Also because I want to briefly mention AR2 and AVAR2. But lets deal with Cunha first. Cunha worked France Australia and Iran Spain. In the former, we had the first appearance of VAR at the tournament. In the latter, he was the first referee of the tournament to receive a second assignment. It also had that flip throw attempt. Cunha did fine in those matches, but there wasn't a lot to do. I'm shocked he got another match. I really expected Mateu Lahoz to get one of the semi-finals (been a long time since a Spanish ref didn't work a knockout game), but instead he got sent home. Based on his first two games, he will probably do fine, but he was never really tested this World Cup so it will be interesting to see how it goes as the temperature of the game rises. If one of the two semi-finals is going to go sideways due to a ref screw up, it'll be this one. So, AR2. Mauricio Espinosa. Apparently, Cunha's crew was originally assigned to tomorrow's England game. They had to change them over to this one because Espinosa was the one who didn't see Lampard's shot go across the line in 2010. Probably smart to avoid some controversy there. AVAR2. Roberto Diaz Perez. In 60 matches, he has been AVAR2 like... 3? 4 times? But they kept him around to work a semi-final after sending the referee he was paired with, Mateu Lahoz, home. Seems like a big middle finger to Mateu Lahoz. Wonder what he did to piss Busacca off.
