in the early 2000s memes were just image macros. those died away and the internet got over them. then in the past five years memes seemed to make a resurgence. nowadays they're all irony, abstract, non-sequitar, self-aware.

why have memes reemerged? what explains their popularity in this day and age?

Nothing to see here.
I noticed the way people (over)use the word meme has changed. in the old internet times you didn't really call something a meme unless it had "earned" it by going viral, but now any image with some text pasted on it is a dank meme regardless of how popular it actually is.

Nothing in Jurassic World is natural, we have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other animals. And if the genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different. But you didn't ask for reality, you asked for more teeth.

I think it's because people like having a joke that they're in on, whether a catch phrase from a popular show or an obscure movie quote. But now anyone can make a meme and contribute to a joke for other people to enjoy, which is pretty cool.

they were sent back in time from decades in the future by skynet via the t1000's memetic poly alloy. the first memes were knives and stabbing weapons, and it went on from there
