I wouldn’t say don’t buy them but be aware.

Don't by the consumer poo poo unless you want disposable. Buy the business-class stuff - T-series for Lenovo, for example. They tend to be more robust (and a little bit more expensive, but justifiably so, I think.)

We've got a couple of those in the boneyard at work. I threw an OEM Win10 on them, and they chug right along with no issues. Not the sleekest/slimmest, but they are small, and hardy.
T440p would be a larger (14") equivalent. Those still had the external 18650-based battery as well.

Yeah the T-series is a lot easier to FHD upgrade too. IIRC the cpu is also socketed compared to the x-series. I *almost* went for the T430 instead of the X230. This thing required some serious reengineering to make FHD resolution possible. These also use a 18650 based battery for the primary. They're definitely thicc and not light by any stretch of the modern definition. They do however, take amazing amounts of punishment. Buy a macbook if ya want sleek and thin. Buy a thinkpad if you want something bustproof you can trust.

There's a lot behind that recommendation. the X220T I have has outlived two Alienwares(M11x, 13r3), one Asus ROG(G751JY-DH72X), an Ideapad(100s), and a pitop(It was a dumb fast deployable for small projects). It and now the x230 probably outlive four or six more machines at this rate.

The T-Series is my go-to recommendation for a laptop for friends/car friends looking to tune. They are cheap on eBay, plenty of parts available, and overall reliable. Kinda like a F150. They have made so many, all the bugs are know. I'm rocking a T430 and T450 in the shop. And a W530 in the house.

Thanks for this post, it's good to see the rear end in a top hat's cat got rescued. Does Lowtax have a cat we can rescue? Regarding possessiveness, my cat is part siamese and she used to be a total butt hole. It took years to convince my cat that I wasn't a bad human although according to my future ex-wife, I guess that is still up for debate. I still warn all my guests that my cat will bite if you try to pet her, but in her old age she has finally settled down. After 6 years she finally trusts my son enough to let him pet her from time to time.

So, on that note, I just discovered that the *new* T-series has an interesting "feature". The T14s has soldered, non-upgradeable RAM. Like the Mac, you get what you bought, forever. The T14 (no "S") has one DIMM soldered, and one socket.

I found this out after getting a request from a user to buy some additional RAM for their new Dell Latitude 7410, and discovering that it is non-upgradeable - nice - and deciding to check out other standard options.

In car news, we're shopping around for car insurance, and I've just learned that I can cross Farmers off of our list. They say my Crown Vic was sold some time in the past with "frame damage", and the '87 Corolla once had a salvage title, and refuse to insure either of them. We're only wanting liability on those two cars.
"Bum bu bu bubum ba bum - we are Farmers, gently caress you."

For the record, the CV has no frame damage, and has never been in an accident as far as I can tell. The Corolla, I believe - anyone following my thread has seen what the front frame horns look like - but who cares for liability coverage? Never mind that poo poo can be fixed, regardless of what they think or say. Assholes.
VINcheck.info finds no records of theft, accident, or salvage on the CV, but They also find zilch on the AE86. I don't have CarFax at the moment.
NICB.org says neither car is stolen or salvage.

edit:
Carfax is clean on the Crown Vic, other than the open recall for the Lighting Control Module. It was sold at auction in 2009, presumably after being retired from police duty, but there are no accidents, salvage, or even airbag deployments. I hate insurance companies.

Corolla shows a Salvage title in 1996, in Missouri, salvage auction a month later, and a TX rebuilt title issued another 6 months later. It's been on the road ever since.

LOL, my Subaru came from Spokane, WA. How cliche is that? It was also regularly serviced at a BMW dealership for 7 years. First owner had it for 103,648 miles. It was sold in 2010, then moved to NM, then AZ, both in 2011, put less than 30k miles on it, then apparently traded in in 2012. Looks like goon morethanjake22 bought it in 2012, put on ~50k miles, and then I bought it in 2019 from him. So far I've added about 12k miles.

Liability only? Comprehensive and UM/UIM doesn't add much, and as easily stolen as both cars are and with how many hit/runs and uninsured people there are in TX...

My Brokeback started life in NM, but quickly went to WA, then ping ponged between WA and BC. Then... registered in South Dakota, but was in TX???? Guessing someone in the military bought it, was stationed in TX, but kept it registered at home. Then got sold again, then traded in to Subaru of Austin, who promptly punted it to auction. Subaru of Austin claims they've never done any service on it, even though Carfax claims it got a new alternator there (and the alternator has a Subaru reman sticker on it) along with "electrical checkup/repair".

I do have the dock but I only run one monitor for the most part. Its some big 4k bit from LG that really helps when I am looking at hundreds of lines of code.

I am in between offices right now and I don’t have the space for multiples. When I do run more than one all I wind up doing is putting zoom/teams on the other so I can continue to work while listening.

So my online report of the stolen license plate was rejected. The email reply was "call 311 to report it, we can't do this online".

I call 311. "Your call cannot be completed as dialed, MESSAGE 2". :fuckoff: Tried calling APD non-emergency.. they tell me to call 311 as well. Told them I can't, as I'm outside the city limits, but the theft happened inside of the city limits. They told me "drive into Austin and try it again". REALLY?

Finally did that when I ran to the store. They just took my name and number and had an APD cop call me back... to take a report over the phone. Why the gently caress couldn't they just take the report over the non-emergency # to begin with, when I told them I didn't live within the city limits and couldn't call 311... :argh: It happened inside of Austin city limits, and I tried to tell them that.

Yeah, every interaction I've had with Austin 311 has been pleasant. There's been a couple of times where they had no idea what to do with my call, but they were still polite and friendly.

... still blame AT&T for 311 not going through, since it was an AT&T recorded message, and was sitting half a mile out of the city limits. I had to drive over a mile into the city for 311 to work (so a good bit past where I work).
