Outlast 2 is the sequel to 2013 indie horror hit Outlast from developer Red Barrels

Steam Store page posted:

Set in the same universe as the first game, but with different characters and a different setting, Outlast 2 is a twisted new journey into the depths of the human mind and its dark secrets.

Outlast 2 introduces you to Sullivan Knoth and his followers, who left our wicked world behind to give birth to Temple Gate, a town, deep in the wilderness and hidden from civilization. Knoth and his flock are preparing for the tribulations of the end of times and you’re right in the thick of it.

You are Blake Langermann, a cameraman working with your wife, Lynn. The two of you are investigative journalists willing to take risks and dig deep to uncover the stories no one else will dare touch.

You're following a trail of clues that started with the seemingly impossible murder of a pregnant woman known only as Jane Doe.
The investigation has lead you miles into the Arizona desert, to a darkness so deep that no one could shed light upon it, and a corruption so profound that going mad may be the only sane thing to do.

We’ve traded dilapidated asylums and amoral corporations for isolated deserts and redneck cults! Exciting!

Outlast was praised for well-crafted level design and atmosphere as well as effectively translating the idea of found-footage into a video game. But it was also criticized (particularly the Whistleblower DLC) for relying heavily on explicit nudity, gore, and general shock value in its horror. Has Outlast 2 moved away from the latter to focus on more tense, psychological horror?

Drunken Baker posted:

Outlast 2 has been banned in Australia due to strong sexual violence.

Took this from Kotaku. (first google hit)

In one cut-scene in the game ... a female creature prepares Blake for a ritual. She says, "I want to see your true face. Your seed will burn this world." Shortly afterwards, he objects to having psycho-active dust blown into his face, yelling, "Nope! Nope!" before he stumbles into a forest clearing.

His vision blurring, he witnesses what appears to a ritualistic orgy. His wife, Lynn, calls out for his help, saying, "It hurts! Oh god!," as she hangs from chains on a raised platform at the front of the clearing. Humanoid creatures, their skin grey, spattered with blood and scarred, implicity have sex as others pray, or chant, or gesticulate.

One creature has another bent over a rock, thrusting as they implicitly have rear-entry sex, another sits astride the pelvic region of a creature prone on the ground, moving their hips rhythmically as they too implicitly have sex. Two other pairs of creatures in the clearing are also implicitly having sex.

As Blake yells for the creatures to "Get away from her!" a female creature, her greyish breasts bared, pushes him onto his back, holds his arms to the ground and repeatedly thrusts her crotch against him. As Blake protests, saying "No! Stop that!" the creature thrusts again, before placing its face over his midsection and then sitting up and wiping its mouth.

Although much of the contact between the creature and Blake is obscurred, by it taking place below screen, the sexualised surroundings and aggressive behaviour of the creature suggest that it is an assault which is sexual in nature. The Board is of the opinion that this, combined with Blake's objections and distress, constitutes a depiction of implied sexual violence.

In the Board's opinion, the above example constitutes a depiction of implied sexual violence and therefore cannot be accommodated within the R18+ classification category and the game is therefore Refused Classification.

Probably not!

A demo was released for the game late last year, but has since been removed from all platforms. However, you can probably still watch on whichever shrieking millennial hipster’s YouTube channel you prefer if you want to get an idea of what the game will be like. The full game will be released on April 25th on PC, PS4, and XB1. Console gamers will also get Outlast: Trinity, a collection of Outlast 1, Whistleblower, and Outlast 2 for 40 USD. What a deal!

Yup. I'm just gonna buy this game for like ten dollars or less. Launch price is $20 right? It's probably going to be a more reasonable game for ten bucks and finish it in two weekend nights. Plus we already know how re7 beat it to the punch of redneck horror.

This is a great chance for them to expand and deepen the mechanics of the first game, and I hope they succeed, even if RE7 truly took the wind outta their sales here.

I like gory, outlandish horror movies and I think there was a bit more to the first Outlast than fits into the accepted narrative of it being a dumb bad game, so I am stoked.

Unless there are different versions for different regions, that scene got cut almost entirely.

Can we temporary Australian it and buy it early?

Ill tell you of a magic thing that will let you playthrough without fear! They have programs that could make you invisible to the bad guys in outlast 1. Maybe they can do it with cheat engine, you would have to use google.

I don't think it will stop you from getting scared though, you would need to record the game then have someone screen it for you. It could be expensive, and the lag would be nuts.

John Wolfe, formerly HarshlyCritical is putting up his playthrough. He's a pretty level-headed guy, who doesn't play up his reactions and his commentary is reasonably entertaining. However, he's putting up his videos in 30-40 minutes chunks, so it'll likely take him a couple days to have the full thing up.

There's also this no-commentary streamed full playthrough but I have no idea the quality of it.

Saya No Uta 2 looking good

E. But really, the first one had over the top male sexual stuff but it was interesting because it was a (possible accidental) commentary on how fragile men are about that kind of stuff, given the response to the game. Whistleblower turned it up a notch and made it even more clear, to the point of being grotesque. I guess now they are just plowing ahead at full speed to see how far they can get before they can stop pretending to do it for an actual reason other than torture porn.

I mean it's an upside down cross first and foremost, not to mention the majority of iterations of that name design don't have it on fire, that's just an exxtraw dawrk version or something.

You put a flaming cross in your logo, you don't get to pretend it's a neutral symbol. (note not you you) It's not like the worst thing ever, but it's crass. Like low merit exploitation films.

I mean for a normal game I might write it off as them just trying to edge even more out of the "upside down cross means satan" thing, but in a game specifically about redneck cultists it is kind of obvious.

Reviews are coming in and they're fairly consistent in ranking it a 7-8/10 game. Lots of praise for the graphics, sound design, and flashbacks sequences scattered throughout the game, lots of criticism of the stealth sections being too trial-and-error.

It also gave the Polygon reviewer PTSD or something so that's a thing.

Is it worth $20 of my American dollars (or $28 I guess for the bundle on PS4)?

$28 for both of them? Yeah, I'd say so. The first Outlast was pretty nerve wracking and there are wieners everywhere. It's chockablock with the most terrifying wieners you will ever see.

Looking forward to watching this millennial hipster's playthrough. Hahah. I'm not a fan of these "hide and seek" kinda horror games, but I love watching them if the person knows what they're doing and edits out and repeated deaths (The thing that puts me off playing them.)

Watching Jay from RLM play Outlast one was really good in an adorable kinda way. The dude hasn't really played games since the SNES days and was fighting to get to grips with the dual analogue sticks, but when he did he was absorbed with the game... Until the aforementioned repeated deaths and constantly hiding in a cupboard over and over.

About halfway through it, the game is kinda meh. It feels like the stealth degraded from the DLC even though now you can hide in bush but most stealth parts just have you double back to lose the bad guys instantly. Sometimes the bad guys even despawn once you lose them. I have a feeling that I can somewhat guess the twist because its so heavy handed with the dream sequences.
