https://lectricebikes.com/
https://dirwinbike.com/
https://ride1up.com/

We were about to plunk down $$$ for a Tern HSD or something similar (wanted something that could take a kids seat, was a step through, didn't weigh a ton, and that was made well).

Does anyone have any opinion about the above vendors? The incentive is really quite generous.
I don't love the choices you have, but I would recommend 1 or 2 things:
-Pick one with hydraulic disk brakes instead of mechanical. It isn't so much about braking power, but hydraulic brakes are self adjusting as the pad wears.
-Ask yourself if you want it to feel like riding a bicycle. If so, find something with some torque sensing instead of just cadence based pedal assist.

Some simple bar stock could extend the arm reasonably easily--I had to do something like that to clear the running boards on my cargo bike to attach a Thule. Held up towing two kids until they got too big to fit in there.

It'll be okay. You'll just feel the assist instead of the bike convincing you that you are stronger than you are.
I think you would be most likely to notice the difference when doing tight low speed maneuvering. At higher speed you'll also notice you'll get max assist from just soft pedaling.

Cadence PAS is fine for a commuter. I was worried I was missing out but then I did a eMTB ride, where you would 100% want torque sensing, and realized it’s totally fine.
I have four points on my commute where I deal with come combination of tight spaces, traffic and limited traction and I just dip down to PAS level 2 from 4/5 and then exit and power back up. It’s literally as easy as changing gears.

Believe.
I honestly think cadence sensor might be better for people who are doing commuter style stuff. It feels less bike-y but you have more control over how much effort you want to put in at a given moment.

Man_of_Teflon

yeah, as a commuter the PAS has never bothered me. torque sensors seem to compel me to put in more work, which is of course all fun and good, but not always great for commuting.

Torque sensors are great if you spend enough money to get a fancy app along with it, with Specialized you can set it so you can get all the power of the motor with very little work, so I could cruise around at 20mph barely pedaling. Only worth it if the 1-2k price premium for bikes with torque sensors and fancy tuning apps isnt a big deal for you and you wouldn't miss that cash, I only got mine because they had such a great deal on their bikes. I had another bike that was a torque sensor but no real tuning available, I could see that being really annoying on a commute when I just want to get to work without sweating

Having tried the two, I'd recommend anyone interested just spend a little more time saving for the slightly higher price of a torque sensor bike. Cadence works, but torque sensors make the ride infinitely more satisfying.

I wasn't aware that torque sensor bikes without varying levels of assist are common in the market, but yeah, stay away from that, I guess. On mine, you just dial it up if you want to take effort away

Van Moof had the awful feature of being unable to change assist level during the ride, I think? Not sure if they ever addressed that.

Why stick with three predefined modes when you can set what those modes mean like a huge nerd.

Couldn't find a good image of it, this gif shows the presets moving the settings around, but you can move those dots around wherever you want, setting how much power that setting gives, and how much power you have to give to get that set power.

Doesn't show it there, but theres also a Shuttle option which basically makes it gives all the power of that setting without having to pedal hard at all. I like it because the normal eco setting was too powerful and I didn't feel like I was exerting any energy, so I dropped it down to get a workout, it also let me do 17 miles with 80% battery still left which is rad.

put some clothes on you little freak
I'm so used to cadence sensors that sometimes I notice I'll be unconsciously doing a weird erratic slow pedal to keep the motor engaged, if I've got the assist up too high for the speed I want, kind of like blipping a throttle.

Ultimately you can just dial the assist exactly like changing a gear and it's ok - cadence sensors are only weird and awkward when the balance of your effort vs the motor effort is wrong - too much assist for your speed can be scary for sure, but just lower the assist.

I can see the appeal of mid drive eliminating the awkwardness, but I'm not convinced it's worth the price tag. It also could be one of those things where once you're used to it you can't go back to the jerky cadence system - like how once people get a mechanical keyboard they hate using the cheap ones.

Rear and front drive also have the advantage that if you also have a throttle, you can have a catastrophic drivetrain failure (like losing your chain, for example) and still ride home.

I can confirm that I'll never buy another ebike that doesnt have a torque sensor, as I type this on a mechanical keyboard. I wouldn't have any problem riding around on those ebike rental bikes though.

Definitely not worth the price tag if it would make you sad to spend that much, I only got mine because specialized had a 0% 12 month deal which my monkey brain thinks is better than just buying it.

It wouldn't be class 1 anymore. Try these key words in your search "class 2 torque sensing". A quick search shows Aventon Level 2. But I'm sure there are several others.

Why are you changing wheels? My theory is my hub motors are heavy so no point and saving grams on the tries, just run something bulletproof.
