...We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you....

Ignore the steampunk trappings if you will. It's just a fancy lady on a golden throne.

The man was on his knees, hands on his lap, clothed in naught but a plain white robe of strange ethereal quality. With him he had nothing but a golden slab hanging from his neck, inscribed with his name, date of birth and date of death. Indeed, he had very little with his person, but at least he was not alone. In front of him, elevated on an elaborate golden throne, sat a feminine figure clothed in fine robes, face obscured by an ivory mask of blank expression.

”Odran Matthew Gormain”, she intoned in a fairly youthful, but authoritative and steely voice, ”I am Lady Julia, the judge of the dead, and the supreme authority on their passing.”

A measured pause was kept, to let the message sink in.

”I will read to you your sins, and then render judgement.”

The mask obscured her eyes, but her gaze could be felt nevertheless. And it felt very, very heavy. The tapping of her fingers on the armrest of the throne felt like the clanging of gongs in the oppressive silence of the Judgement Hall.

”First of all, you have a troubling history of…”

______________________

”Julia. You stand here today in the presence of the Court of Ten Kings.”

”So I do”, came the memorized response.

______________________

”…and thus, I judge thee deserving of hell”, the goddess intoned, her voice striking with a sense of utter and absolute inevitability. Flickers of flame licked the soul for but a second before it vanished. It didn’t even have the time to scream.

”Next.” The word was not loud, but could be heard with equal strength and clarity everywhere in the Judgement Hall and the Vestibule where the souls waited their turn.

______________________

”…and do you swear to Judge with absolute impartiality, and with absolute clarity?”

”This I vow, and will not compromise”, came the memorized response.

______________________

The door remained closed. The goddess squeezed the armrests of her throne more tightly.

”NEXT!” she boomed.

Yet the doors would not budge.

Slowly, deliberately, she rose from her seat, walked to the doors and pushed them open. The Vestibule was empty. No souls to be seen.

With a trembling hand, the goddess removed her mask, revealing the youthful face underneath. Rather beautiful, but currently marred by dark bags under the eyes and a wrathful grimace.

______________________

”…and as thus, we nominate thee, Julia, a Grand Yama of the Realm. Will you accept your duty, and vow to perform it in whatever World you are assigned?”

”I do”, came the memo-

”SHARON!”

The ferrywoman, loitering comfortably on a sofa in the psychopomp lounge, sprung up with lightning speed, eyes darting around the room in clear alarm.

”But yeah anyways Mortimer, uhh, that’s what the nomination ceremony of the boss was like. Gotta scram now bye.”

Footsepts could be heard rapidly closing in from beyond the door.

”Wow that’s kinda cool. Do you have other stories from the Higher Spheres?”

”Yeah, sure kid, but I REALLY gotta get go-”

”SHAROOONN!!!”

The door to the lounge burst inwards, shattering from the force of the Yama’s kick. She stepped in, clearly enraged, the flames of Hell flickering at her passing. With one deft movement, she faced the ferrywoman, grabbed her by the collar, and pressed her against the wall.

”Sharon”, said the Yama, tone brought ominously low, ”can you tell me what the average death rate of the Realm is at the moment?”

”Uhh, haha”, Sharon scratched the back of her head awkwardly ”it’s uhh, really on the tip off my tongue, it’s…”

”An average of 136 deaths per administrative sector per month thus far this cycle”, Mortimer interjected helpfully.

”Yeah, that!” Sharon smiled. Julia smiled too, but it was the sort of strained smile that only served as a stopgap or precursor for an angry outburst.

”Well if that is the case”, Julia said, ”Can you tell me WHY”, she tightened her grip ”THE VESTIBULE”, she was screaming now ”IS EMPTY!?”

”Well, see, that’s becau-”

”Could it PERHAPS”, a malicious glint could be seen in the Yama’s eyes, ”have something to do with the fact that YOU ARE HERE AND NOT WORKING LIKE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO?”

”Eheheheeee…”

”…”

”Maybe?”

The ferrywoman offered her best attempt at an apologetic grin. Julia, for her part, was not amused. At all.

And so, everyone had to work overtime for two days until the backlog could be sorted out. Nobody was happy about this. Not Julia, for she was the one in charge of this mess. Not the other gods, awaiting their faithful. Not the souls, who had to wait. Least of all Sharon, who received a retributive smack from the Rod of Judgement for every delayed soul. Not that she would learn from this, but still, it was the principle of the thing.

Lady Julia, the Final Judge and the Grand Yama of the High Heavens

Primal +2: Death: All things must die for their souls to be properly judged. Julia presides over the lifespans of mortal beings in due accordance, as well as their passing to the thereafter.
Primal +2: Law: All things have a way they ought to act and live their lives. Men have their rules to follow, and beasts have theirs. Julia often reminds them of this.
Apex +6: Judgement: Julia is the judge of the dead, and exerts her power over the Domain of Judgement: The act of assigning boons or as the case is more often, punishments to beings depending on how well they've adhered to the rules of propriety. Mostly reserved for use on those who are dead; Julia is the judge of the dead, after all, less so the living. However, she reserves the right to smite those who rock the boat too much...

Hunger: Stability and The Status Quo: Julia is a bureaucrat at heart, given control of a soul assorting edifice of massive proportion. She wishes for people and things to continue as they are, because undue strife tends to birth undue complications that she'd rather not deal with. She is adamant and uncompromising when it comes to keeping the peace, and having things be in their proper and appointed places.
Hunger: Rest: The Halls of Judgement are in a state of near constant overwork. Julia, for her part, only wants for things to go smoothly enough to maybe get a day off at some point you know?

Goals: Basically, Julia wants to establish an afterlife system, and then keep the transmigration of souls running all smooth like, whilst performing as a sort of lawgiver on the side. Probably going to be the level head one trying to stop other gods from rocking the boat too much in game.

The River: Great cliffs of marble near the river have fueled great works of architecture by the locals.

Here's my overelaborate app that I actually wrote up sometime this Spring for UnCO3's game because I was bored :v:

"Little by little the old world crumbled, and not once did the king imagine that some of the pieces might fall on him"

Galarian, The Ever-Giving, The Bountiful, The Blessed Waters

Once there was a river spirit. Ferolian It was harsh and demanding, giving its bounty only rarely, and demanding high sacrifices from the people living at its banks. The people feared it, but couldn't refuse it, fearing its wrath, and being bereft of its blessings. One day, there was a great drought, and the river's stream was low, and the crops threatened to fail. So, the people begged for help, but Ferolian demanded a high price. He demanded that the village surrender the handsome son of the chief, chain her to a pole, and the water would rise and water their fields, but also drown him.

The villagers tried to refuse, but the young lad volunteered, tying himself to a rock near the flood plains. As the waters started to rise, chasing away the villagers, the lad wept. But he did not weep for himself, but for the townsfolk, for the suffering they had suffered, for the suffering they might suffer in the future. And he even wept for the River God, always sounding bitter and resentful about being asked to do things, and be so hated and feared. And as the waters rose, he sang as he wept, sang of the plight of his people, and about how much they looked forward to when the water would come.

And the water would rise, but it would stop just before it would cover his mouth. And the water would stay so throughout the night, and the youth sang through the night. Then the water withdrew, and the youth was spared. When the God returned to the village, he had changed. He cast off his old name, and offered his apologies to the town. He swore he would give freely now, and all he asked is that the villagers, when they had plenty, to share freely with others. And maybe play some music for him now and then. It took a while for the villagers to trust the new god, called Galarian, but year after year he gave freely, and the words of his actions spread, and he became widely beloved. His power rose, until after some generations, Galarian was no longer a spirit, but a God.

Primal Domain: Water [+2]: The Giving water. Preferably the fresh, life giving water of the rivers and the rains, but even the salty seas deliver their bounties in the life therein.
Primal Domain: Charity [+2] The act of giving, of sharing, of helping not just the one you love most, but also others.
Apex Domains: Fertility [+6] When water gives freely to people, it turns the lands fertile.

Hunger: End to Hunter: Galarian hates seeing any sentient creature hungry, and even animals going hungry saddens him. He will freely grant his favour, even when it wasn't asked, even when gratitude is not likely to be forthcoming.
Hunger: Music: While has no power over it, and can't make music himself, Galarian loves music, and is always eager to hear it, and bestow his favor on those who make beautiful music.

River: In the Flatlands, the river floods at a predictable and regular pace, and leaves fertile soil behind, making the lands able to support large settlements.

Goals: Unsurprising, Galarian's main goal is to take care of humanity, and make sure nobody goes hungry. His happiness will generally be tied to the happiness of the least and most hungry in a society. If he knows that his time is limited, he's gonna try to make sure humanity has both the ways to produce the needed food, and the habit to make sure nobody goes hungry.

Trimahalakshmi the Triple Goddess of Purity, "She who steers / transforms / sustains us;" the Holy Trinity of Creation, Destruction, and Preservation

[+2] Primal Domain: Fire – From the Heavens the Gods brought Fire, the chaotic element of heat and destruction, of light and transformation. If given in to chaos, Fire would be allowed to devour all in its path, insatiable in its desire to consume. Controlled, however, and Fire becomes the great transformer of matter, yielding prosperity, protection, warmth, food, and light.
[+2] Primal Domain: Water – From the Heavens the Gods brought Water in its many airborne forms, falling and flowing ever-downward along hills and streams and clouds to sink endlessly toward the distant Seas beyond view. Water sustains life and creates it anew in fields and forests as vegetation and animals drink from its cool depths to grow and survive, and it guides creatures along the mighty River's banks and aids them in their travels.
[+6] Apex Domain: Purification – Where Fire and Water meet steam and smoke may be created as the forces cancel each other out - however where the essences of Fire and Water's divine elemental properties truly intersect lay in their ability to Purify. Fire scours imperfections with flame and leaves room for growth and rebirth, whereas Water washes out impurities and allows for healing and rest. Combined, Fire and Water's natures represent the distilled essence of Purity that is found in balance, in healing, and the release from all material desires.

Hungers: Harmonious Balance (Karmic Justice), Cultural Enlightenment, Cooperation

Trimahalakshmi seeks to guide her subjects (lightly) towards both a mastery of nature's elements and a mastery of the inner self, so that she may assist in the establishment of a peaceful, progressive, and transformative society. Considering that the goddess Trimahalakshmi is already formed by the fusion of three goddesses into a single divine entity, she doesn't in truth see the need for nor does she feel the desire to interact much with other Gods of the world unless it's in a matter of absolute necessity, and so she will not brook lightly any malicious interference in her carefully-laid plans. She prefers to contemplate her divine actions over the course of decades (or even centuries) while steeped in the deepest states of transcendental meditation.

The River in Trimahalakshmi's world breaks off and forms a River Delta that splits off into a Vast Sea. A settlement of seafarers and traders has taken up root there, and have caught Trimahalakshmi's attention(s).

HA HA! YOU HAVE CHOSEN POORLY!
Nochtli, The Everconsuming, The End of All Things, The Insatiable

In the beginning, as worlds were created and Life was seeded by the First Creator, Need arose. As Life grew more intricate and interconnected, so did their Needs become more critical and difficult. As Life, from the smallest, mindless particles to the mightiest beasts, became slaves to Need, the primal form of Nochtli arose. This first incarnation was a pure being, driving the creatures of Creation to their utmost, consuming their lessers to become stronger.
As Life gave rise to Man, Nochtli itself changed. Man felt Need, but Man also discovered Want. Man grasped at the world, taking as it pleased and greedily consuming vast amounts of land and resources, far beyond it's Need. Nochtli was effected by this perversion of Life, becoming stronger, yet somehow lesser, as it took the facet of Man's Gluttony. It still commands the animals of the land to consume and sate their hungers, but Nochtli can now be found in the hearts of kings, misers, bandits, anyone with the urge for take more and more for themselves.

[+2]Primal Domain: Need: All creatures know of Need. It drives everything; the lowliest plant Needs the light of the sun; the most titanic beast Needs the flesh of it's prey. No being is exempt. There is no good and evil here, it merely is.
[+2]Primal Domain: Assimilation: The strong defeat, control, and ultimately Assimilate the weak. Be it through simple digestion, the conquest of a kingdom, or even a religion converting another's followers, this is another Truth through which Nochtli makes his influence known.
[+6]Apex Domain: Gluttony: Gluttony is Need taken to it's obvious conclusion. When all Needs are met, the drive to satisfy them does not diminish. To consume and destroy beyond one's Needs, this is Gluttony.

Hungers
Self-Destruction: It is all too easy to consume an irreplaceable amount of resources, just as it is to drive oneself beyond Gluttony in satisfying ones Needs. Great men and entire empires have fallen to the drive to acquire more power, more luxury, until finally, the tower falls.
Restlessness: The drive to act is paramount to fulfilling ones Needs, but this can lead to problems as assets are destroyed and consumed before they come to their full benefit. Nochtli is not a patient God. He and those who follow him are compelled to take constant action.

Nochtli harbors a hatred for Man for inflicting upon it the curse of Want. It seeks to show Man the errors of Gluttony, and ultimately use it to scour Man from Creation. Perhaps then Nochtli will be free from it's insatiable hunger and greed.

The River: The river branches into smaller streams at a point, giving rise to a thick marsh. A primitive people dwell there.

EXCEED CHARGE
Rann, The Conquering King, the Font of Strength, the One True God

[+2] Primal Domain: Strength - Strength is the power to change the world, for without it one is nothing, free to be tread upon by anyone stronger than oneself with no way to retaliate, that is the way of things. Rann is the paragon of strength, possessing a physical strength unparalleled by any mortal. Moreover, he can grant strength to those he chooses. Rann respects strength, and expects any who follow to do the same, the fact that as the strongest he thus deserves the most respect is, of course, merely a happy coincidence.

[+2] Primal Domain: War - War, war never changes. Whenever there are people with competing desires and ideals, or even just the thirst to challenge themselves they clash, it is as eternal and inevitable as the tide. Rann is master of war, influencing the subtle tides of battle for those who earn his favor or ire, and even when it pleases him sparking that fire where none currently exists. To see people struggle and strive pleases him, for in the crucible of conflict strength is born and clarified.

[+6] Apex Domain: Conquest - Conquest is the proof of strength, the aim of war, and its Rann’s power and desire. He seeks to reach out and claim the world and all of it’s people, and to encourage those who follow him to do the same. Whether land, treasure, or even the hearts of the people Rann seeks to conquer them all and will use this power to do so, and to grant boons to others who seek to do the same. Provided, of course, that they do not interfere with his own desires.

Hungers:
Greed - What drives a conqueror, what causes him to risk death on the battlefield or ignoble defeat? It is desire, greed. Conquest is the process of seizing what one desires, and the god of conquest desires a great deal. Rann has an insatiable appetite to expand his power, his holdings, to possess the whole of the world and all things within it. This can cause him to over-reach, as something will catch his eye, that he simply must possess regardless of the cost.

Control - Rann desires to gain the world, but to possess it is not enough. What good is it to possess a thing if you cannot control it?

Goal:
Conquest - Rann desires to lay claim upon the whole of the world, and all the people and gods within. To conquer all things and all people utterly and completely, and then to remake it in his image.

River:
In a place where the river’s flow is slow and leisurely exits a great plain with many tribes, each of whom fight the others for the best land.

I still need to do a backstory but I wanted to get what I have so far up.

UnCO3
Feb 11, 2010

Ye gods!

College Slice
You get an amount of Action Points (AP) each Age/week and can spend them to perform actions (and use Domains to get bonuses for actions). You can also opt to gain FP to perform actions, but accumulating FP could have... consqeuences, so there's a limit on how many times you can safely act per Age. You then post whenever (multiple actions per post is fine) and I update fast enough that nobody waits long for a result (once or twice a day, on average). All the characters will be aware of each other at the start, so there'll probably be some amount of planning, argument, and smug sniping as well.

While there are some pretty broad-sounding Apexes, they'd actually be quite narrow in practice - mostly in terms of scope (e.g. only being able to use it on actions with one or a few mortals). In all cases, I'll be fairly hard on overstepping the bounds of an Apex, as they're a hefty bonus for a small price.

For those that didn't get in, and anyone else, there's still a way for you to get involved!

Prayers
During the first four Ages and the first half of the fifth (i.e. every week), people not playing in the game can send me prayers from mortals for the gods to answer at the start of the next Age (or the second half of the fifth). They should be sent to me privately (PM here or on synIRC, where I’m sometimes on #ohgod) and should include the text of the prayer, the god it's primarily directed at, any other relevant gods, and the situation of the person praying (which may include stuff the gods aren't initially aware of). I will then pick one prayer for each god from those I receive, keeping the rest for later Ages and filling in empty slots myself.

There are four broad types of prayer to send:
  • Intervention – a plea for material or spiritual aid to help resolve a problem the mortal can't.
  • Abstention – a plea for a god to cease doing something or to not do something.
  • Revelation – a plea for a god to reveal knowledge or give purpose.
  • Confession – a mortal reveals something to a god.
When a god acts on a prayer directed at them, they receive 1AP. Some prayers will be small-scale enough that they won't need any AP spent to resolve them. Others will be larger or trickier, but resolving them will probably be to a god's benefit.

Replacements
I'll re-open recruitment if, during the first half of the game (Ages 1-3), a player drops or their character somehow dies. However, unlike Prayers, this will only be for people who applied the first time around (and are still interested), or who post an app in the next 24 hours or so. If that applies to you, you can repeat your original app, modify it, or create a new character. The replacement will be introduced at the start of the Age following the death.

"Little by little the old world crumbled, and not once did the king imagine that some of the pieces might fall on him"

Question, since we are very much 'non established' could I change the timeline somewhat so that Galarian's change of heart from grasping and cruel river spirit to benevolent river god is very recent, so that I could have the singing youth from the background as my prophet?

Yeah, that's absolutely fine. I didn't do a good enough job making the timeline clear in this thread, so anyone, feel free to change your backstory if you feel it'd work better for the start of the game.

Also, your free action can be anything, not necessarily making a prophet. It just has to be small-scale - the first exertion of your power).

...We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you....
Edited my first post in the thread. A bit unsure on how grandly we can actually manifest, so I hope the way I went about it is acceptable.

Yeah sorry I got some personal issues to deal with and in order not to rush the post it'll happen tomorrow evening. Guess Ananke needs some time to focus in her telescopes.
