How were you able to trigger the age 16 recruitment law while only warring against Romania? The tooltip says your enemy needs to have an army at least 150% larger than yours, and you almost certainly have an army bigger than Romania's.

I sense mod jank. Also lol that you can draft 16 year olds with absolutely no downside for your country whatsoever.

Anyway, my votes:

1.) Yes, intervene and take your chunk of the Axis before the Comintern grabs it all.
2.) Germany (with the goal of taking Austria, Hungary, and Czech in the peace deal).
3.) Land and Air.

Theoretically they could, but they're also at war with the Comintern at the moment. In fact, the 30-odd German divisions that had been stationed at the Italian-Austrian border moved Northeast after war was declared. That border is still pretty barren.

Because I'm going to be a bit too busy to update tonight, I'll extend the vote out to tomorrow, at 3:15 PM Pacific Standard Time

That being said, Current votes:

Intervene in WW2: Pretty much yes- This is because, whoever we attack at this point, we'll be sticking our feet into the poo poo pile that is WW2.

Who we're going to attack:

1 vote for Hispania
2 For Germany (Though you should note that Czechoslovakia is still a free country. That being said, it's a member of the allies, who, if Sweden joins (They usually swing Allied, rather than Axis, but they've surprised me before) will get dragged into war with the USSR. Which means they will probably last all of two weeks at best, a couple days at worst. USSR Stronk.
2 For Greece
3 For Great Britain
1 For USA? (That your vote, Cathode? Or just joking about it being a(n) insane idea)

Where to focus:

Land and Air. Overwhelmingly so. I'll be closing this vote, so, only vote for Who we will be attacking next

I'll be keeping track of the previous votes for nations in addition to any new votes.

28 August 1941

Well, Gentlemen, Comrade Generals, Field Marshals, Colonels, Majors, and the like:

Victory belongs to Rome.

The Germanic mongrels have been brought to heel, and the Japanese are on the verge of defeat. Not that the Second World War- as I've been hearing it called- is over. Japan is still in the fight, after all.

Our campaign against the Nazi horde began quite normally. Justifications were sent, and our diplomats expected back within twenty days.

The battle plan was sound- General Soddu and General Cavaliero would split their armies and march their way up and into the German heartland, pushing back or encircling any Nazi soldiers in their way. The march to Berlin would be quick, efficient, and deadly.

Whilst I was reading a report on the current status of the Soviet-Finnish War (remarkably slowly) our diplomats arrived in Berlin, with the proper papers and preparatory work to do their duties.

And on 1st August, 1939, at 3:00 in the morning, the New Roman Empire entered the Second Great War by declaring war on the German Third Reich.

Technically, we were also at war with Finland, Japan, and Manchuria. I was less than worried.

Initial battles were promising- We weren't winning everywhere, the Germans, unlike our previous opponents, are rather decently trained, but, we were still winning in several places across the board, and holding our own in a couple others. If this was the best Germany could throw at us, this would be an easy campaign.

And then Hungary- The Pink nation to the right of Germany, on the above map- joined the axis, then quickly joined the war.

Messe- on the Greek border- was quickly re-tasked to hold the line at the Hungarian border, then, when capable, counter-attack into Hungary and capture Budapest.

Meanwhile, learning from some discarded German experimental tactics, we have developed our own orders of battle for Paracadutisti- that is, Paratroopers. Whilst so far I have made no use of them- we don't even have any transports, they are available in the future should we need or want them. It would certainly make an invasion of Britain or the United States somewhat easier.

Oh, right. Germany declared war on Luxembourg. It went... about as well as expected, as Luxembourg is a single province. I think they held out for a day? Maybe two?

Any day that the German barbarians are taking more casualties than we are is a good day in my books. Interestingly, according to our intelligence, we may or may not have had more army divisions than they do. I, of course, took this with a grain of salt, because when has intelligence ever been accurate?

By 17th September, we were out of the Alps, and had secured most of Austria. From then on, we were fighting in Germany proper.

Meanwhile, Hungary had heavily fortified Budapest, as their lines shrunk in upon themselves. (88 Divisions on a single tile. :wtc: And you guys thought I was kidding when I said small nations like Denmark could pull 70+ divisions out of their rear end. )

I ordered Messe to avoid the fortified Capital, after reading the morning's battle report, instead ordering him to finish encircling the city- at which point he could simply starve out the Hungarians. With no supplies, they would not last long.

German and Hungarian casualties continued to rise, whilst our own casualties doubled- which, when compared to the 170,000 enemy casualties, is very acceptable.

Messe's encirclement completed, the General began his siege upon Budapest. Starved of supplies, and with elite Italian soldiers marching further into the city on all sides, it was only a matter of time.

Who wanted to go to war with Spain, again? Well, you've gotten your wish, I suppose. Not that the Spaniards put up much of a fight. Sad, really.

And then, at Midnight on October the 13th, 1939, the first Italian infantry division entered Berlin.

By midday the 14th, Berlin had officially fallen- abandoned by the German government, or, rather, what was left of it. Hitler was found dead in his bunker, having committed suicide by pill, as well as pistol. The end was in sight for the Third Reich, yet they still stubbornly fought on- not for a glorious "Thousand Year Reich" as they so arrogantly flaunted years earlier, but for their survival as an organized people. Italia, however, has a very, very long memory. We remember what happened last time the Germanic barbarians were allowed to thrive. No longer will they be a proud, organized people. They will be spread among labor camps, and used to build up Italian interests- Factory work, rail laying, anything and everything, so that we Italians may focus on other important pursuits. Once the Glory of the Roman Empire is restored, and we no longer have use of a slave labor force, we can look back and see what we wish to do with them.

And then on October 22nd, Hungary capitulated, it's government surrendering early in the morning to the Italian troops. Their soldiers were out of ammunition, emaciated, and broken-willed. For them, the war was over.

For over half a million Hungarians, though, the surrender was too late. Requiescat in pace. You fought Harder and better than the Germans, Hungary. For that, you should be proud.

Moving on, our Air innovations continue. Several manufacturers have begun to make some very interesting advances in the field of air warfare, which I have been monitoring with interest.

However, we could not simply ignore Spain, as much as I'd have liked to. So, Comrade Marmora's son, Francesco, a recent graduate of our Military Academy, and untested in the field, but our only free General at the moment, was given command of ten divisions of Marine riflemen, and orders to conduct an invasion of Hispania.

Meanwhile, we have a new Heavy Armor model- our first, actually, entering production. Once enough of these are manufactured, I plan on making them their own separate divisions- slow, but powerful, made to break through enemy lines and open up gaps for our faster tanks to rush through.

I find it personally hilarious that the world thinks Hitler is still alive. I guess they haven't heard the news yet. (For that matter, neither have our own papers... Which buffoon ordered this article printed?)

America, meanwhile, continues to focus on it's own sphere of influence, remaining an Isolationist bastion of Democracy.

Japanese diplomats, meanwhile, flew to Berlin, only to find Berlin decidedly Roman in ownership. They were respectfully sent rear end-over-teakettle back to Japan.

Following on earlier light air frame advancements, our sparse bomber fleet was looked at, and several competing manufacturers are now placing bids on modernizing the Bomber fleet. A win-win, in my eyes.

The French, meanwhile, announced their pursuits of a dedicated Nuclear Program. Something to watch, carefully.

Meanwhile, our infantry equipment was upgraded again- this time focusing on modernizing our light machine guns and mortar designs. All-in-all, I'm expecting an increase in effectiveness across the board.

And then, Finally, on the 9th of February, 1940, the last hold-outs of German resistance in Germany surrendered to Italian forces. A pathetic campaign, hardly worth mention, followed by a wimper of death from Germany. So much for a Thousand Year Reich.

The Same advances that were seen in our mortars and machine guns were modeled in our actual infantry equipment- new grenade models were distributed, among other important things, such as fixing reliability issues in our recent runs of Sub machine guns.

Our diplomats sent out feelers to the USSR for military access- we had to reach Finland and Japan somehow, after all- and were pleasantly surprised when the USSR agreed to give us access- no strings attached.

And then I heard wind of rumors that the United Kingdom was preparing for war with us. I quickly made the proper defensive arrangements, in case those rumors prove true.

Marmora's campaign successful, but impeded slightly by the British- who pushed north from Gibraltar, and the French- who pushed south from France- Marmora was quickly ordered to have his troops man the British border- if the Allies decided to declare war on us for real, rather than threaten it, we could very quickly push south and capture the Strait of Gibraltar, with little resistance from the token British garrison.

We also improved upon our computing machines, making them even faster and more efficient than before. This ought to make our research and orders go somewhat more faster.

We also improved upon our Marines' order of battle, promoting them to a full-fledged Divisional type, rather than a provisional, as they proved themselves rather capable against the Spaniards.

We also continue with our dispersal of our industry. Whilst this may seem a bit strange, moving our industries farther apart, in the event of an enemy strategic bombing campaign on our homeland, our industry will be drastically less affected by enemy bombardments, giving us more production in such an event.

We also finally approve the Beretta arms company's production bid, allowing them to completely take over material production in regards to infantry equipment. With their sole focus being on such, new advancements may come more quickly, and the productivity may increase as well (Sadly, only the research bonus is modeled in-game.)

Because Germany is rife with partisan opposition- Former soldiers, civilians attempting to escape labor camp internment, resistance fighters, etc.- I have ordered the creation of a dedicated military police division. (Note: As far as I know, this Divisional composition, combined with the Military Police Support Battalion, is the most effective for suppressing resistance in conquered states)

Japan is also on it's way out the door. It may not be completely apparent yet, Gentlemen, but please, direct your attention to the top right of the map.

The Russians have landed on Japan's mainland. The formerly fortress of an island, which I personally was worried about having to launch an invasion of, has been cracked- by the Russians, no less, saving us hundreds of thousands of potential casualties having to do the same at a later date.

Again, whilst I currently have made no plans to use our new paratrooper divisions, some notes from a German Officer named Kurt Student- captured from the Luftwaffe headquarters in Berlin- outlining an order of battle for a tentative invasion of Crete. Whilst these plans- and the officer, apparently, were largely ignored by Hitler's Reich, I feel that they could prove beneficial to our fledgling Paratrooper Doctrine. As such, I have ordered several other military officers to look over the notes, find mistakes, and discover ways to implement these plans in our own paratrooper units.

Also focusing on the Air Force, Macchi has presented us with it's new aircraft design- the C.202 Folgore. I expect interesting things from the innovative design, which has several key differences from it's predecessor, the Saetta.

Meanwhile, I've received news that the USSR has captured the Japanese city of Asahigawa, in northern Japan. Take this as you will.

Also of interest, Leon Trotsky, apparently hiding out in Mexico, survived an assassination attempt in Mexico City. Quite interesting, and telling of the Capabilities of the Soviet Empire's political maneuvering, don't you agree?

We also improve upon our infrastructure and rail lines in Libya, in the event that we go to war with the UK at some point.

While all this was happening, General Soddu's force finished their trek across the USSR to Leningrad, and immediately marched north into Finland, breaking the Finnish line wide open. I'm quite shocked that the Russians hadn't wiped them off the face of the Earth yet.

The campaign was disappointingly short, and the Finns put up no fight whatsoever. I did hear about a rather promising marksman named Simo Häyhä, though, who apparently killed over five hundred Russians in a hundred days. If I ever get to meet the man, I'd like to shake his hand for exemplary service to his country- regardless of how poor it's army is on average.

Oh, and Siam, who'd been dragged into the war by Japan? I guess? (They never joined my war with Germany, so I can only speculate. They only fought the Comintern.)

Meanwhile, having finished their fight in Finland, Soddu's twenty divisions soon landed in northern Japan to fight alongside the Russians- repayment for their aid in the Romanian campaign, as well as their tying up of German divisions during our own invasion.

Focusing back on our air forces, Fiat threw their own hat into the manufacturing ring with the G.55 Centauro- a superb design that is slowly replacing the Saettas and Folgores that came before it. Whilst they were excellent designs in their own right, Fiat's plane is at the very least three years ahead of the competition technology-wise.

Our land doctrine continues as well, with a rudimentary combination of infantry, armored, and mechanized arms that we are currently referring to as "Assault Concentration".

Our assembly lines once more improve as well, as our surpluses swell to safe levels.

Our twenty divisions also cracked the twenty-three Japanese (And German, to my surprise) divisions, allowing the Russians to push further Southward into Japan. That being said, the Japanese have locked down a causeway, and the Soviet Campaign has ground to a standstill. Our troops will remain on the mainland for now, but I think it wiser to let the Soviets throw men and material at the problem as much as they want. The Japanese will surrender, eventually, and I am incredibly patient.

A relatively up-to-date casualty list for your perusal. As you can see, we've lost a combined total of 232,000 men across all branches of the military. On the other hand, our enemies, Germany, Japan, Finland, and Hungary, have lost a combined total of around 1,800,000 men, give or take 50,000. The disparity, in my opinion, is quite telling.

In preparation for future possible invasions- namely Britain, Australia and New Zealand, or America- I have also requested our primary naval manufacturers to look into improvements to our (rather rudimentary) landing craft, using General Marmora's amphibious invasion of Spain as a benchmark.

And, finally, the United Kingdom debates intervention in France. I'm sure this will end swimmingly.

To conclude today's briefing, here is a map of the current state of affairs in Europe.

My question to you, Gentlemen, is:

Where do we go from here?

edit: Missed a bracket

If it was hearts of iron 3, I'd agree with you. Germany sucks balls in Hoi 4 unless you're the one playing it. Basically what happened is after going to war with Russia they shoved all their units off my border and onto their border with France (remember, France went Comintern), or up to Finland. Some also made their way to Japan, but I'm guessing that's an expeditionary force being controlled by Japan- the AI adores doing that. It was kinda disappointing- I busted through the 8 divisions that Germany left behind like a hot knife through butter, and squished about half their army between my army and the French Maginot Line, which in HOI 4 is a line of level 10 forts all the way across Alsace. (With each level of Fort granting a whopping -15% combat penalty.)

The main killer was them not guarding the border, though. If they'd actually contested me back in the alps, I'd have gotten royally trashed, simply because the terrain favors the defender. (It also makes me wish I'd gone with Hearts 3, in which the AI is much smarter, but I digress)

A bit late on joining the Comintern, we've already decided on Italy First...

Difficulty comes and goes. Sometimes it's horrendously difficult to make any headway (invading England once they have their fuckoff navy and airforce? Good luck. Same for the US) but often the AI is loving retarded. Paradox is working on this with their patches, but it's a pretty new game, all things considered, so they're still working out the kinks.

That being said HOI 4 is supposed to be easier than HOI 3 from what I've seen. It's more casual and laid back, and it's a lot easier for new players to pick up. That part I honestly like about it, simply becuase of more people discovering the greatness that are paradox games.

If I was going to re-do the LP, I'd have run Black Ice mod, or played HOI 3, but at this point eh. Can't be helped. I mean, I could feasibly restart with Black Ice and see if HOI 4 has a console or something to put everything the way it was pre-switch over, but im generally terrible at that sort of thing.

Something I would consider might be starting over with Black Ice after we remake the Glorious Roman Empire, depending on how long it's been.
