What happens when a jaded emergency room doctor decides he is going to get in to making feature films? You get some of the best action movies in the world. You also get a bunch of random well recieved animated movies, but we're focusing on the former.

The Mad Max film franchise (especially Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior) has influcenced countless other film makers and popular culture, put Mel Gibson on the map, and shown just what can be achieved with practical effects over the course of thirty six years.

Due to Fury Road's popularity, and after a whole bunch of sellings rights back and forth, Avalanche Studios produced a game that's not an official tie-in, but rather more story that takes place in the larger Mad Max universe. I think they did a great job and it FEELS like you're in a post-apocalyptic hellscape, but I'll let you all decide.

With my for this journey will be my friend Kit, who isn't a goon but is a passable Australian.

We see the intro cinematics and get to THE MOST IMPORTANT CHOICE IN THE GAME! Also worth noting that the choice doesn't effect gameplay in any real way, but does effect how cool we feel driving around which is arguably more important.

And for those not in the know, THIS is the "classic" Mad Max look.

Oh, man, this game. It seemed to flow mostly under the radar to every one but this forum at the time- no one else I could see was talking about it- but I bought it for full price and did absolutely everything and don't regret a bit of it... mostly. People in the know about this particular series are going to have fun identifying all of the references to the other films, and I will look forward to discussing the things that happen within the story.

As for the frame... I have a fondness for Death Rattle.

Woo, my brain finally started processing audio and visual input correctly!

So we grab the DEATH RATTLE and go exploring around Chum's area. I also need some feedback from you guys on what exactly you want to see. More camps? Only one of each type? Whatever you like or dislike seeing I can adjust what I do on and off camera.

I'd prefer you including the bigger optional objectives, like the camps and stuff can be fairly unique and interesting to navigate (or at least they were when I played this game), but if the scrap-collection minicamps get boring feel free to cut those. Also Jeet's probably my second-favourite main character of the friendly NPCs that aren't also game mechanics. Also Griffa is the best of the game mechanic NPCs. I love that guy.

I also like the way Chumbucket bitches at you for not focusing on the car. "If the Saint wants to wander off into the desert like a lost lizard, who is Chumbucket to argue..." His characterisation in general is really strong, like the combinations of religious and technical terms starting with the "Angel made flesh" as he calls the car. It's like building this dream car of his is a form of Transubstantiation for him, bringing himself closer the body of something divine and perfect, that will smite the unworthy and protect the innocent. And as you get better upgrades, his reverence for the car isn't all that undeserved.

Bang! You're dead.
This was a pretty solid game considering it was made to follow in the movie's foot steps and they don't exactly have a glowing history of well polished, successful games. A shame it apparently didn't do well enough to warrant further entries but maybe that will change down the line.

For being so straightforward it's pretty fun, the big mistake I made on my first play through was to decide to finish off each area before moving on; not only does it become extremely monotonous but it breaks up the story of the game into a schizophrenic jumble as Max runs back and forth doing random tasks. Pace yourself and go back to things after a main mission or two and it's much more enjoyable.

For the various camps, some of which are seemingly pointless, they will often have gas or water in them as well as being placed near points of interest (as far as interesting things to see go in this barren wasteland go). I really liked the world building and back story the various relics helped you piece together as well. The devs did a really good job building a detailed world considering almost no one talks about what happened and how basic (brown) the colour pallet is. When I first pulled into Jeet's stronghold it honestly made me sad it looked so rundown and pathetic - it is a marked difference between other post-apoc games like Fallout.

And not that it matters much now but I almost always used the Wild Hunt on the Magnum Opus because it resembled Max's classic Ford Falcon GT from the movies. It was that or the Ripper (random DLC that came bundled with the PC version) or the Shovelface if I got bored at looking at the same thing all the time. Funny thing about the cars as well that you sorta hit on in the first episode, if you keep getting in them on the left side eventually Chum will ask you why you keep getting in on the wrong side of the car if you're such a bad rear end, since it's a pretty simple thing you should have figured out by now.

My read on Jeet was that he was a (not plot but personality, broad strokes but spoilering because I'm not sure if it's actually been made clear yet, I remember his profile saying this much) violent psychopath, that knows that he is so and while he uses it to rule by fear, he uses his piercings to divert his more violent tendencies inward, so that he doesn't actually hurt any of his "subjects"/workers.

He's competent at leading in general, recognising that Max is potentially useful but won't waste resources looking after him as he is a relative stranger and hasn't quite earned his trust - sure he scouted his territory, but it's his territory. His logic is "So you found the camps, well done, do you want a sticker or something? I knew where they were, because my guys steer clear of them, what I need is for you to do something about them!"

He is a bad man due to his issues, but he is trying to be a good person in the only way he can think to. Overall I was kind of in his corner from the start, his logic holds up. I like Jeet a lot.

As we meet more people we'll talk about it more I'm sure, but yeah Jeet is one of my favorites. I think this game has the issue like a lot of games do where the developers spent a whole lot of time building and characterizing some of the first people you meet and then some of the later ones are just "OH GOD WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE DEADLINE IS NEXT WEEK?!?"

I noticed that phenomenon during my Ghosthunter LP - the first level was fantastically written with great characters and a satisfying arc, then the levels just got shorter and shorter and the plot kind of dried up towards the end with half the overall plot literally only appearing in one cutscene, never to be mentioned again. Each level was basically shorter than the last, my videos went from the first level being 8 videos, then 4, then 3, then one or two by the end. It was a huge drop off. Shame because I loved that game.

I feel it's a little more complicated with the flow of this game, but we'll see as the game progresses and we can elaborate on things.

Bang! You're dead.
Minefields, arguably the worst part of the game. Something I usually put off as late as I can... you can spot them without the buggy if you know what to look for when driving by, usually there will be a bunch of wrecks and scortch marks on the ground in areas where they're present. But yeah, online guide is the best way to handle so you aren't driving all over hell's half acres looking for them before beginning the super fun task of defusing them.

You can actually repair the buggy, and any other car (including the Magnum Opus) using Max if you had to as well. If you get out of the car and face the front of it you'll get a prompt to perform an instant repair, though it does cost scrap. Useful for when you bang up a scrapulance too much chasing it down. Or lose your patience clearing a minefield and run over a mine.

For anyone picking up Mad Max in the Steam sale, there's something you should know: there's a mod that changes the colour palette so that the game matches Fury Road! (Download link is in the video description).

The original SweetFX mod was made by forums poster, Joe Gillian, but the original link is dead. It really makes the colours pop at night, too:

I'm really enjoying this LP so far, thanks for doing it. I especially like the Australian perspective on the game; I'd love to hear if there are any recognizable landmarks. When I played the game, I assumed it took place in or around Galveston, Texas, based on some street signs and such.

I'd also like to make a few requests:

You already mentioned it, but the war criers are really funny if you leave them alive after all the other fighters are dead.
Eat a lizard.
Please don't off-screen all of the scavenger sites. Yes, a lot of them are boring and dumb, but there's a few that have really interesting environmental storytelling, and even a few fun jump scares.

I'm pretty sure that first request is filled in this video.
I have actually only seen one of the spoilers during my ENTIRE time playing, and it got away before I could get FRAPS going.
And if you've got one in mind I'm happy to show them off. I just tend to not record during that because FRAPS gets cumbersome on file sizes real fast.

I've only just started watching, and... I think I'd have to switch the Australian part of my brain off when playing this, really.

I've never heard "dinky-di" pronounced like "dinkee dee" and I've lived in Australia my whole life. It's always "dinkee die". Not that it's used especially often anymore; not in my lifetime.

Also no-one calls it "gas" here; it's petrol. I have to admit though that "guzzolene" is too fitting a term for the Mad Max universe to give up for the sake of accuracy.

What Yapo said about constantly getting into the car on the wrong side; that's me in basically all games with vehicles since they usually follow the left-hand-drive convention. Maybe I should get this game just so I'm instinctively getting in on the correct side, for once. :australia:

I'm still catching up, but on "you've got balls the size of boojums"; I've never heard that term before. I'm pretty sure it's not an Australian slang term. It seems like there's a few things it could be, but who knows what the writer had in mind. Maybe it was the boojum tree, since it's a desert plant? They're apparently only really found in California though... definitely not Australia.

I'm starting to think the writers of this computer game may not actually know anything about Australia. :ssh:

Whatever though; I went and bought the game the other day, largely on the strength of this LP. Also it was on sale for five dollars, so hey, why not?
