Nature Abhors A Vacuum

Adding the 4ths in because FIFA kept 17 referees for 16 on field slots. That doesn't mean there can't be repeats, of course, but it's not extremely likely from the whistles anyway. Might tip us off a bit about who is going to get the final (It's going to be Cakir)

Uruguay - France

Ref: Nestor Pitana (ARG)
4th: Alireza Faghani (IRN)
VAR: Massimiliano Irrati (ITA)

Pitana was given the honor of the opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia and did two more games after that, a group stage match between Mexico and Sweden and the round of 16 match between Croatia and Denmark. It's a little strange to work again after the R16, but FIFA likely see that there isn't much room for CONMEBOL referees going forward and decided to use them now. Pitana has had an excellent tournament and, in truth, may have deserved a game deeper than this one, but the tournament just didn't work out for him.

Brazil - Belgium

Ref: Milorad Mazic (SRB)
4th: Jair Marrufo (USA)
VAR: Daniele Orsato (ITA)

Mazic worked South Korea - Mexico and Senegal - Colombia in the group stages. There was a goal scored off an advantage he gave in the former and he gave a penalty that VAR asked him to look at and he reversed in the latter. He did fine, overall, there wasn't really a whole lot to talk about. This will be a big test for Mazic, probably more difficult than that Champions League final he just did.

If anyone is curious, the refs retained were

Alireza Faghani (IRN), Cuneyt Cakir (TUR), Matthew Conger (NZL), Andres Cunha (URU), Malang Diedhiou (SEN), Mark Geiger (USA), Bjorn Kuipers (NED), Jair Marrufo (USA), Antonio Mateu Lahoz (ESP), Milorad Mazic (SRB), Nestor Pitana (ARG), Cesar Ramos (MEX), Sandro Ricci (BRA), Gianluca Rocchi (ITA), Janny Sikazwe (ZAM), Nawaf Shukralla (BHR), Damir Skomina (SVN)

Underlined the 4ths since they may work again, struck through the refs because I'd be shocked if they reappeared.

Today's winner will win the entire thing, is what I'm saying right now at this very moment.

So, by this logic, Belgium will win the Cup.

Uruguay start off with a jaunty number against the French passion, somewhat belying their steadfast defence. Chewy Louis stands looking prepared, and as soon as the lyrics start his overbite flows into action. There's a strong performance from the team, somewhat standard against the passion of the melodic anthem, but their singing gaining in strength as it goes on. Expect some solid play. The French anthem sounds tinny over the speakers, and the players look nervous despite what is a walloping anthem. The crowd can't seem to get into either. I think Uruguay have this one and the only element that can lead to their downfall will be bad hair.
