Calgary is not a pretty team to watch, but my god are they extremely effective. Not a huge fan of their defensive core so if they can solidify that they're going to be an extremely difficult team to deal with throughout the season and playoffs. Jarry absolutely stole a point for Pittsburgh tonight and has been excellent for a month now which is fantastic to see. He seems to be riding a pretty good confidence wave and seems to have found a very good groove. Boyle was replaced in the lineup with Lafferty and immediately the 4th line looked significantly less bad. Like everyone else in Pens jerseys though they were predominately in their own zone. Sid looks old :( on the road against good teams the Pens defense looks extremely vulnerable and for a set of players that are supposed to provide some offense (Matheson/Marino cough) it's dried up 5v5.

System wise I think the Pens will continue to create the majority of chances against most teams, but whether they can cash in on them is going to decide a lot of their season. As it is they're going to be fighting for a bubble spot which is probably where they should be. If Malkin comes back and solves some of the top 6 scoring that will go a long way of papering over the cracks. I noticed something spreadsheet wise with Pettersson so I'm going to work on that now.

Yeah let's all try to remember this past month when Jarry turns back into a pumpkin somewhere down the line.

I keep telling myself Sid just had a bout with covid and it can take a long time to get your energy back there but... I'm worried about the wrist. What made Crosby special was the fact that when he decided he wanted a puck, the puck was his. You could NOT take it away from him. But he's lost more puck battles in the last couple weeks than he had in ten years. I worry that the surgery didn't work and his wrist is shot. :sigh:

Probably not but he'd definitely already be in 2nd.

He's 145 behind Gretzky right now, but only 52 behind Howe.

I did the math earlier this year, he’s probably be 1.5-2 seasons from it.

At the start of this season he needed 34 goals for five seasons to catch Gretzky.

Calgary’s D is really good in my opinion. They aren’t the huge offensive generators that people thought they could be (Rasmus and Hanfin) but they’re solid enough on defence. Kylington and Tanev are good. Heck, even Gudbranson has been okay. The weak leak on defence that makes it look bad is Zadorov. He’s slow, constantly messes up, and always seems like he’s out of place and doesn’t know where to go. Whenever a really bad goal gets given up, I always see him on the ice. If they just swap with Valimaki I think they’d be incredibly effective but “no let’s play the big lug because he knows how to hit”

Ugh.

I mean, when you're waiving a guy who you just signed to a $25m contract, a courtesy call seems appropriate. Especially when he's outplaying one of the other goalies on the main roster.

There's been similar comments from a number of other players who have been dealt or unsigned - Borowiecki, Duclair, DeMelo, and the below re: McKenna:

https://twitter.com/6thSens/status/1465728586342866944

Just seems weird for a GM who values and constantly talks about "character" in drafting/trading, to avoid having difficult conversations with players who are leaving. Dorion also started blatantly avoiding the media as soon as this season started to go downhill, after promising that "the rebuild is over" before the season started. He's making DJ Smith, Tkachuk, and Chabot answer all of the questions about the team's awful performance, when the real problem is roster construction.

I could have told you that after 9 years in Minnesota. Hell, one of the first things he did was hire Todd Richards as head coach.

If you need someone to run your hockey club at a mediocre level instead of terribly, then Chuck is your guy. He’s be perfect in Ottawa or Buffalo, but if you want him to make a bunch of great signings instead of one or two headlines and then put together a solid team that can get past the 2nd round, then Chuck is not your guy.

If you give Ovie credit for those, you’d have to also move the bar up for Gretzky missing 2 half seasons for strike/lockout. Those were later in his career so that’s probably just another 25ish. I also thought you’d have to add in some credit for the 46 he scored in the WHA too but realized that was his age 17 season so he wouldn’t have been draft eligible yet anyways.

I've become friends with an elderly guy who was a very good minor league player in the 50s and 60s and man does he have stories about how brutal hockey used to be. The main thing I've learned about from him though is how much advances in equipment have to do with the evolution of strategy and tactics over the years and decades. Giving a poo poo about concussions has only been a thing with the public for about 10 years and still isn't really a thing with players or coaches.

e: though he did retire in his early 30s when he was still a good player because he'd gotten married and had a couple kids and wanted to both stop traveling two-thirds of the year and be able to play with his kids without being in severe pain all the time.

Maybe not at upper levels, but it’s been a real focus of youth hockey near me. They’re working on correcting stupid behavior now so that the kids can keep playing. You know until they’d go to juniors and the coaches and refs stop caring about the health and safety of their players. The US hockey dev program does focus on brain safety in a way that is good, but it really does need to move up the ranks faster.

Why does Jake debrusk want out of Boston

For a while it looked like he had the 2nd line LW spot locked in. 20+ goal threat, first PP unit, etc. Then something changed, I don't think anyone knows what, and his game just gradually deteriorated and completely disappeared. When Hall was brought in he still got to play some time on the off wing but he was even worse at that. He was on the 2nd PP and then not at all. Most recently he's been in the bottom six or scratched entirely because he doesn't really try very hard at any type of play without the puck. He's gotten into Cassidy's dog house and it doesn't seem like he's ever going to get out. As far as I can tell it's a bit of a management/coaching issue as well as a player attitude issue. Debrusk seems like the kind of player who thinks he can just coast on the success he's had and he doesn't seem to try very hard in terms of practice, conditioning, etc. Charlie McAvoy publicly called him out a while back and said that Debrusk has "the worst eating habits in the league". He pretty much just eats fast food.

I think he'll probably be fine somewhere else and maybe even succeed, but he's not heeding the wakeup calls he's been getting from the Bruins so it's gonna have to be from someone else. He was a great player when he had all his poo poo together. It's a definite sell-low situation for Boston too so there's a good chance the trade will look awful if Debrusk turns it around.
