16+4d6 Feral Hogs

Ferocious, dangerous, and hungry for human flesh. 600 lbs of armoured bulk charging from 216 yards (108 hexes) away.

Shooting Tables:

Phase 1
Closest Hog: 108 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 40

John Razorback hears the scraping of trotters against underbrush and the sound of something large moving at high speed. In the treeline he sees them: feral hogs! Thirty to fifty of them! He disengages the safety of his trusty AR-15 (1 action), drops prone (2 actions), and adopts a firing stance (1 action). He lines up the front sight on the leading hog (1 action), and attempts to adjust his sights for greater accuracy. The hogs, in line formation over two hogs deep, charge towards John.

Phase 2
Closest Hog: 99 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 40

John keeps his rifle as steady as he can against a moving target and pulls the trigger, feeling only recoil (1 action). At the beginning of phase 2 the first line of hogs has already moved 24 yards.
code:
SAL: 7
Range: +0
Prone: +6
Hog Size: +7
Moving Target: -5
Aim: -9
Total: 6
Probability of Hit: 05%
John Razorback rolls a 22 and misses. He lines up two more shots (4 actions), getting a +1 bonus to Aim Time for follow-up shots. Rolling 14 and then 85, he misses both times. He continues the aim at the deceptively fast hog (1 action).

Phase 3
Closest Hog: 90 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 40

Another shot, 49, another miss. As the first line of hogs draw closer, they're easier to aim at, increasing John Razorback's chances to 40% - and after aiming all he can (2 actions) he rolls a 19, hitting a feral hog! A roll of 97 for hit location results in a Left Hindleg Bone hit:

The hog's ferocious bulk reduces the PEN of 10 to 7, which is further reduced by the hog's thick, armoured hide with a Protection Factor of 0.2, and an Effective Protection Factor of 0.3 from glancing. Effective Penetration is 6.7 and the hog's mass reduces the Damage Class from 5 to 4. The bullet lodges in the hog's lower hindleg, disabling the leg and causing 27 damage. The hog wobbles, fails its KO roll by 1, and swerves drunkenly around. One hog down, but you never know with these feral hogs - sometimes they just play wounded to trick you into getting closer!

Using his last three actions of the phase, John takes aim and fires at a second hog (3 actions), but misses with a roll of 67.

Phase 4
Closest Hog: 81 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 39

Taking aim again (2 actions) John yanks the trigger, feeling the AR-15 kick against his shoulder and watches as a roll of 91 sends a shot high above the group of feral hogs. It takes another two shots - 85, 37 - to down a hog. The bullet strikes the feral hog's bared underside and lodges in the liver for 8000 damage. It drops like a 600 lbs sack of potatoes. John Razorback steadies his aim on another hog (2 actions).

Phase 5
Closest Hog: 72 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 38

John fires (1 action), the hogs so close the chance to hit is 47%. A roll of 43 and another hit to the Liver. 8000 damage explodes through the hog and its forward momentum sends its carcass tumbling onwards. "Tell them to make bacon in hell!" John Razorback says coldly. Three actions later, John fires his rifle again, narrowly missing with a roll of 48. A second shot two actions later rolls 42 and lands a hit on the hog's upper hindleg bone. At such close ranges the penetration and damage class is higher, and 700 points of physical damage stuns a feral hog.

Phase 6
Closest Hog: 63 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 36

The hogs are close now - close enough to smell. At three actions of aim he would have a 54% hit chance, but John "The Baconator" Razorback, veteran of many defensive actions against feral hogs, knows you need to maintain a high rate of fire. After only two actions of aim, he fires at 40% and rolls 100, sending the bullet into the lower stratosphere. A one-action follow-up shot hits 17 and true, leaving a hog with a grisly wound to its neck. But will a feral hog me stopped by a mere 29 points of neck wound? Of course not: it continues its rampage and it takes three more shots (87, 95, 25) to hit the ferocious beast. A five-five-six milimeter, full metal jacket bullet lances out the muzzle of John's black gun and slices the hog's gut open, leaving it to trail its intestines along the ground as it slides to halt, knocked unconscious by 2000 points of physical damage.

Phase 7
Closest Hog: 54 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 35

Two actions of aim at the closing hogs gives John Razorback a 47% chance to hit, and he takes it, his roll of 48 sending a bullet to make waves in the hog fur. A one-action follow-up shot of 13 hits another hog in the neck, but it, too, is too feral to care. It cares only for one thing: human flesh. A quick, one-action follow-up shot rolls 13 again, and 200 points of damage to the fleshy part of an upper hindleg seems to stagger the hog - but it continues onwards, its hingleg dragging behind it as it crawls towards John's position. It takes a follow-up shot (24) to the pelvis and intestines to send this hog to hog hell. John takes aim (1 action) at another hog, the fact he has only nine rounds left in the magazine weighing heavily on him.

Phase 8
Closest Hog: 45 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 34

Less than a hundred yards away, the hogs can be hit with a 61% certainty, but a roll of 86 isn't enough. John pulls the trigger as fast as he can, taking three shots and three actions (91, 84, 50) to shatter another hog pelvis for 3000 damage. With only two actions left, he uses them both to fire off at the last hog left of the first rank. His nerves of steel do not betray him, but an errant gust of wind does, and a 99 fails to hit a hog.

Phase 9
Closest Hog: 36 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 33

Aiming at the leading hog, closer but also weaving side to side and hard to hit, John feels that this simply isn't getting any easier. 77, 81, 52, finally, a hit! The NATO round takes a good chunk of flesh off the feral hog's upper foreleg, but it continues forward as if the wound isn't there. Steadying himself, John Razorback lines up the rear aperture with the front post and squeezes the trigger carefully - 75, and blood and gore errupts from a gaping exit wound in the hog's rear. 3000 damage and the hog keels over. The first line of the hog wave has been defeated, and John "The Baconator" Razorback has one bullet left in his magazine...

He takes two actions to aim at the centre hog and fires, at an 80% chance to hit. 52, and a hit to the pelvis and intestines sends another little piggy to the slaughterhouse.

Phase 10
Closest Hog: 28 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 31

John presses the magazine release and pulls the empty magazine free, dropping it where it lies. He pulls a magazine from his chest rig and starts to rock it into the magazine well. Meanwhile, the deafening roar of trotters comes closer...

Phase 11
Closest Hog: 19 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 31

John slaps the magazine in and pushes the forward assist like his life depended on it, which was always, when you're John "The Baconator" Razorback. The feral hogs were close now. He could see the amber of their eyes. You could kill a dozen hogs, but there were always more, always willing to give their lives to kill Americans.

Phase 12
Closest Hog: 10 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 31

So close he can taste them in the air, the feral hogs are easy to hit. Aim Time 2 gives John a 97% chance to hit, and he uses it. Two actions, and a glancing hit leaves a hog with a cut along its torso. Another action - another shot - and it's suffocating as its lungs fill up with blood. With his last three actions, John Razorback stands up...

Phase 13
Closest Hog: 1 hex
Hogs Remaining: 30

...and draws his bayonet (2 actions). The first hog is upon him, slamming into him like a freight train, knocking him down and causing 2 physical damage, which, being John "The Baconator" Razorback, he ignores.

Phase 14
Closest Hog: EXTREME HOG PROXIMITY
Hogs Remaining: 30

Recovering from the blow and staring into the snout of a feral hog, John blocks a bite with his rifle (1 action) and parries another with his knife (1 action) as the hogs surround him and bite. He feels vicious, inhuman teeth bit at his ribs (2x 8.6 damage), his thigh (31.2 damage) and finally a vast maw closes around his head (200 damage). His head still stuck in the jaws of death, he braces himself (1 action), and sinks his bayonet into the skull of the beast on top of him (1 action) for 400 damage. A horrible squeal erupts as blood flows in a thick river from a gaping hole in the hog's forehead. Another stab into a pig's lung seems to not even scratch it, as John "The Baconator" Razorback drifts in and out of consciousness...

This is the life. I'm just lying here in my hammock in Townsville, sipping a G&T.
Interesting analysis, but obviously flawed since The Baconator cannot come close to saving his children. I think we're using the wrong rifle here, a standard AR-15 instead of the heavily customised weapon of the American Patriot. Try one chambered in, say, 6.8 SPC to improve hog-stopping power and bubba'd out with the most expensive scope you can find.

Bonus Round - 30-50 feral hogs vs. FN Minimi

Setup
Unless otherwise noted, the Minimi will be set up with the bipod deployed (+3) and braced (+1) by a prone (+6) shooter. The 30-50 feral hogs are roughly human-sized (Single Shot: +7, Automatic Elevation: +11) and are assumed to be moving at 2 Hexes Per Impulse for simplicity. This corresponds to a -5 to-hit penalty at 41-200 hexes, -6 at 21-40 hexes, -8 at 11 to 20 hexes and -10 at up to 10 hexes.

Phase 1
Closest Hog: 108 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 45
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 2%, 8%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 8%, 20%, 44%

John "The Baconator" Razorback finds himself in an eerily similar situation as he hears the scraping of trotters against underbrush and the sound of something large moving at high speed. Feral hogs in the bushes! 30-50 of them! He drops prone (2 actions), puts his Minimi in a firing position (1 action), braces the bipod against the soil (1 action), flicks the safety from 'Safe' to 'Auto' (1 action).

Phase 2
Closest Hog: 99 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 45
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 2%, 8%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 8%, 20%, 44%

John Razorback takes a lengthy aim and fires off a burst (3 actions), a 62 not enough to hit. He ceases fire, lines up the sights on a hog, and tries anew (3 actions). His strong arms keeps the muzzle from climbing and a burst spreads out into the wall of hogs. Two jacketed metal bullets leave nasty cuts across a hog, cutting its back and gut open. Taking 918 damage, the hog slumps forward. One down, forty-four to go.

Phase 3
Closest Hog: 90 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 44
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 2%, 8%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 8%, 20%, 44%

Rapid, disciplined fire. One burst every second. That's the only way to deal with feral hogs. Unfortunately, both 75 and 48 climb the muzzle too high, and two short bursts slam into the treeline behind the hogs.

Phase 4
Closest Hog: 81 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 44
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 3%, 10%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 9%, 22%, 48%

John Razorback is as cold as ice and continues to drive a stream of bullets into the hog masses. 52, and then a 24. One round hits, amputating a tail (18 damage) the rest fall between the open ranks of feral hogs.

Phase 5
Closest Hog: 72 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 44
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 3%, 13%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 10%, 25%, 53%

Brrt! Brrt! The Minimi rattles in John Razorback's hands as he continues to slam round after round into the ranks of feral hogs, to no avail.

Phase 6
Closest Hog: 63 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 44
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 4%, 16%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 11%, 28%, 58%

John rolls 74 - and 17. A hog takes it in the upper hindleg, shattering the bones, while a second bullet sends destructive shockwaves through its liver. It slumps against the ground, knocked out by 10700 physical damage. "This little piggy went to hell," John says coldly as he prepares to line up on another hog. Three more bullets strike into the ranks behind. Shots to the neck and shallow cuts to the back of the shoulders do little, but another hit to the liver kills another hog on the spot from 10060 damage.

Phase 7
Closest Hog: 54 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 42
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 5%, 19%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 12%, 32%, 63%

Two more disciplined burst of Aim Time 3 slam into the hog lines. 68 and 47, hitting a hog twice. The feral monstrosity continues forward, ignoring the gushing wound to its neck, but finds itself unable to move with a shattered femur.

Phase 8
Closest Hog: 45 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 41
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 6%, 23%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 14%, 35%, 69%

It's Omaha beach. Wounded Knee. Rorke's Drift. The killing fields. The first day on the Somme. World War III in the bush. Only now, pouring automatic fire into a hog wall, does John Razorback feel at peace. 59, 84, a wide burst clips one hog for 31 damage, hits another in the foreleg for the same amount, and slams three times into the third line of hogs, hitting muscle and spilling the pigs liver and intestines all over the ground.

Phase 9
Closest Hog: 36 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 40
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: N/A, 7%, 28%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 16%, 39%, 74%

Two more bursts at the correct elevation (30, 64), jacketed bullets dense among the loosely ranked hogs. A hog in the first rank buys it as its stomach ruptures (2000 damage), another takes a bone-shattering hit to the upper foreleg (100 damage) but continues limping forward as if nothing. Over half the second burst lands in a single hog, wounding a leg, shattering its jaw and severing the spine in two places (20020 damage). "Get some! Get some!" yells John "The Baconator" Razorback.

Phase 10
Closest Hog: 27 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 38
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: 2%, 10%, 40%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 20%, 44%, 78%

The hogs, showing inhuman callousness towards the gruesome and pointless deaths of their hogs-in-arms, continue their push. John fires off two more bursts, 82 and 77. A hit to the first rank shatters a jaw (1000 damage) and sends the hog to the fleshmarket. Four hits slam into the hog behind it, leaving a gash that runs from the foreleg all the way to the hindleg, and a trail of guts as the hog plants face-first into the ground. (5231 damage)

Phase 11
Closest Hog: 18 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 36
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: 2%, 13%, 47%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 22%, 48%, 83%

John is wearing the hog ranks thin, with only two left in the first rank. He gives them both his best - 58 and 62 - and hits hogs in the second (1) and third ranks (3) with his first burst and hogs in the first (3), second (1), and third ranks (1) with the second. When he pauses to survey the carnage, John Razorback can see one hog with a shattered pelvis (4000 damage), one with multiple hits to the liver and foreleg (20100 damage), one with a cut to the torso and a pelvis broken in two places (6031 damage), one with a ruptured liver (10000 damage), and one, still charging, with a nasty wound to the neck.

Phase 12
Closest Hog: 10 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 32
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: 3%, 19%, 61%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 28%, 58%, 91%

Just as the feral hogs are about to overrun him, John Razorback lets loose with four bursts so close together it sounds like he's holding the trigger down and not letting go. "Die you porcine sons of bitches! Die! Die! Die!"

29, a feral hog takes it to the torso and pelvis (3031 damage) and staggers for a moment before collapsing in a pool of its own blood. 21, a hog in the second rank gets a second kink in its tail (31 damage) but continues its charge. 50, and a boar takes two shots to the chest, puncturing a lung (4031 damage) while the sow behind it crawls forwards on a hindleg that's more bone than flesh now. 11, two shots to the chest and one to the upper hindleg leaves (4231 damage) one hog to drown in its own blood as it crawls forward on its three good legs, while a boar in the second rank continues onward, the gaping hole in its throat (300 damage) turning its grunts into hoarse echoes of terror.

Phase 12
Closest Hog: 1 hex
Hogs Remaining: 29
Current Hit Probability, Single Shot, Aim Time 1-3: 61%, 100%, 100%
Current Hit Probability, Automatic Elevation, Aim Time 1-3: 93%, 100%, 100%

The hogs are flanking! John "The Baconator" Razorback pours one last burst into the closest hog (1 action) - 52 - landing hits to its liver, pelvis, and brain (112000 damage) and sending two stray bullets into the throat and hide of the hog behind it (331 damage), which slumps forward, unable to breathe. Then he pulls his machine gun up as a shield (1 action) as another hog slams into him. The blow is staggering, but John Razorback keeps his wits about him, ready as the hogs of the second rank slam into him, He uses pushes two aside and dodge a third, but the fourth traitorous hog sends him to the ground with an oddly familiar sensation (6 damage). As he lies with the wind knocked out of him, a sixth flesh-eating hog trotters up to him and chomps down on his leg for 31.2 damage, the pain sending his head spinning.

Phase 13
Closest Hog: EXTREME HOG PROXIMITY
Hogs Remaining: 27

Disoriented and on his back, all John can do is attempt to dodge the abominable flesh-eaters, giving them only a 40% chance to successfully bit. Unfortunately, Fortuna is not on John "The Baconator" Razorback's side (36, 24, 81, 37, 3, 16) and he lets loose stoic screams as five feral flesh-eating hogs take healthy bites out of him: abdomen, hip, left shin, right thigh, and hip again (122.2 damage).

Phase 14
Closest Hog: EXTREME HOG PROXIMITY
Hogs Remaining: 27

Dazed, John attempts to roll away from the hogs. He is almost successful, but one of the feral hogs rolls well and bites down on his lower chest for 7.2 damage. The pain and dizziness has him disoriented...

Phase 15
Closest Hog: EXTREME HOG PROXIMITY
Hogs Remaining: 27

...but he continues to roll. Unfortunately four of the six hogs surrounding him make their attack rolls, and John receives new bites to his left shin, right thigh, hip, and abdomen, for 98.8 additional damage. A sense of deja vu comes over John Razorback as he slips from consciousness.

Bonus Round - 30-50 feral hogs vs. Mk.19 Grenade Machine Gun

:getin:

Setup
John Razorback will lie prone (+6) behind a tripod-mounted (+5) and braced (+1) Mk.19 GMG firing at hex-sized targets (+12). This situation will ignore the penalty for moving targets, but the probability of hitting each individual feral hog is quite low. Fortunately, explosions don't need to hit directly. With Razorback's own SAL of 7, this makes for a total SAL of 31 before range and aim time penalties are taken into account, vastly superior to all previous attempts.

Phase 1
Closest Hog: 108 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 35

John "The Baconator" Razorback feels at unease as the sound of scraping trotters run through his bones and he smells the familiar waft of boar coming from a nearby bush. Suddenly, the dash from the treeline: feral hogs! 30 to 50 of them! John drops prone behind his Mk.19 (2 actions), grabs the handles and shuffles into position (2 actions), places his head in line with the sights (1 action) and flicks the safety from 'safe' to 'dangerous', coincidentally his middle name (1 action).

Phase 2

No longer trying to keep the sights on individual, evasive critters, John can take his time and aim. (6 actions)

Phase 3
Closest Hog: 90 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 35

And aim (4 actions)... Lesser men would have jitter-fired at the hog wave attack, but not John Razorback. He has nerves of steel. At 11 actions of aim, he lets it rip. Bloop, bloop, bloop. A 100% hit chance lands three 40x51 long HE shells along the hog lines. Not a hog escapes unscratched. As the smoke clears, 13 hogs are dead, dying, or running for their lives.

Phase 4
Closest Hog: 81 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 22

The remaining hogs charge charge forward without concern for their lives, no doubt more afraid of their political officers than of enemy machine guns. They're disciplined feral hogs, but John Razorback has faced disciplined feral hogs before. All you have to do is not panic and aim carefully (6 actions).

Phase 5
Closest Hog: 72 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 22

Aiming for the biggest concentrations of remaining hogs, John aims (4 actions) and fires off a second-long burst. A sound like someone blowing their nose fills the air six times in succession, drawing lines across the feral hogs and their reinforcements. Dust and smoke rises, and John "The Baconator" Razorback has sent another nine feral hogs skywards, though their pitch black souls are sure to end up in the lowest pits of hell.

Phase 6

Hogs Remaining: 13

Less than half the hog wave remains but they press the attack. John aims calmly (6 actions)

Phase 7
Closest Hog: 54 hexes
Hogs Remaining: 13

John can smell them now, remains of the dead porcines stuck to the bristly fur of their still-living hogs-in-arms carrying the rank odor of burnt hog forward. John aims and fires off another burst (2 actions) to annihilate the porcine threat. Bloop, bloop, bloop. The snap-bang of explosions as the impact-fuses detonate. The grunting and squeals that hang in the air afterwards. John "The Baconator" Razorback lives for this. Another five feral hogs are dead. He aims (4 actions)

And fires one long burst (3 actions), bloop bloop bloop bloop bloop, bang bang bang bang BANG BANG! Shaken by successive blasts, the hogs are dizzy, stumbling over their own trotters, crashing into each other, and falling over. When the smoke clears only a single hog remains standing, kicking its pettitoe against the undergrowth... John "The Baconator" Razorback takes aim (3 actions)...

MISSION SUCCESS! ALL 30-50 HOGS ELIMINATED!

Nothing going on in my quiet corner of the Pacific.

This is the life. I'm just lying here in my hammock in Townsville, sipping a G&T.
Hurrah! We have discovered scientifically that the only way a True American can protect his family is by the legal licensing of automatic grenade launchers for sale.

...was that what we set out to prove?

You can still improve on this - what if we use an even bigger gun?

It's a shame Phoenix Command can't tell us what sort of weaponry you'd need to survive 30-50 feral warthogs within 3-5 minutes. I'm sure there's a larger-scale WW3 game that can, or just a massive SAM Simulator session.

Does the system have numbers for a Davy Crockett?

No. I did extrapolate damage numbers for the warhead from existing explosives at one point, but I never bothered with the launch platform.

I still say that in order to represent the reality of America's porcine population, we should arm the hogs.

Maybe if we also ate pork there'd be less feral hogs coming for our kids.

Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations would do it for you. It's going to come down to missile magazine capacity as much as anything, to be sure of taking down 30-50 Thunderbolt IIs you're going to want somewhere north of 100 SAMs or else SAMs so accurate that the system can assume it'll get one-shot kills and doesn't need to double-up shots to ensure that the A-10s don't saturate the site. Single-site I would think you'd want either a very newest generation S-300 or a post-80s dedicated air defence DDG/CG.

Wait, maybe we could stop this problem by giving them 20-40 trained hogs.

Excellent, you found a positive result. Time to dial in the exact balance point?

Maybe a M79, but you get HE, anti-personnel, flechette, and buckshot ammo?

This is the best use of Phoenix Command I've ever seen. Voting 5.

I kind of want to see cops w/ handguns to illustrate how underarmed our poor boys in blue are against the hog menace.

You know, pig vs. hog?

Okay!

So, I've, like, designed a really sweet attack plan that I'm calling Attack Plan Ded Moroz, like "Deadmau5!"

Precincts that size are usually in urban areas, though.
