Our favourite game starring everyone's favourite green soldier.

Yoshi's Story is the 2nd game in the Yoshi series that sees players directly taking control of everyone's favourite green dinosaur. Released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 , developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo.

The story of the game is, ironically, very simple. The island that the Yoshi's live on (a "Yoshi's Island", if you will) has been turned into a story book by Baby Bowser who has also stolen The Super Happy Tree, the source of all happiness on the island. Luckily some Yoshi's that were unhatched before their island was turned into a pop-up book are born into the world and are not effected by the appearance of their surroundings because this is all they have known since birth and it is likely going to be really weird for them when everything goes back to normal.

Yoshi's Story has always felt a bit like a sleeper hit or a cult classic or whatever you want to call a piece of media that didn't get the recognition you think it deserved at the time. It came out in the same year that saw the release of Banjo-Kazooie, Ocarina of Time and F-Zero X to name a few of the bigger titles that would accompany it on the system within the span of a few months. Though despite being released fairly early in the year it never seemed to garner much attention. Though it's predecessor, Yoshi's Island, is often talked about and almost revered by some, I don't often see its quite frankly ridiculously adorable follow up talked about very much, and have yet to see a long thinkpiece about the psychology of Yoshi's Story. Though admittedly I have yet to see a similar article about Yoshi's Island either but I'm sure it exists somewhere.

The absence of an incessant baby's cry, lovingly rendered by the Super FX Chip, every time you took damage was a welcome addition to this game, and the most recent addition to the series, Yoshi's Wooly World, feels more like it's paying homage to this game than Yoshi's Island which Nintendo have attempted to re-capture the magic of twice and neither attempt went very well in my opinion. Regardless of the highly subjective topic of what does or does not improve a game however, I'm not here to try and pit Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story against each other, honestly I love both games but I have a lot more familiarity with the latter and think it would be nice to shine the spotlight on one of the lesser talked about Yoshi games.

In summary: Nobody talks about this game and that's criminal because it's super fun and adorable, So me and my good buddy Gertrude Perkins are gonna make some videos together that you can watch. thank you.

Heck YEAH we're talking about Yoshi's Story! I hope you folks are in the mood for some adorable graphics, grating catchy MIDI music, and surprisingly intricate level design!

Yoshi's Story owns, but I'm not sure how well the sort of Star Fox-esque level progression and score attack design focus were advertised at the time, which are what I imagine soured most people on it. I know as a dumb kid I was really disappointed that I "beat" this game in about an hour after first getting it. But yeah it's cute and the level design is actually pretty good and there's a lot of replayability in trying to get all those dang melons (though some of the minigames are kinda bad imo) and the music owns!

I got this game with a second hand N64 in the early 00s and was surprisingly annoyed at it. I found it too easy, short and repetative because I didn't have an instruction manual and therefore didn't know about the getting 30 melons aspect of the game. (It was also pre-internet for me so I couldn't look it up either.)

Yoshi's Story has a special place in my heart: it's the first game that made me truly realize that I had played enough games over the years to develop a pointed opinion on them. Before this game, I just played whatever looked neat and didn't think too much of it. This one's the first game that I took a look at and had grown up enough to tell myself "Yoshi's Island was really fantastic and Nintendo's games have almost all been great but this no-brainer sequel somehow really looks like trash, no thanks".

Everyone in the thread seems to really love this game, but I couldn't disagree more. I hated Yoshi's Story as a kid, and it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. It was my second-least favorite game that I played for the N64, only behind the Gex: Enter the Gecko port that had worse graphics, less '90s-as-gently caress one-liners, and less levels. After the masterpiece that was Yoshi's Island- which was hard as hell but oh-so-satisfying to 100%- a Yoshi game that was dead simple and could be completed in a single playthrough was something that didn't sit well with me. You couldn't even do cool ricochet tricks with your eggs. That was part of the fun of Yoshi's Island. Sure, you could spice things up and get all of the cantaloupes in every level you played, but you didn't get extra features or levels for doing so. It just made the game somewhat harder. Nintendo Power promoted it as a "2-and-a-half-D game," but I didn't feel like it was at all. It was just a 2D game with branching paths in some parts. And I think that lack of difficulty and rewards for doing the more difficult path through levels was part of the reason why Yoshi's Story is a forgotten game in the Nintendo library, along with the aforementioned games with more hype and more to do in them.

I also wasn't a fan of the graphical style. The game looks like a Yoshi-themed nursery. The prevailing insult towards late '90s Nintendo was "their games are too cutesy and for little kids," and Yoshi's Story was the prime example you could point at. Looking back, there's a child-like theme to Yoshi's Island as well, but that's a game where you escort a baby across an island, so it made sense thematically. There's no obvious reason why they went with this particular theme in Yoshi's Story- it's a storybook, so why not make it more book-like? I'm thinking of a sketchbook theme like Yoshi's Island or Kirby's Dream Land 3, but with more opportunities to show off the N64's graphical power. The level music is all just variations of the same theme.

What I hated the most about it, and (sadly) what ended up being the game's most lasting legacy, were those loving baby voices the Yoshis have. It's about as annoying as hearing Baby Mario cry. The weird noises Yoshi made on the SNES were cool, there was no reason to change them... certainly not to that. But to this day, Yoshi still has that voice, and this game marked its debut. gently caress those voices, they can burn in hell.

All that being said... I love Dex's LPs, so I'll definitely watch this in spite of my numerous complaints about Yoshi's Story.

I personally really enjoyed this game because it was my intro in Yoshi. It's be no means great. But it was one that I could rent time and time again at a young age. And because I could finish it in a single play through it suited the seven dollars I paid for the week I got to keep it.

Game theory was stupid even before that horrendous tweetstorm that probably should have just been an essay on Medium. Protip: that's what you should instead do if you want to string together 50+ tweets.

Anyway, for all my gripes about Yoshi's Story, the sewer background is cool and so are the kickin' jams that accompany it.

Well that last level was obnoxious, both in terms of design and the constant Goonie sounds. The third level also had annoying enemy noises with the Shy Guys. The few times I rented it I just went through the water levels.

I liked the Nintendo logo cameo in the background of one of them. There are some nice touches in Yoshi's Story but in my mind, the bad outweighs the good. Even with my wall of text rant, though, it's more forgettable to me than anything else.

That thing that Yoshi rides on in 6-2 is a ghost. They look much goofier here than their slightly menacing, bushy-eyebrowed counterparts in Yoshi's Island. Again, I'm not a fan of Yoshi's Story's aesthetics.

I'm very much looking forward to your Yooka-Laylee LP. I've heard that it's not a full-blown disaster like Mighty No. 9, but it is flawed. Hopefully you're not down on it like Nuts & Bolts.
