not that it doesn't suck, but alicization was written like a decade ago and the author has since apologized for how depicted sexual assault. so idk if speaking of "the author" like he's still pulling this kind of thing in the present tense makes sense

That can be fair but I find it funny that the guy just could not help inserting not just sexual assault but his specific cuckold scenario sexual assault over and over again. For every scene there is a guy being made to watch.

They also could have all easily been excised in the story in adaptation while losing basically nothing, though that is more on the adapters. Minus the sexual assault the scenes would just be very obvious retreads of that one time Kirito got poisoned by the pker in season 1.

Oh sure, it's awful. I just don't see this as the author inflicting these scenes on us in an ongoing sense, since this is an adaptation of a fairly old WN.

also like that scene in the LN while it's not good it's still nowhere near as bad as they did it in the anime, this is a weird adapation thing, i wanna say the person who storyboarded it also did the other problem episode from the first half of alicization

God these villains are so strawman evil. I've seen more morally gray villains in... basically every piece of media I've ever consumed? I got halfway through typing that sentence and realized I couldn't think of a more comically evil villain. The Joker maybe?

"If this is a Japanese server, and you're legitimate users, why do you have good gear?" Isn't that like... exactly the reason they'd have good gear, PoH? Also maybe you shouldn't make "they have good gear, they're bad guys" your argument when you're wearing your custom evil clothes and throwing your butcher cleaver that flies like Mjolnir around, buddy.

Also gently caress yes, it makes like no sense but I am all in on guns being in play now.

Ha, I mean that's fair, but my problem is they lack any sort of depth at all... okay, maybe depth's not what I mean, but like, a motivation.

Like, they name dropped Sugou this episode which made me think of every other SAO villain, and while almost every one of them were also hilariously evil (except arguably Kayaba) but they had some sort of reason they were doing awful things. Kayaba had his dumb dream, Sugou wanted to perfect his mind manipulation project to sell to the Americans and to mold Asuna into his waifu, and Death Gun (well the multiple Death Guns) wanted to incite terror plus that one creep wanted to have sex with Sinon. So far this season, Gabe & PoH's motivation is "get paid" (which is boring), and their personalities are "we're loving psychos (and one of us wants to Pac-Man some souls)"

Whatever though, there's still time on the clock for them to be remotely interesting characters. Or maybe their ridiculously evil levels will start being funny to me, who knows.

Yeah, I'm sure some people would complain about the anime not being "completely accurate" but given that Kawahara himself has expressed his regret over writing this stuff in the past, there's no need for the anime to depict the tentacle stuff, or at least not be as explicit. Having Leafa get captured may be necessary story wise but there's no need to show tentacles snaking between her boobs or up her dress besides some people at A1 being clearly into it.

How does the one paper-thin bad guy have soul sucking ability when the irreplaceable account that had those powers is gone and he's converting his account from a loving Ghost Recon Wildlands game? Whatever, whatever, I know it's a dumb question about a trash show.

But follow on, since we've established in this episode that all these Chinese and Korean randos are open to the idea that they're being conned why do they all just stand around while the other paper-thin bad guy loudly pontificates about his role in a presumably infamous group of serial killers from the Aincrad incident?

Pretty sure the soul munching wasn't an emperor account power, it's just a thing he (and presumably anybody) can do, he's just the only one who does it because he's a creep. Although the soul thing might also help because he's logged in from the soul translator thing instead of just any old headset.

I haven't read it myself, so I can't really verify, but on Reddit people are saying the anime simply dropped all the details about different language barriers that made it sensible in the LN. Supposedly the foreigners don't understand the Japanese used in that scene. And I guess megalomaniacal laughter needs a translation to be grasped as evil.

Yeah, I was all ??? too, but helpful people informed me they're from some anime original movie, apparently, and this is again anime original content that's hard to describe as anything but filler. Unless... you watch the movies like a true fan, I guess. I tend to skip them, since I hate recap garbage.

This season has been incredibly "anything goes", with people pulling wonderful new skills out of their rear end at will.

Yeah, They are from Ordinal Scale.

That guy's an SAO who was in Asuna's guild that Kayaba lead.

He was/is the number 2 player in the titular Augmented Reality game Ordinal Scale .

The Singing idol that everyone knew is the Idol Yuna from the game. Who is actually a reincarnated AI version of Eiji's friend(GF?) that her dad used Eiji and the other SAO survivor's memories to recreate.

Ordinal Scale came out after the author had already written Alicization. But was set between Phantom Bullet, and Alicization.

The author added some more stuff from OS in the books after Alicization and Ordinal Scale came out, so it's technically canon, but yeah this is just the animators adding it probably because the movie did well, if I had to guess.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGaguBURqk0

Also yeah, dude's power doesn't really make any sense. Outside the fact that the general concept of Alicization and the underworld is that your power is defined by your self image and like resolution.

This entire scenario in the books was just that these players were following this dude because of the story they've been told before logging on/the fact they think it is just a game, and because there were only a few people who logged on who understood japanese, so they had absolutely no clue what anyone was saying, until someone who could actually translate stepped in, and calmed everyone down.

I guess the Anime is making it so dude's like resolution is able to affect and influence those who themselves don't have character designs strong wills. Yeah it's all nonsense.

They're from the (original material) movie so yeah it's pretty wild. Especially because Eiji was one of the villains of the movie and it ended with Yuna the fairy girl dying/discorporating. So it's like... I can't quite think of an equivalent scenario but let's just say it's like if some villain from one of the tons of One Piece movies suddenly popped up in the show proper with zero introduction and was like "We're on the same side now guys!"... and then he died.

I do like that basically everyone's like "Oh poo poo (the equivalent of)Hatsune Miku's here, I guess this server really is Japanese!"

I was (and still am I guess) loving the new skills out of the rear end but I'm kind of tired of the mind control. Again, I get that willpower=real power in this game/universe but like, come the gently caress on, manifesting your Stand ghost to make people evil is some grade-A horseshit. But then, like, he makes them start killing each other, even though he only has a hate-on for the Japanese? I guess he's just a psychopath, but this episode really lays out that he hates the Japanese, so his response is... making the American, Chinese, and Korean players get into a slaughterfest among themselves?

(Also the movie is totally unironically good and I would recommend it even if you're a casual fan)

The only one we've seen is it just shoots a Getsuga Tensho black beam, we don't know if it has a second gimmick (it probably does since a lot of (but not all) swords have demonstrated some extra thing and also he's Kirito). It's also supposed to have some thing where it absorbs energy but I think the only time that's been even slightly demonstrated was when he and Fanatio battled and he won their beam clash
