first I cake on the white makeup. I mean really paint that stuff on so I'm ghost-white. the pallor of a corpse. then I accentuate my mouth so it is broad, leering, a shocking and violent crimson. have my lips merely grown to a grotesque size, or are they actually bloody (and if so, whose blood is it?) that is for the viewer to decide. my nose is made bulbous. it is no longer a nose, an organ for smelling; it is a protruberance of unnatural symmetry which could read as a doorknob for my face, a giant swollen pimple, or a fruit that might be delicious, poisonous, or creepily sexual my eyes are distorted by abstract patterns and contrasting colors. this makes it difficult to tell where I am looking and what I might be feeling. the unnatural angularity of the design evokes the gaze of an alien consciousness, like the cold unblinking eye of a squid or cuttlefish, or the predatory stare of a crocodile judging the right moment to strike and overwhelm its prey not even my hair is left to its natural appearance. the sprouting tufts of green and orange look so very much like cotton candy, but a kind of cotton candy you wouldn't want to eat. when my transformation is complete, I will go out into the world and tell the crying children "this is a friendly face. don't you see? I am your friend. play with me." |
