The first round is not very scintillating, I admit. Turn 1-2-4 - It is Greece's turn! Greece plays IDEA SYNERGY:quote:IDEA SYNERGY - Play this card after getting an advance. Gain 2 Ideas. A reminder: after this round is the first Status Phase. As part of that, you'll gain a free tech, and an extra action and objective card. Turn 1-3-1 - It is Egypt's turn! If people could call out what they want their free end-of-round techs to be ahead of time, that'll make updating a bit faster - if you're not sure or if it depends on someone else's pick, don't worry too much about it, though. Egypt techs up en masse, and I'm still not really sure why Priesthood catapults Science. Turn 1-3-2 - It is Japan's turn! Japan becomes an Autocracy! Interesting to see the level of teching up going on here. Egypt's start is a textbook tech rush from the non-expansion version that just happens to align with its national techs. I did not expect to see an Autocracy so early but it's a good way to spawn new dudes. Soon going to be time to start hunting down territory, though. Tall cities are unquestioningly better in Clash of Cultures - more size, more resources gained - but the activation system means it's best to have two big cities that you can alternate between, sizing up one with the resources gathered by the other. In case people are being hesitant, it's important to note that Settlers or Leaders will never be attacked by Barbarians, at least via standard means - barbarian camps only raid cities. Turn 1-3-2 - It is Persia's turn! Retro Futurist posted:Yeah that was my plan. So how do I expand? You can increase the size of a city by activating it and spending 1 Food, 1 Wood, 1 Ore - but you can only do that if you have enough cities. To increase a city to size 2, you've got to have 2 cities. (You also need to have the right tech - Tactics for Fortress, Writing for Academy, Myths for Temple, Fishing for Port, Bartering for Market, Art + Sculptures for Obelisk, Mathematics for Apothecary.) To found a new city you've just got to move your Settler somewhere, and use the Found City option. You can't build on Barren land, but you can build anywhere else. You can even build adjacent to an existing city - but a city cannot gather from a hex that has another city on it, so it'll restrict your gather options.

It won't hurt to have an Army around. If nothing else, bopping Barbarians is a pretty good source of early-game Gold, which acts as a wildcard resource. ... why is my condensed rules missing them completely? Ugh. Okay, they're listed in the full rules, but a quick overview:
I've updated the condensed rules in the OP / the latest post to reflect this. My apologies for, uh, managing to totally forget it.

You've only got one settler - the other is your Leader, who can give bonuses to armies or cities he's with. Which is not to say you can't move him as well, if you want to get exploring. Normally, water is forced to the edge of the map where possible - but again, the cardinal rule is 'don't drown units', so the tile is flipped. Pirates appear! Pirates are less annoying than Barbarians, pretty much. Whenever you draw an Event with a Pirate Raid, you'll lose a resource or a Mood for each pirate ship within 2 spaces of one of your cities, limit one per city. Then, you get to send them off elsewhere to harass someone else. Defeating Pirates gets you 1 Gold and 1 Mood, but obviously you need some ships to do it. Turn 1-3-2 - It is Persia's turn! Two moves, two actions remain. Sorry, Egypt, but I'll be a bit egotistical and not place that additional army in "my" camp.
