This is me on my bike pretty cool huh?
It's also my first anime about 24 or 25 years ago. I think it made the rounds because the concept of transforming was insanely weird and as a middle schooler the description had my morbid fascination.

As an adult one of my buddies told me that the show didn't recover but on the other hand that doesn't take away from how good it is at the start

My local library generally has at least a few volumes of the manga in stock so I've been checking them out on ocassion and I've gotta say that it still holds up alright.

First anime for sure. Started with the snes game, then saw the Manga at a book store. Then started collecting the VHS tapes as I could. Very fun show and I think my favorite anything is the OVA where they fight an orochi.

Not LGBTQ myself but wow I can see people watching that and it being basically a lightning-bolt through the brain.

I'd say a lot of it holds up though Takahashi's oldness shines through in some places. Also yeah, there's a reason it keeps coming up in the Trans threads and it's not just because I'm obsessed with it :v:.

Rody One Half

Ranma is, in the main, slapstick and absurdist stuff and it mostly holds up. The dated stuff is mostly the occasional early 90s gay panic and some stuff with Happosai, although with him being such an over the top villainous character I honestly think that's way less of a problem than Master Roshi rolling around in Dragon Ball.

E: oh and there is the matter of Taro...

gently caress Taro.

E: Ranma's parents are pretty terrible too.

I think they mostly get by on the absurdism.

And to be strictly fair the only thing that makes taro particularly bad versus all the other murderous rivals could easily be a bad localization

A parent telling their child they should kill themselves if the aren't manly enough isn't all that absurd unfortunately. :smith: (Not me, just in general)

Well that's why trans Ranma fics make Nodoka an antagonist a lot!

As for Genma though I think his lovely criminal bit basically works. Hell, she brought it back for Rinne's dad, who's even worse.

I got in on that Hulu deal from a couple months ago where it was $2 a month and saw this was on there and finally got curious enough to just watch it, pretty much initially so I could put personalities to the characters from the bad SNES game I remember seeing back in the day but have kept up with it just because it's still pretty interesting.

It's not as funny imo as Urusei Yatsura, but that's a pretty high bar.

The tears of time
I watched this for the first time last year. I thought it mostly held up pretty well. There was a while around episodes 25-40 or so where I thought the animation went downhill and it started feeling more formulaic, but I'm glad I stuck with it because some of my favorite episodes came after 50.

I watched the credits every episode for this ending. So catchy!

I still found it pretty funny, too. Mostly because of the reaction shots, which were always great. I couldn't loving stand Happosai, though. Man. Favorite characters were Girl Ranma, Nabiki, and Ryoga. Least favorite were Happosai and Shampoo. Boy Ranma was very boring (and I never really liked him and Akane) but his hatred for Happosai made me like him.

Shampoo was a mixed bag of a character but I did always like how she would arrive on scene by simply walking directly through whatever was in her way, leaving a path of carnage, and then just nonchalantly waving and saying hello with a straight face

I also first had okonomiyaki because of my favorite character, Ukyo. I didn't like it then and was weirded out by the bonito that almost looked alive, but I finally found a real okonomiyaki place and it turns out I love it.

I will admit to having a bad geocities page that hosted ranma roms, manga scans, and full episodes that I uploaded in no particular order or upon request.

There were a few feel good emails i recieved from people thanking me as they had no way of watching it in their country, but things started getting weird after some people started trying to invite me to ranma themed RP sessions. Luckily Yahoo eventually caught on and shut my account down so I didnt have to deal with that anymore.

To be blunt, I think a lot of it is that Master Roshi in Dragon Ball kind of made "comedic sex pest character" a part of the generic shonen template, which both Ranma and Inuyasha are riffing on.

e: past that, Japan has a horrible, horrible problem with rape culture, but I feel like the specifics of that are sorta outside my lane.

You see the most shocking sights sometimes
At least Happosai has moments where he’s sort of entertaining purely because he’s proud of being a petty rear end in a top hat, while Roshi was just lame and also portrayed as a protagonist from the start.

you could also get away with that kind of humour waaaaaaay more back in the 80s. it's dated as poo poo now, but it's everywhere in entertainment from then, from manga to anime to american tv and movies. Revenge of the Nerds comes to mind quickly.

Long time reader of the manga here. We didn't get the anime in the UK until the movies came out on DVD in 2007, so I filled the gap using fanfic and the Viz single issue releases of the manga.

Although, funnily enough, I was introduced to Ranma through the second SNES game. It got inexplicably released in the UK by Ocean Software, even though the anime wasn't released here...

Ranma was one of the first animes i stumbled upon as a young weeb in the mid 2000's, I loved it but eventually grew fatigued by the episodes feeling a bit samey and low budget in the later seasons. I have to give the show credit for giving me at least a partial understanding of trans people at a time when nobody seemed to even acknowledge their existence.

This is a little backwards since Rumiko Takahashi created Urusei Yatsura, which predates Dragon Ball by about 5 years. The protagonist of UY, Ataru Moroboshi, is basically the ur-sex pest of shounen manga as we know it. He's an archetype that Takahashi keeps bringing back in her series either because she thinks it's genuinely funny or it's just a reliable trope she can use when she's out of other ideas.

Ryoga owns because he learned that one thing that let him explode rocks that I'm pretty sure used almost the same anime logic as Sanosuke's special attack in Kenshin (that also exploded rocks and people). I remember thinking the fight scene between Ryoga and Ranma after he learned that was cool and had hype music.

Speaking of Kenshin, I recently came across my Kenshin DVD box sets of the entire series that I got at some point in high school (so sometime between 2000 and 2004).
