It's spring and it doesn't matter but this Rivas kid the Cubs back from the A's for Kemp can loving hit. Solid eye for walks it seems like too. He's almost certainly bound for AA/AAA this season and he's gonna be an awkward fit at the MLB level given he's a 1B/RF/LF who's more an OBP guy than a slugger, but still so far he does not look like a bad lottery ticket pickup at all.

Poor Mekkes. He sailed through every level of the minors before hitting a brick wall in AAA, and it's very well possible that his gimmick of having a funky delivery that hides his FB well just doesn't play against more polished hitters. He doesn't really have any plus offspeed stuff to his name so his fastball has to work or he's not gonna make it.

The Cubs cannot quit him and it's really annoying because I'm loving sick of him being trotted out and the exact same thing happening over and over. Who cares if it's inevitable the second he leaves the Cubs he'll get scooped up by the Dodgers or Yankees who'll make one small tweak to his delivery and turn him into the next closer of a generation: he's not succeeding with the Cubs and never will, stop wasting time on him and focus on pitchers who might actually help us.

He sat more 92-94 as a full time starter in 2017, which is what I expect him to sit at this year as well once the regular season actually starts. I'm holding off judgement on him being redeemed or not depending on if he can keep it up without the ability to blow straight smoke by guys.
