Alan Wake has a ton of invisible walls, except you can find ways to bypass them. He can't swim unless it is a cutscene.

I spent way too much time trying to do everything I can to mess with the game. Beside meeting the other people on the boat (I think you missed a plot point) and having extended conversations with several characters in the game, there is a bug where you get five batteries as you entered the cabin and lose them all when you exit and come back in.

By the way you can get a look at the island if you turn around before the bridge and climb back up the hill. There's coffee and a "focus" thing up there that goes to an overhead view of the island.
There were a few he missed in the tutorial segment, like by the bridge straight from his car and that pillbox. I was very thorough and only found 85 without a guide and it was for an achievement anyway. I SAM'd that. Some achievements are just wastes of time. I really wanted them to affect his stamina and make NG+ better. A fatty has better stamina than him.

By the way, here's the overhead shot of the island that Kibayasu mentioned. Alan even has a blurb to say about the island and the lake being on top of a volcano :psyduck:
A large number of islands have been created by volcanoes. If the cabin from built on anything but an extinct volcano, I would be very worried.

While I liked Alan Wake, this kind of goes into one of the big reasons why I think Deadly Premonition is the better game. Both games wear their inspiration on their sleeves; both are heavily inspired by Twin Peaks and as previously stated Alan Wake is Stephen King as hell, but Alan Wake is just content in just emulating them a lot without really doing much of its own thing while DP goes off of Twin Peaks' path and into its own direction. DP is a lot more clever with its narrative conceits as well, what Alan Wake tends to do is just spoil stuff that's going to happen through the collectible script pages, but DP actually messes with the preconceptions of someone who's played video games before when it comes to a certain character.
One advantage Alan Wake has over DP is that it works for the PC. People might not even get to play much of DP without running into many errors that might corrupt the game.

The hotel is a fun place to mess around in until it kills you.

Back in the jail, you can turn the light off again and the drunk doesn't like that at all.

You can see the moving car where you started and it already was damaged.

No invisible walls to save you from falling. I don't know what the experiment was with random walls that prevent you from going into certain places or walls that stop you from moving forward that you can jump over to break through.

Nothing loaded.

Good thing some objects did. Also, the walls physically exist, but it won't block your flashlight.

This is from behind the walls.

I randomly decided to screenshot a license plate that clearly says Washington. It has a unique texture in the game, as every other vehicle uses a low-res texture that looks straight out of a PS1 game. I apparently knew it was going to stick out, because this game has some weird design decisions. Is my computer messing with me?

Around here is where the deputies die from the invisible thing. It is called a poltergeist, which I don't think the game explicitly called it that until the sequel. There is a spot where you can go down the cliff and reach the lower level, but you see the death fall of Alan crumpling into a heap as he falls a few feet.

Here is a much higher fall you can take and survive, just for comparison's sake. It is in bounds, so no death drop.

Scalding Coffee

It isn't much, but you can look around some coal sites on your way to the coal mine. I thought it was yet another death drop since there is nothing there.

There was an incorrect wood texture in the rock. There is also a very long path below the road that leads to a dead end.

A thing of note are that a number of trees in the background on your way to the train yard, seem to be pixels and turn to face your direction when you move around. The dead sprites do the same thing in the first Doom.

There are spots where Alan can make it down to Barry, but the game will still kill you soon after for trying.

Back at the area when you were disarmed, if you run at large movable objects like mine carts, Alan will push them with such force that it sounds like a small explosion. Of course, he is barely moving them, but it sounds like he has Hulk powers.

Here is me walking on Barry, who is moving around as well, knocking me off in an instant. I am prevented from walking on the Sheriff later on, due to building design.

A weird place to put grass and earth, since it is entirely water.

Along the way, there is a fallen power pole that will kill you after enough time. You can walk through it and on top of it, to ignore the shock.

Kibayasu posted:

That wagon at 24:08, you stepped on it briefly and it kept moving. Can you make Alan Wake ride a red wagon?

Also I hope you go back and show all of Barry calling the townsfolk

That one object has a unique and weird collision detection. You can ride the thing a bit, but it embeds itself into the ground.

If you last long enough, that tower defense segment starts spawning bosses behind you at fixed intervals and he will likely kill you in a three hit combo before you notice.

The tv still plays if you turn it off. The apartment is haunted. Poltergeists/Darkness are hanging around outside the building.

They made the boss fight look easy. That fucker kept smashing into the ground and sweeping across for a sure hit, that it was an endurance test to survive. It broke the whole floor of the bridge and I didn't want to move from there. Another failure state.

Not sure if it becomes a thing later in the game, but they are missing out with not combining your other powers with super sprint, but not give you the power to use that kinetic force to blow apart doors and walls. You time stop someone and then punch them, they should either catch fire from all the friction you are making on an object in stasis or blow them apart like you are a hulk. Brave Starr would have been so awesome.

I saw the requirements for the game and even with my rig, I am worried about wasting my money and time, since it looks even less optimized than the Wolfenstein games.

Youtube is rolling out some more fun rules about censoring whatever they want over the next few months, so it might get to the point where disparaging the bad guys is a bad thing, because it might be extremist talk.

Looking forward to how AN changes everything up. Not looking forward to how hard it is to make your own fun. They did fix the collision detection of objects merging together, like those chairs I painstakingly tapped to surround people.

I am going to miss jumping on the heads of people now that we are off Alan Wake. I did come across a PSX game where you are able to walk on other people's heads and they move around like nothing is wrong. I do like taking the piss out of the characters as well, but they develop a better personality than Alan Wake.
