistPig, Captain Foo, DickBastardly, dongsbot9000, DrJeckyllTobacco, Drunk Nerds, got some chores tonight, Infinitum, JimsonTheBetrayer, Jonathan Fisk, King Burgundy, Max, Mayor Glowku, Moatillata, OMGVBFLOL, Somberbrero, The Lord of Hats, this is a stickup, TMMadman, Tobbs Gnawed, zimbomonkey With 24 people still alive, it takes 13 votes to lynch. The current deadline is October 31st, 2016 at 9 p.m. EDT -- that's in about 22 hours, 59 minutes. One such example of the government's struggles - whether to explicitly legalize Shine or not. The current deadline is October 31st, 2016 at 9 p.m. EDT -- that's in about 11 hours, 30 minutes. With Shine legalized, the next question was obvious. Who would be authorized to brew it, and how could they be regulated? With backwater distilleries cropping up everywhere, it was sure to become a headache. The obvious solution - make it someone else's headache! With due pomp and circumstance, New Orleans enacted the Freemen's Shine Creation Act, duly noting in a tremendous pile of legal jargon that they placed no restrictions on Shine brewing at the local level but would be receptive to any guidance or regulation enacted at the federal level. Please note the deadline is TONIGHT due to the revised Limited Lights Out rules. If you have concerns about timing due to holiday plans please PM me.

In the years to come, other cities and states would follow in New Orleans' footsteps and pass the buck to the federal government about how to regulate Shine - if such a thing was even possible. Whether they ever did anything of the sort.... that's a story for another time.
