The western world got screwed over on 8-bit soundtracks since the NES didn't have sound expansion capabilities.

If you imported the Famicom from Japan though, many cartridges had extra sound chips inside that added more channels than the ones included in the base system.

Both Zelda, Metroid and Castlevania has much nicer soundtracks on the Famicom
