Yeah I was always curious what so many people use VPNs for since I don't have one myself. My best understanding is that they are for...

1) Doing illegal poo poo.

2) Circumventing regions locks on entertainment media.

3) Cheating online merchants by paying an out of region price (usually on digital goods like video games).

4) Preventing your porn fetishes from being traced back to you.

Someone tell me if there are more legitimate uses for VPNs. I don't really care about any media I don't already have access to, I'm not interesting in trying to cheat Steam, and I don't care who knows that I like looking at anime boobs.

Uh vpns were not invented for any of this. It was to securely connect to corporate/govt servers. Like a long time ago. We ran device to device vpns like 15 or 20 years ago between remote sites and data centers. poo poo moved from hardware, to software, to open source, and this is what people think they were for now.
