So I just checked Amazon (the UK store) and the price for a stick of 8GB DDR4 (HyperX Fury or Corsair Vengeanace) were ranging about £80-£100, and a 4GB stick was between £40-£50. Which is ridiculous, because months ago, and a year back, they were about £60-£70 (for 8GB) and £15-£30 (for 4GB).

Then on closer inspection, I checked the different versions of RAM speed and there's only 2 types available, 2400MHz and 2666MHz.

Why the hell aren't HyperX and Corsair restocking more RAM, how are they more expensive all of a sudden?

Corsair and Hyper X are forced to pay more by the manufacturers. Basically all of the consumer facing brands are just repackaging more generic modules. Other manufacturers are buying up all of the stock so they're forced to pay more. I thought I was being smart only getting 16GB of DDR4 in 2015 because those were early adopter prices. I paid half what prices are now. Phones, consoles, and videocards are taking up all of the capacity, manufacturers need to decide how they're going to dedicate their manufacturing capacity and consumer DDR4 is a lower priority also because people have proved that they will pay more and computer building hasn't stopped so they'll keep at it at these lower priority levels until external demand falls and they switch over manufacturing or they'll make a new factory and all of a sudden demand will drop and then they're in the opposite problem of way too much manufacturing compared to the demand. That's why it's not as simple as building more factories, they don't want to get into a bad situation for themselves.

In addition to all that, RAM manufacturers have been found guilty of collusive price-fixing on multiple past occasions and it wouldn't shock me if the same thing was happening again. Beyond the active, highly illegal sort, there's also the passive sort where you just don't bother to increase manufacturing capacity as long as your competitors aren't either. Semiconductor fabs take a long time to bring online, so any of them will have ample notice if the others are increasing capacity before it actually affects pricing directly.

I ended up paying 130 for 16 gigs of DDR3. I was hoping to get a deal this week, but I actually ended up paying 20 bucks more than if I had pulled the trigger on a sale newegg had some months ago.

I have 8gb of DDR3 that i bought in 2012, thinking 'oh i'll buy more when games start to need it' and i want to fuckin' die. More than doubled in price in the last two years or so. I'm almost tempted to sell it for the profit and buy more of a worse speed. Between this and the cryptocurrency poo poo affecting video cards it's an atrocious time to get a new high end computer.

Probably collusion which they have done many times in the past. Then they get slapped with a $100-200M fine which is less than the tens of billions they made from doing it, and do it again later.

By they I mean Samsung, Hynix etc, not Corsair or whatever.

Modern society is incredibly forgiving of financial crime perpetuated by megacorps and top 1%ers to the point even the have-nots thinks there's nothing wrong with it.

It's because those companies/people are wealth/job creators, and they wouldn't want to put laws in place that limit how successful somebody is allowed to be, as they will undoubtedly be in that position themselves in a few years.

I get that GPU prices are going through the roof thanks to cryptocurrency mining making a buzz, but why are RAM chips falling into that same category.

Now it costs about 30 - 50 bucks for just basic ram, and it you want more for gaming or production, you have to spend nearly 200 bucks or MORE or 32 gigs. I get that's how capitalism works but this poo poo is going too far.

While these posts are funny, if you think they're insightful then you need to tell me what socialist revolution lowered RAM prices in the first place.

Isn't it a mix of a couple of factors? Some price collusion, a lot of phones using DDR memory, limited supply?
Just glad I found 16gb / 2400 for $75 on CraigsList.

It's important to remember that a socialist revolution is the only alternative. None exist in between the two options, such a shame.

I agree, companies getting dinged for price fixing might as well require a socialist revolution in this timeline.
