Real talk, last month was the first time I actually watched the original star trek series and it had some drat good episodes, some may be outdated pretty much but the others still hold up (my favourite being COTEOF because of harlan freaking ellison). Not only was the show good but it got its message clear, just a diverse crew working together and spreading peace across the galaxy. Then I looked back at star trek discovery, and realised how much of a hot mess it is...and this is supposed to take place YEARS BEFORE TOS. The only way they could save this absolute trash is if the writers pretend it all took place in the kelvin universe with abrams' trek (even then that would be stretching it), like how the last episode of enterprise just had riker and troi play the finale in a holodeck simulation because they knew it was awful.

Star Trek has never been sexy, and at best it has approached the concept of hip/cool. This is really really hard for entertainment people to wrap their head around.

I said that Star Trek isn't sexy, not that there haven't been sexy things in it.

I havent seen it yet, but I'm torn. I enjoyed TOS a lot, and I feel like Star Trek's optimism for humanity is something desperately needed in this day and age. Tossing out Roddenberry's rule about not having crewmembers fight with each other, or trying to make Star Trek dark and gritty makes me worried that it's going to be a depressing series that is Star Trek in name only.

insulated staircase posted:the main character is girl spock but 3x more powerful and clever This bothers me. Like, it's as if they saw the inspiration for the "Mary Sue" trope and thought it was a good idea to build from it. She's Spock's adopted sister, who grew up with him on Vulcan, and she has the personality of a Vulcan. She can do nearly anything a Vulcan can, but she's a Human. Star Trek: The Lost Years was going to have Xon, the Vulcan who wanted to be Human, but even they didn't decide to have him be Jim Kirk's adopted brother, who palled around with Jim in Iowa. I know Star Trek has been making GBS threads on Vulcans as of late (from DS9 until when they had Nero destroy the planet), but is it so unbelievable that another Vulcan might adopt a Human child???
