As of about 12 hours ago, the Iraqi army went ahead and moved in to Kurdish territories in Northern Iraq.

BBC News posted:

Clashes have been reported between Iraqi and Kurdish forces after Baghdad sent troops towards disputed areas held by the Kurds in Kirkuk province.

State TV said government forces had taken control of some areas, including oil fields, "without fighting". But Kurdish officials denied this. An exchange of artillery fire is said to have occurred south of Kirkuk city. The US government has said it is very concerned and urged dialogue "as the best option to defuse tensions".

Sounds iffy and weird, and not at all a precursor to more escalating bad poo poo in the notoriously peaceful region of the Middle East. So how'd this happen?

BBC again posted:

Tensions between Iraq's Arab-led central government and the autonomous Kurdistan Region intensified after people living in areas under its control voted overwhelmingly for independence in a referendum last month. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said the referendum was unconstitutional and demanded it be annulled. The Kurdistan Regional Government insisted it was legitimate and called for dialogue. Crisis talks on Sunday failed to resolve the stand-off between the two sides. The Iraqi government said overnight that it had launched the operation in Kirkuk to "secure bases" and "federal installations". Kurdish officials said Iraqi troops had been advancing alongside government-backed Shia militias south of Kirkuk city and intended to take control of oil fields and an airbase.

So basically, the Kurds wanted out and the Iraqi government said no and finally decided to send in the tanks. Though it gets a bit more complicated (of course it loving does).

Surprise! It's the BBC again! posted:

Kirkuk is an oil-rich province claimed by both the Kurds and the central government. It is thought to have a Kurdish majority, but its provincial capital has large Arab and Turkmen populations. Kurdish Peshmerga forces took control of much of the province in 2014, when Islamic State (IS) militants swept across northern Iraq and the army collapsed.

The dark purple is what is considered Iraqi Kurdistan, light purple is poo poo they took when they pushed ISIS out because the Iraqi army completely collapsed several years ago. The Kurds have just never gotten around to giving this incredibly rich part of Iraq back to the central government because they likely aren't complete dumbasses and know good leverage when they occupy it. So what's been happening since this all started?

It's been kinda a clusterfuck, as to be expected. So far it seems Iraq has taken the city of Kirkuk somewhat easily from the Pershmerga, but will now have to occupy it and face potential counterattacks. The US has strategic reasons to support both sides, since we have used the Kurds to do a lot of our heavy lifting in the region for decades...but we came out strongly against their independence referendum since it would massively destabilize the region as Turkey, Syria, and Iran also have large Kurdish populations. Also worth noting, that there's been a lot of reports that Iranian backed militias have been fighting with the Iraqi army. So will this be a one-note little incursion with the Kurds just giving up or lead to a full blown war, who knows as of yet. But its 2017 and boy oh boy do we have such sights to show you.

As well, this link seems to be updated with potentially good information if you want to follow or care about it outside of just shitposting. But the source is very clearly pro-kurdish so good amount of salt and all that.

They have been in the past, but they clearly didn't put up a fight for the most part over Kirkuk. Could just be they got really loving surprised though. We'll see if they counterattack and how successful it is!

Supposedly the Iraqi army has been getting better since their shameful display at Mosul in 2014 (I mean, Jesus, just look at those numbers), and they managed to actually carry out the Mosul operation. That said the Shia militias Iraq has running around are probably about as well armed as the Peshmerga and in general much more highly motivated than the Iraqi army, so if the army still hasn't gotten better it's possible that the militias and pesh might be more evenly matched. Though I can't imagine any side will be able to get much in the way of air support and for both the Peshmerga and the Iraqi forces having air support, especially US air support, has been absolutely vital in their success against ISIS and in general important to how they've operated in recent years.

Apparently, the PUK (a kurdish militia) has been accused by the Pershmerga of treason - they made a deal with the Iraqi government to abandon positions when the army pushed in. Which would explain why the Kurds made a full retreat out of the city instead of trying to maintain some kind of resistance.

E: lmao ^^^^^

Not to be dramatic but that poo poo is full on purge territory, on top of Kurdish cries for independence for God knows how long, an incompetent bitch boy army complete with manlove Thursdays and zero inclination for real conviction or purpose for fighting being their opponents, we might see some serious poo poo go down and the Kurdish element rallying around being betrayed and seizing a real chance for independence.

I don't think even the USA has the stomach for using our forces against the Kurds so even with fancy toys we gave Iraq idk how this one might go down

So Iraq abandoned these cities to IS a few years ago with nary a fight, and now wants to start a civil war over them? I really hope the Kurds come out on top, like is there any question they deserve their own state at this point? Iirc all of their oil exports are handled through the central govt which basically screws them all the time.
