In the land of Wells there is a great castle. In that castle sits the One True King. Surrounding that castle, however, are unsettled lands, home to monsters. In the Great Calamity ten years ago monsters overrun the lands of the One True King and displaced the good people from their homes.

For the last decade they have taken refuge in the great castle Impervious and prepared for the day when they could take back their lands. The former lords and ladies of the realm are all dead, killed in the Great Calamity, and so the King has used his great wisdom to select new Lords and Ladies to take back the realm and rebuild the shattered castles, eventually driving the monsters entirely from the land!

Character Creation goes as follows:
You have the following Aspects
  • Courtly Manners- The ability to keep your cool and influence people.
  • Faith- Your faith in the One True King and God, can grant miracles in times of extreme need.
  • Honor- The ability to maintain composure under torture or pain and the skill of true friendship.
  • Lord(or Lady)ship- The ability to rule and govern, including math.
  • Magic- The ability to use rituals to change many things.
  • Warfare- The ability to Fight and Command an Army.
Choose one at Good (+3), two at Fair (+2), two at Average (+1), and one at Mediocre (+0) as per normal for FAE. Starting Refresh is 3, with 1 free stunt.

I have some castle rules but they're not quite ready yet, but they'll be using the Fate Fractal, so castles and realms will work at least partially like characters, so don't worry too much about it until you've actually cleared a plot to build.

I'm thinking of structuring the game around Three Phase 'Turns'
You have the War phase, where you claim new land
The Build Phase where you put up new structures
and the Govern phase where you deal with regular people's problems

Totally forgot but if you have questions, comments, etc you can reach me at my discord

...We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you....
High Adjudicator Annabelle Tjarn

Always a strict, deliberate one. A stickler to details. Slow to anger, but an unstoppable engine of wrath when incensed enough. Reasonable, but utterly uncompromising of her core values. Diligent and authoritative, without being abusive. These were the many traits that caused Annabelle Tjarn to rise through the judicial sects like a shooting star, until she was finally nominated High Adjudicator, the highest rank one could attain in such a field, and rewarded a noble title as per her prestigious rank.

As High Adjudicator, Annabelle is the highest legal arbitrator in the lands, with her word on such matters overpowering all other voices other than that of His Majesty. Indeed, as her mandate is given by the King himself, she also functions as a religious official, her judgments based on theocratic authority just as much as civil and secular. She runs a tight ship, with a sect of holy, militant warriors known as Justicars handling the policing, and inquisitorial sects holding constant vigil for disturbance to His Most Resplendent Majesty's Holy Order, which conveniently doubles as heresy, most of the time.

However, though zealous and uncompromising, the High Adjudicator has a keen administrative sense, and is not prone to foolish decisions despite what some might think due to her strict and often rigid attitude. And whilst she is not forgiving, she sees when His Majesty's justice is properly meted out, and is not prone to cruel or excessive punishment.

Organized, faithful, and well versed in the arts of law, both Common and Noble, and surrounded by skillful retainers (indeed, Annabelle has a particularly keen eye for talent in others, which she expertly uses to plug her own shortcomings), Annabelle sets out to bring Law and Justice back to the lands from which it was taken.

Aspects:
Courtly Manners: 2
Faith: 2
Honor: 1
Ladyship: 3
Magic: 1
Warfare: 0

High Concept: High Adjudicator
Annabelle is an authority figure of the establishment first, a noble only second (indeed, her nole title was a reward, instead of an inheritance). Whilst she has a manner suitable for dealing with other nobles, she is much more interested in her civil work, that of organizing the realm and reinstituting His Majesty's law back to the lands.

Trouble: Rigid Theocrat
Annabelle is clever, and good at her job. However, her desire for perfection and clarity in all rulings and laws can on occasion work against her. The layered ecclesiarchal bureaucracy she is building can be slow to move and adapt on occasion, as changes and edicts are scribed and bounced between pontifs, lower adjudicators, inquisitorial offices, the diffuse priest of the villages, justicars at war camp...

Other Aspects:
Deliberate but Uncompromising: Annabelle has a particular way of speaking. That is to say, whilst not necessarily terse, she has an even, weighty way of conducting herself. Taken her position as a judge, this has helped her come across as someone who takes all positions into account, does not rush to decisions, and can be trusted to rule fairly. However, even though she is an adept judge and administrator, Annabelle does not easily budge when having come to a conclusion. Indeed, her more colorful invectives and damning accusations tend to come to play when dealing those who try to wriggle their way free from their just fates. Convicted criminals, monsters and unrepentant heretics can expect little sympathy from her, and she pursues them with zeal.

An Eye for Detail: You do not make it far as an Adjudicator without having a mind that is merely fast, keen and strong. You need to have an exceptional eye for detail as well, and indeed, Annabelle is quick to notice nearly any inconsistency, clue or opportunity. Be it an argument, a civic issue, recruitment of officials, or even battle strategy, she has proven to be able to home on the things that matter.

Iron Grip: Lady Tjarn is loathe to leave things to chance, and everything in as tight a leash as possible. Her bookkeeping is impeccable, and everything in her demesne is kept tabs on. The Justicars, the Inquisitors, and a variety of other sects and agencies, are an extremely characteristic quality of the High Arbitrator's demesne, for she favors a strict, centralized and regimented way of ruling, with officials under charter holding extreme authority.

Stunts:
Justicar Corps: Because I have Justicar Corps, I may substitute Ladyship for Warfare when commanding an army.
The Cream of the Crop: Because only The Cream of the Crop are worthy of serving the High Adjudicator, I may substitute Ladyship for Honor to determine the loyalty of my followers.

Nadiya the Torch of Righteousness, War Practical Sorceress

Weaned on stories of the great heroes of yesteryear, Nadiya swore that she would become one herself and drive the monsters back into darkness. Her youth was a manic search for stories of heroes and their exploits, for mentors and scholars who passed down the secrets known to the heroes, and of course rigorous training, especially in the occult arts.

Nadiya was as surprised as anyone else when The One King granted her ladyship, since she had only ever aspired to knighthood. She never questioned the King's sublime wisdom regarding herself (nor any of her new peers for that matter) but she still felt distressingly unprepared for her duty.

Courtly Manners: 1
Faith: 2
Honor: 1
Ladyship: 0
Magic: 3
Warfare: 2

High Concept: Sorceress of the New Order
One of the greatest magicians remaining in the kingdom, commanding respect among her peers, but untold knowledge was lost with the Old Orders during the Great Calamity. Important knowledge, such as how to minimize the dangers associated with sorcery.

Trouble: Leave It to the Little People
Nadiya maintains (and desires) relatively little control over her own court, believing that her Faith, martial accomplishments, and occasional magical favor speak for themselves. This lack of direction (and the occasional capricious discipline) tends to hurt morale and breed subversion among her courtiers.

Other Aspects: Unity In Strength
Nadiya finds it easy to recruit allies and sycophants as long as she keeps delivering victories, even Pyrrhic victories. However, these can be fickle friends.

Fair Face, Coarse Tongue
Nadiya's supernatural beauty and health (equal parts divine providence, magic, and Healthy Living) belie her martial prowess, but opening her mouth reveals her to have the foul temper of a soldier.

Stunt1: War Talisman
On the heels of a victory in the previous season, Nadiya can strike fear into the hearts of her foes, granting a +2 bonus during the first turn of the Combat Phase, when she Attacks using Warfare.

Stunt2: Enchantress
Because of her exceptional magical skill, once per season Nadiya can grant a petitioner some kind of magical device or charm that solves their problem outright, provided she spends considerable time preparing it (left at lest one Build unspent during previous Build Phase). [-1 Refresh]

e: why yes this is absolutely a "don't lose momentum" build thanks for noticing :V

A contract signed by a minor is not binding!

Sanci Baroda, the Diamond General

WIP - I don't have much (any) FAE experience so feel free to offer advice

The Baroda clan of ten years ago were miners, masons, and smiths with vast wealth but no title of nobility. Snubbed as new money or up-jumped commoners and eyed with greed and envy by their noble overlords. Had the Great Calamity not taken place they would no doubt have been another victim of courtly intrigue, left in the dust of history. Being fortunate or long-sighted enough to have evacuated much of their wealth and many skilled workers to the Castle Impervious has put them in a strong position now the tide flows back, with their clan leader a young and dynamic warrior raised up to nobility by the One True King for their services (and in part payment for a number of outstanding loans).

quote:

Aspects
  • Warfare 3
  • Ladyship 2
  • Honor 2
  • Courtly Manners 1
  • Magic 1
  • Faith 0

High Concept:
As the Finest Military Mind of the Age! Lady Baroda commands her legions with incredible efficiency and effectiveness against the enemies of the One True King, making rapid (perhaps reckless) expansion of the realms borders a possibility.

Trouble:
Not One Step Back! is her personal motto, and she carries this philosophy to court and the battlefield. Aggressive and unyielding in her pursuit of victory to the point of inflexibility.

Other Aspects:

The fabled Wealth of the Baroda Mines! pays for her troops, castles, and makes a powerful bargaining tool. Naturally, it also draws envious attention from her peers and the depredations of brigands. And of course, the mines themselves are still deep in enemy territory...

With An Eye For Innovation! Sanci is able to make and fund effective reforms in military, magical and civilian technologies. Of course, any new-fangled device could have hidden costs or side effects.

A Glittering Icon! to her troops and the common people, Sanci is always immaculately outfitted for war or courtly affairs, and her personal attendants are the best that can be had. This might come across as vanity in the wrong circles.

Stunt:
Sanci's Mules Leave Concrete Footsteps!, allowing free construction actions for roads and fortifications in whatever province her army occupies.

Hello, Creature! Do You Despise Goat Hating Fascists? So Do We! Join Us at Paradise Lost!

Prophet-Sage Adjoran, Living Saint of Holy and Unholy Secrets

Thought by the powerful to be mad, by the wise to be holy and by the foolish to be a charlatan, Prophet-Sage Adjoran, named a living saint, is an undeniably powerful figure. Wracked with prophetic nightmares, it is said that as a child, he predicted the coming of the Calamity, but was dismissed as a mad whore-son, and many times since his bizzare and unprecedented elevation from whoreson to living saint, he has given true divine providence, and known secrets though - or hoped - lost. Many a noble princeling fears that he will one day reveal their dalliance to the whole court, and some have event tried to silence him, by gold or other means, but none have succeeded. While generally known for his divine insight and prophetic visions, he has also given divine judgement and horrific curses to those who have in some horrendous way broken with the rules of God. It is also rumored that he knows the name of every angel and every demon, and have been granted occult dominion over such creatures, but such rumors are surely nonsense, are they not? And yet, among his many insights lie strange and powerfull occult wonders, and he has been known to advice even senior mages with new and starteling designs and insights, and there is a single known incident of him bringing a monster to heel by knowledge of its names and strange spells, so perhaps the rumors have some truth to them, not to mention that Adjoran seems to invoke miracles with ease that many priests would find impossible.

As Prophet-Sage and Living Saint, Adjoran's advice is often sought by those in power and those seeking to be truely pious. Scribes and priests note down his every word and prophesy, and the masses seek his blessings, which he often gives willingly. Many in power, especially within the church and judiciary, have a.... mixed view of him, however. Adjoran is obviously holy; noone can truely deny that. But he is outside of the church hierachy and wields tremendous religous power; only The King and God can truely stand in judgement over him - so what happens if Adjoran turns against the church or the established powers? And what matters the proceedings of court when Adjoran can rightly claim that his judgement is Divine? To many, Adjoran is a disruptive figure, and they fear that he may lead the people away from the church and the King.

Aspects:
Courtly Manners: 1
Faith: 3
Honor: 1
Lordship: 2
Magic: 2
Warfare: 0

High Aspect: Living Saint of Holy and Unholy Secrets
Before anything else, Adjoran is a prophet and a saint, and knows secrets both holy and unholy, mundane, occult, and ecclastic. His visions are not always clear, and often come in riddles even to him, or in symbolism the has to interpret, but now and then, his visions are clear and precise, and often show him hidden secrets.

Trouble: A threat to the established order
Adjoran's prophetic insight and strange position outside of the church is a significant challenge to the established order, and his prophetic visions may challenge existing scriptures and dogmas. As such, despite being a Holy man, Adjoran is often in conflict with the church.

Aspects:
Rightly feared: Few things are as terrifying as an unflinching eye that can invoke the judgement of god. Adjoran has been known to bestow truely miraculous curses, such as turning people to stone, causing all food they eat to turn to ash, or calling down pillars of fire, and as such, he is well and truely feared by most people.

Knower of forgotten names and lore:
Along with his visions and skill, Adjoran knows many lost secrets, though his mind is too overwhelmed to properly process them all. These includes the names and rituals for banishing or controling monsters and demons, lost or undiscovered magical arts, techniques of governance and much more.

Friend to the common folk: Born a whoreson, Adjoran is sympathetic to the common people in a way many Lords are not, and they in turn love him for his attentions, his accesibility, and for the oppotunity to be given divine aid or advice when he walks the streets, as he makes it a habit to do.

Stunts:
Foresight: Because i am a Prophet, once per session, i can declare that i am having a relevant vision or have forseen the current events and made preparations for it.
Divine Command: Because my words are infused with divine power, anytime i invoke a miracle, if it involves a specific condition to take effect or to has a condition which will resolve it, i get +2.

SWORD OF SMATTAS. CAN YOU NOT HEAR A WORLD CRY OUT FOR JUSTICE? WHEN WILL YOU DELIVER IT?
Yam Slacker

Kalatha of the Three Precepts, The Smiling Vizier

Not all wars are won through force of arms, nor all conflicts resolved through fighting. Things can occasionally get fractious within the confines of the Great Castle of the One True King, and the value of a soothing voice to calm the tempers that would otherwise boil over is beyond price. Kalatha of the Three Precepts is renowned as an impeccable diplomat, never flustered or ruffled. A hostess beyond compare, one who always eases the will of even the most adversarial of guests. In these calamitous times, she was a rock, a steady anchor, a fixture in the Great Castle that helped many stay on an even keel.

Exceedingly intelligent, coldly calculating behind a warm and welcoming smile, she is a true master of social manipulation, and her skills at negotiation would be frankly terrifying if they didn't leave you feeling warm, happy and like you'd gotten away with by far the better end of it even as you willingly handed over your valuables. Her word is her bond, and she is always sure to uphold impeccably the letter of her dealings, her reputation as an honest broker thus further secured.

Aspects:
Courtly Manners: 3
Faith: 0
Honor: 2
Ladyship: 2
Magic: 1
Warfare: 1

High Aspect: The Silver Tongue Which Could Beguile The World.
Few could match words and wits with the Smiling Vizier and come out ahead: Her charm and grace are legend, her grace and magnanimity are fable. She can wrap the powerful around her little finger with a phrase, and uplift the hearts of the downtrodden with a word.

Trouble: I am peerless and can fool the world with ease.
She's really good at what she does, and has the arrogance of one who looks around and sees no equal. Whilst she can hide how little she thinks of everyone behind her impeccable veneer of perfect civility, she is prone to being blindsided by those who have mastery of aspects she does not consider vital, and has a tendency to underestimate people outside of her context.

Aspects
"Surely we can resolve this in a peaceable manner...": As a masterful diplomat, she can soothe even the unlikeliest of savage brows, turning a contest of swords into a contest of words. To prevent the battle is to win the battle. Her gilded words are as a balm and ointment even in the face of the fiercest aggravation.

The Perfect Hostess: Her command of decorum and protocol is unrivalled: if the guest-right is invoked, she, and those in her care, will not be found wanting. Acts of impoliteness and impropriety are that much harder to undertake in the face of all that she offers.

Blind the eye with glamour, fill the back with knives: Not every situation can be resolved in a calm, reasonable and civilised manner. Sometimes subterfuge and misdirection are necessary to secure the advantage, and she can be absolutlely, heartlessly ruthless when such an approach is called for.

Stunts
Diplomatic Solution: During the War Phase, substitute Courtly Manners for Warfare to represent efforts to reach a peaceable solution, or failing that manipulate the enemy through subterfuge and ruses de guerre.

Appearance of Piety: As a supreme diplomat and social engineer, Kalatha puts her best face forward towards all people. Her mastery of etiquette and sharp mind ensures she knows what to say regardless of the social stature of her conversational partner, which helps her keep on the right side of the smallfolk. For the purpose of interactions with the peasantry, substitute Courtly Manners for Faith. One must keep up appearances, and few can pay lip service as well as she.

Vario Alagrigia, the Steel Heron

Even before the Calamity monsters plagued the land. Legend says that centuries ago the Alagrigia family swore vengeance upon the abominations after an attack razed their estate. Vario, as the designed heir, has spent most of his life hunting and killing monsters with steel and magic, but even he was forced to retreat to Castle Impervious when the final assault came. Now, at the head of the family, he is ready to visit tenfold revenge upon the filth who profaned the Kingdom's land.

Aspects:
Courtly Manners: 1
Faith: 0
Honor: 1
Lordship: 2
Magic: 2
Warfare: 3

High Aspect: Slayer of Monsters
Trained since birth in the arts of tracking and killing monsters, Vario has no equal in the land when it comes to fighthing against them, and knows all about their habits and tactics.

Trouble: He who fights monsters
Vario can get single-minded in his crusade, and has very little patience for interlopers and nuisances. While he understands the importance of logistics and infrastructure, he is prone to dismissing them if he has his sights set on a quarry.

Aspects:

Friend to the people
The peasants are often the ones who have most to suffer from monsters, and as such are the ones most fiercely grateful for the deeds of the Alagrigia family.

Strategic mind
Going after monsters without a plan is suicide; Vario applies this wisdom to all aspects of life, and seldom acts without considering many possible factors.

No such thing as an honorable defeat
Monsters don't play fair, and neither does Vario: he has no qualms using underhanded or less than moral methods to achieve victory.

Stunts
Monster-Slaying Hero
Substitute Warfare for Faith when dealing with peasants in lands where I have slain monsters.

Hello, Creature! Do You Despise Goat Hating Fascists? So Do We! Join Us at Paradise Lost!

The colours, iconography, and Fast days of Prophet-Sage Adjoran, Saint of Holy and Unholy secrets
On the 26th day after midsummer, Prophet-Sage Adjoran was named Saint after he, a common whoreson, recieved a vision which saved more than 500 people from a viscious onslaught, though it is generally agreed that he had visions prior to this time. The day of his sainting is also his feast day, and Adjoran has stated that any who foregoes food for a day and brings his meals to the poor and the homeless will be blessed. The cannonicity of this is still debated within the church.
In his iconography, Adjoran is usually depicted in a monk's robe, eyes heavenward, and with the eye of god floating above his head; beggars may often be seen tugging as his robe or cloak with one hand with the symbol of God in the other. His mother, who has, against his will, been mythologized as a 'holy whore,' is sometimes seen in the background. His coloure are brown, reflecting his common origin, and silver, representing the purity of his vision. Eyes are also common in his iconography, and people particularly devoted to him, as well as occultists, will often wear a pendant a golden eye and brown iris, sometimes with a silver pupil or the symbol of god or the king within the pupil; some mages instead have a magical symbol within the pupil, representing his insight into the occult.

"Little by little the old world crumbled, and not once did the king imagine that some of the pieces might fall on him"

Hector of the Convoy

When the monsters came, it were the farmers who were the first to feel it. Farmstead after farmstead was found with families butchered. Among the farmers was Hector, a respected figure among his peers, always willing to lend a hand to his fellows, and good at convincing others to help each other out as well. When the lord of their lands died in a battle against the monstrous hordes, and many people were panicking, it was Hector who took charge. And he told all farmers not to simply flee in a panic, as quickly as possible, but to harvest what they could of the land, and take as many carts with them as possible. Because he knew that as everyone would make for Castle Impervious, there would be a great need of food.

And so he began a long trek through the kingdom. Wherever they came, they told farmers of the tide of monsters to come, and convinced them to gather what food they had save, and join their convoy. Granaries were empties, fields were hurriedly harvested, cattle and livestock was gathered. All together even the sparsely armed farmers were too large a group for bandits to target, and managed to drive off the smaller monsters hounding them. And when they arrived in Castle Impervious, they brought great amount of foods, and the people could survive.

During his stay inside Hector of the Convoy, as he was called, was something of a speaker for the common folk from outside the cities, trying to intercede in quarrels before the courts needed to intervene. He became a person of some influence. Still, everyone, including himself was surprised when he too was chosen to become a Lord.

Aspects
Courtly Manners: 0
Faith: 2
Honor: 3
Lordship: 2
Magic: 1
Warfare: 1

High Aspects: Farmer Lord
Hector never forgets where he's from, and much of what he knows, who he knows and how he acts are still based on that. It means he's well loved among the smallfolk , but has trouble dealing with people used to more refined treatment.

Trouble: Always Do the Right Thing
Hector's parents raised him with those values. Be honest, be charitable, be kind. In politics, that does not always fly.

Aspects:

Faithful man: Hector is deeply religious, and his relation with the clergy is generally good, even if it does mean he is easily influenced by them.

Logistics Prodigy: Whenever something has to get done, Hector is always the one to think about what people will eat, where will they sleep, how will they get moved. A talented discovered during the Convoy and honed over the years.

Untiring: He's a hard worker, and not one to let a work he started on get away from him. Diligent and persistent at his best, stubborn and overwhelming himself at worst.

Stunt

Reclaim What Was Ours: When Hector builds a farm, he automatically gets to add an extra farm.

Common tongue, Golden Heart: When losing his cool would mean doing an unfair, unkind or selfish thing, Hector rolls with Honor instead of Courtly Manners.
